Boxing can hold its head high compared to other sports when tackling racism.. everybody is equal in the ring

IT will be incomprehensible for today’s fans to understand that because of an accepted colour bar, black men were banned from fighting for British titles until 1948.
Imagine a situation where world champions like Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, Anthony Joshua, John Conteh, Lloyd Honeyghan and Maurice Hope, wouldn’t have been allowed to wear the Lonsdale Belt because of the colour of their skin.

Legend Duke McKenzie says in his 16-year boxing career he never suffered racism from a white opponentCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
It was a sustained campaign by national newspaper boxing writers at the end of World War II, that persuaded the British Boxing Board of Control, to abolish its blatantly racist policy.
And it was Dick Turpin, elder brother of the illustrious Randy Turpin, who made history by outpointing Vince Hawkins, to become British middleweight champion.
Sadly we are aware there are still various forms of hidden and overt racism in our major sports on and off the playing field.
It may surprise people but it’s boxing that can hold its head high with pride for being this country’s least racist.

That’s not my opinion but the considered view of the articulate and experienced black former champions I’ve spoken to on the subject.
You would think with black and white fighters knocking lumps out of each in the ring and in the gym it would lead to many instances of racial animosity.

But it appears the complete opposite is the norm.
It was Duke McKenzie, who held world titles in three weight divisions, who led me to conduct my mini-survey – admittedly completely unscientific.

I heard Duke say in a Sky interview not once in his 16-year career had he ever suffered the slightest racism from his white opponents, sparring partners or the fans.
And when I asked James Cook, the former European middleweight champion – who runs the famous Pedro youth club in Hackney – and Johnny Nelson, who held the world cruiserweight title for six years, they agreed wholeheartedly with McKenzie.
Cook, 61 told me: “We all had white trainers, white managers and promoters and we were treated no differently from the white guys.
“I never experienced a single incident of racial abuse inside or outside the ropes and I was 12 years a pro, had 35 fights and sparred hundreds and hundreds of rounds.
“If you want to know the reason why boxing is completely different from what goes on in football, it’s simply the nature of the sport.

Two huge Irish guys I knew were Storey fans walked menacingly towards me. I prepared for the worst but all they wanted was to pat me on the back and buy me the largest whisky I’ve seen.
    James Cook

“Fighters learn discipline and respect for their opponents, whoever they are and wherever they come from, the moment they lace on their first pair of gloves.
“There was only one occasion when I thought I was going to be in trouble.
“I’d knocked out Sam Storey in Belfast and the following morning I was at the airport waiting for my flight to London.
“Two huge Irish guys I knew were Storey fans started walking menacingly towards me.
“I was prepared for the worst but all they wanted to do was pat me on the back and buy me the largest whisky I’ve ever seen.”
Nelson said: “I was trained and managed by Brendan Ingle who ran the most multi-cultured gym in the world.

“We had all colours and creeds in there and the word racism wasn’t in our vocabulary because it simply didn’t exist.”
Robert Smith said in the 11 years he’s been the BBBofC’s secretary he hasn’t had to deal with a single fighter complaining he had been racially discriminated against.
When I asked him how many black fighters there were in Britain he said: “I haven’t a clue.
“When a boxer applies for a licence we don’t ask what colour he is or religion he belongs to.”
It would be naive in the extreme to claim there’s not a racist bone in boxing’s body.

But world heavyweight champion Joshua, a member of The Sun’s Time for Change panel, backed up the assertion that in the main boxing is racism-free.
AJ said: “I was never held back in boxing due to the colour of my skin. With other sports there may be issues.”
His evidence should be good enough for everyone.

Tyson, who retired in 2005 and claims to have not boxed since, has broken the internet on several occasions with his viral training clips.
But it was Jones’ turn to remind fans of his legendary skills after uploading some footage of himself taking on the pads.
The pound-for-pound legend – who last fought in 2018 – demonstrated impressive hand speed for his age, doubling up on the left hook.
Jones has been training for the pay-per-view spectacle from his home gym in Florida.

British middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr, 30, had been alongside the American great before his comeback against Tyson was announced.
And the pair have continued the work after Jones’ return was confirmed.
Eubank admitted Tyson was a “hero” of his – but cannot help but root for his new mentor.

Mike Tyson hugs ref Mills Lane in touching throwback snap years after disqualifying him for biting Holyfield’s ear off

MIKE TYSON was snapped hugging the ref who disqualified him for biting a chunk out of Evander Holyfield’s ear.
The photo of Iron Mike sharing an embrace with official Mills Lane has been doing the rounds online, seven years after it was originally taken.

Holyfield shocked the world in 1996 after stopping Tyson in the eighth round of their first bout.
But it was the rematch a year later that went down in boxing folklore.
Tyson was dramatically disqualified by Lane after BITING a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear.
Holyfield previously talked up the chances of the pair getting it on for a third time in aid of charity and explained how the ear episode still plagues him.

    4

    Mills Lane disqualified TysonCredit: Reuters
Holyfield told Sky Sports: “When people look at me, I know they are looking at my ear.
“People think I got the whole ear bit off!
“People don’t understand the relationship I have with Tyson.
“Tyson and I were both on the losing squad trying to make the Olympic team in 1984, that tells you how tough amateur boxing was in my day.

“When Tyson became heavyweight champion of the world, it made me realise that I could do it.
“Tyson and I had sparred and he was a tough guy even back then, when he was 17 and I was 21.”

For his part, Tyson revealed how the incident transformed him into the “most hated man in the world”.
He opened up on the ‘Bite Fight’ on ‘Mike Tyson Undisputed Truth’, and said: “I’m really very grateful that Evander forgave me for this.
“What was I thinking about? He lost a piece of his ear, I lost a piece of money. A lot of money and I lost my licence.
“All I could say is that I snapped. I went through pure hell. I went from the tenth most-hated man on the planet, which I can handle, to numero uno.”
Unfortunately Lane, who made that all-important call 23 years ago, suffered a devastating stroke in 2002.
Just four years after he retired from officiating in the ring, Lane suffered heartbreaking damage after the incident.
Moving is a struggle for him and he is unable to speak due to his deteriorating condition.

Tyson Fury sparks outrage by singing N-word while rapping along to Notorious B.I.G’s ‘Juicy’ at his 32nd birthday party

HEAVYWEIGHT champion Tyson Fury has sparked anger after using a racial slur while singing with his five children.
The WBC titleholder said the N-word while rapping to Notorious B.I.G’s track called “Juicy” during his 32nd birthday celebrations.

During an 11-minute video uploaded his Instagram, the Gypsy King is filmed entering the kitchen where his family await to shower him with gifts.
But after opening his presents, Fury can be seen holding his youngest child Prince Adonis Amaziah just 18-months old, when he begins to sing along.
A line of the lyrics that he sings is “And if you don’t know, now you know, n****.”
According to the Daily Mail, his young children also unknowingly repeated the slur while singing along.

With his wife Paris filming the celebrations, Fury added to the camera: “You’ve got to teach these kids the taste of real music. Biggie and 2Pac all the way.”
Included in the celebration was the couple’s other four children Venezuela, 10, Prince John James, eight, Prince Tyson II, three, and Valencia Amber, two.
The entire video was uploaded to Fury’s Instagram that boasts 3.8million followers.
It was captioned: “Birthday boy, Birthday morning with the family.

    “Got to love it. 2020”
However those who heard the derogatory term took to social media to vent their anger at Fury’s behaviour.
One wrote: “Why does Tyson Fury think it’s okay to say the n-word singing a song or not?”
Another added: “Tyson Fury saying the N word on his IG, let’s see if the British people cancel him like they did AJ for his Black Business comment.”
A third said: “Tyson fury will apologise for using the N word then say it was used in a song and he didn’t mean to offend whilst mentioning as a gypsy he knows how it feels. Book it.”
The comment comes on the back of worldwide Black Lives Matter protests in which major sports stars have continued to take a stand for racial equality.

Floyd Mayweather shows off his dazzling skills and speed in impressive training footage at 43 amid return talks

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is continuing to train amid talk he wants to make another comeback.
The 43-year-old retired from professional boxing in 2017 after beating former UFC champion Conor McGregor.

    5

But he last year announced plans to come out of retirement to work with UFC boss Dana White on a “spectacular event”.
White revealed Mayweather’s ring return is still on the cards and the American appears to be preparing for it.
He uploaded a video online showing off his dazzling skipping skills, which he called “light work”.
And further footage showed Mayweather hitting the heavy bag with sharp hooks.

SunSport revealed the 50-0 unbeaten legend was in talks for another exhibition spectacle in Japan.
Mayweather last year banked £7million after beating featherweight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, with RIZIN staging the event.
The Japanese promotion are open to working with the box office star again, but fear the coronavirus pandemic will prevent him from travelling.
White followed up by insisting Mayweather “wants to fight” – but ruled out a rematch with 32-year-old McGregor, who retired in May.

Mike Tyson return against Roy Jones Jr delayed to ‘make sure fans are allowed to watch bout amid coronavirus crisis’

MIKE TYSON could potentially make his boxing comeback against Roy Jones Jr in front of fans.
The eight-round exhibition was shifted from September 12 to November 28 to allow further time to promote the pay-per-view spectacle.

    2

Mike Tyson could potentially make his boxing comeback against Roy Jones Jr in front of fans
But YouTuber Logan Paul – whose brother Jake faces former NBA star Nate Robinson on the undercard – hinted the decision was made to wait and see if tickets can be sold.
Fans are not yet allowed back into arenas amid the coronavirus pandemic, despite hopes reduced crowds would return by October.
When asked why Tyson’s return was postponed with supporters already prohibited, Paul responded: “That’s not true. Depending on what state you’re in.
“Imagine if it was in a football stadium. They want to make sure the infrastructue is right.

“Dude, it’s Mike Tyson’s return. This is going to be one of the coolest things to happen in 2020.”
Organisers had pushed to take the exhibition to the Middle East but there was no such interest.
Instead it was set for California, with the event being streamed on social media app Triller.

And Paul added: “Apparently the traffic they’re getting to the site is so great, they’re truly trying to maximise capturing all audiences.

“They want to host the event somewhere massive and it takes a little careful navigating to make that happen.
“There’s only some states you’re allowed to do it.”
Under the California State Athletic Commission, Tyson and Jones were also due to box under strict orders, prohibiting KOs and not having judges score the bout.
But now an unnamed but recognised sanctioning body will oversee the fight, adopting more familiar rules.
Officials will be ringside scoring and the winner of the exhibition will receive a special belt.

Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Fight Camp to use new anti-coronavirus pod which could help fans return to Premier League

A POD that kills coronavirus will be used at Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Fight Camp on Friday.
It is the first time the technology has been used at a live sporting event – but talks have started over installing it at Premier League stadiums.

The sanitisation pod kills the coronavirus by spraying people with a fine mist as they walk through it.
Hearn has had the SpectriPOD tunnel installed at his Matchroom HQ ahead of Friday’s boxing event.
Staff, representatives from the media and even the boxers will have to enter via the pod.
The medically safe solution has been scientifically proven to kill 99.99996 per cent of germs.

A camera in the tunnel ensures spectators are wearing a mask and checks whether they have a temperature.
Matchroom chief Hearn said: “Right from the start we made it absolutely clear that we wanted all those attending the Fight Camp events to know they were safe.
“As soon as we heard about SpectrumX we were interested and after reviewing the science and technology behind the system we wanted to add it to our safety protocols for the remaining fights.
“With the addition of the SpectriPOD along with swab testing, zoned areas and several other safety protocols, we have taken every solution available to us to create the safest possible environment for all those involved in the production of Fight Camp.”

The pod is in place for Friday’s event which will see Felix Cash face Jason Welborn and John Docherty against Anthony Fox.
The owners of the technology, SpectrumX Health Care, are in talks with several Premier League clubs.

Discussions have been held over installing the tunnels outside grounds in a bid to get fans back into the stadiums.
The SpectriPOD can process up to 1,800 individuals per hour – and combining more than one would allow venues to fill up quickly.
Damien Hancox, Co-Founder and Director of SpectrumX, said: “The SpectriPODs offer an efficient, safe and effective route towards the re-introduction of mass attendance at live sporting and cultural events.”

Floyd Mayweather in talks with Dana White over 2021 fight with pair ‘working together’ – but it won’t be vs McGregor

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is set for a shock return to fighting next year working alongside UFC chief Dana White.
But it won’t be against old foe Conor McGregor.

    3

The 50-0 boxer has not fought since his mega-money clash with the loudmouth Irishman in 2017.
But White has revealed that Money wants to return to action and is in talks with the undefeated star to make it happen.
White told Yahoo Sports: “Floyd wants to fight.
“He wants to fight. We’re going to probably … listen, I’m dealing with all the (expletive) that’s going on with 2020 right now.

“Floyd and I want to work together. We want to do something. We’re going to do something.
“I just need a little more time to get my (expletive) together.”

It wasn’t made clear by White if Mayweather would be fighting in the boxing ring or the UFC octagon.
The US star, 43, has been consistently linked with a return since swatting away McGregor.

But so far his only taste of action has been an exhibition fight with Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa.
Despite Mayweather having spent three years in retirement, White isn’t concerned.
He said: “No, it doesn’t concern me, but those are things that will all factor into the fight.
“Those are all things that will factor into the fight, 100 percent. … I don’t know. Those are questions that will be answered when you put the fight on.”

Despite the one-sided nature of their fight, many fans would love to see a repeat of Mayweather’s clash with McGregor.
However, White appeared to rule that out as an option, pointing to the fact the Irish UFC superstar has declared his retirement.
White said: “The Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight was the perfect storm. That thing was built from the fans to the media and became what it became.
“Conor McGregor is retired. Yes, Conor McGregor is retired.”
