Floyd Mayweather reveals how he paid for funeral of childhood boxing hero Hernandez after idol gave him world-title shot

FLOYD MAYWEATHER has opened up on the reason why he paid for the funeral of his boxing idol and former foe Genaro Hernandez in 2011.
The 43-year-old picked up the first of his 15 world titles in 1998 when he beat his American compatriot for the WBC super-featherweight belt in Las Vegas.

Hernandez – a two-time world champion – suffered defeat just twice in his 41 fights, with Oscar De La Hoya stopping him in 1995 for the WBO lightweight strap.
And Mayweather has revealed how Hernandez – who died nine years ago after battling cancer – was his hero during his teenage years.
Speaking on Fat Joe’s Instagram live video, he said: “When I was 16, I had a poster on my wall, because you remember, when we were young, we used to have posters on our wall. Young kids don’t do that anymore.
“I had a poster, right above my head, Genaro ‘Chicanito’ Hernandez.

“And I used to watch him on TV fight and I said nobody will beat that guy. I was 16.
    CLASSY FLOYD
“Five years later I was across from that guy, fighting for the championship.
“And then he ended up passing away, I ended up taking care of his funeral, and still communicating with his family because he’s the first guy that gave me my chance.
“I was ranked No8 and he was a world champion and he didn’t have to give me a shot.

“But fighting me was at that particular time was his big money fight so we made it happen.”
Mayweather also sent a £70,000 cheque to pay for George Floyd’s funeral costs, following his death in police custody.

Commenting on why he felt the need to foot the funeral bills, he said: “The thing is this, you do different things different ways, so we’re giving back like that, our team.
“I’m basically saying it’s coming from all of us, because we’re all a team. So we’re giving back.
“He’s having three funerals, probably even four, but I’m taking care of all of them.”

How Mike Tyson reckons he’d fare against Fury, AJ and Wilder

His former trainer has claimed he would still KO fellow American Deontay Wilder inside a MINUTE if he trained for six weeks.
In recent years, Tyson has been more focused on his business and owns a weed farm in California having previously gone bankrupt in 2003 – when he was forced to sell his extravagant 52-room mansion to 50 Cent for £3.3million.
But he has clearly been considering hopping back in the ring for some time – having given his two cents on how he’d fare against the likes of Tyson Fury, Wilder and Anthony Joshua.

And it would’ve been a bitter pill for the 54-year-old to swallow, looking at the mega mansion.
Boasting 52 rooms, including 21 bedrooms, as well as its own nightclub the property is as lavish as Tyson has ever owned.
But it was needs must for the heavyweight boxing legend, and in came rapper 50 Cent who bought it from him for £3.3million the same year it was revealed he blew his fortune.
    PROPERTY DEETS
When the In da Club singer bought the house from Tyson, it set a record for the most expensive home ever sold in the area of Farmington – and it’s easy to see why.

Along with those 21 bedrooms we mentioned earlier, the 50,000-square-foot abode has a 25 bathrooms, an indoor pool and hot tub, an indoor court, multiple game rooms, a green-screen room, and a recording studio.
And the opulence doesn’t end there.
Entering the property through a stately front gate, you’re greeted by a lion statue.
Walking into the home on the marble floor, a duelling wood-panelled staircase leads you to another level of the property.

As can be seen, the decor is as lavish as it gets throughout the property.

    TOO EXPENSIVE
Over the years, the property has dropped in value rapidly – mostly because of its running costs that 50 cent complained cost him around £50,000-per-month.
In fact, it was on the market for 12 years – starting at £14million before it was finally sold last year for just £2.3million – an 84 per cent price drop.
“It’s just oversized for the market,” estate agent Jonathan Miller told Realtor.com.
“When you have a property that is well outside the norm, it takes a lot longer to sell.”

Mike Tyson’s £890k abandoned mansion had tiger cages and basketball court before conversion to CHURCH

THIS is the spectacular mansion Mike Tyson abandoned during his rapid fall from grace.
The former professional boxer – who was convicted of rape in 1992 – had no choice but to sell this palatial property as financial ruin loomed, and the imposing Ohio mansion has since been converted into a CHURCH.

The self-declared “baddest man on the planet” once called this massive property home, but the former heavyweight champion had no choice but to sell up in 1999, after being dogged by controversy and money woes.
And the luxurious, if dusty, mansion has since been transformed into The Living Word Sanctuary Church’s home.
Living Word Pastor Nicholas DeJacimo told the Warren Tribune-Chronicle: “The property had been untouched for 10 years.
“You had so much grass you could have sold it for hay.”

The dilapidated pool has since been turned into a sanctuary while the living room is now a gathering place.
Remnants of the 54-year-old’s time still remain with the basketball court still intact.
The old fireplace has since been turned into an indoor waterfall while the four-bay garage is now classrooms and a nursery.
And the tall steel cages where Tyson kept his famous four tigers have been dismantled for a pavilion.

Previous snaps showed the mansion’s gold-plated fittings, situated behind an imposing gate with Tyson’s name emblazoned on it.
The property was still an impressive sight, despite the run-down state and dilapidated interior it had became years after the brutal boxer sold it for £870k.
In Tyson’s day, the mansion boasted five bedrooms and a full-size pool and Jacuzzi alongside its tiger cages and basketball court, with the entire pad decked out with crystal chandeliers.

Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992, and sentenced to six years in prison, but was released after serving three years.
He is best known for biting part of Evander Holyfield’s ear off during a high profile bout in 1997, and the disgraced star was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2003 after racking up millions in debts.
The 54-year-old is now set to make his boxing comeback against Roy Jones Jr on September 12 – 15 years after he decided to hang up his gloves.

Ricky Hatton fears Mike Tyson return aged 54 could end in ‘tragedy’ ahead of comeback bout against Roy Jones Jr

RICKY HATTON has urged Mike Tyson to cancel plans for a comeback at the age of 54 and says it would be a tragedy if the heavyweight legend picked up a “serious injury”.
The heavyweight legend, 54, has confirmed he will make his comeback against Roy Jones Jr, 51, on September 12.

Manchester hero Hatton – who made an unsuccessful comeback in 2012 by losing to Vyacheslav Senchenko after three years out – wants the reformed Baddest Man on The Planet to stay retired.
Hatton, who lost a stone and a half training in lockdown, told iFL TV: “Everyone said ‘Are you fighting Mike Tyson?’ One thing I won’t be doing is fighting John Fury. John’s going for it, isn’t he?
“Mike’s in a good place now. When he retired, he wasn’t in a good place. He was on medication.
“Now he’s doing positive things, and he’s doing motivational speaking. He’s talking well and looking well. It’s one thing that you’re talking well and looking well, but you’re 53.

“We all make comebacks because we have so much to improve. That’s why I came back because I felt like I had to redeem myself.
“But Mike has mentally got himself on track, not just physically on track. He’s looking better, talking better, and feeling better.
“Now his body is right, and his head is right, why is he thinking comeback? I don’t get it. It would be a tragedy for him after he went through all those bad times, and got back on the straight and narrow to do himself some serious injury.

Floyd Mayweather names his boxing ‘Mount Rushmore’ and snubs Muhammad Ali but included HIMSELF on list

FIGHT legend Floyd Mayweather has ignored the likes of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson in his list of top five boxers but unsurprisingly included himself.
The American has every right to put his own name on the list after ending his career undefeated with 50 wins.

But he has left out a number of notorious names including arch rival Manny Pacquiao, Sugar Ray Leonard and Joe Frazier.
Revealing his ‘Mount Rushmore’ of greatest fighters to Fat Joe on Instagram, they included the likes of Larry Holmes who even endured defeat to Tyson in 1988.
    PERNELL WHITAKER
Whitaker was a four-weight world champion having won titles at lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight.
He still holds the longest unified lightweight championship reign in boxing history with six title defences.

He has regarded as one of the best defensive boxers ever – a skill Mayweather was the master of throughout his career.
He won 40 out of 46 fights although three of his four defeats came in the final four fights of his career.

    ROBERTO DURAN
Panamanian legend Duran had a whopping 119 fights throughout his career – winning 103.
Like Whitaker, he held world titles in four weight divisions in a career that spanned five decades.

He is still widely regarded as the greatest lightweight of all-time and earned the nickname “Hand of Stone” was his remarkable punching power.

    LARRY HOLMES
Feeling obliged to pick a heavyweight, Mayweather opted for the ‘Easton Assassin.’
He hed the WBC heavyweight title for five years and lineal titles from 1980 to 1985.
Overall, 19 fighters attempted to dethrone him and is one of five fighters to beat Ali.
Mayweather said: “Larry Holmes beat everybody in his era, when Larry Holmes got beat by Mike Tyson, he got beat by a young hungry champion and he came out of a year’s retirement and got beat by Tyson.
“I’ve got to say Larry Holmes, he had the basic fundamentals, he had the jab and even right now he’s still living a great life because he made smart investments.
“So he was good from the beginning of his career to the end of his career.”

    AARON PRYOR
American Pryor fought for 14-years until his retirement in 1990.
He is a light welterweight world champion and won 39 of his 40 fights.
Mayweather added: “Aaron Pryor, the only reason why Aaron Pryor lost a fight was because of drugs, he lost only one fight because of drugs.”

    King promoted heavyweight champion Tyson
But their relationship soured when the promoter was accused of fleecing the world champion for £78million ($100m) after he came out of prison in 1995 and continued fighting.
In the end King settled for £10m in 2004 out of court, but Tyson remained hostile to the “reptilian motherf***er” and even threw water over him at the WBC convention in 2018.
Despite the animosity between the pair, it appears is has all been forgotten, as King, 88, revealed to TMZ Sports, ahead of Tyson’s comeback.
He said: “I love Mike Tyson. I have never had anything negative to say about Mike Tyson.

“I just talked to him on his birthday on June 30th – him and his beautiful wife and I wished them a happy birthday.
“I’m just very very happy to be able to still see Mike around.”
Tyson, 54, will box for the first time in 15 years after signing to face Roy Jones Jr, 51, in an eight-round boxing exhibition on September 12.

Listen to the terrifying power of Mike Tyson’s punches as leaked footage shows Iron Mike prepare for Roy Jones Jr fight

ROY JONES JR received a fierce warning shot after footage from Mike Tyson’s training camp was posted online.
Iron Mike appeared in sharp form ahead of his hotly-anticipated comeback fight in September, pounding an aqua bag with a number of punches.

Perhaps most terrifying was the booming smack heard with each blow as the 54-year-old prepared for the fight.
Known as the Baddest Man on the Planet earlier in his career, Tyson’s success was partly down the sense of fear he instilled in his opponents.
And Jones Jr will become the first man to face down the former heavyweight king in 15 years when they take to the ring in California.
The New York native has shed six stone for the September 12 fight and earned a large swell of admirers, including Anthony Joshua.

Although another legend of the ring, George Foreman, warned against taking too much out of such training clips.
The American said to TMZ: “We only see what he wants us to see. We are only looking at what he wants us to see.

“Maybe a few minutes later when he gets up out the bed he gets dizzy and falls on the floor or his leg pops out.”
As the current holder of several heavyweight belts, AJ remarked that Tyson looks ready for a return to championship contention.

He told Sky Sports: “Mike Tyson hitting the pads with that ferocious behaviour is just second nature to him.
