Floyd Mayweather reveals his ā€˜ultimate goal’ is to get protege Gervonta Davis to surpass his legendary 50-0 career

FLOYD MAYWEATHER revealed his “ultimate goal” is to get protege Gervonta Davis to surpass his incredible 50-0 career.
The American legend retired in 2017 after beating UFC star Conor McGregor, and despite teasing a comeback, has focussed his efforts on promoting.

    2

Gervonta Davis with promoter Floyd Mayweather

Super-featherweight champion Davis, signed to Mayweather Promotions, is one of the 43-year-old’s biggest stars.
And he has such high hopes for his unbeaten fighter, he wants to see Davis go on to better his own legacy.
Mayweather told Showtime: “Before I was a fighter/promoter. Now, it’s just all promoting.
“This young man right here, a natural born superstar. I would say I’m the god of this s***, I’m the don of this s***, I’m the LeBron of this s***.

“But the ultimate goal is to get him to surpass me.”
Davis has not fought since beating Yuriorkis Gamboa in December to win the WBA ‘Regular’ lightweight belt.
He moves back down to super-featherweight on his return to the ring, against Leo Santa Cruz on October 31.
It was initially set for October 24 behind closed doors, but moved a week to accommodate a limited 11,500 fansĀ at San Antonio’s Alamodome stadium.

Well, the night has come to an end and it’s getting dangerously light outside – which means one thing – my bed is calling.
But before that, just a final goodbye to everyone who followed along with SunSport’s coverage.
Tonight was Teofimo’s night! He ousted a man who nobody thought could be ousted, and he leaves Las Vegas with four belts, as the sport’s youngest ever undisputed world champion.
A fantastic achievement. Loma will think over his next steps, but he’s been an incredible champions to feast our eyes on over the past six years.
This is his 3rd ever loss in 413 fights, amateur and pro. Let that sink in.
Lopez was just better, stronger, hungrier and younger. He proved himself to be a true champion.

Boxing judge to be investigated after footage appears to show him using PHONE during Ritson vs Vazquez title fight

BOXING judge Terry O’Connor is to be investigated by the board of control after he appeared to be on his phone during the Lewis Ritson versus Miguel Vazquez fight.
And promoter Eddie Hearn has called for the official to be ‘removed’ if the claims are found to be true.

A photo was circulated on social media that appears to show the 67-year-old looking at a mobile as he is seated ringside.
Matchroom boss Hearn, who promoted the show in question that saw Ritson secure a controversial points win, called for action.
Hearn shared the photo on Twitter, writing: “If that’s a phone (and I presume it is) then then BBBofC should immediately remove him.”

And WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman also retweeted the snap, writing: “This image is extremely troubling to any person involved in boxing”.

Now British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith has promised to investigate the matter.
He told Boxing News: “I’m very, very disappointed. This has to be looked at and investigated as it will be.
“I am so frustrated that this seems to have happened. After the hard work we do behind the scenes we have something like this emerging.
“Personally I am so disappointed. I can’t say anything more on this at this point.”

In terms of the bout he was judging, O’Connor awarded it to home fighter Ritson, 117-111.
This was despite Sky Sports commentators, pundits and even Hearn himself believing Vazquez had comfortably done enough to win the fight.
Fellow judge Michael Alexander also scored it to Ritson, 115-113 with Marcus McDonnell handing it to the Mexican, 116-113.
Smith added that the ‘fight will be looked at’ as he ‘can completely understand why people felt Vazquez had won’.
The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed to SunSport they would be looking into the incident.
It’s not the first-time O’Connor has been caught up in controversy.
He was one of three judges who gave Callum Smith a wide-points win against John Ryder in November last year.
Many thought Ryder had shocked the champ into his first ever loss. O’Connor gave that fight 117-111 too.
The Birmingham judge was also slammed by promoter Mick Hennessey in 2017 when he gave Joseph Parker a 118-110 decision against Hughie Fury.
Hennessey said that O’Connor had ‘buckled under pressure’. More

Lomachenko landed more punches in round 11 than in first SIX rounds as haywire fight stats show why he lost to Lopez

VASYL LOMACHENKO landed more punches in round 11 of his defeat to Teofimo Lopez than he did in the first SIX rounds of the fight.
The punch stats tell the story of what turned into a miserable night for the man many considered to be the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet.

Lomachenko looked sluggish and unwilling to engage in the first six rounds of the undisputed lightweight clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
During these 18 minutes the 32-year-old Ukrainian landed just 25 punches of the 56 he threw.
In comparison Lopez, who ended up handing Loma his second ever defeat, landed 53 of the 239 he launched.
The only thing Loma bettered his opponent at was percentage of successful punches landed.

In round 11 Lomachenko threw 29 punches – more than the entire first six combined.
It shows how the Ukrainian finally stepped things up in the so-called ‘championship rounds’ – but it was too little too late.
It was Lopez who finished off the fight with a flurry in the 12th, landing an impressive 50 punches compared to Loma’s 19.

After the one-sided beatdown, Lomachenko bizarrely claimed he thought he did enough to beat Lopez despite being outclassed by the American.

Judges scored the bout 116-112, 119-109 and 117-111 in favour of the 23-year-old who added the WBA, WBO and WBC ‘franchise’ belts to his IBF strap.
After hearing the news his 13-fight winning streak had come to an end, the Ukrainian great stormed out of the ring in anger and frustration.
And he has stated that he feels his hand should have been raised in victory as he felt he dominated that last six rounds.

Mayweather wins $20k on Lopez beating Lomachenko and brands takings ā€˜a light win’ as Money rakes in more cash

FLOYD MAYWEATHER has taken to social media to reveal he won £15,600 ($20,000) after backing Teofimo Lopez to beat Vasyl Lomachenko.
The 43-year-old is no stranger to winning big on bets having pocketed over £70,000 in 2017 after guessing who would win in a college football match.

But the five-weight world champion branded his takings as ‘a light win’ after staking Ā£5,032 ($6,500) on his American compatriot.
Lopez earned a wide points decision against the Ukrainian great at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with judges scoring the bout 116-112, 119-109 and 117-111 in his favour.
And Mayweather uploaded a snap of his bet slip on Instagram showing his stake and his impressive winnings.
Captioning the post, he simply stated: “A light win.”

His 23.9 million followers were quick to comment, as one messaged: “No wonder he won lmao you rigged it.”
Another quipped: “Must be going broke only betting 6.5k.”
A third added: “Man homie not workin (sic) and still made hella thousands lol.”
Despite Lopez dominating Lomachenko, the two-time Olympic gold medallist believes he did enough to win the contest.

Kell Brook vs Terence Crawford for WBO welterweight title CONFIRMED for November 14 with Brit set for £1.6m payday

KELL BROOK’S blockbuster bout to face WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford has been confirmed to take place on November 14.
The Brit star, 34, will have to move back to 147lbs after failing to secure a world title fight at super-welterweight.

Terence Crawford defends his WBO welterweight belt against Kell Brook on November 14

And he knows he will have to inflict a first professional defeat on the 34-year-old American if he wishes to become a two-time world champ.
SunSport reported last month how the two fighters were in talks about a potential dust-up, where Brook would pocket £1.6million.
The contest has now been confirmed, with ex-IBF king Brook stating he isn’t concerned about going into the bout as an underdog.
He said: “I’ve been told there are people writing off my chances, questioning my age, and my ability to make the weight.

“Well, let them talk. Some people focus on reading headlines, I focus on making headlines.
“Those people writing me off as a big underdog? No problem. I guess this big dog will be making a few people richer during a difficult time.
“Terence isn’t too much younger than me.
“They know that I’ve never ducked a challenge, and they should know that I’ve never failed to make 147 on the scales.

Crawford – who has won all of his 36 contests in the paid ranks – has stopped his last seven opponents, which has included the likes of Amir Khan, Jose Benavidez Jr and Julius Indongo.
But his promoter Bob Arum believes that the Special One will be a big test for the Nebraska native.
He said: “Kell Brook is one of the elite fighters in the world. He has faced so many of the top boxers.
ā€œHe is a real test for pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford. This is another premium fight that will be available to boxing fans for no extra charge live on ESPN.ā€
