Errol Spence Jr desperate to face Manny Pacquiao but says ‘living legend’ has earned right to pick Conor McGregor fight

ERROL SPENCE JR is desperate to face Manny Pacquiao before the ‘living legend’ retires.
But the unified welterweight champion admits the Filipino icon has ‘earned’ the right to fight UFC star Conor McGregor instead.

Spence, who returns to the ring on December 5 against Danny Garcia, is already targeting a unification with Pacquiao.
He told SunSport: “After this fight, of course I would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. He’s on his way out so I’d love to have that fight.
“He’s a living legend, and I’ve never fought someone of that calibre. He’s big and not just a boxing star, he’s an icon, a mega-star.
“That would be different and it would send me somewhere else popularity-wise.

“Pacquiao has been in the sport 20-something years, he’s an icon even outside the sport. Everybody knows who Manny Pacquiao is.
“That would be a great fight for me.”
WBC and IBF title holder Spence, 30, has long called to share the ring with eight-division champion Pacquiao, 41,
But the unbeaten Texan could be beaten to the punch by McGregor, who lost his boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather, 43, in 2017.

With Pacquiao already holding talks to face the Irishman, Spence’s dream fight has been dealt a blow.
But the American holds no ill-will towards the veteran, as PacMan’s years of taking on all comers at all weights justifies a lucrative payday against McGregor.
Spence said: “I don’t blame him, Manny Pacquiao earned that right.
“He’s earned his right to make his money and fight whoever he wants to fight, because he fought whoever was lined up to fight him.
“I’m not mad at it at all, if I was 40-something and was offered that kind of money to fight Conor McGregor, I’d take the fight too, I don’t blame him.”
McGregor had announced his next fight would be against Pacquiao, but now appears to have committed himself to the UFC.

McGregor has been training ahead of his UFC comeback
It comes as the 32-year-old accepted a rematch against Dustin Poirier – who he beat in 2014 – on January 23 and hopes to fight in Spence’s home of Texas.
But then he will focus his efforts on a return to boxing.
McGregor tweeted: “I accept, Jan 23rd is on! My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium. Proper Style!
“Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans! Then Manny.”
The UFC is yet to headline at the Dallas Cowboys 80,000-capacity home.
But over 47,000 fans filled into the AT&T Stadium in March 2019 to watch Spence dominate 32-year-old Mikey Garcia.

His next fight, which comes a year after the boxer was hospitalised following a horror car crash, has been moved to accommodate a limited crowd.
Spence will now defend his titles against two-weight champ Garcia, 32, back at the Cowboy’s stadium, and has a point to prove to his home supporters.
He explained: “I fought at the Cowboys stadium before, but to be fighting again, especially after my accident, this is a great homecoming.
“I’m very excited, because I know people are watching me closely thinking I won’t be the same Errol Spence as I have been.
“I’m just focussed to prove everybody wrong and go out there and be victorious.”

Geordie hero Joe Laws wants show at beloved Newcastle’s St James’ Park after meeting Everton icon Tony Bellew

GEORDIE star Joe Laws fancies his chances of fighting at St James’ Park after meeting hero and nickname-inspiration Tony Bellew.
The 26-year-old leaped from local legend to social media sensation last year when he got a packed Newcastle Arena singing after just an undercard four-rounder.

    1

The Benwell Bomber has charmed boxing fans with his cheeky Twitter posts and the hilarious story of sparring Floyd Mayweather-protege Devin Haney in Las Vegas, while battling a blinding hangover.
But he is deadly serious about his career – having taken a dangerous behind-closed-doors bout when he usually sells 1,000 tickets – and the target of hosting a talent-packed card at the Toon stadium.
And a shock meeting with Everton nut Bellew – who won the WBC cruiserweight crown on an iconinc 2016 Goodison Park night – has added fuel to that burning desire.
Ahead of his clash with Rylan Charlton, on fellow Geordie Lewis Ritson’s undercard, Laws told SunSport: “If Lewis keeps winning, I keep winning, Tommy Ward, Savannah Marshall, Dave Allen and Josh Kelly – all from the North East – keep winning then we could sell out St James’.

“It would be an incredible night that people would never forget.
“I was only training on Thursday morning when Tony Bellew walked in. It was so mint because I love him, he’s the original ‘Bomber’ and he walked up and shook my hand.
“He got that amazing night at Goodison Park and showed that it could be done so why not aim high?”
Boxing rivals and purists might not like the 9-0 character grabbing so much attention but Laws knows you need more than technical ability to break up the order.

Watch Canelo Alvarez spar with hulking heavyweight who throws huge hooks at Mexican star during training for return

CANELO ALVAREZ looks a cut above – as he takes on a towering heavyweight in training.
The Mexican super-middleweight sensation, 30, was shown a huge hook from 28-year-old Cuban brawler Frank Sanchez.

    3

Canelo was nearly clocked with a monster hook during the sparring session

    3

There was a huge size difference between the two men

    3

The Mexican came back with a quick combo of his own

But Alvarez – who recently revealed his shredded six pack – dodged it just in time during their sparring session.
The gulf in size between the two boxers was clear to see, with 5ft 9in Alvarez totally dwarfed by 6ft 4in Sanchez.
But the WBA champ came back with a sharp right-left of his own in the match up that looked a little like David Haye’s memorable win over gargantuan Nikolai Valuev in 2009.
Canelo is keeping fit but it is unclear when he will next fight.

It emerged just last month that Canelo had filed a lawsuit against his broadcaster Dazn and promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
Canelo signed an 11-fight £280million contract in 2018 – lauded as the richest in sport – but alleges a breach of contract just three fights in.
It was alleged that Dazn attempted to cut the cash guarantee he had for fights because they were not happy with the level of his opponents.
The deal said Canelo had to fight a ‘premium’ opponent at least once a year, but that there was confusion over what constituted a ‘premium’ fighter.

Tyson Fury, Billy Joe Saunders, Luke Campbell and Errol Spence vs Danny Garcia to lead boxing day bonanza on 5 December

BOXING fans have waited long enough for a mega fight to sink their teeth into – and December 5 promises to deliver FOUR huge contests.
Tyson Fury, Billy Joe Saunders, Luke Campbell and Errol Spence Jr all have their eye on the date for their return to action.

After vowing not to fight Deontay Wilder for a third time, Fury is set to hold his first fight on British shores in over two years in December.
Oscar Rivas, Efe Ajagba and Agit Kabayel are all in line for a shot at the WBC champion, who is planning a unification battle with Anthony Joshua in 2021.
Whether fans can attend the homecoming of the Gypsy King, 32, tipped for the Royal Albert Hall, remains to be seen.
But the match-up promises to be a fresh showcase of Fury at the top of his powers.

Down in the lightweight division, the WBC interim title is up for grabs when Luke Campbell faces Ryan Garcia.
American prospect Garcia, 22, faces the Hull brawler, 33, in the States attempting to extend his 20-0 record.

Campbell told Sky Sports ahead of the meeting: “He’s the one that’s there to win, because he’s the up and coming guy, but I’m excited by this opportunity to show the world what I’m really capable of doing.”

A third Brit could be in action on that night, with Billy Joe Saunders being lined up for his first fight in over a year.
Martin Murray and Rocky Fielding are reportedly in contention to face the 31-year-old as he looks to bounce back from a suspension for making a sick domestic violence joke in March.

Vasyl Lomachenko uses maths puzzles, folk dancing and holding his breath in training for Lopez fight

VASYL Lomachenko isn’t your average boxer.
The Ukrainian three-weight world champ, 32, is rated as the one of the best pound-for-pound fighters around.

    19

This weekend, Loma goes head-to-head with Teofimo Lopez in a lightweight bout in Las Vegas.
And you can be sure the favourite might’ve prepared for the fight in the most unique way.
The southpaw, who boasted an incredible 396 amateur wins before he went pro also, uses maths puzzles, folk-dancing, and holding his breath underwater to defeat his opponents.
    TINY DANCER
Despite showing a promise for boxing from the age of four Lomachenko’s father Anatoly was adamant that his son should start dance classes.

For four years he honed his footwork skills performing traditional Ukrainian folk dancing called Hopak, where dancers wear baggy pantaloons and bright coloured boots.
It was a ploy by his dad, part martial arts sensei part Buddha, to help Loma improve his footwork, as he later understood.
“I didn’t understand at that time,” Vasyl told Sports Illustrated.
“He didn’t pay attention to my hands. He didn’t pay attention to my defense. First, he was paying attention to my footwork.”

Years later, Lomachenko was back in the boxing gym and working with pads – improving his hand speed and punching power.

    HOPAK DANCING

THE Hopak is a Ukrainian folk dance that dates all the way back to the 16th century

Originally, a male dance created by the Zaporozhian Cossacks, it is now performed in countries including Belarus, Russia and Poland.
The name is derived from the word ‘hopaty’ which means hop.
A typical movement of the dance is leaping through the air and touching your toes.
While performers are also known to squat while balancing on one leg.
The traditional costume worn by the dancers consists of pantaloons and colourful boots.
Famously, former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin forced his eventual successor Nikita Khrushchev to perform the Hopak to see his dance credentials.

    UNUSUAL TRAINING METHODS
Lomachenko, who has a 14-1 professional record, chooses unorthodox training measures to beat his foes.
Before he defeated Luke Campbell at The O2 Arena last year by unanimous decision he was particularly interested exercising his mind.
He would complete complex maths equations and word puzzles to strengthen his thought process.
To improve his physical attributes, he raced against his pet German Shepherd on the beach, would punch a tennis ball tied to a baseball cap, and held his breath underwater for four minutes.
Again, to sharpen hand-to-eye coordination skills he also juggles.

    AMATEUR KING
As an amateur, Lomachenko got plenty of practice in.
Astonishingly, he won 396 of his 397 fights – making him one of the most prolific amateur fighters of all time.
That one blemish on his record – was a defeat to Albert Selimov.
However, Loma managed to avenge the defeat twice to reign supreme.
This led to his progression to Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships.
And success followed – winning gold at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012 – two golds at the World Championship, and another further two at the Europeans.

Swimming, including holding his breath under water for about four minutes is another Lomachenko’s training methods
HE LOST TO AN UBER DRIVER
Despite appearing (almost) unbeatable, Lomachenko does have that one defeat against his name… and it was to an Uber driver!
In 2014, he fought against Orlando Salido for the vacant WBO Featherwight title.
The Mexican went into the fight having already lost 12 times.
To compliment his boxing, Salido would take Uber fares on the side for some extra cash.
He is probably the most intimidating Uber driver ever.

    PASTIMES
When boxing takes a backseat, Lomachenko is at ease on the lakes.
His favourite hobby is fishing and he regularly shares images on Instagram of some of his catches.

Anthony Joshua fighting to get fans back into arena for his December 12 heavyweight showdown with Kubrat Pulev

ANTHONY JOSHUA is still fighting to have a few fans at ringside for his December 12 clash with Kubrat Pulev.
The 31-year-old is set to officially confirm the mandatory defence of his three heavyweight world titles will happen at London’s O2, a fortnight before Christmas, on Friday night.

    2

And his team are still busy working behind the scenes to see if the 2012 Olympic icon can have a small section of his supporters witness his homecoming after more than two years away.
The Government has allowed ballet and theatre fans back inside venues but the DCMS are yet to confirm if even a small percentage will be allowed in the 18,000 capacity arena to support the British hero.
AJ has been training like a trojan at his favourite Finchley gym in North London, after the Andy Ruiz Jr double that started terribly in New York and ended successfully in Saudi Arabia on December 7.
A packed Wembley or Principality stadium in Wales is worth around £5m in ticket sales to Josh but – after exploring bizarre and exotic alternatives – promoters Matchroom settled on a more familiar spot.

COO Frank Smith said: “Fair play to everyone for taking these opportunities now, it was tough but we needed to get AJ boxing, a year out was long enough.
“I had a few calls about a Croatian amphitheatre and an off-shore super-yacht, that could have supposedly hosted, it but they were longshot dreams I didn’t really believe.”
Tyson Fury’s promoter Bob Arum insists that if AJ comes through the 39-year-old Bulgarian – and the Gypsy King wins his December 5 tune-up unscathed – that the all-English undisputed decider can be made inside just five hours.
But Smith, thrust reluctantly in front of the camera at Matchroom’s Peterborough show this weekend while Hearn recovers from Coronavirus, admits it can only run smoothly if everyone remains sensible.

“These fights usually take weeks and weeks to make because there are so many intricate things that go into them, that not many people understand or ever need to, because they just want to watch the fight.
“If everyone is sensible then we can make it quite quickly, because it is the biggest fight out there and it has to happen. But let’s see what happens.”

The network reported that, when asked in a press conference what aspects Joshua is superior to him, Pulev replied: “His strengths? I’d say he has a very powerful punch undeniably.
“What are his other strengths? His tan is better than mine.”
Team AJ are aware of the story but declined to comment and SunSport did appeal to Pulev’s manager for clarity but have not yet received a response.

Thomas Hearns reveals his five-step formula to beating Floyd Mayweather including focus on jabbing and avoid body shots

BOXING legend Thomas Hearns has revealed a five-step formula he believes would be enough to beat fellow great Floyd Mayweather.
And it could be music to the ears of Logan Paul, with the YouTuber believed to be in line to fight Mayweather in an exhibition fight in the near future.

Mayweather retired from boxing with an unblemished 50-fight record.
His last victory came when he silenced UFC star Conor McGregor with a tenth-round stoppage win in 2017.
Another money-spinner is in the pipeline to fight social media sensation Paul.
In an interview with The Ring Magazine as reported by World Boxing News, Hearns ran through five tactics he would have employed that he thinks would have seen him beat Mayweather.

Unfortunately their two paths never crossed – Hearns was up at cruiserweight and beyond as Mayweather was making a name for himself at feather mid-to-late 1990s.
The 61-year-old believes the five key ingredients would be:
    out-think,
    out-jab,
force him to keep on moving his head,
    unleash with the right hand
    avoid body shots.
The five-weight world champion known as ‘Hitman’ explained: “Against me, I would have to respect him.
“I think that he could go the distance with me. I would have to out-think him and definitely out-jab him. He’s a shorter man. So he can’t get to me.

“I would have to keep the jab on him and keep him at a distance. Force him to use his head movement all of the time. Somewhere down the line, I would probably hit him with a couple of right hands.
“I would probably get him with a good right hand if not an average right hand. If I was to go to the body, you know that might play into what he is probably trying to do strategically.
“I think that if I got closer to him trying to land a body shot, that would be what he wants. So I think that my best thing would be to stay on the outside and box him.
“But I think that he could go the distance with me.”
Hearns seemingly retired from boxing in 2000 after retiring against Uriah Grant.
But he made a stunning comeback in 2005, winning two fights before going out on a win.
He was part of the ‘Fab Four’ era of the 1980s alongside Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard at welterweight and super-welter.

Tommy Fury reveals dad John is scarier than Tyson and warns Anthony Joshua it will be ‘game over’ when he fights brother

TOMMY FURY says his dad John is scarier than brother and WBC heavyweight boxing king Tyson.

Tommy is trying to make his own waves in the sport after becoming a household name for his time topping up his tan on reality TV.
The 21-year-old has won all three of his pro fights so far, two by way of KO.
If he can adopt the same ‘take no prisoners’ attitude older brother and dad have, Tommy hopes one day to become a world champ himself.
When asked who was scarier between John and Tyson, Tommy told The Sportsman: “I wouldn’t like to be stuck in a lift with my dad. Definitely not.

“There is just something about him, when he loses his temper that is it, you just say ‘Oh no problem, I’ll speak to you another day.’ Get out the firing line.”
Tyson announced a the start of coronavirus lockdown that he had agreed with WBA, WBO and IBF champ Joshua for the pair to fight twice in 2021.
And unsurprisingly Tommy is tipping big bro to do what he does best and win the Battle Of Britain.
He added: “I think it will happen, definitely because it is too big of a fight not to happen. I think it should definitely be on for summer time or back end of the year next year to be fair.

“Tyson is ready all year round. He’s never shied away from anybody his entire life so whenever Joshua steps up and wants to take the fight, then Tyson will be here waiting.
“I truly believe Joshua knows this in his own head. When he fights Tyson it will be game over for him.”
Tyson is now busy trying to sort a fight before the end of the year, with the Deontay Wilder trilogy shelved for 2021.
But his promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum are desperate to get the WBC heavyweight champ back out before 2020 is done.

Arum has compiled a five-man shortlist for Fury, and one of the names on the list is desperate for his chance to shock the world.
Michael Hunter says he would fight the Gypsy King FOR FREE, but feels another ‘softer’ opponent will be cherry-picked.
SunSport has also compiled a list of five potential opponents for the Lineal champ – some would whet the appetite, others would raise a few eyebrows.
