Mike Tyson eases fan fears over health after slurring car crash GMB interview as boxing legend claims ‘I just woke up’

MIKE TYSON has eased fans’ fears after his ‘car crash’ interview on Good Morning Britain – by blaming his incoherent appearance on being tired.
The American legend, 54, was on to promote his November 28 comeback fight against Roy Jones Jr.

But Tyson seemed anything but his usual, energetic self, mumbling his words and speaking incoherently to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
The Baddest Man on the Planet even drooped his head several times and closed his eyes at points.
But Tyson revealed it was simply down to tiredness, with the interview taking place late in the evening for the Los Angeles-based star.
Tyson tweeted: “Hey mate @piersmorgan @GMB @susannareid100 and UK.

“I tried to stay up late for interview but fell asleep and like a lion I’m hard to wake once sleep.
“Training hard and going to bed early.
“I had no monitor so I couldn’t see you guys and forgot to look into camera.”
Morgan replied to Tyson, saying he appreciated the update given the outpour of worry from his fans.

Roy Jones Jr’s trainer says only a ‘legend’ like Holyfield or Hopkins could keep icon in the ring after Mike Tyson fight

ROY JONES JR will lace up the gloves one last time when he fights Mike Tyson – and only a ‘legend’ could convince him otherwise.
The American four-division champion faces Tyson on November 28, in an eight-round exhibition spectacle.

It comes 15 years on from Iron Mike’s last fight, when he quit after six rounds against Irishman Kevin McBride.
Jones on the other hand only retired in 2018, ending his career with four straight wins in America, but against unfamiliar opposition.
Now aged 51, he was convinced to make another comeback with the opportunity to finally fight the one who got away after he won the heavyweight belt in 2003.
It will be his 76th, and possibly final, career bout unless an opponent of Evander Holyfield or Bernard Hopkins’ calibre steps up to challenge the American icon.

Jones’ trainer Tom Yankello told SunSport: “I don’t think he would fight to just fight again.
“It would have to be a very presentable challenge to spark his interest again.
“There’s been talks, like Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver were saying they would want to fight again.
“He didn’t really comment on it too much but I just know if one of those guys were to present that challenge, I don’t see him turning it down.

“I know those two guys, and he hasn’t said this before but someone like Evander Holyfield, they would spark his interest to box again.
“I don’t think there’s anyone else out there, it would have to be a legend.”
Jones beat Hopkins at middleweight in 1993, but lost their light-heavyweight rematch 17 years later.
Similarly, he beat Tarver in 2003, but would lose the other two in their trilogy series.
Tarver, 51, Hopkins, 55, and Holyfield, 57, revealed they would come out of retirement following the news Tyson will fight again.

Trainer Yankello – who runs the World Class Boxing Channel on YouTube – had stopped working with the former pound-for-pound great in 2014.
But they linked up once more after Jones announced he would be welcoming Tyson back to the ring.
The pair have been switching between their respective homes in Pittsburg and Florida.
And Jones has been rolling back the clock in the gym, leaving pad man Yankello in shock at the speed of his punches.
He said: “His hand speed is still incredible.
“I don’t think his hand speed has decreased at all, he’s as fast as he was when I worked with him nine, almost ten years ago.

“His mobility is not maybe quite the same but he still has great agility, he’s kept himself in great shape.”
Yankello believes the qualities that first made Jones a legend at middleweight and super-middleweight also provides him the ‘blueprint’ to beat Tyson.
He said: “A lot of the things he did in the lighter weight classes, at middleweight and super-middleweight, those will be the things that he will bring to the table for this fight.
“Knowing the blueprint that has given Mike Tyson trouble in the past are things Roy does very well.
“This fight is at heavyweight but he has the skillset of a middleweight or super-middleweight and heavyweights are bigger guys that carry more power but the skillset of the guys at the lower weights have and still are better.”

Slurring Mike Tyson leaves Piers Morgan shocked after giving ‘car crash’ interview on Good Morning Britain

But rather than an acid-tongued quote machine, Tyson, 54, appeared to mumble his words and spoke incoherently, drooping his head several times and even closing his eyes.
Hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid looked uncomfortable during the chat this morning, at times not knowing where to look.
They continued through what one viewer labelled a ‘disaster of an interview’ filled with awkward pauses.
At one point, Reid asked Tyson what he thought of 51-year-old Jones Jr as a rival in the ring.

Tyson, who appeared groggy when he came in live from Los Angeles, mumbled back: “I don’t care what he says about me as an opponent.
“I’m just prepared to fight on Saturday night, November 28.”
On another occasion, cameras picked up Tyson with his head almost in his lap as Reid asked him about concerns over fighting again at his age.
Tyson finally lifted his head – but his reply appeared jumbled: “I think it’s very wonderful that we’re fighting together.

TV presenter Alex Beresford posted: “Hoping Mike Tyson is just tired? This interview on @gmb.”
In response to Beresford, another viewer said: “I was just thinking the same. He certainly looks high on something. No way he should be fighting, surely?”

A fellow user wrote: “That was a shocking interview, he didn’t look or sound with it.”
And one tweet read: “That was more than tiredness, he was under the influence of something! Can’t believe they allowed the interview! Unprofessional.”

Another concerned fan wrote: “What did I just witness? Am I the only one who couldn’t understand one single word what @MikeTyson was saying?”
Tyson appeared at around 6.50am this morning, around 10.50pm for him in the States.
The former heavyweight king stunned the world for all the right reasons when he released training videos ahead of his astonishing comeback fight.
Iron Mike, who last fought 15 years ago, looked sharp on his feet and appeared to have lost none of the ferocious power that made him one of the biggest names in sport throughout the Nineties.
Tyson announced in April he intended to make a comeback and he has undergone an amazing body transformation ahead of his ring return.

Judging by the reaction to his GMB interview though, fans are less concerned about his physical shape and more about his mental preparedness to fight again.
Tyson – who recently claimed he smokes £33,000 worth of cannabis a month – famously struggled with drug and drink addiction throughout his career.
He said he took cocaine and marijuana just moments before his June 2000 fight against Lou Savarese.
Tyson also wrote in his book ‘Undisputed Truth’ he was a ‘full-blown cokehead’ and even used a fake penis to fool drug testers. More

Watch Mike Tyson slap UFC boss Dana White, kick him out of seat on private jet and write ‘d***’ on his head in prank

UFC president Dana White felt the wrath of Mike Tyson when the heavyweight legend pranked the promoter by slapping him and kicking him out of his seat on a private jet.
In a throwback clip, Tyson – who at 54 is preparing for his comeback fight against Roy Jones Jr – walks up to White and says, ‘hey, come on, move it’ after slapping his pal on the shoulder.

The UFC boss replies: “I like this seat.”
But Tyson sharply responds: “I like it better.” He then moves into the seat and adds: “Ah, this is nice.”
White, looking a little shocked, shrugs his shoulders as he takes up a seat next to the two-time world champion.
But Tyson – who recently left fans concerned for his health with a bizarre appearance on Good Morning Britain – was not done with having fun at White’s expense.

The iconic puncher then wrote ‘D***’ in capital letters on the American millionaire’s forehead as he fell asleep on the jet.
Despite the pranks, Tyson – who once refereed an MMA match in Manchester 14 years ago – has actually formed a close friendship with White.
White – who grew up in boxing before managing UFC fighters and eventually transitioning into promoting – has invited Tyson octagon side for some of the company’s biggest fights.
And Iron Mike, who walked away from boxing in 2005,  admitted in 2012 that, had MMA been as prominent then as it is today, then he may have chosen the cage over the ring.

Five opponents Tyson Fury could fight next in December as Anthony Joshua tune-up including Lucas Browne who wants clash

TYSON FURY needs a December dance partner if he has indeed ditched Deontay Wilder.
The Gypsy King has grown tired of waiting for his 6ft 7in American opponent to name a date and location for their trilogy fight and wants to move on with his career – quickly.

    5

Tyson Fury needs a December opponent worthy of selling a pay-per-view boutCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The undefeated WBC king will now enjoy a homecoming UK show in December – to navigate around the Covid-related travel restrictions – before hopefully leaping into the undisputed decider with Anthony Joshua.
So the 32-year-old’s next opponent must be a big enough name to help sell a pay-per-view, very close to wallet-crippling Crimbo.
But not really dangerous enough to beat or cut the showman a few months out from potentially the biggest fight in British boxing history.
Eddie Hearn and Sky Sports are already selling Derek Chisora vs Olexandr Usyk (Oct 31), Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin 2 (Nov 21) and AJ vs Kubrat Pulev (Dec 12) on PPV.

So cash-strapped fans are going to take some convincing to buy Fury’s first UK bout since 2018, if the opponent isn’t up to scratch.
Here SunSport considers five names – some perfect picks, some dreaded journeymen and some wild long shots – who could meet the fight criteria.
    1. Lucas Browne – Australia – 29-2

    5

Aussie Lucas Browne has previously lost to British fightersCredit: Getty Images – Getty
The Australian veteran is a former WBA world champion, speaks the lingo and would have no problem playing the pantomime villain to drive up interest.
British fans will also recognise ‘Big Daddy’ from his two career defeats, both in London against Dave Allen and Dillian Whyte and caused by magnificent punches.

The freelance fight also has no exclusive promotional ties in the UK so would be an easy coup.
Browne has revealed it would be an ‘honour’ to face Fury, as he said: “Wouldn’t it be awesome for me to knock him out and have all these fans hate me at the same time. That’s something I’d love to happen.
“As I said, it would be an absolute honour to share the ring with him, I would be going in there to knock him out, that would be the plan.
“I could be losing 11 rounds and still knock you out with one punch in the 12th and that’s why I am always going to be dangerous no matter what.”

    2. David Price – England – 25-7

    5

David Price has history with the Gypsy KingCredit: PA:Press Association
There is already a brilliant backstory between Fury and the giant scouser.
Price beat Fury in a 2006 amateur bout and went on to take the Team GB super-heavyweight spot at the 2008 Olympics, ahead of Fury.
Then the Morecambe hero produced one of the funniest call-out clips in the history of British boxing when he offered the “big stiff idiot plumber” a pro straightener.
    [embedded content]
Price’s pro career has been a painful disappointment but his right hand remains a dangerous equaliser.
But his infamous glass chin could also help Fury score a sensational KO.
The 37-year-old has boxed on Eddie Hearn’s Sky Sports shows in recent years so negotiations might be tricky.
But it is definitely a long-overdue clash that would hit the mainstream and warrant a PPV fee.
    3. Carlos Takam – France – 39-5-1

    5

Carlos Takam could jump in the ring with Fury before ChristmasCredit: PA:Press Association
The Cameroon-born Frenchman has a few factors in his favour.
From a business angle he shares US promoters Top Rank with Fury, so the deal is done in-house.
In the ring, fans will remember the Las Vegas-based slugger giving AJ a torrid night in Cardiff in 2017 when Takam was harshly stopped on his feet in the 10th.
And he lost a barnstormer with Derek Chisora in 2018 to further enhance his reputation as a headline attraction.
There could be a worry that rough’n’tough Takam could be too high-risk, especially considering the 42-stitch wound Fury suffered in the supposedly easy bout with Otto Wallin in 2019.
At 39, the hardnut is approaching the end of his career and is unlikely to land another world title shot.
So he could be convinced to take a payday against his stablemate and promise to take his pressure style down a couple of notches.
    4. Razvan Cojanu – Romania – 17-7

    5

Razvan Cojanu lost to Fury’s stablemate Daniel DuboisCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
If the first three whetted your appetite then prepare to sling your dinner in the bin with option No4.
This Romanian heavyweight’s stock shot up after he went 12 rounds against then-world champ Joseph Parker but the 2017 stinker was little more than a sparring match and he lost three on the bounce immediately after.
Two of those defeats, however, are the reason Cojanu remains an option.
Frank Warren and BT fed the 6ft 7in clogger to prospects Daniel Dubois and Nathan Gorman so there is a relationship already in place.
But even a stacked undercard and post-fight singalong from Fury would struggle to make this worth a …. watch.
    5. Dempsey McKean – Australia – 18-0

You’ve probably never heard of the 6ft 6in southpaw but before Fury cherrypicked Wallin and Tom Schwarz from obscurity last year they were also relative unknowns.
Schwarz was 24-0 and highly ranked by the WBO, while Wallin was 20-0 and respected by the WBA and both made Fury look good in the ring.
McKean shares a few similarities, as the unbeaten No1 heavyweight from Down Under with a couple of obscure WBO titles and a sizeable frame to lure in fence-sitters.
Fury’s die-hard fans would watch him box up a birthday present and, with the right sales patter, some floating voters might buy in to a bout like this.
But this would be another one that boxing purists would turn their noses up, especially after having it bloodied by the three other heavyweight PPVs on the calendar.

Greatest nicknames in boxing including ‘Macho’ Camacho, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and Owen ‘What the Heck’ Beck

THE sport of boxing is littered with fighting nicknames, from the majestic to the bizarre.
Some of the greatest boxers are best known by their nicknames, from “Smokin” Joe Frazier to “Iron” Mike Tyson.

There are also plenty of lesser-known fighters who are punching above their weight with standout nicknames.
Here’s a list of some of the greatest names in the sport.
    Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao
Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is the first man in boxing to win world championships in eight different weight classes and has held four recognized world titles in those divisions.
He was voted the Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring Magazine on three separate occasions.

“Pacman” beat and fought the biggest names of his generation, including Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather.
Pacquiao’s unprecedented run turned him into an international star and a hero in his home country of the Philippines.
    Samuel ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Peter
Known for his punching power and holding a 78.9 percent knockout-to-win ratio, Samuel Peter was known as “The Nigerian Nightmare” for a reason.
The slugger burst on the heavyweight scene at a time when the division desperately needed some new blood.

In 2005, he lost a unanimous decision to future heavyweight champion Wladimir’s Kitschoko despite the Ukrainian being dropped three times.
The duo had a rematch three years later, but this time Peter lost decisively by knockout in the 10th-round.
“The Nigerian Nightmare” would finally capture the WBC heavyweight title in 2008, when he defeated Oleg Maskaev.
    ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson
“Iron” Mike Tyson entered the heavyweight division in the mid-1980s, boasting devastating power, speed and ferocity that intimidated many of his opponents.
In 1986, Tyson was crowned the WBC heavyweight champion after he defeated the champ Trevor Berbik by TKO.

    16

At the age of 20, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history, and became the first heavyweight fighter to unify the IBF, WBA and WBC titles.
With all his accolades, Tyson was dubbed the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” capping off his career with 44 knockout wins.
‘The Explosive Thin Man’ Alexis Arguello
Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello was one of the most devastating punchers in boxing, earning him the nickname “The Explosive Thin Man.”
Arguello was a three-time world champion and is one of the few fighters to have never lost his titles in the ring.

All of his championships were forfeited when he moved to a higher weight class to pursue a new challenge.
He went on to compete in five weight classes during a successful career: bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.
    Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns
When it comes to great boxing nicknames look no further than Thomas Hearns.
Whether it’s the well-known “Hitman” or the “Motor City Cobra,” there is little doubt Hearns earned both.
He was one of the most feared boxers of his generation and fought all the greats of his era.

    16

“The Hitman” won world championships in five weight classes, from welterweight all the way up to light heavyweight.
He stepped into the ring with greats such as Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Haler.
His two fights against Sugar Ray are considered to be among the greatest in boxing history, while the opening round against Hagler in 1985 is arguably the most brutal ever witnessed in the sport.
    Michael ‘Second To’ Nunn
Former middleweight champ Michael “Second To” Nunn was a standout amateur boxer before turning professional.
He won world titles at middleweight and super middleweight, and had a few showdowns at light heavyweight.
Nunn was a slick 6’2 southpaw who packed a heavy punch.

He was a force in the middleweight division in the mid-1980s and into the 90s.
In 1988, he dominated Frank Tate to win his first IBF middleweight title.
In 2004, after retiring from the sport, he was sentenced to 24 years on drug trafficking charges.
‘The Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya
There are few fighters who have hit the heights like Oscar De La Hoya.
“The Golden Boy” is regarded as the man who put boxing “back on its feet” when he cracked the scene in the early 1990s – and continued to change the sport after his retirement through his Golden Boy Promotions company.

De La Hoya won Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, which earned him his famous nickname.
Throughout his illustrious career, De La Hoya defeated 17 world champions, won 10 world titles in six weight classes and became the highest grossing fighter in history.
    Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho
Hector “Macho” Camacho was known in the ring for his quickness, bizarre dress and flamboyant style.
“Macho” competed in seven weight classes from super featherweight all the way up to super middleweight.

The Puerto Rican won his first world title by way of a fifth-round knockout over former champ Rafael Limon in 1983.
During the late 1980s and early 90s, Camacho had notable fights against Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Jose Luis Ramirez and an over faded Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard.
“Macho” died in 2012 after he was shot while sitting in a car outside a bar in his native Bayamon.
    Owen ‘What the Heck’ Beck
During the mid-2000s, Owen Beck was a solid fighter in the heavyweight division, although never one of the greats.
Every time he stepped into the ring against a decent opponent Beck tended to lose.

He challenged for the world title once in his career, which ended in a fifth-round knockout loss to Nikolai Valuev in 2006.
Towards the end of his career – having lost his last eight fights – Beck became more of a journeyman.
Still, there’s no doubting the greatest of his nickname: Owen “What the Heck” Beck.
    ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler
“Marvelous” Marvin Hagler became the dominant force in the middleweight division in the early 1970s.
He reached the pinnacle of the division in 1980 when he was crowned the WBA, WBC and The Ring middleweight champion after his win against Alan Minter.
Hagler consistently ranks among the top five middleweights of all time – and is remembered for a highly controversial decision loss to “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987.

The fight was close with both boxers landing an equal number of shots, but Hagler was the more aggressive.
The split-decision verdict for Leonard remains highly debated, with many calling the victory for Hagler.
    ‘Manos De Piedra’ Roberto Duran
Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran is one of the most iconic nicknames in all of sport, attached to a man widely considered the greatest lightweight to ever step foot in the ring.
Duran won world titles in four weight classes: lightweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight.

A brawler in the ring, Duran’s most notable performances came against Sugar Ray Leonard, who he spectacularly defeated in a 15-round decision at “the Brawl in Montreal” in 1980.
The rematch later that year became the infamous “No Mas” moment when Duran inexplicably quit in the eighth round of a very close fight.
    Mike ‘The Bodysnatcher’ McCallum
Mike “The Bodysnatcher” McCallum dominated the light middleweight division during the mid-1980s.
McCallum earned his nickname due to his ability to land vicious body punches.

He won the junior middleweight title in 1984 and successfully defended his belt seven times before moving to middleweight.
His first crack at the middleweight championship was unsuccessful, but he would eventually be crowned champion in 1990.
A slick and hard-hitting McCallum secured his third world title in a third weight class after winning the WBC light heavyweight championship.
    ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier
“Smokin” Joe Frazier was both an Olympic gold medalist and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
During his legendary career he defeated many of the top heavyweights, including Jerry Quarry, Buster Mathis, Eddie Machen and Jimmy Ellis.

His most famous victory came in 1971, when he was the first boxer to defeat Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden by a clear-cut unanimous decision.
Dubbed “The Fight of the Century,” Frazier sent Ali to the hospital with a broken jaw.
“Smoking” Joe would lose his titles two years later to the knockout artist George Foreman.
    ‘The Brown Bomber’ Joe Louis
Known as “The Brown Bomber,” Joe Louis is considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, even better than Muhammad Ali.
Louis held the world heavyweight championship for a record 140 months – nearly 12 years.
During his reign, he made a record 25 successful title defenses.

Coming to the fore in the early 1930s, Louis packed devastating punching power and is credited with becoming one of the the first African-American cultural icons in the United States.
    ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali
“The Greatest” Muhammad Ali was simply one of the best fighters to ever set foot in a boxing ring.
He was a fighter, an icon and a symbol of the anti-war movement that seized the nation in the late 1960s.
In 1967, Ali, who had been the world champion for three years, refused the draft for the Vietnam War and was stripped of both titles and his boxing license.

Lucas Browne ‘more than willing’ to welcome Tyson Fury back to UK in December with Deontay Wilder trilogy facing the axe

LUCAS BROWNE is ‘more than willing’ to welcome Tyson Fury back to the UK in December with the Deontay Wilder trilogy facing the axe.
Fury has grown tired of waiting for a date to face Wilder for a third time, and has announced his intention to move on.

With UK promoter Frank Warren under instructions to find the WBC champion an opponent for the end of the year, Browne has thrown his hat into the ring.
He said on Twitter: “Wake up this morning to the awesome news that Tyson Fury is possibly looking at myself as the number one candidate for a fight in December.
“The Fury and Wilder fight is no longer happening and he wants some kind of warm up fight for the Joshua fight.
“Now, if that is me, I’d be more than willing to jump in, it would be an absolute honour to jump in the ring with the Gypsy King, who I believe is one of the best heavyweights on the planet at the moment.

“In saying that, wouldn’t it be awesome for me to knock him out and have all these fans hate me at the same time.

Browne, 41, continued: “Tyson Fury, thank you very much for the consideration, I do hope it comes off.

“I am training and waiting for a fight. Covid has obviously put a stop to a lot of things at the moment and hopefully this could be something that really changes my life as well.”
The humble call out follows news Fury, 32, is set to snub a trilogy bout against Wilder, 34, having dethroned the American in February, having drawn in December 2018.
They had been set to fight once more before the year’s out, but with the coronavirus pandemic preventing live crowds, it has so far failed to materialise.
Wilder did enact his right to a contractual rematch, but the delay may force the stipulation to expire.

    2

Fury has already agreed a two-fight deal with unified champion Anthony Joshua, 30, who faces Kubrat Pulev, 39, in December.
The Gypsy King wants a homecoming tune-up the same month before focussing his plans on an undisputed title decider with AJ.
But, SunSport understands neither Fury nor Wilder has informed the WBC of any plans to cancel their third showdown.
Fury and WBC boss Maurico Sulaiman appear to have a close friendship, following emotional encounters in the ring after each Wilder clash.
Wilder’s co-promoter Al Haymon also appears to have a close working relationship with the organisation, with a number of his high-profile talents holding their honours.
