What is the Drake Curse, who has fallen victim to it and is Anthony Joshua the latest?

ANTHONY JOSHUA was humiliated by Andy Ruiz Jr back in 2020 as the Brit suffered the first defeat of his professional boxing career. While the Mexican fighter will no doubt take all the glory and thank Snickers for their contribution – could there have been other worldly forces at work in the bout at Madison Square Garden.
Drake has been posing for photos with various sports stars including Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero – but that hasn’t been a good thing for the athletes
    What is the Drake Curse?
The Drake Curse is not some plague concocted by a witch, nor a disease – it is a photo with Canadian rapper who lends his name to it.
In the past, Drake has been snapped with sports stars ahead of matches or major sporting events, before the picture goes viral on social media.
Yet, the athlete posing alongside the 36-year-old often loses shortly afterwards, with the musical artist becoming a serious bad luck charm.

Who has fallen victim to the Drake Curse?
The Drake Curse started out in basketball, with the artist becoming a part of the Kentucky college basketball program.
Except they haven’t won a title since, and three years later, they lost a decider against Wisconsin in which Drake bet over £4500 on it.
In 2013, his hometown basketball side suffered as well, as Toronto Raptors made him their global ambassador back in 2013 – only to soon gain a reputation for choking in big matches.
Miami were next up, losing 4-1 to San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals – the Florida side were even blessed with the likes of LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.
In 2015, the Drake Curse moved away from basketball and into tennis, as Serena Williams suffered a shocking US Open semi-final defeat to Roberta Vinci.
Jadon Sancho is among a host of sports stars to be defeated by the Drake Curse
The following year, it was not so much a match, but his place in the sport, as quarterback Johnny Manziel dropped out of NFL, despite being a first-round draft pick in the past.
While it appears like a few anomalies over the years, the Drake Curse has spread like wildfire in 2019.
First it was UFC champion Conor McGregor to lose to Khabib Nurmagomedov, before Alabama’s college football team were beaten heavily by rivals Clemson.
Dipping into association football, former Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho posed with Drake prior to losing to Bayern Munich.
Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was next up by being benched in the defeat to Bayern Munich.
Drake even ruined Manchester City’s 2019 Champions League hopes as Sergio Aguero missed a penalty against Tottenham.
Paris Saint-Germain then suffered their heaviest league defeat in 19 years, by losing 5-1 to Lille.
PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa will be wishing he never posed with Drake after the French side were heavily beaten by LilleCredit: Instagram @kurzawa_20
Italian outfit Roma even joked they were putting a club ban on posing with the Canadian artist
    Is the Drake curse over?
Back in 2019, the curse was at its very peak, with many sporting stars falling victim.
However, in recent times it seems the curse is no longer in effect.
In 2021 Tyson Fury was supported by Drake online prior to his trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.
The Gypsy King went on to knock out the Bronze Bomber in Las Vegas, showing no signs of suffering with the Canadian’s curse, as Fury retains his WBC heavyweight championship belt.
Bayern Munich star Alfonso Davies is also immune to the rapper’s curse, as he was pictured with Drake just days before his side was set to take on Bayer Leverkusen back in October 2021.
The German giants went on to beat Leverkusen 5-1, furthering the belief that the curse is no more.

Misfits Boxing 005 LIVE RESULTS: Jay Swingler fight DECISION, Tag team clash ends WILDLY, Astrid Wett WINS

MISFITS Boxing returned with a HUGE card live from Telford!Hometown star Jay Swingler won by decision in a thriller against NichLMAO in the main event of a bill which also featured the first ever TAG TEAM boxing match.
Astrid Wett and AJ Bunker fought a bloody war on the undercard in front of the lively crowd.

Telford’s sold-out Telford International Centre played host

    Next up
For Misfits it’s a trip to New Orleans on April 21.
And we have a main event just announced for that card.
It’s a boxing return for former NFL running-back Le’Veon Bell.

    Chant of the night
Even Jay Swingler broke out into this.
“I would rather have a dark fruits than a wife.”
For those that don’t know. A dark fruits is a flavoured cider drink that is popular in parts of England… clearly here.
    Nichlmao says
“Thank you Telford. Win or lose it wasn’t about that.
“You made our dreams come true. Thanks to Telford, to Jay, to Misfits, KSI and everyone so much.”
    Swingler says
    “He’s a tough cookie. He’s been training.
“Everybody was saying I was going to walk all over this guy but they were wrong and Nick proved everyone wrong.
    “This man is a warrior.”
    .Credit: Getty
    The scorecards
Swingler got it 39-36, 39-37 on two of the cards while the third was a 38-38 draw.
That was close, but the home crowd and his better conditioning seemed to get Swingler through.
Credit to Nichlmao. That decision could’ve gone either way.
    Swingler wins!
    Telford International Centre goes mad.
    It’s a majority decision.
    Nervous wait
Swingler is up on the ropes to celebrate.
Nichlmao gets a few more cheers for his efforts there than he got entering the ring.
    Telford holds it’s breath.
    Final bell
What a round. What a battle. What a fight.
I give Jay that final round – but will it be enough?
    We go to the scorecards.
    Here we go
The fighters touch gloves for the fourth and final round.
    This is anyone’s fight still.
    Third round
This must be driving Swingler crazy.
His opponent looks like he’s stumbling around the ropes but every time Swingler goes in for a shot he’s met with three or four good ones and forced to cover up.
This is so tough to score – but I think Swingler needs the final round more than Nichlmao.
    Brutal fight so far.
    Round two
Swingler is landing and it’s getting huge roars – but Nichlmao is coming straight back forcing the home fighter to cover up.
If anything it looks like Nichlmao is struggling with the pace a bit more than his opponent.
Jay might tough this one out. He’s going to need all his stamina and home support in the final two rounds.
    What a round
Swingler starts it like a house on fire and chants of ‘Telford, Telford’ go up around the arena.
But Nichlmao comes firing back and embraces the challenge. He has Jay rocked momentarilty.
An excellent opening round I probably give to Nichlmao.
    Final instructions
The fighters meet in the middle of the ring one final time for the final instructions.
The Telford International Centre is rocking. I didn’t even know this place existed, but it’s absolutely buzzing in here.
    The hometown hero
I think we just got a louder cheer from the crowd than for the tag team match.
Swingler comes out to ‘Highway to Hell’ in front of his home crowd.
He skips into the ring and laps up the cheers.
    Telford is pumped for this.
    Here we go…
    It’s main event time.
    First up here comes Nichlmao.
    Next up
A huge roar from the Telford crowd as it’s announced that local boy Jay Swingler will be coming up next in the main event.
He’s from this part of the world, so can bank on home support against Nichlmao.
    Plenty to say
Deen the Great says “Walid only s**t because of his sister.”
He also adds that Adam Saleh has ducked a bout three times.
I think Deen has plenty of options on who to fight next, to say the least.
    .Credit: Getty
    Injury news
Deen confirms he was carrying an injury.
He dislocated his shoulder five weeks ago and it came out again in sparring three weeks ago.
He added that he put the tape on both shoulders so his opponent wouldn’t know which one.
    It’s unanimous!
It’s a 40-35 decision on all three cards for Deen.
He won every round according to the judges and the knockdown was the cherry on top.
    To the scorecards
It’s over. Both men think they’ve won it but I think the knockdown will be the key factor here and Deen will get the decision.
Another close battle on this packed card.
    Tug of war
    Deen is rocked now!
Pully lands a huge blow and is giving it everything to try and steal this in the final round.
    Survival
Pully makes it to the end of the round and stumbles back to his corner.
Deen tried to finish it there and then but couldn’t land the killer blow.
We go into a fourth and final round.
    Pully is down!
A massive right hand from Deen leaves him in a heap.
Pully takes his time to get up but the fight goes on.
    Neck and neck
This is too close to call.
Really good work being done by both fighters. Deen’s corner got excited at a combination he threw that seemed to back Pully up.
Maybe that was just to get the judges’ attention.
    Tough sledding
Not much to separate them in the opening round.
And fortunately it looks like Deen isn’t nursing any kind of injury and the tape is just to help.

    Weighty issue
It seems like agreeing on a weight will be the main sticking point in getting a Wett vs Brooke fight over the line.
We’d love to see them battle it out maybe in London on May 13 on KSI’s undercard?
    Make it happen!
    Brooke side
Elle Brooke watched this fight from ringside and commentated for DAZN.
She says it was a close call. And then attention turns to a potential bout between her and Wett.

Both of them have red marks over their faces.
Astrid is hoisted aloft by her team and should get this in a comfortable decision.
    Second done
This is an instant classic – so much better than the last fight that we had on.
Neither of these women is going down without a fight.
I have Astrid up two rounds on the scorecards.
AJ needs a KO in the final round here.

    Misfits recap
So tonight is fight night No 5 for KSI’s new promotional brand.
It seems to be getting bigger and bigger and has just signed a new five-year deal with DAZN.
Tonight is one of the smaller, regular events on the calendar.
The PPV shows I’ve seen in London twice have been spectacular but this is the first time seeing a regular show up close.
If Telford is anything like the O2 Arena or Wembley Arena shows from the last seven months then it should be fun.

    Location
Telford, lovely Telford. What to say about this place.
It’s not an area of England many people would have visited for sure.
It’s around a two-hour drive north of London and 90-minutes south of Manchester.
There’s not an awful lot here other than the International Centre which is hosting tonight’s event.
I have family here so am here quite often. One cousin keeps telling me about a famous bridge they have called ‘Ironbridge’. Look it up if you want.
    Center stage
Tonight’s female bout will see Astrid Wett take on AJ Bunker.
The fight will see Only Fans star Astrid take on former Love Island reality contestant AJ.
Astrid would like to complete her boxing hattrick after her fight with Bunker, with a bout against fellow OnlyFans star Elle Brooke.
AJ made her boxing debut against Astrid’s nemesis Brooke last August.
Chelsea fan Astrid then watched ringside as Brooke made her return against American influencer Faith Ordway in January.

    Full card
The action has just got underway with the first bout of the evening between Tempo Arts and Godson done.
Here’s what what’s on the menu for the evening…

Main event: Jay Swingler v Nicholai Perrett
King Kenny v Ashley Tebi from Rak-Su
Deen The Great v Pully Arif
Luis Pineda & BDave v Stromedy & Austin Sprinz

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk ‘not far off’ being scrapped as promoter reveals decision to axe fight will be imminent

TYSON FURY’S undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk is “not far off” collapsing, according to promoter Frank Warren. The Gypsy King, 34, has been in talks with the Ukrainian’s team ever since he successfully defended his WBC crown against Derek Chisora in December.

Usyk has not fought since beating Anthony Joshua in AugustCredit: PA
A clash in Saudi Arabia appeared to be the most likely location for the bout – which would see all four world heavyweight titles on the line.
But a failure to secure a site fee in the Middle East has left them looking at Wembley on April 29.
However, Fury’s promoter Warren has now cast doubts about the fight taking place at all.
Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “We’re getting to a situation where one way or another we’re going to have to make a decision.
    READ MORE ON TYSON FURY
“And we’re not far off that.”
Fury and Usyk are both undefeated as professionals and widely regarded as the two best heavyweights in the world.
Since moving up from cruiserweight, Usyk has beaten Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua twice.
But before that, Fury ended Wladimir Klitschko’s reign with a superb win in 2015 and then left the sport for three years due to mental health issues.

He returned in 2018 and has gone on to beat Deontay Wilder on two occasions, as well as Dillian Whyte and Chisora.
If a Fury-Usyk fight does not materialise, an all-British dust-up with Joe Joyce could be next up for the WBC champion.
Last month, Warren hinted at a summer clash between his two men Fury and Joyce.
Joyce is set to face Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang at the Copper Box Arena on April 15 as he awaits a world title shot.
But he could be thrown into a Fury clash instead should the opportunity arise.
Speaking in a recent column, Warren said: “Our big hope, of course, is that the Juggernaut [Joyce] remains on a collision course with Tyson Fury and a big summer date at Wembley.
“That is the plan if Tyson takes all the titles from Oleksandr Usyk and Joe does the business on April 15 in Stratford.” More
