Paulie Malignaggi ‘axed by Showtime over outspoken views on race in boxing and refusing to apologise’

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI has been axed from his role at Showtime after refusing to apologise for his controversial views regarding race in boxing.
The retired former champ, who held titles in two weight divisions, caused anger in response to a comment made by American fighter Devin Haney.

Haney, 21, said in April that “he’d never let a white boy beat me.”
Malignaggi, who was employed as an analyst for Showtime at the time, responded to iFLTV: “When you’re in your early twenties, you probably don’t express that very well.
“It’s not something that great to make racial (statements) in 2020, especially with so many racial tensions in the world.
“Boxing has had its course in history with certain demographics dominating more than others, right?

“Maybe like 100 years ago, Irish fighters were better. And then the Jews and the Italians came in.
“I think the African-American fighter became most dominant in the sport in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s.
“It’s not great to have the race discussion because it’s going to coordinate division.
“It’s no longer the time of the African American anymore in boxing.

“It’s (the Eastern Europeans) that has become the dominant species in boxing. I think stating something like (Haney’s statement) could be very dangerous.”

Malignaggi had been employed by the company since 2012 and hasn’t responded to a request for comment from Boxing Scene.

Mike Tyson, 54, would still KO Deontay Wilder, 34, in ONE MINUTE if pair fought now, says former trainer Jeff Fenech

MIKE TYSON would knock out fellow American Deontay Wilder inside a MINUTE if he trained for six weeks, according to his former trainer.
The former heavyweight champ, 54, is considered one of the greatest boxers of all-time and enjoyed an illustrious career.

Mike Tyson would still knock out Deontay Wilder today claims his ex-coach
Iron Mike was crowned the youngest world champion ever, aged 20, and earned the nickname the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’.
His career spanned 20 years, knocking out 44 of his 50 opponents – and is now primed to return to the ring with a fight against Roy Jones Jr.
Wilder, 34, held the WBC world title until he came crashing back down to earth by heavyweight rival Tyson Fury.
He has knocked out a staggering 41 opponents in 44 fights and remains the hardest puncher in the business.

But despite being 20 years older and retiring in 2005, Jeff Fenech believes Tyson would STILL beat Wilder today with some training.
He told Sporting News: “Boxing’s not the same now. I’d guarantee that if Mike Tyson trained for six weeks, he’d knock Wilder out in a minute.
“He would hit them. If these guys are getting knocked out by Tyson Fury – who’s a great fighter, but not a huge puncher – Tyson would kill these guys.
“They’re not on the same level today.

“Mike today, I reckon if he trained he could still beat these guys.
“Fury’s got these other skills, but Deontay Wilder’s got a punch and nothing else. If you punch him, it’s over.
    “And Mike don’t miss.”
And his thoughts are echoed of those by boxing coach Teddy Atlas who was Tyson’s first amateur coach while later cornering champions Michael Moorer, Shannon Briggs and Alexander Povetkin.
He reckons Tyson’s rivals Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe all would have beaten current heavyweight kings Fury and Joshua.

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr will NOT be a pat-a-cake exhibition… it is shameful that the bout has been sanctioned

MIKE TYSON’S eight-round exhibition with Roy Jones Jr has shamefully been officially sanctioned by the Californian State Athletic Commission.
And if that’s not an example of boxing scandalously shooting itself in the foot I don’t know what is.

    2

    2

Roy Jones Jr, 51, has the ominous task of trading with Tyson
Last week it was announced Tyson, 54, and Jones, 51, wearing 12oz gloves — but no headguards — are going to meet behind closed doors at the misnamed Dignity Health Park, Carson, a suburb of Los Angeles.
America is a free country and if Tyson, who hasn’t been in the ring for 15 years wishes to stage a farcical comeback so be it.
And if fans are willing to pay the outrageous sum of £39 to watch this unedifying spectacle that’s their prerogative.
What I find totally abhorrent is that the California Commission, which has the reputation of being one of the strictest in the US when it comes to the health and safety of boxers, should give it their blessing.

The British Boxing Board of Control would never entertain the idea of two men in their fifties, obviously going through a form of middle-aged madness, indulging in such blatant attention-seeking.
BBBofC secretary Robert Smith was being diplomatic when he told me: “I must say I’m very surprised at the California Commission, held in such high regard by every governing body in the world, allowing this to happen.”
If the California Commission had done the right and sensible thing and rejected Tyson and Jones, no doubt they would have found a rogue State to accommodate them.

Just as Aaron ‘The Hawk’ Pryor did 30 years ago.

Pryor, one of the 20th century’s greatest fighters, following detached retina surgery, was diagnosed as being legally blind in his left eye.
Yet he still had the gall to apply to the California Commission to renew his licence to continue his career.
Hardly surprisingly his application was thrown out.
Desperate for money to feed his cocaine habit, Pryor — who held the world light-welterweight title for five years — went to Wisconsin to try his luck there.
This is where the story belongs in the can’t-make-it-up section.
Though it beggars belief, Pryor got his licence.

They are just going to be there moving around the ring and letting the fans see legends
Andy FosterExecutive director of the California Commission

Maureen Cummings, secretary of the Wisconsin licensing authority explained: “The State considers Pryor’s problem a handicap rather than a medical condition.
“And we have strict laws against discriminating against the handicapped.”
Aaron, who eventually kicked his drug habit, knocked out a journeyman. He was 60 when he died of heart failure four years ago.
Andy Foster, executive director of the California Commission, justified his organisation’s highly controversial decision to pander to Tyson and Jones.
He said: “They won’t be trying to hurt each other. This isn’t a situation where they are going out there to try to take each other’s heads off.
“They are just going to be there moving around the ring and letting the fans see legends.”
Tyson’s ominous reaction to that statement was: “The gods of war have reawakened me and I want to go to war again. I just know one way of fighting.”

But once the bell sounds and the adrenaline starts pumping through Tyson’s veins, anything is likely to happen.
As Smith drily remarked: “Some of the best fights I’ve seen were supposed to be exhibitions.”

Anthony Joshua reveals dreams of becoming Premier League football star were dashed by his partying in youth

ANTHONY JOSHUA’S dreams of becoming a Premier League footballer were dashed by his top-flight partying skills.
As a boy growing up in Watford, AJ was a talented footballer who could have signed schoolboy forms at a few London clubs.

But the lure of the capital’s nightspots was an even bigger draw, especially once the 6ft 6in hulk was hanging with an older crowd.
The unified heavyweight king has always credited the brutal sport with dragging him on to the straight and narrow.
And he explained to Apple Music how being able to hide in a 16-man squad – and fair the off injury – was always too easy for him
The 30-year-old said: “The problem with soccer or football was where it’s a team game.

“So I was 15, a couple of my friends are older than me started smoking and going out.
“Obviously they left school now so now they got an ID. They’re going clubbing. They’re telling me, “Yo, it’s lit. Trust me. This is where you need to be.”
“And,where football’s a team game, I could go out on a Friday night. And when I’m playing Saturday, “Ah, gaffer, my hamstring.” Sub, but you’re just really tired from the last night’s party antics.

Anthony Joshua out to beat Tyson Fury to punch as Brits race for money-spinning comeback bouts after Covid-19 lockdown

ANTHONY JOSHUA aims to beat bitter rival Tyson Fury to the coronavirus comeback punch.
Lockdown wrecked AJ’s June 20 defence against Kubrat Pulev and Fury’s third showdown with Deontay Wilder in July.

    1

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury bumped into each other a week or so ago in Spain – they are set to meet again in the ring next yearCredit: Refer to Caption
Both Brit heavyweights are now waiting for the all-clear on fans being allowed back into arenas.
And the race is on to see which fighter gets in the ring first in December.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn admits they plan to upstage the Gypsy King.
Matchroom boss Hearn said: “It looks like Fury vs Wilder 3 is December 19, so we will most likely go on December 5 or 12, to give ourselves as much time as possible.

“AJ would probably want to go at the end of October or middle or November.
“But, for the sake of three or four extra weeks of training, it isn’t worth rushing.
“You need to remember you are only going to box once this year.
“AJ’s good, he gets it. He knows the numbers that he would have got for boxing in June.”

Joshua was eager to fight on one of Hearn’s four Fight Camp back-garden shows that are kicking off on Saturday night.
But Watford’s WBA, IBF and WBO king rakes in around £5million in ticket sales per show.
And even his mega-money sponsorship deals could never fill that void.
Hearn, who in June helped broker terms for a potential 2021 clash between AJ and Fury, explained: “He’s not suffering for a few quid.
“So AJ needs to progress his career in the right way and, more importantly, prepare for the Tyson Fury fight.
“Pulev, coming off a year lay-off, is really good preparation for Fury.
“Not stylistically, but just to get in with a big heavyweight, get that big momentum, hopefully score a big knockout and move forward into that fight in 2021.
“We would have taken £5m on the gate, so now there is a £5m hole in the AJ fight.
“How are we going to get round that? Pulev take less? AJ take less? Maybe condense the card a little bit?
“Maybe get 2,000 people in somewhere to pay premium-price seats?”

AJ held his rematch win over Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia and Hearn himself has a partnership with the controversial state.
But, until they get better Covid-19 results, the Essex salesman is considering all other options.
That includes the Fight Island concept UFC just used in Abu Dhabi.
Hearn said: “I am in discussions with somewhere and it is not dissimilar to Fight Island.
“But, at the moment, anywhere in the world has a problem — even, using an example, Saudi.
“They were due to hold major events this year, but at the moment they are not looking to do that until early next year.

Angry Eddie Hearn tells nightmare neighbours his Matchroom HQ fight nights will be less rowdy than dad Barry’s 70th

EDDIE HEARN floored his nightmare neighbours by promising his back-garden Fight Camp will not be as wild as his dad’s 70th birthday bash.
Seven Brentwood residents complained to the council about Hearn’s decision to hold four boxing shows in the grounds of his HQ — once the family home — during August.

    2

Hearn is incredibly proud of the Fight Camp set up in his gardenCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Because there will be no live audience, the Matchroom boss does not need a licence as long as his ring and giant canopy come down after 28 days.
But that still was not enough for some of the Essex locals who remember the raucous shindig the Hearns held at the mansion for dad Barry two years ago.
Ahead of the first show on Saturday, Hearn said: “The only thing we’ve done in the garden of note is my dad’s 70th birthday and that was wild and did go on till 5am.
“They were saying, ‘We remember when he had the 70th, it was loud’.

“But the truth is the only noise you’re going to hear from here is the ring walk, which are not that loud. And a firework display with Sweet Caroline for week one and week four.
“One complaint was about international TV and people thought it would go on until the early hours — but we’ll be wrapped up by 11pm.

“The council confirmed we didn’t need a licence because we’re not selling tickets.
“This is great for Brentwood — we are spending £250,000 for everyone to stay at the local Holiday Inn, which is on its a***!”

Local amateur detectives have even accused Hearn of smuggling American MC David Diamante into the UK without the full 14-day quarantine.
So Hearn had to send the dreadlocked celeb’s flight details to the British Boxing Board of Control to keep the village busy-bodies off his case.

He said: “We’d a complaint yesterday from that lot, that David Diamante hasn’t been here for 14 days, so we had to send the flight details to the board to confirm.
“It’s pathetic. We had a handful of complaints but, truth be told, we have no neighbours — we have one 200 yards down there and one 500 yards down there.”
Matchroom founder Barry snapped up the sprawling pad for a snip in the 1980s and turned it into offices when he wanted to move further into the sticks.
But after struggling to find a buyer for two years — and letting a young Eddie squat there to make sure he was on time for work — it became the company’s office HQ.

    2

The Matchroom boss insists it will be a professional affair and that the neighbours have nothing to worry aboutCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Now Hearn Jr is looking forward to pulling back the curtains for the TV viewers.
He said: “My dad bought it for £200,000, 36 years ago.
“When we came here at five or six years old we couldn’t believe it. We were running around like crazy and loved the forest next door.
“When the company moved in I lived here while it was an office. I used to wake up at 8.30am, step in the shower and at 8.45 I was at my desk.
“People always say, ‘Is it not weird seeing people in rooms that you lived in’. I don’t see it like that.
“It’s a bit cheesy but everyone who works here is part of the family. It is a family home.
“Brentwood used to be a village and when it started to become more populated and less rural, they decided to move further into the country.
“They said to me, ‘You can stay here while it’s on the market and then you’ve got to go’. They took everything out of the house other than my bed, a TV and a sofa.

Garcia was first in line to face Spence in January
But a month later the 30-year-old flipped his Ferrari, somehow coming out unscathed, although he was hit with a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated).
Spence vowed to change ways as he was “headed down path of destruction” and wanted to return in the summer.
But amid the coronavirus pandemic, his comeback has been postponed until the end of the year, according to The Athletic.
The welterweight pair have agreed to a pay-per-view headliner in the States, which is targeted for November.

But with fans targeted for the fight, it could be pushed back depending on Covid-19 guidelines for live crowds.
Spence was set to defend his 147lb titles against the former WBC champion in January, until his life-threatening car crash.
His trainer Kevin James insisted the unbeaten champion is in no need of a warm up bout ahead of his first fight since returning from injury.

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr PPV ‘will cost fans a staggering £39’ to watch exhibition boxing bout

MIKE TYSON’S boxing comeback against Roy Jones Jr will reportedly cost fight fans a staggering £39 on pay-per-view.
After months of teasing a sensational return to the ring on social media, 54-year-old Iron Mike signed the contract last week.

Roy Jones Jr has admitted he is fearful of going to war against Mike TysonCredit: Getty – Contributor
He will fight fellow boxing legend, 51-year-old Jones Jr, on September 12 in California.
And according to The Athletic, fight fans in the US will have to stump up $49.99, around £39, if they want to watch the exhibition bout.
But that is still well short of the highest PPV price in the US.
It cost fight fans $99 to watch Floyd Mayweather easily outpoint Manny Pacquiao in May 2015.

UK viewers had it much easier, costing £24.95 on Sky Sports Box Office.
Tyson Fury’s controversial draw with Deontay Wilder back in December 2018 cost Americans $75.
It is not known how much Tyson vs Jones Jr will cost for fans in the UK at the time of writing.
Tyson has been inundated with fight offers since he announced he was coming out of retirement after 15 years.

But it’s Jones Jr that will step into the ring with the former Baddest Man on the Planet first.
    JONES FEARS TYSON
The bout will be an eight-round exhibition but the age of its competitors has split opinion.
And even Jones Jr acknowledged the risk of fighting beyond the age of 50, especially against someone with the power of Tyson.
He told World Boxing News: “His legs are huge and his thighs are huge. His arms are huge and his neck is huge!
“It’s very risky, yes. But God’s in control of all.
“[Previously] I was beating everybody in every weight class I was in, so what you gonna do?

“It’s like David and Goliath. He’s a giant monster, we know.
“I’m little David and all I’ve got is God on my side, which is all I’m gonna need.”
    FIGHT WITH NO JUDGES
Tyson’s opponent last fought in 2018 and is a former pound for pound champ.
Tyson has shed six stone in anticipation for his return to the ring and promised to give everything once he climbs between the ropes.
Now it seems that the winner may only be determined via knockout – if either man even gets that chance.
It has emerged that the clash will be stopped if either receives a cut.
California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster spoke to Boxingscene.com to explain: “Tyson and Jones Jr won’t be wearing headgear for the fight.
“They’ll be lacing up 12-ounce gloves and there won’t be any judges present at the fight to score the action.
