George Foreman reveals why he never fought Mike Tyson and wanted nothing to do with the ‘monster’ boxer

GEORGE FOREMAN branded Mike Tyson a “monster” as he revealed why he did not want to step into the ring with his rival.
The two-time heavyweight champion was tipped to fight the Baddest Man on the Planet when he made his comeback in 1987.

But Foreman, 71, has admitted he “didn’t want anything to do” with the hard-hitting American, 54, during his career.
He told ESPN: “That guy was a nightmare in the ring. I didn’t want anything to do with that guy.
“I didn’t want a part of Mike Tyson. He was a monster.
“If he missed you with his left, then missed you with his right, he’d bite you.

“Those are the kind of guys you see in a nightmare.
“You want to wake up and say, ‘So glad that’s a dream.’
“I didn’t want any part of Mike Tyson – no way.”
Foreman revealed the feeling was mutual as he admitted Tyson was not keen on fighting him either.

He added: “He was scared and I was glad of that.”
The 71-year-old told On The Ropes boxing: “There were a couple of times, serious negotiations were going on with the Mike Tyson fight.
“Mike Tyson just didn’t want to fight me. Not to say he couldn’t have beaten me.
“I mean, this guy could punch. The bigger they are the harder they’d fall as far as Mike Tyson was concerned.”
Tyson, who offered a zoo keeper £9,000 to fight a silverback gorilla, was crowned the youngest heavyweight world champion in 1986, aged 20.

Floyd Mayweather once KO’d heavyweight with brutal body shot during a sparring session as training secrets are revealed

FLOYD MAYWEATHER once dropped a heavyweight in sparring after just 30 seconds with a body shot, it has been revealed.
The 43-year-old unbeaten ring legend was renowned for his intense training sessions that lasted hours and would even take place in the early hours of the morning.

    2

Floyd Mayweather is said to have once dropped a heavyweight in sparring

Mayweather was a pioneer for HBO’s ’24/7′ and Showtime’s ‘All Access’ pre-fight shows that would follow fighters with unprecedented access to their preparation.
But the American would have one restriction – there could be no filming of his sparring sessions.
Former Mayweather training partner Dmitriy Salita, now a promoter, has lifted the lid on what went on during these secret spars, as he revealed the five-division champion once floored a cocksure heavyweight with ease.
Salita told EsNews: “We were at the gym just hanging out, it was after one of Floyd’s fights.

“This guy comes into the gym, a heavyweight and said, ‘I wanna get some boxing’ and he was just talking a lot of smack.

    2

“There was no-one big enough to spar so Floyd was like, ‘Leonard [Ellerbe], get my stuff from the car’.
“Floyd got in the ring with him for 30 seconds and does his shoulder roll and block and just hits the guy with a body shot, and drops him, a heavyweight.”
Former sparring partner Salita revealed Mayweather would spar four-minute rounds, with just 15 SECONDS breaks in between.

Mayweather retired officially in 2017 after beating UFC star and ring debutant Conor McGregor, but did return for an exhibition bout against Japanese kickboxer Tension Nasukawa a year later.
Despite leaving the sport on a perfect 50-0 record, the former pay-per-view king announced last November that he was “coming out of retirement in 2020” to work with UFC boss Dana White.

Mayweather said he would “absolutely” be interested in rematching McGregor or fighting UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but insisted he would not face a recognised boxer.
Despite the comeback talks and clips of him returning to training, the 43-year-old was hit with double tragedy as his former partner and mother to three of his kids Josie Harris died a week before his uncle and ex-trainer Roger passed away.
Mayweather then announced online his attention had switched to becoming a trainer, having been inspired by Roger, as he took his son Kouran and nephew Chris on the pads.

Protein-packed steaks are making him strong again for his comeback against Roy Jones Jr, 51, in Carson, California, on November 28.
Tyson said of his vegan diet: “I stopped because of the training and because of what I wanted my body to look like and the strength that I wanted to poses.
“I only eat elk and bison — wild stuff — and I’m starting to feel fit.
“I realised the stuff that’s good for other people — like kale, vegetables and blueberries — for me is really poisonous.”

Josh Warrington savouring Leeds’ first home Prem game in 16 years after being on Cooper’s shoulders at promotion party

I’VE waited 16 years for this moment — Leeds back at Elland Road in the Premier League.
The fans would just love to see the players come out with the Prem badge on their shoulder.

    7

Josh Warrington celebrated Leeds’ promotion on the shoulders of captain Liam Cooper

It’s a massive shame we cannot be there but when allowed back I know we will revel in every little bit.
I’ve had relatives saying they didn’t think they’d see Leeds back in the Premier League in their lifetime.
The people have been starved of success for so long, and that’s why the celebrations went on in the city for a few weeks.
Back in July, my wife and I were going out for a bite to eat.

We arrived to park at 7.20pm but she said: “Because you’re always late I’ve booked it for later, so we’re not meant to go in until 7.45pm.”
If West Brom didn’t beat Huddersfield then the wait was over, so I listened on the radio.
We went into the restaurant after and I was just numb. I sat there and enjoyed it, but I was just numb.
I needed to soak in what had just happened so said to my wife that we needed to drive past Elland Road.

    7

    7

The boxing world champion joins the the jubilant celebrations

We got there and it was absolutely jam-packed.
One of the directors called and said: “Josh, you need to be part of this as well. If you’re near Elland Road, get yourself in and come and celebrate.”
I told him it’s funny you say that as I’m just around the corner. I pulled into the ground and the next minute I’m on Liam Cooper’s shoulders celebrating with the players.
Nearly two decades earlier, as a ten-year-old, I went to my first-ever match to watch us play Tottenham.
David Batty, Lucas Radebe, and Mark Viduka were my favourites growing up.
And I loved Alan Smith, even though he ended up at Manchester United.
Leeds were flying high, so it was just the done thing to be a Leeds fan.
Kids wore Leeds shirts in the playgrounds, they had Leeds backpacks and pencil cases — you didn’t come to school with a Chelsea or Man United shirt.

    7

Warrington won the IBF featherweight title at Elland Road

    7

Premier League newbies were narrowly beaten 4-3 by champions Liverpool
You supported Leeds because you were from Leeds, and that’s that.
I won my first-ever shirt in a raffle and it was three times too big. My second was the Nike Strongbow one and I wore it until the letters fell off.
I think I was spoiled in my first season and I’ve been paying for it ever since!
You think it’s going to be like that every week and then, as you get older and football starts to affect your emotions, things started to go Pete Tong.
I clearly remember relegation in 2004. We were listening on the radio in the garden and I said to dad: “Bloody hell, what happens now?”
He replied: “Don’t worry son, we’ve been here before and we’ll be back before you know it.”
I don’t think even he anticipated it taking 16 years!
While I’ve had a season ticket for a while now, for a lot of years it was a case of whether I could extend the overdraft to afford to go.

Today I’ll be watching from home, but normally I go with my brothers and am the designated driver.
I’d love to go out for a pint and a pie beforehand, but more often than not I’m in the gym sparring on a Saturday morning.
Unfortunately, while I’d have given anything to be scoring goals at the old Kop End, I’ve got banana feet.
So the next best thing was winning a world title at Elland Road, as I did in 2018 to become Leeds’ first boxing world champion.
The nerves are different but you do get butterflies as a fan.
I’ve met Marcelo Bielsa. He’s not the most sociable character in the world but he has played a massive role as the whole make up of Leeds United has taken a full-on rejuvenation.
We really took it to Liverpool last week, showing them no respect whatsoever.
I said before the season that we will finish in the top half.
And after watching us stick three in at Anfield, there is no reason why we can’t.

Logan Paul posts then deletes pic of boxing licence after he’s called out by Conor McGregor’s coach over Mayweather bout

LOGAN PAUL posted then deleted a picture of his professional boxing licence after being ridiculed by Conor McGregor’s head coach.
It comes amid rumours Paul – who lost his pro debut against YouTube rival KSI last November – could face Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition bout.

    4

Logan Paul lost his pro boxing debut to KSI last year

    4

Floyd Mayweather has been approached to box Paul

Mayweather, 43, last boxed as a pro in 2017 beating McGregor but in 2018 returned to beat featherweight kickboxer Tension Nasukawa in one round in an exhibition.
And according to TMZ Sports, he has been approached about another exhibition spectacle which would see him remarkably box Paul.
John Kavanagh, who helped McGregor prepare for his boxing defeat three years ago, slammed the potential fight and questioned how it could even be sanctioned.

how is logan getting a pro license to fight mayweather? he has no pro combat sports experience? “yes but didnt conor get a boxing license to debut against him??” true, but you’re a slow donkey if you think that is in anyway similar to a youtuber getting one for his debut.
    — Coach Kavanagh (@John_Kavanagh) September 17, 2020

Kavanagh tweeted: “How is Logan getting a pro license to fight Mayweather?

“He has no pro combat sports experience? ‘yes but didn’t Conor get a boxing license to debut against him??’
“True, but you’re a slow donkey if you think that is in anyway similar to a youtuber getting one for his debut.”
Paul has in fact boxed twice, both against KSI – real name Olajide William Olatunji.
The first resulted in a draw after six exhibition rounds, but the pair controversially turned pro for their rematch at the end of last year.

He captioned the post: “Relax Karen.”
The 25-year-old American will not be in need of a licence if the bout is an exhibition.
Mayweather last year confirmed plans to come out of retirement, but revealed he would likely only box in exhibitions, opposed to returning as a professional.
Despite being approached for the mismatch bout, the American legend is said to be leaning towards rejecting the offer.

Johnny Nelson predicts outcome of Anthony Joshua clash with Tyson Fury as he reveals ‘both boxers want this fight’

JOHNNY NELSON has backed Anthony Joshua to beat Tyson Fury when the pair face each other next year.
The duo – who hold all four heavyweight world title belts between then – have agreed terms on a two-fight deal for 2021.

And AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed he is ready to send out a formal contract for the undisputed domestic dust-up.
But both men must first win in their next outing, with Joshua, 30, to face his IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev, while Fury, 32, pits his wits against Deontay Wilder for a third time.
Despite many believing that Fury is the No1 heavyweight on the planet, former WBO cruiserweight champion Nelson believes Joshua is the better all-round fighter.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Fury might say that AJ is scared and running, but both fighters want this fight.

“Both fighters are fighting men and confident of getting the win – so let’s never get that confused.
“This is something they want. Once they get their commitments out of the way there’ll be no more excuses.”
Pressed on who wins, he added: “That’s the tricky one. I’ve gone public in saying I think Anthony Joshua is the all-round better fighter.
“I think Tyson Fury is better tactically and the more technically equipped, but AJ is the all-rounder.

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury edges closer with Eddie Hearn set to send out formal contract for undisputed title fight

EDDIE HEARN says he is ready to send out a formal contract for the heavyweight unification boutt between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury.

WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO champ AJ’s promoter Hearn has been in regular contract with Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum, the Gypsy King’s US promoter, to try and finalise the unification clash.
Now the Matchroom chief hopes to iron out the final few details for his fighter’s shot at claiming Fury’s WBC title to add to his collection.
And he revealed he is ready to get the paperwork side of things underway.
Hearn told Sky Sports: “Yeah, I’ve been talking to Bob Arum about various things.

“Fury against Joshua is a big ambition of everybody involved, to be honest.

“We want to talk about it, but we also want to take care of business, which is Kubrat Pulev for AJ, and Deontay Wilder for Tyson Fury.
“I’m very sure you’re going to see two versions of that fight in 2021. I think we’re on the verge now of papering that deal with Bob Arum.
“We haven’t done it yet, but all the conversations are positive.

“We have a lot on our plates with the pandemic, making sure we keep boxing alive and trying to deliver those fights for AJ and Fury, but I think 2021, I’m very sure you’ll see those two fights.”
Top Rank president Todd duBoef stated earlier in the week that making sure the unification showdown takes place remains their top priority.

Whyte’s shock Povetkin KO defeat is a ‘godsend’ as Joshua and Fury could be more encouraged to fight him, says Nelson

DILLIAN WHYTE’S shock knockout defeat against Alexander Povetkin could prove to be “a godsend”, Johnny Nelson has predicted.
Whyte, 32, had spent more than 1,000 days as the WBC’s No1 challenger before his mandatory status went up in smoke following his upset loss.

    5

Dillian Whyte was knocked out by Alexander Povetkin – but it could be a godsend, says Johnny Nelson

But his past frustrations having been unable to fight heavyweight rulers Tyson Fury, 32, and Anthony Joshua, 30, could now be over.
Former cruiserweight world champ Nelson believes the top heavyweights may now be more encouraged to fight Whyte.
He told talkSPORT: “I actually think it might be a good thing.
“Now, after being knocked out, other fighters will think that’s twice now at this level.

“That’s the same shot that he’s been knocked out with – I’ll have some of that.

    5

“So that vulnerability makes him more enticing. The same thing with Anthony Joshua after Andy Ruiz made him look more enticing.
“If and when Tyson Fury loses, once you see the blueprint to beating somebody, then it’s like ‘ahhh, there you go!’
“There’s no blueprint for Fury right now, but when somebody finds it, things will get interesting.

“But I think for Dillian Whyte, him losing might actually be a godsend because when he was winning and winning and winning, people thought ‘nah, I don’t want any of that.’”
