Alan Minter honoured with magnificent middleweight war-draw between Denzel Bentley and Mark Heffron

ALAN MINTER was honoured with a magnificent middleweight war-draw between Denzel Bentley and Mark Heffron on Saturday night.
The Olympic bronze winner and unified 11st 6lbs king died aged 69 last week, after a long battle with cancer, and his old division celebrated his life and career with a ten-round slugfest that the judges could not split.

Minter only fought once at the iconic York Hall venue before going on to rule the world, but this showing – after a ten-bell salute in his memory – was a wonderful way to remember his achievements across the country.
SunSport was ringside again at the behind-closed doors show to see Heffron spear out his long and powerful jab first, to get Bentley thinking but the Battersea banger was sharp from the off.
When another jab was aimed at his head he caught it and fired back a sweet left hook that was the first serious blow of the bout.
Bentley had trainer Martin Bowers bellowing praise with his movement and a crisp one-two that rattled into Heffron’s skull.

In the second Bentley switched to southpaw and enjoyed instant success.
The 25-year-old pulled back out of range from a Heffron jab and pinged out a left hand that didn’t seem powerful but dropped the Oldham man to the floor.

Heffron was hurt by the 10-8 round and raced into the third as the aggressor again but Bentley used it to his advantage.
Pinned in his own red corner, Bentley weathered an assault before landing a sweet counter right hook and an arrow-like left hand.

Heffron, 28, was relentless again in the fourth but Peacock gym ace Denzel caught him with a beautiful uppercut that stiffened his legs briefly.
The fifth was one Heffron got to enjoy, bullying Bentley from corner to corner with booming right hands but never quite landing a concussive blow.
Heffron did land cleanly and heavily a couple of times in the sixth but Bentley proved his chin as his 13th pro fight entered the trenches.
Heffron’s perseverance beat Bentley’s precision in the seventh when too few of the South Londoner’s clever counters connected and the 25-1 powerhouse was allowed to dictate the pace again.
Heffron was a terrifying 21-0 middleweight wrecking ball before he met Liam Williams for the British title in 2018 and was stopped but he was showing signs of his old form with this bullish performance.

And Bentley was almost knocked clean out in the ninth when a right hand in the corner robbed him of his senses.
The shot was so powerful his whole body seemed to go into shock for a nano second but he snapped out of it incredibly quickly and survived.
Bentley looked uncharacteristically sluggish in his first lockdown fight at the end of July and Heffron finished the fight in trademark whirlwind fashion before Michael Alexander, Steve Gray and Bob Williams all called it 95-95. More

Tyson Fury’s new trainer SugarHill Steward arrives in UK to work with champ for first time since coronavirus lockdown

SUGARHILL STEWARD has returned to the UK to train Tyson Fury for the first time since coronavirus lockdown.
The WBC heavyweight champion has not been able to work with his new trainer for six months due to the pandemic.

But the American has now arrived to the UK to put the Gypsy King through his paces again.
SugarHill replaced Ben Davison in Fury’s corner just two months before his rematch with Deontay Wilder.
Fury revealed he had teamed up with the former Detroit policeman to improve his punching technique.
And he made no mistakes as he brutally dethroned the Bronze Bomber to claim the WBC heavyweight crown.

SugarHill, who is the nephew of Hall of Fame trainer Emmanuel Steward, had claimed he was ready to retire.
But it appears his retirement plans are on hold as the Gypsy King prepares for his trilogy fight with Wilder.
Although he has not trained with SugarHill for months, Fury has kept himself fighting fit.

Anthony Yarde KO’s Dec Spelman to continue comeback from Sergey Kovalev defeat

ANTHONY YARDE announced himself back on the British boxing scene with the first stoppage of Dec Spelman’s career.
The 29-year-old went to Russia in August 2019 and came up short in a light-heavy world title shot against Sergey Kovalev.

    3

Anthony Yarde had too much for Dec Spelman

    3

The headline bout saw Anthony Yarde continue his recovery from a first defeat

He enjoyed a Spanish tune-up win in February but was back in his East London home on Saturday night to take his record to 20-1 against rock-hard Spelman.
Yarde was missing his range in the opener, hurling two massive haymakers high and wide of his heavily-tattooed target.
Part-time builder Spelman laid down some good foundations with a right hand that had trainer Carl Greaves cheering through his mask.
The second came and went with minimal fanfare – much like the last tube – as the catchweight bout creeped painfully toward Sunday morning.

Scunthorpe’s Spelman landed with a left hook in the third but his nose was leaking blood by then from one of Yarde’s increasingly more accurate digs.
Ilford ace Yarde was growing in confidence and precision by the fourth and his chopping right hands and uppercuts were slicing through Spelman’s guard more frequently.
And three hooks to Spelman’s ribs at the end of the session echoed around the Bethnal Green arena.
Spelman entered York Hall with four defeats but none inside the distance and he felt Yarde’s profile was built on hype more than power.

But he was on the end of several savage shots in the sixth and was finally dropped by a brutal right hand around his left ear.
Referee Michael Alexander waved it off and Spelman was furious at suffering the first TKO of his career.
But Yarde was too busy leaping onto the ropes to yell his “Lions in the camp” catchphrase before moving on to hunt his next victim.

Roy Jones Jr reveals overcoming suicidal thoughts and being raised to be ‘a killer’ ahead of Mike Tyson fight

Tyson, 54, apparently wanted to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.
But after an incredible body transformation, he will take on 51-year-old Jones Jr instead.
Boxing fans can’t wait to see the pair in action.
And Tyson’s opponent Jones Jr admits he had to get past some tough mental blocks in his youth to become the man he is today.

Jones Jr told the Mail: “Yes it’s true. It was because of the pressure from my father.
“I thought if I got to take this, I’m gonna be dead, but then I talked to God.
“And I said, ‘Well, if I’m doing it, because this is how you want me to be, you want me to succeed at something, but it’s part of the process then I got to stay and keep up’.”
Jones Jr also insists he is now a “killer” and ready to do some damage, adding: “Nothing wrong with my father’s parenting skills, because my father wanted to prepare me to be the best at what I do.

“And to do that you have to separate parenting from… you had to bring me up as a killer at a certain age.
“And guess what I’m a killer. Any rivals they got to go.
“And when you’re doing it, you create a competition, because everything you do is competition.”
Despite being billed as the underdog, Jones Jr is highly confident ahead of the bout, explaining: “Chances? I don’t have chances, I win. I ain’t winning, I ain’t going in there.
“What are his chances? I don’t have chances, I go for the win.
“You make one mistake, you’e out for the night. You still gotta be careful, just because you’re speedy and fast.
“You have to be careful because you can run into something that makes it twice as devastating. How can you stop somebody from knocking somebody out?
“He (Tyson) had an exhibition in 2003, knocked the guy out in the first round. So how are you gonna stop him from knocking somebody out? That’s all he knows.”

Oleksandr Usyk bizarrely calls out Derek Chisora while CANOEING as he targets October 31 showdown with Brit boxer

UKRAINIAN puncher Oleksandr Usyk bizarrely called out Derek Chisora… while out CANOEING.
The 6ft 3in heavyweight was supposed to take on “War” at the O2 back in March.

    2

Oleksandr Usyk took to his canoe as he called out Chisora

But the coronavirus pandemic swiftly KO’d those plans, with promoter Eddie Hearn now targeting an October 31 bout between the pair.
And ahead of the much-anticipated fight Usyk, 33, is aiming to get ahead in the mind games.
He took to Instagram to post a video of himself calling out Chisora’s name.
While riding a canoe in the late-summer sunshine, Usyk screamed “Derek”, while Tina Turner’s “The Best” played in the background.

The former cruiserweight champ then rowed off into the distance.
Usyk is certainly unwinding between training sessions in a very different way to Chisora, who was spotted riding an electric bike around Mayfair this week.
The October 31 meeting between WBO mandatory challenger Usyk and Chisora, 36, could be under threat from new government regulations limiting gatherings of more than six.
Hearn plans to have the pair meet at the O2 in front of a limited crowd.

Katie Taylor could fight ex-UFC star Cris Cyborg in world title boxing bout as Bellator chief gives green light

KATIE TAYLOR has been given the green light to face former UFC star Cris Cyborg in a world title boxing bout.
But the Irish star, 34, may have to agree to step into the octagon in return for the deal to take place.

    3

After undisputed lightweight champion Taylor secured a repeat rematch win over Delphine Persoon, the Olympic hero is already seeking a different challenge.
And it is thought an opponent from outside of boxing may be the answer for the WBO, WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring Magazine lightweight world champion.
Now Bellator president Scott Coker confirmed Cyborg could switch across from MMA to challenge the 16-0 Taylor.
Coker told The Telegraph: “I would be thrilled. This is a goal that is important to Cyborg.
“She told me a year ago when I signed her that she wanted to box and become a world champion in boxing.
“We have been approached by three or four females to fight, but while having a boxing title under her belt is something she wants to do, my request is – win, lose, or draw – when the boxing match is done, they reciprocate and come and have an MMA fight in the next six months.
“Then, in my view, it’s fair. If this is something she [Cyborg] wants to do, we are going to support her.”
Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn could get a deal over the line relatively easily due to both his and Bellator’s strong relationship with DAZN.

    3

Taylor boats a perfect professional record inside the ring, winning all 16 of her fights including six by knockout.
The two-weight world champ retained all her lightweight titles with the win by unanimous decision against Belgian Persoon in Hearn’s Brentwood back garden.
Cyborg, meanwhile, has 22 wins – 18 by knockout – from her 25 MMA fights with two defeats and one no contest.
The Brazilian, 35, lost her very first fight to Erica Paes in her homeland way back in 2005.
Her second defeat came against Amanda Nunes in December 2018 where Cyborg was forced to give up her UFC women’s featherweight championship.
She did, however, win the Bellator equivalent in her latest fight at Bellator 238, beating Julia Budd with a TKO.

MMA fighter and kickboxer Kharitonov wanted to make sure his debut was unforgettable.
The 40-year-old made his way to the ring alongside a huge grizzly bear.
Members of his team tried to keep the beast under control as it stood on its hind legs.

The stunned commentator said: “That’s a real life bear!
“That’s not a man in a costume! I’ve seen it all now.”
A heavy metal rock band was also playing inside of the arena in Khimki, near Moscow.
Williams, who has a record of 54-29, could not keep his nerve in the ring before he threw in the towel.
