Zak Chelli handed cruel draw against granite-chinned Jack Cullen on Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin undercard

ZAK CHELLI almost whacked his promising career back on track after being handed a cruel draw with granite-chinned Jack Cullen.
The Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin show got off to an almost-perfect start when the two English super-middleweights slugged it out for 10 rollercoaster rounds.

    2

Zak Chelli was handed a cruel draw with granite-chinned Jack Cullen
Cullen made the brighter star but relentless Chelli bullied and bludgeoned his way back into the contest and should have earned a comeback win before two judges made surprising calls.
Mark Lyson’s tally of 97-93 to Chelli looked fair and should have set the tone. But Ian John Lewis called it a draw and Victor Loughlin somehow had Cullen winning 96-95.
Cullen, a giant 6dt 3in super-middle, tried to make the better start  pinging double jabs at his rival.
But Chelli was happy to swallow a few long left hands as it gave the signal to hurl howitzer rights over the top that warned Cullen back early on.

Cullen – affectionately known as Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver – was busier again in the second, bouncing his towering frame on his toes and poking out his long jab, while Fulham’s Chelli, 22, remained flat and utterly focused on ending the fight with one savage loop of his right hand.
And, by the end of the third, Chelli’s left eye was a horrible purple bulge and Cullen’s nose was bleeding.
Chelli improved drastically in the fourth, finally using his jab and thudding Cullen to the body a couple of times.
Cullen’s double jab was far too predictable by the fifth and Chelli’s lead left hook was echoing gruesome noises across Eddie Hearn’s Brentwood garden.

    2

Cullen made the brighter star but relentless Chelli bullied and bludgeoned his way back into the contest
Cullen boxed his way back into the contest in the sixth but muscle-bound Chelli always looked on the cusp of landing a bout-ending assault .
Cullen’s corner told him the seventh was the perfect round for him to take over but the deep cut on the corner of his left eye was making his mission incredibly difficult.
Ringside promoter Eddie Hearn compared Chelli’s come-forward-and-throw-bombs style to his former world champion Carl Froch.
And a lead left hook and right hand combination looked straight out of The Cobra’s old playbook as Cullen’s grip on the fight vanished with time.
Round nine was a brilliant session with Cullen showing an iron will by staying upright after another Chelli peppering.

The soundtrack to the 10th was sickening, Cullen’s skull and torso were pounded with shots sending the noise of leather on flesh reverberating over the lawn.
The final bell ended a sensational start to the final show of Hearn’s summer fight festival at the perfect time, as neither warrior deserved to be carried out of his beautiful battle.
But Chelli deserved more, after losing last time out up at light-heavy, and will be more hurt by the scores.

Inside the Matchroom mansion, Eddie Hearn’s former home converted into office with gym, pool and helipad

THE Matchroom HQ in Essex is where boxing promoter Eddie Hearn makes all his key decisions.
Originally bought by his dad Barry around 30 years ago, it’s was the family’s former house before it became the home of boxing, snooker and darts.

Then, it cost Hearn Sr a meagre £200,000 – and was an upgrade from the Dagenham council house he grew up in.
The property boasts a gym and swimming pool, which Hearn’s staff and pool of fighters can use.
While in the lush expansive garden, you’ll find a helipad and occasionally a boxer working out with pads or going for a run.
Join SunSport for a tour inside.

    LEISURE COMPLEX
Matchroom HQ isn’t just a place where Hearn meets his fighters, conducts media days and draws out his plans for boxing domination.
It’s also a place that boasts a leisure complex, in which fighters can exercise with their trainers.
“The key to a healthy mind is a healthy body,” Hearn told The Daily Mail.
“We’ve got a pool and a gym upstairs, where the fighters come in for meetings, can have some sessions with their trainers and do some strength work in the pool.

“This pool has been used by a number of great fighters over the years – Chris Eubank, Jim McDonnell, and Darren Barker.
“It’s great to have this facility here, not only for our staff and our employers and our team, but also for our team of fighters.”
    INCREDIBLE GROUNDS
Surrounding the stately property are some stunning grounds.
It’s where Anthony Joshua and Co. love to go for a run, and even some outdoor pad work.
“There’s some great runs in the forest,” Hearn revealed.
“Many fighters have been seen through the years doing many a circuit.
“In the summertime, actually, a lot of them come out here and do their pad work, circuits and strength work.
“It’s a great feel and great to have the fighters here, when they are around.”

    THEY’VE COME A LONG WAY
Eddie’s dad Barry has come a long way since his own childhood.
He came from a Dagenham council estate, but made good as a promoter for the likes of Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn and Lennox Lewis.
Although Eddie is effectively in charge of the business these days, Barry still has the better office.
“This was the house my dad bought about 30 years ago,” he told TalkSport.
“He was from a council house in Dagenham, did well, and this was his first major purchase.
“I grew up here, so we feel great here and it’s been very good to us.
“He paid two hundred grand for it at the time. Looks like a good investment now, but more than the money this has been a very lucky place for us.
“We’re big believers in that and luck.”

    FIGHT ISLAND
Like Dana White has done with the UFC, Eddie has created his own ‘Fight Island’ to stage boxing matches.
However, his plans are more personal. Hearn is turning the mansion’s garden into a fighting arena, and events started from August 1.
Hearn said: “Our project restart is about staging live boxing from the garden there with a canopy.
“You’ve heard of Madison Square Garden and this is the new garden.
“We talked about doing boxing in studios and there’s a lot of people doing it. I just feel like when you are talking about a gladiatorial sport, like boxing, you need to create that moment, that energy, not just for the viewer at home but the fighter as well.
“We’ve got big plans. It looks fantastic. There’s still a long way to go. I think it’s 90 per cent for us. Anything could happen at any time.
    HOW IT’LL WORK
And Hearn has really thought it through.
“There’s a hotel at the bottom of the road that we will take over. On the Wednesday, before the Saturday, everybody will turn up. Fighters, Sky team, corners, our team will all be tested at a facility,” he continued.

Tyson Fury urged to fight WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in December if Deontay Wilder pulls out of trilogy

EDDIE HEARN urged Tyson Fury to face Dillian Whyte in December if Deontay Wilder “disappears”.
Fury, 31, dominated Wilder, 34, in February to clinch the WBC title and the pair are already signed to an immediate rematch.

    3

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are signed to a trilogy bout

    3

Dillian Whyte is the WBC heavyweight mandatory challenger
But Whyte, 32, has been told he will face the winner should he beat Alexander Povetkin, 40.
Wilder has remained radio silent since his first career defeat, leading to fears he is questioning facing Fury off the back of his humbling loss this year.
And with Fury adamant he will fight before the year is out, Hearn wants the world champion to face mandatory challenger Whyte in a “monstrous” heavyweight headliner.
He told Sky Sports: “If Deontay Wilder does go missing, and Dillian Whyte wins, the WBC should just order that fight immediately.

“I heard people talking about, ‘Oh, Fury will definitely fight this year, Wilder or not’.
“If he’s going to fight and Wilder’s not around, why not fight your mandatory?
“Tyson Fury against Dillian Whyte is a monstrous fight, you’re talking about a couple million pay-per-view buys.
“Ot generates a huge amount of interest and money so why wouldn’t you take that fight?

    3

“I don’t believe Tyson Fury is running scared of Dillian Whyte, I think he thinks he’ll beat him.
“I think that’s a great option for him if Wilder disappears. My ear tells me he won’t disappear, it might be his only shot at getting his belt back.”
Despite Whyte’s mandatory status, Fury’s UK promoter Frank Warren warned the Gypsy King is only interested in facing Anthony Joshua.
The heavyweight champions have verbally agreed to a two-fight deal in 2021.
And Warren revealed Fury could even vacate the belt to get the super-fight with Joshua over the line.
But Hearn – who promotes AJ and Whyte – insisted the unified champion wants to win all four titles and reign as undisputed king.
Meaning if Fury opts against facing his mandatory challenger, Joshua could rematch Whyte for the vacant WBC crown.
Hearn told iFL TV,: “People said from Fury’s team, ‘We are not fighting Dillian Whyte.

Anthony Joshua to face Kubrat Pulev on December 5 or 12 as Eddie Hearn plans to approach government about fans returning

ANTHONY JOSHUA is in line to face Kubrat Pulev on December 5 or 12 as Eddie Hearn plans to approach the government about fans returning.
The unified champion, 30, has not fought since beating Andy Ruiz Jr, also 30, in Saudi Arabia last December.

He was due to defend his titles against 39-year-old Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in June – until the coronavirus pandemic KO’d the heavyweight headliner.
But promoter Hearn reckons AJ could make his ring return by the end of the year – and possibly in front of his beloved supporter.
He told Sky Sports: “Firstly, anything can happen.
“But right now as we stand here the plan is Kubrat Pulev. We’re looking at December 5 or 12.

“I believe we can start approaching the government in September about starting to bring fans through the doors again.
“We believe that will happen in greater depth in October.”
Hearn already hinted the O2 Arena – where Joshua has not boxed since 2016 – was the front runner to host his comeback bout.
But whether a crowd is in attendance or not, the WBA, IBF and WBO king will not wait around, having been desperate to step between the ropes again.

Hearn said: “Anthony needs to fight.

Anthony Joshua ‘believes that Alexander Povetkin will WIN’ against rival Dillian Whyte, reveals Eddie Hearn

ANTHONY JOSHUA has tipped Alexander Povetkin to beat Dillian Whyte, according to Eddie Hearn.

Whyte faces Povetkin in a WBC title eliminator

A win for the Brit will guarantee him a shot at 31-year-old Tyson Fury’s WBC belt.
But AJ – who beat Povetkin in 2018 – is not confident old rival Whyte will get past the final hurdle standing in the way of his first world title shot.
Hearn told Sky Sports: “I don’t think AJ is the kind of guy to hope that Dillian Whyte will lose on Saturday.
“He actually, I think, believes that Alexander Povetkin will win on Saturday. I had a conversation with him the other day.

“This is a massive banana skin fight for Dillian Whyte.
“I don’t think Tyson Fury really feels too deeply about it, but of course in boxing, there’s so much bitterness.”

    3

Joshua, 30, became the first man to knock out Povetkin, following a shaky start against against the 40-year-old.
And despite secretly leaning towards the Russian, the unified champion has publicly backed Whyte to prevail in the heavyweight headliner tonight.

Joshua said: “Everyone has issues in training, if he [Whyte] trained right, he will come through.
“He is a fighter, Dillian. But Povetkin is a seriously skilled heavyweight – an Olympic gold medallist, a world champion whose only losses were against [Wladimir] Klitschko and me.

NICE LITTLE HEARNER Inside the Matchroom mansion, Eddie Hearn’s former home converted into an office with gym, pool and helipad
But he has insisted it has been necessary for the promotion after the sport was dreailed by Covid-19 for almost six months.
In an interview with Sky Sports’ head of boxing Adam Smith via DAZN, Hearn said: “This whole experience has been wild.
“I was worried about this, because of all the egos that we’re bringing into the bubble, but everyone has really embraced it.

“Everyone is walking around here with smiles on their faces. Dillian Whyte and his team are in their Winnebagos (RVs) playing Playstation.

“I can’t believe the success of this project. And to finish it with a show like this, with five fights like these — particularly the two huge fights on top — I’m really proud.”
Before adding: “This is a massive time for boxing. It’s the first time since boxing has returned that we’ve seen such big fights and a lot of people will be tuning in to witness.
“Financially, no gate for a card like this is a disaster. But we’ve worked so hard over the last ten years that I wasn’t prepared to come back and not make a statement.

“This is our way of making a statement, and you do that by investing. We’ve had a very fruitful ten years, so we can [afford to spend] a few quid to keep our momentum going.
