Dillian Whyte has Alexander Povetkin rematch clause and wants fight before end of 2020, confirms Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN has confirmed Dillian Whyte has a rematch clause with Alexander Povetkin – and they plan to exercise it ASAP.
Whyte looked to be cruising against the 40-year-old Russian, having twice floored him in the fourth, only to be knocked out cold a round later.

Eddie Hearn confirmed Dillian Whyte has a rematch clause with Alexander Povetkin

    2

Whyte was savagely knocked out against Povetkin
Povetkin’s stunning left uppercut saw Whyte’s WBC mandatory status for Tyson Fury’s belt go up in smoke.
But Hearn has backed the gutted 32-year-old to earn back his long-awaited title shot by exacting revenge on Povetkin.
He told Sky Sports: “We have a rematch clause. The first thing Dillian said when he came out was ‘Get me that rematch, get me that rematch’.
“It was a heavy knock down he’s going to have to take his rest.

“Povetkin is mandatory now but he won’t be called.
“The only person that was going to get called to negotiate the winner of Fury – Wilder was was Dillian Whyte.
“We have a rematch clause. We will look to make that at the end of the year.
“It’s a huge fight. It’s a very dangerous fight, obviously back to back defeats for Dillian Whyte throws a different shade on it.

Dillian Whyte STUNNED by Alexander Povetkin as Russian gets up from canvas to land huge KO

DILLIAN WHYTE blew 1000 days as No1 contender inside 15 minutes against Alexander Povetkin after a brutal KO.
The WBC interim and silver belt contest was billed as the ‘battle of the left hooks’ but it was a brilliant left uppercut that left the 32-year-old spark out on his back in the fifth.

    5

Alexander Povetkin stunned Dillian Whyte with a savage knockout

    5

Whyte was left out cold on the canvas
Whyte scored two knockdowns on the 40-year-old Russian in the fourth round and looked to be coasting toward a 12th consecutive win and his long overdue title fight against the winner of Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder’s trilogy.
But the referee did not even need to count when Povetkin detonated a sensational shot on the Body Snatcher and robbed him of all of his dreams.
Whyte made a slow but steady start with half a dozen crisp jabs ramming into his rival’s face.
Povetkin was not as patient, hurling two wild haymakers over the top that Whyte dodged, making the celebrated amateur look amateur.

The couple of punches Povetkin did land were hooks to the body but they did nothing to worry the 18st Jamaica-born powerhouse.
Both bangers went to the body in the second, Whyte aiming his trademark left hook lower than usual to look for the Soviet’s ribs.

    5

Whyte had Povetkin down twice in round four
Povetkin rammed a couple of right hands toward Whyte’s gut but he never looked and he blocked the first looping left hook Povetkin aimed at his chin.
The South Londoner started the third with a thudding left hook to Povetkin’s temple that should have put him in the driving seat for the rest of the session.

But the wiley old 2004 Olympic gold winner slugged his way back into the rounds and might have pulled it back on the scorecards.
Whyte almost had the fight won in the fourth when he dropped Povetkin twice in the fourth. A couple of right hands  and a left hook collapsed him early in the round.
The interim champ kept his cool, didn’t get greedy and waited until the end of the shift to again floor Povetkin with a left uppercut.
But Povetkin connected with a perfect peach of a shot and Whyte’s career was left in tatters.

    5

Povetkin won the WBC Diamond heavyweight belt
The Brixton ace – who was stabbed and shot during a brutal childhood spent raising hell on the South London streets – wore a costume stab vest for his ring walk but it could not protect him against the savage blow.
Whyte spent 22 weeks training at his new Portugal training camp, a move that cost him his partnership with trainer Mark Tibbs.
He dropped around 18lbs after ballooning up to 19st 5lbs for a sluggish win over Mariusz Wach in Saudi Arabia in December.
Once he landed back in the UK on Tuesday he checked into the Brentwood Holiday Inn but chose to shack up on a couple of Winnebagos to avoid the Russian veteran.
Whyte and promoter Eddie Hearn claimed the motorhome motel was a necessary move to prevent any pre-bout rumbles but their cordial media duties on Thursday and Friday made the caravans look little more than a clever PR stunt.

Povetkin scored a savage win over Liverpool’s David Price in 2018 and outpointed Hughie Fury a year later. An patriotic Brixton boy Whyte insisted he had been eyeing up a revenge mission on the Soviet for two long years.
But Whyte’s two-fight nemesis Joshua – who was on the site for commentary duty – was not as generous to his fellow Londoner and backed Povetkin to land a shock win over his old rival.
And AJ was proved right as the man he beat in 2018 utterly flattened by the man he beat in a 2015 barnstormer.

Katie Taylor retains undisputed titles with repeat win against Delfine Persoon in thriller on Dillian Whyte undercard

KATIE TAYLOR finally settled the score with Delfine Persoon in another sensational fight for women’s boxing.
The undisputed lightweight queen was haunted by a year of questions about her controversial June New York points win over the Belgian police inspector.

    5

Katie Taylor finally settled the score with Delfine Persoon in another sensational fight for women’s boxing
But she put the brilliant rivalry and any doubts about the place at the very top of the sport to bed with a more clinical performance that brought that steaming Madison Square Garden night back to blustery Brentwood.
After 10 two-minute rounds of 35-year-old Persoon hurling bombs and Taylor, 34, showing all of her Olympic pedigree with backfoot point scoring, the judges scored it 96-94 twice and 98-93.
The Wicklow warrior said: “”It’s never easy against Delfine, she is relentless.
“I knew I had to dig deep.I boxed better than last time. I stuck to my boxing more. That got me through.

“I hit her with clean shots but she attacked all the time. What an amazing two fights for women’s boxing.
“I was more convincing tonight. I got a convincing win.”
Persoon bundled forward as soon as the bell started the show, just as she did in America last summer.
But Taylor clipped her with an early left-hook counter and the Belgian stumbled back into the ropes.

Taylor’s early tactics were perfect, she was happy to step back and let Persoon walk on to heavy shots.
One-twos, straight right hands and a body shot all scored as the Irish icon made her nemesis miss repeatedly with her celebrated amateur footwork.

By the third, Persoon’s right cheekbone was a mess of torn flesh and bruising but Taylor was getting dragged deeper into a slugfest after such a clinical one-sided start.
Bray legend Taylor showed more glimpses of her 2012 Olympic gold winning skill in the fourth but Persoon was again so brutish and unrefined that Taylor seemed once again befuddled by her tornado tactics.
In the fifth Taylor had her family whooping for her expert precision punching but for every couple of point-scoring shots she landed, Persoon walloped her with a whack straight off the cobbles.
Taylor broke down in the second half of the Madison Square Garden showdown and she was showing similar signs of fatigue in the Brentwood garden as Persoon manhandled her again.

Taylor dipped to the deck twice in the eighth out of sheer exhaustion and she was chinned heavily but brilliantly shrugged it off.
Taylor’s ninth round head movement was excellent and her clever combinations were not cancelled out by ungainly but damaging haymakers from Persoon.
The sensational encounterer finished with both brilliant women barely able to breathe, hurling their hands and cemented at the top of the sport.

Anthony Joshua ready to take £5m hit by fighting behind closed doors as he looks to shake off ring rust

ANTHONY JOSHUA is ready to take a whack in the pocket by fighting behind closed doors.
Watford’s heavyweight king rakes in around £5million from ticket sales for his sold-out UK showdowns — so a fan-free 2020 bout was originally ruled out by promoter Eddie Hearn.

    3

Anthony Joshua is ready to take a £5m whack in the pocket by fighting behind closed doors

    3

Joshua, seen at the Whyte vs Povetkin fight, has not fought since December 2019
But with Covid-19 refusing to go away and the one-year anniversary of his last fight approaching, WBA, IBF and WBO champ AJ is eyeing up a very different return to the ring.
WBC holder Tyson Fury informed his matchmaker Frank Warren he wants a December fight, whatever the restrictions in place.
And Joshua has told Hearn a similar thing.
Hearn revealed to SunSport: “AJ wants to fight this year — and he will fight.

“Hopefully by December we will be in a situation where we can have a full, or close-to-full, O2.
“Because when you talk about no crowds causing a hole in budgets, his is around £5m.
“To counter that, we either have to find a site fee from someone or a way to bring crowds back.

“But he will fight, he has to, otherwise it will be a year out of the ring. We have to get him back in 2020.

“I would put him on behind closed doors now, yes. The numbers wouldn’t be as good — but he is prepared to do it.”
Joshua, 30, had booked a June 20 IBF mandatory defence against Kubrat Pulev at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, before the coronavirus struck.
And Hearn admits that the ongoing uncertainty the pandemic has caused means there are now more options on the table.

    3

AJ is eyeing up a very different return to the ring
He said: “Right now, the plan is still to fight Pulev, as he is the mandatory challenger.
“But this situation has put everything up in the air and there are a lot of moving parts.
“Anything can happen because people have to deliver more value.
“Joshua wants to fight Fury but he wants the WBC belt — the only one he is missing — more.
“He could fight Tyson Fury for it, he could fight Dillian Whyte for it. But that is now the belt he wants.”

I would put him on behind closed doors now, yes. The numbers wouldn’t be as good — but he is prepared to do it.
    Hearn on Joshua’s next fight

For a decade, Matchroom chief Hearn and Queensberry boss Warren have avoided each other at all costs.
But Warren and his BT broadcasters sent a public challenge to the competition last month in a bid to set up some mouth-watering cross- stable clashes.
A lunch date is in the diaries — yet Hearn remains suspicious and will refuse to hand his nemesis a slice of the pie he has worked so hard to bake.
Hearn said: “I don’t want to sound arrogant but we have been competitors for ten years and they have written us probably two dozen legal letters, complained about us to the Board and slagged us off.
“And now we are No 1 and they are struggling, so they want us to work together.
“I won’t be arrogant enough to say ‘f*** off’, so if it works for our broadcasters and fighters I will look at it. But personally I am happy with what we are doing.

“I don’t think Sky has any desire to partner with BT on boxing — and Matchroom has no desire to partner with Frank Warren. But we do have a desire to make good fights.
“It’s been a strange relationship, I have just been in my own lane and they have always tried to run me off the road.
“So I have no desire to just say, ‘Let’s hold hands and help each other,’ because they haven’t tried to help me for the last ten years.”

Chris Kongo ends 16 months of misery with brutal KO win over Luther Clay on manager Dillian Whyte’s undercard

CHRIS KONGO ended 16 months of misery with a brutal KO win over Luther Clay in another Saturday night cracker.
The Dillian Whyte-managed welterweight was in his first fight since April 2019 following injuries and bad luck and what a fight it was – with Clay more than playing his part in the barnstormer.

The winner roared: “”I knew I had the speed, I knew I had the power. I just had to pace myself.
“When it got into the middle rounds, I hurt him and I knew I’d get him out of there.
“Look what I done there when I was out 16 months.
“I believe I can be one of the best contenders in the world in the welterweight division.”

Towering Kongo had four inches on the bullish Bracknell slugger but he was chased around the ring for nine thrilling rounds before ending the clash in assassin-like style.
Little South Africa-born Clay targeted Kongo’s long ripped body from the off, trying to chop down his height advantage.
But when the 27-year-old tried similar tactics Clay smiled and shook his head to say he could not be hurt to the trunk.

Kongo started making his size advantage count in the second and his corner yelled praise when he used clever feints to lure the 24-year-old into out-of-range attacks.

Kongo started the third well, scoring with flush body shots that would surely slow his smaller opponent down as the rounds ticked by.,
But Clay clipped him with a right hand to the temple that would keep Kongo honest for a few more sessions at least.
Uni-grad Clay remained on the front foot throughout the fourth, always marching forward but he walked into a punishing Kongo left hook that seemed to stun him.
A chunk of the fifth was hard to watch as Kongo had his prey pinned to the ropes and unloaded what seemed like a dozen spiteful punches into him.
Clay showed marvellous courage by clinging on and staying vertical but Team Kongo were confident the end was coming.
Kongo’s engine seemed to wilt in the second half and too often he was caught using his gangly arms to hold and grab and spoil a great contest.
Clay’s grit was staggering, he refused to give the bigger man a second of rest but Kongo’s left hook was a mean deterrent.

Tyson Fury tells Floyd Mayweather he will ‘smash’ Deontay Wilder in trilogy fight – not matter what he teaches him

TYSON FURY told Floyd Mayweather he will “smash” Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight – no matter what he teaches him.
Wilder, 34, was dominated last February as he surrendered his WBC title to Fury, 31, after two knockdowns and seven rounds of defeat.

Floyd Mayweather has offered to train Wilder
Afterwards, retired Mayweather – who has taken up coaching – announced his desire to train the Bronze Bomber to avenge defeat.
But Fury has warned the 43-year-old not to bother.
He tweeted: “No matter what you teach him, I will smash him.”
Mayweather toured the UK in February and was asked how Wilder could possibly win back the heavyweight title.

He responded: “If I train him. If I train him I can teach him how to win.”
Wilder was due to get his crack at revenge this summer but the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the heavyweight headliner.
Fury’s first WBC title defence then looked set for December, but without fans able to attend promoter Bob Arum admitted it could be backdated to 2021.
But that does not suit the Gypsy King, who has told his UK matchmaker Frank Warren to find him another opponent on home soil to keep busy.
