Boxing judge who appeared to use PHONE during Ritson vs Vazquez fight summoned for crunch talks with BBBofC chiefs

BOXING judge Terry O’Connor will appear before the British Boxing Board of Control to explain his shock scoring of Lewis Ritson’s controversial weekend win.
Over 12 super-lightweight rounds against Mexican underdog Miguel Vazquez on Saturday, the Newcastle banger only seemed to win a couple.

Questions were raised when the judge appeared to be looking at a mobile phoneCredit: Twitter@markstaylor1980

But veteran official O’Connor’s 117-111 scorecard helped the Geordie nick a split decision that stunned the almost-empty Peterborough arena.
Sky Sports’ commentator Matt Macklin and pundit Tony Bellew both felt Vazquez had coasted to a wide points win and even promoter Eddie Hearn admitted the wrong hand was raised.
A Monday statement from the usually hyper-private BBBofC said: “Mr. O’Connor will appear before the Stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control following his appointment to the boxing tournament at the East of England Showground Arena on Saturday, 17th October 2020”.
A freeze frame from round eight of the bout seemed to catch O’Connor checking his mobile phone and sparked worldwide condemnation among the boxing fraternity.

But repeated viewing suggests to SunSport that an unfortunate angle makes O’Connor’s pen – clipped onto his scorecard – appear like a handset.
Hearn demanded drastic action if O’Connor is found guilty of such a serious misdemeanor.

The Matchroom boss tweeted: “If that’s a phone (and I presume it is) then then BBBofC should immediately remove him.”
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman agreed, tweeting: “This image is extremely troubling to any person involved in boxing.”

Fellow judge Michael Alexander also scored it to Ritson, 115-113 with Marcus McDonnell handing it to the Mexican, 116-113.
After the bout, BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith confirmed the body would look into the incident.

Tyson Fury’s incredible six meal a day diet including CURRY which helped body transformation ahead comeback fight

TYSON FURY’S phenomenal body transformation is down to a diet of six meals a day – including a wholesome CURRY.
The WBC champ, 32, lost 10st for his win over Deontay Wilder and will need to be in similar shape for his mouthwatering clash against Anthony Joshua.

Fury got in shape with his diet after snapping up UFC chef and Conor McGregor nutritionist George Lockhart.
And Lockhart even took to Instagram on Monday to reveal he is flying to the UK to help Fury once again.
Along with a picture of his British Airways ticket, he wrote: “Here we go again!!!! #tysonfury #lockhartandleith #cookingforthechamp #ufc #weightcut #takingover”
Naturally-gifted 6ft 9in Fury has always used to appear as though he played fast and loose with the science of the sport.

Friend and camp manager Timothy Allcock was also his personal cook ahead of his first fight against Wilder in December 2018 and peanut butter chicken was on the menu almost every night.
Fighting man Fury showed little interest in the diet fads and micro meals that come in and out of fashion among fighters and celebrities.
But he has handed over the pots and pans to former US marine and MMA fighter Lockhart to get in shape – and stay there.
Lockhart makes salmon cakes with spicy jalapenos, coriander and Greek yogurt dressing for Fury.

The expert cook even managed to make brussel sprouts look appetising in one social media post.
Fury’s tastebuds would have been left tingling by Sriracha honey salmon laid out on a bed of quinoa and Greek rice and skewered chicken with tzatziki sauce was probably a big hit for the fighter.
Team Fury were purring over a dish of strawberry and mango salsa with tomato and cilantro rice and chilli bean shrimp patty.
And the once 28st food lover was allowed to pig out on a stunning pork dish of apple and cranberry stuffed loin with butternut squash, quinoa, walnuts, and spinach and topped with a citrus avocado vinaigrette.
With Fury’s intense training leading to a calorie deficit, he would have been boosted by a meaty serving of dijon maple syrup seared wild salmon with rosemary, garlic, roasted sweet potatoes, and tomato, spinach and bean chilli.
Lockhart even manages to make cauliflower appetising by jazzing it up with hummus patties with cilantro lime shrimp and rice, with macadamia nut, avocado, cilantro, lime sauce.
And Fury might be able to deal with fellow Brit banger Joshua a little easier after scoffing a healthy version of sausages.
The Morecambe man had apple and chicken sausage with sweet potatoes, spinach quinoa, cooked in chicken broth with a side of baked kale chips and avocado.
Even Fury’s favourite, a curry, makes the list, with Lockhart keen to make sure the boxer gets his red meat intake just right.

Tyson Fury predicted Teofimo Lopez shock win over Lomachenko after branding US star a ‘heavyweight on tiny legs’

TYSON FURY predicted Teofimo Lopez would spring a surprise on Vasyl Lomachenko – after branding the US star a ‘heavyweight on tiny legs’.
Lopez, 23, won the IBF title against Richard Commey in December 2019 with an emphatic second-round knockout setting up an undisputed decider against unified champion Lomachenko.

Teofimo Lopez is undisputed lightweight champion – just as Tyson Fury predicted

    2

He then stunned Lomachenko via unanimous points decision in Las Vegas to be crowned undisputed lightweight champion.
Way back in January, heavyweight star Fury predicted the 5ft 8in heavy-hitter would have enough power to work out the unsolved puzzle of Ukrainian southpaw Lomachenko.
The Gypsy King told iFL TV: “Let me tell you; Richard Commey is a very good fighter, and I’m a big fan of him as well.
“Little Teofimo just walked right through him. He’s the biggest little tiny man I’ve seen in my life.

“And he’s the biggest little man I’ve ever seen.
“He’s the biggest heavyweight on the planet, barring nobody, and I’ve got to back what he says.
“There isn’t any 135 or 140-pounder that can beat him.
“No Lomachenkos or nobody, because he’s a heavyweight on two tiny legs with speed and power.”

Lomachenko won the vacant WBC title in August against Brit Luke Campbell to add to his WBA and WBO belts, before losing them all to Lopez.
Earlier this year, the 32-year-old revealed he would go back down in weight in order to fight opponents similar to his frame after his unification with Lopez.
At the time Fury warned the risk of fighting knockout specialist Lopez before dropping back down could cost him greatly.
He said: “He probably hits harder than me as a featherweight. I seem really high on him. I’ve got good reasons.
“He’s a good little fighter, he believes in himself, he’s got knockout power, and he’ll fight anybody.
“And he’s been calling for the Lomachenko fight for the past 4 or 5 fights, and he’s only had a few fights. He’s had all these amateur fights, and he knows what he’s doing.”

Former heavyweight champion Briggs added the caption: “Look at em y’all!!! ABSOLUTE POWER!”
In response, one fan commented: “He’s done hibernating. Looks like old Mike is back. Be afraid.”

Another added: “Man I think Roy is in trouble! Roy’s the man, just as Tyson is, but I just can’t see Roy pulling this one off.”
One said: “I feel bad for RJJ. My two favourite boxers but Mike is a damn monster.”
And one predicted: “Mike Tyson is winning this in the first round.”

In terms of the bout he was judging, O’Connor awarded it to home fighter Ritson, 117-111.
This was despite Sky Sports commentators, pundits and even Hearn himself believing Vazquez had comfortably done enough to win the fight.
Fellow judge Michael Alexander also scored it to Ritson, 115-113 with Marcus McDonnell handing it to the Mexican, 116-113.
Smith added that the ‘fight will be looked at’ as he ‘can completely understand why people felt Vazquez had won’.
The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed to SunSport they would be looking into the incident.
It’s not the first-time O’Connor has been caught up in controversy.
He was one of three judges who gave Callum Smith a wide-points win against John Ryder in November last year.
Many thought Ryder had shocked the champ into his first ever loss. O’Connor gave that fight 117-111 too.
The Birmingham judge was also slammed by promoter Mick Hennessey in 2017 when he gave Joseph Parker a 118-110 decision against Hughie Fury.
Hennessey said that O’Connor had ‘buckled under pressure’. More

But Mexican superstar Canelo has won titles in FOUR weights, starting at light-middleweight all the way up to light-heavy.
Canelo, 30, appears settled at super-middleweight, where he was due to challenge WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, 31, this summer.
But Texan Spence has made a case for Canelo to shrink back down to 160lb, so he can pile of the pounds for a blockbuster at the Dallas Cowboys’ home.
He told SunSport: “With Canelo, yeah, I’d definitely entertain that. That can happen, that’s a huge fight.

“That would be huge for the Cowboys’ stadium when we’re back to 100 per cent capacity.
    “That’s another mega-fight which I could have. I could have a lot of mega-fights.
“It takes quite a few pounds to get down to 147. I wouldn’t have any problems fighting at 160.
“But, at the end of the day, it’s down to the guys in suits.”

Lomachenko at crossroads after shock Lopez loss, with no rematch clause, many potential next fights or even retirement

TEOFIMO LOPEZ became the hottest ticket in boxing overnight and can now cherry pick the next man he makes a millionaire.
Aged just 23, the IBF super-lightweight king snatched the WBC, WBA and WBO belts away from pound-for-pound icon Vasiliy Lomachenko in the early hours of Sunday morning.

    5

With just one high-level win on his shallow pro record, the Brooklyn banger dominated the two-time Olympic champion over 12 one-sided rounds to become undisputed boss.
Those few super-fans who backed the upstart to upend the apple cart thought he might do it with a one-punch KO from the fistic gods.
But the wonderkid proved his mettle by bossing the little legend and shaking up the whole world boxing order.
Lopez now has the world as his oyster. But what will the 32-year-old fallen phenom do to repair his legacy?

    Rematch?
There was NO instant rematch clause written into the mega-money contract, despite the pair sharing Top Rank as promoters.
Newly crowned Lopez is going to be hounded by the four sanctioning bodies he now represents to defend their version of the title.
That means Loma is very unlikely to land a rematch for all of the same honours.
If Lopez really fancied it, the likelihood is it would have to happen without one of his titles, as boxing’s suicidal insistence on adding more weight classes and titles continues.

And the original victory was conclusive enough to mean only hardcore Loma fans are demanding a rerun.

Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring winner
Irish icon Frampton is bidding to become the Emerald Isle’s first three-weight champ with a win over the American WBO super-featherweight boss, in early 2021.
Loma has rejected the idea of going up in weight anymore and had his homework confirmed on Saturday.
But he could reclaim his old title and launch a bid to become undisputed at 9st 4lbs with a win over the Belfast icon or America’s former Marine once they decide their overdue bout.

Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz winner
Tank Davis is the Floyd Mayweather protege who had always promised to destroy Loma, even before Lopez got the chance.
The weight-hopping Baltimore banger has his hands full on October 31 when he faces Mexico’s WBA super-feather king.
Three-weight champ Davis, the tattooed softly-spoken superstar, would be an ideal Loma opponent if he can stay disciplined enough to bulldoze Cruz.
And fight fans would love the idea of Davis and mentor Mayweather crossing swords with Loma and his trainer/father Anatoly.

    Meeting the Monster
Naoya Inoue – Japan’s three-weight world champion – has destroyed almost everything in his path.
The 27-year-old has blitzed his way to world titles at light-flyweight, super-flyweight and bantamweight and has been backed to venture higher if it means locking in a clash with Loma.
Top Rank icon Bob Arum has said: “He’s a featherweight. He had to eat extra food to box at 135lbs.
“We have Jamel Herring, Miguel Berchelt, Oscar Valdez, Carl Frampton, we have plenty of activity.
“If we can’t get decent fights at lightweight, we will drop down and fight at 130 or 126.”
“Inoue is a big kid and could go up to 126 and he says he wants to fight Lomachenko. There will be plenty of big fights for Loma.”

    Retire?
The one thing about Lomachenko and gym-mate Oleksandr Usyk is that they are complete mavericks.
Deeply religious men, Ukraine icons and Olympic immortals, they are not in professional boxing to make a few quid.
If Loma feels there is too much aggravation in trying to hold all four belts at a lower weight – having had titles at feather, super-feather and lightweight – he could just walk away as one of the most celebrated and mysterious men of the sport.
The man formerly known as Hi-Tec and ‘The Matrix’ loves to fish and kayak, to play chess and backgammon.
You cannot imagine he would worry about walking away from the grubby business of prize fighting.
It’s unlikely he would quit on such a disappointing loss, but rest assured – when he calls it a day you will never see him limp back in like so many struggling heroes for one last payday.
