Eddie Hearn: From selling double-glazing in Essex to billion dollar dealmaker who is promoting Chisora vs Usyk

AS Dereck Chisora and Oleksandr Usyk prepare to square up to one another in Thursday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s bout, a 6ft 5in figure in a smart, fitted suit looms next to them.
After their original May fight was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, Eddie Hearn, 41, was influential in rearranging the dust-up to this weekend at Wembley Arena.

The Dagenham-born promoter is the group managing director of Matchroom Sport, as well as director of the Professional Darts Corporation.
Family man Hearn, estimated to be worth £40m, knows a good earner when he sees one.
And after expertly guiding the career of Joshua to signing boxing’s first ever billion dollar deal, he’s certainly come a long way from the 15-year-old who was selling double-glazing in Essex on £3 an hour.
    FLUNKED SCHOOL
Hearn, the son of promoter Barry Hearn who famously swelled the coffers of boxers including Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank, and Nigel Benn – went to posh Brentwood High School.

But, in truth, he struggled academically. When he flunked his GCSEs, he failed to get into sixth form.
His father pleaded with the school to allow Eddie to stay on because of his prowess in cricket and football, but it was no use.
“I grew up thinking I was a hard nut, and in Brentwood School I was,” he once said. “Anywhere else I was a pansy.”
Hearn went to the less selective Havering Sixth Form College in Romford to study A-levels in media studies, PE, and business studies.

He was on a promise from his dad of £1,000 if he got a C or better in his exams. Hearn scored two Cs and one A.
    AMATEUR BOXING TO SHIFTING WINDOWS
Eddie initially thought about pursuing a career in boxing.
He fought in an amateur fight as Eddie Hills, amusingly because his dad didn’t want him to get a pasting because of the family name.
But sales was where he belonged, with a gift-of-the-gab inherited from his old man.
“I worked for Weatherseal in Romford. I’d go there after college at night and do telesales,” he told The Guardian.
“It’s the worst job in the world but the best training for sales.
“For every rejection we had an answer on a list – from ‘I’ve just lost my husband,’ to ‘I’ve just done my double-glazing.’
“We always had a reason to make an appointment.”

    A SPORTING CHANCE
At 18, Hearn had scored a work experience with Richard Busby and BDS Sponsorship, and was later employed full-time.
Then, his life took a different trajectory.
A call from a recruiter head-hunting for a senior position at the sports agency LEA offered him an interview.
Naturally, Hearn impressed in the interview and within three years he had clients including Ian Botham, as well as several high-profile golfers.
His father Barry, who built an empire with Matchroom Sport in the 1980s through snooker, had a masterplan.
He invited his son onboard for a subdivision called Matchroom Golf.
Then he turned to cards, with the group promoting the Poker Million final to an audience of 30 million people, which is where they cornered the market.
    A BOXING BREAK
A chance meeting with fallen champ Audley Harrison was the catalyst for Matchroom Boxing, that now houses Hearn’s prized possessions.
The pair were sat on a poker table together, when the heavyweight boxer asked Hearn for his help.

“I was playing in the World Series of Poker and happened to be drawn on the same table as Audley, who asked if he could get on a Matchroom show,” Hearn said.
“So I phoned up the old man and told him: ‘I think we can do something with Audley.’
“The phone went stone quiet. Then he said: ‘You’re on your own, I’m going nowhere near him.’”
Eddie put Harrison on Prizefighter, which he duly one.
And then got him a European title show, in which the Londoner defeated Michael Sprott in 2010.
Incredibly, that earned Harrison a WBA title fight with David Haye.
Harrison was knocked out in the third round, but it put Hearn on the map.
“Those days are fun because it’s just you against the world,” Hearn told Square Mile.
“No one really knows who you are. You’re just this kid whose blagging it. It’s fun, then.
“Doesn’t come with the pressures and responsibilities and aggravation now. I weren’t a threat.”
    TODAY
Since 2012, Hearn has built up a stable of boxers renowned around the world that are box office draws.
It’s afforded him the luxury of offices at the family’s Brentwood estate to a plush floor at New York’s One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
He really is on top of the world.

In 2018, Hearn scored the deal of all deals that’ll see him split more time between the UK and America.
DAZN offered Matchroom Boxing $1billion (the highest deal in boxing ever) to stream 16 fights in America, and a further 16 in the UK.
“HBO and Showtime are the two major players over here,” Hearn said.
“And that is a bigger annual budget than they have put together. It’s the biggest deal in boxing history.”
And Hearn has put pressure on himself to make it work.
“We were dangerous before, now we’re unstoppable and that’s the difference,” he said. “And if I don’t make this work, I’ve failed miserably.”

    MRS HEARN
Behind every great man is a better woman. Chloe Hearn is the matriarch of the family, and mother of their daughters Sophia and Isabella.
She used to be famous in Essex for owing a beauty salon with TOWIE star Chloe Sims, and it regularly appeared on the reality TV show.
However, it officially closed its doors and soon Chloe became a wife in Bel-Ar, where she spends most of her time in their LA home.

Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales – with combined age of 90 – to come out of retirement for FOURTH fight

MEXICAN boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales are set to come out of retirement for a FOURTH fight.
It comes 15 years after they completed their epic trilogy, which Barrera won to emerge victorious from the series.

The pair – who have a combined age of 90 – confirmed to ESPN that they plan to box over four rounds in an exhibition bout.
A date is yet to be announced, but the icons want fans to be able to attend the event.
Morales, now 44, won the first bout – voted 2000’s Fight of The Year – despite many believing it should have gone the other way.
Barrera, 46, got revenge in the rematch two years later, which was a more tactical affair.

But again controversy struck as several ringside scored it to Morales.
The third and final decider took place in 2004 – again winning Fight of The Year – with Barrera winning by majority decision.
Their decision to box for a fourth time comes as Mike Tyson, 54, prepares to face Roy Jones Jr, 51.
The American legends are fighting over eight exhibition rounds, which will be Tyson’s first fight since 2005, whereas Jones only retired in 2018.

But they are now boxing over two minute rounds, instead of three, after the WBC became involved in the pay-per-view spectacle and changed the rules.

It followed after Julio Cesar Chavez, 58, beat Jorge Arce, 41, in a four-round exhibition in September.
The WBC argued the veteran duo were too exhausted fighting over three-minute rounds.
They did have head guards on, but Tyson and Jones will not be, though they will wear 12oz gloves instead of the regular 10oz used in the pro ranks.

Derek Chisora set to become WBO mandatory and fight Anthony Joshua if he beats Oleksandr Usyk, confirms David Haye

DEREK CHISORA could be in line for a sensational world title fight against fellow Brit Anthony Joshua if he beats Oleksandr Usyk this weekend.
The Finchley brawler is a big underdog to spring a shock against the Ukrainian at Wembley Arena.

Usyk unified the cruiserweight division before stepping up to heavyCredit: ©Mark Robinson Ltd

But if Chisora upsets the odds, he is in line to take the WBO mandatory position, according to his trainer David Haye.
That belt is held by Joshua, with Usyk the current mandatory challenger having unified at cruiserweight and stepping up to heavy.
Speaking to iFL TV, Haye explained: “I’ll find out this week. I’ve written a letter to Paco [Valcarcel], the president of the WBO, stating that Derek should be, by beating the mandatory [Usyk], he should become mandatory himself.
“There’s only so many times he can go to the well. If there’s ever a chance for him to get a world title shot, it’s off the back of this victory.

“We believe common sense will prevail and that the WBO, a great organization that Derek has worked closely with for many years, this is his opportunity.
“This is something on the sidelines.”
Joshua has his own business to take care of when he defends his WBO, WBA and IBF world titles against Kubrat Pulev on December 12 in London.
And of course there are the two fights against WBC king Tyson Fury in 2021 that the pair ‘agreed’ at the start of coronavirus lockdown.

David Haye has revealed he has written to the WBO to insist Chisora becomes their mandatory if he beats UsykCredit: PA:Press Association

But whoever is the WBO mandatory at the end of the weekend could throw a spanner in the works.
And if it is indeed Chisora, it would complete a stunning return to the boxing summit.
The 36-year-old had a first world title shot in 2012 when he fell to a points defeat against Vitali Klitschko.
He has lost nine times in his career, including twice to Fury and once to his now-trainer Haye.
But Chisora has never dodged a fight and was involved in two memorable brawls with fellow Londoner Dillian Whyte – with many believing he was unlucky to lose in the first.

Oleksandr Usyk sets sights on Hollywood career after turning Derek Chisora’s Halloween into horror movie

OLEKSANDR USYK wants to be a film star after casting Derek Chisora in a Halloween horror.
Ukraine’s 2012 Olympic champ and former undisputed cruiserweight king continues his assault on the heavyweight division on Saturday.

A win will tee the WBO’s mandatory challenger up for a shot at WBA, IBF and WBO  champion Anthony Joshua in 2021 — and take him closer  to  emulating American star Evander Holyfield’s  achievement of ruling both top tiers.
Then the father of three will swap belts for the silver screen.
Usyk, 33, has starred in a couple of Ukrainian films and turned down a role in Creed 2 that Sylvester Stallone offered him to focus on a fight.
He said: “I love boxing and I don’t need much rest. I have my wife and three children and plenty to keep me busy.

“I love spending time with my family but I am probably even more relaxed in my  training camps.
“As long as I am motivated to get up at 5am to train and work hard, I will box.
“The moment I feel I don’t want to get out of bed, I will start thinking about finishing my boxing career and starting on my Hollywood movie career.”
Eddie Hearn knows how hard it can be to promote a non- English speaker in British boxing but he has seen Usyk’s five-star charisma close-up.

Hearn said: “Usyk is so fascinating, he is a star, made for movies.
“The social media numbers around him — even when he is just dancing — are mad.
“People moan about Canelo, Gennady Golovkin and Vasiliy Lomachenko not selling fights in the UK and America because they don’t speak English.

Ukrainian superstar Oleksandr Usyk won Olympic gold in 2012 but aims to move onto the silver screenCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“But here you have a guy who doesn’t need to — it adds to his mystery around him.
“And he is a deep thinker. Tony Bellew liked him before their fight and Derek Chisora does too — that is so rare.”
Usyk cleaned out the 14st 4lb cruiserweight division, not with KO power but with masterful footwork, speed and precision.
Londoner Chisora — who will become just his second opponent at heavyweight level when they clash at  Wembley Arena on Saturday — is an 18st wrecking machine who has gone the distance with Tyson Fury and Vitali Klitschko and knocked out  powerhouses like David Price and Carlos Takam.
And southpaw stylist Usyk admits the extra pounds he has had to pack on for resilience and strength have chipped away at some of his best attributes
He said: “I feel more power. I have put extra weight on my body and when I train in the gym, I don’t feel as flexible or sharp but that is only because of the hard work.

“He is a really big guy and he hits hard — but I will train hard and be in my best shape because I love boxing very much.
“When it comes to sparring and boxing, me and my team will decide on my optimum weight.
“I will stay on that weight and it will be ideal for my movement because that is my main skill.”

Savannah Marshall vowing for world title win this weekend but ‘couldn’t care less’ about Claressa Shields super-fight

SAVANNAH MARSHALL knows a world title win on Saturday will mean she never has to sell her Claressa Shields rematch again – or her smelly socks!
The Hartlepool ace fights Scotland’s Hannah Rankin for the WBO middleweight crown, on the undercard of Derek Chisora vs Oleksandr Usyk, at a booming time for female fighting.

A handful of rising stars are using their glass-ceiling smashing skills to rival the best male bouts, while a couple prefer more creative ways to make their name in the hurt business.
But 29-year-old Marshall holds no grudges apart from the one with the undefeated American ace she beat in the amateurs in 2012.
The Silent Assassin said: “I read about the girl auctioning her gym socks online. I don’t know her personally but I’ve come across her on Twitter and fair play to her.

    — WBO (@WorldBoxingOrg) October 20, 2020

“She’s not from America or the UK, where women’s boxing has taken off, so she’s made everyone notice her.

“She’s got a three-fight deal with Matchroom so hats off to her. That’s not me, that’s not my personality.
“I only post on social media because I have to, if it wasn’t for boxing I don’t think I’d have it.
“My trainer Peter Fury always tells me ‘if you’re good enough, you’ll get there.’”
Marshall was good enough to beat three-weight pro champ Shields at the World Championships in China and has been plagued with questions on the rematch ever since.

And if she lands her first world honour at Wembley arena she can quietly settle the score for good.

The first question was: ‘Does Claressa motivate you?’ I had just woken up and I kind of bit his head off.
    Savannah Marshall

The 8-0 ace said: “I did an interview yesterday and the journalist’s first question was: ‘Does Claressa motivate you?’
“I had just woken up and I kind of bit his head off because I couldn’t care less about Claressa.
“I know professional boxing is a business and being at the bigger weights means there is no other fight out there for me really.”
Marshall’s original fight with Rankin should have happened on October 17 but mentor Fury tested positive for Covid-19 and the fight was postponed.
It was a second stroke of bad luck as her February crack at the WBO light-heavyweight belt was also KO’d by the pandemic.
But, on reflection, this 11st 6lbs all-English contest is a much better fit to Marshall’s long-term plans and cholesterol levels.
She joked: “It’s not every little girl’s dream to have the word ‘heavyweight’ in their title! And I have never really hit 168lbs even as a super-middleweight.

“But I must admit the sparring at that weight was a bit better because I was probably being allowed to eat a bit more and eat the wrong things, a few too many takeaways maybe.
“But, if I get offered that fight again, then I would still take it because opportunities in women’s boxing are still so few and far between.
“And imagine how much I could eat to go up to cruiserweight!”

Anthony Joshua warns Oleksandr Usyk ‘people don’t respect’ your power as Ukrainian prepares for Derek Chisora fight

ANTHONY JOSHUA has warned Oleksandr Usyk that ‘people don’t respect’ his power ahead of his fight with Derek Chisora.

The former undisputed cruiserweight champion is the mandatory challenger to AJ’s WBO belt and expects to receive his title shot next year.
Discussing Usyk’s in-ring tactics, Joshua told Sky Sports: “When I boxed Andy Ruiz Jr in the second fight I adapted to the Usyk style.
“Hit and don’t get hit, the sweet science of boxing. You learn that from the amateurs.
“I was amateur for two-and-a-half years so was still adapting to different styles. Usyk was amateur for a long time so he has taken the ‘hit and don’t get hit’ style into the pros.

“The good thing that helped me? Sometimes I know to sit down on my feet and hurt someone.
“You’ve got to let them know that you’re there because all that pitty-patty stuff after 12 rounds? Sometimes people don’t respect that type of power.”
Joshua puts his IBF, WBA and WBO belts on the line against Kubrat Pulev on December 12.
He then wants to face WBC king Tyson Fury in 2021 to determine the undisputed heavyweight champ.

However, Usyk’s co-promoter Alexander Krassyuk, who works alongside Eddie Hearn, insists his fighter’s opportunity will happen.
He said: “He has agreed to let AJ versus Kubrat Pulev happen, with regards that the winner fights him next. This statement is still solid.
“Our plan is: A) beat Derek Chisora, B) push AJ to comply with WBO rules or vacate the title, C) defeat AJ (or any other WBO champion or contender and become the heavyweight champion. Simple and practical.”

Deontay Wilder has ‘missed boat’ on Tyson Fury trilogy and Anthony Joshua fight and could be ‘done’, reveals Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN believes Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury’s two-fight deal will see Deontay Wilder waiting over a year for a world title shot.
The Bronze Bomber’s trilogy bout against the Gypsy King has failed to materialise, with the unbeaten Brit to now focus on his December 5 homecoming.

Anthony Joshua is set to face the Gypsy King twice in 2021 with all the world titles on the lineCredit: PA:Press Association

Fury’s attention will then turn to Joshua, with the pair agreeing terms on a two-fight deal in 2021.
Joshua must first beat his IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev with the duo to meet at the 02 Arena on December 12.
Earlier this week, Fury’s US-based promoter Bob Arum hit out at Wilder’s management team as he claimed they never read the contract sent out to them.
And with Fury and AJ scheduled to pit their wits against each other next year, Hearn has stated Wilder could be ‘done’.

He told Sky Sports: “Wilder? I don’t know any fighter that wouldn’t want the rematch. But I want to hear him. He’s gone missing.
“[Fury’s American promoter] Bob Arum says the contract has expired? What sort of contract was this?
“We’re coming off a global pandemic and the force majeure would cover them. It’s all really weird.
“Wilder has missed the boat. He won’t get a shot at the world title until 2022 onwards because we are going to have two fights [with Fury] next year if we beat Pulev.

“Maybe he is done. You wouldn’t hold it against him. But I don’t understand the situation.”
Wilder has gone quiet on social media, having not posted anything on Twitter or Instagram since August.
    BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Hearn has also revealed when the bouts between AJ and Fury will likely take place in 2021.
He said: “You break them up into probably May, June, and then November, December [for the rematch]. April, May, June, and then November, December.
“I think it’s about where and of course they’re two British heavyweight world champions, and if one of those fights at least didn’t take place in the UK it would be a shame.
“I know ultimately people think it’s my decision but it’s really not.
“We will take all the offers that will come from all around the world and present them to both teams and both fighters.
“Ultimately, normally, the biggest offer wins.”
