Mike Tyson hits back at Floyd Mayweather over boxing world title criticism and says more belts means extra money

MIKE TYSON has hit back at Floyd Mayweather’s claims that there are too many belts in boxing.
Undefeated former champ Mayweather, 43, won 15 world titles in his 50-fight career, across five weight divisions.

But he recently told the sport’s various organisations to ‘sort their s*** out’, saying that ‘everybody’s a champion” and accusing them of taking extra money from fighters.
Tyson, 54, and old foe Roy Jones Jr came out of retirement on Saturday night to fight for the WBC Frontline Battle Belt, despite it being an exhibition scrap.
The match ended in a draw but Tyson has opened a war of words with Mayweather over his comments.
Reported by Essentially Sports, Tyson said: “Boxing never has too many belts because every time it’s a championship fight, it’s more money for the fighter.

“There’s never enough belts you know?
“To say there’s one champion and there’s 10 guys, how long will it take for the champion to fight the 10 guys?
“Plus they gotta go through each other… It’s good to have three champions because then everybody can get paid… Everybody makes money.
“That’s what this business is about. Money.”

Mayweather angered Tyson by saying: “The WBC, the WBA, the IBF and the WBO, y’all have to clean this sh** up. Y’all have to clean this up.

“This is bad for boxing. Ain’t a such thing as no super champion.
“You guys are just taking extra money from all these fighters, getting extra money from sanctioning fees. And this goes for my company as well.
“We gotta clean this sport of boxing up. This s***, this don’t look good.”

But his fight – on the undercard for Billy Joe Saunders’ win over Martin Murray – ended in a points defeat to the 20-year-old from Sheffield who moved to 5-0.
And it came at a cost as he sustained a fracture – which required surgery – in the sixth and final round in London.
A battered Dragone tweeted on Saturday morning: “Morning all, thank you for all your support last night was a great battle.
“Sadly suffered broken jaw in round 6 last night waiting to go into theatre now.

“Thanks to my Team and doctors @MatchroomBoxing for acting so fast.
    “I’ll be back – Congratulations @DonteDixon_TP.”
The Welshman added late last night: “Well tonight wasn’t my night!! But couldn’t of done anymore.
“Pushed all the way in a hard 6 rounds battle – in the last round I suffered a broken jaw and on the way home to hospital now.

“There was no way I was taking a knee, my drive and mentality kept me on my feet.”
Boxing chief Eddie Hearn replied: “Sorry to hear that mate recover soon, amazing effort last night you will be back stronger.”

Ricky Hatton says he was cheated after Floyd Mayweather loss in 2007 and ‘smelt a rat’ in referee Joe Cortez

RICKY HATTON “felt cheated” after losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and said he “smelt a rat” in referee Joe Cortez.
Hatton was knocked out in round ten by then welterweight champion Mayweather in Las Vegas.

Ricky Hatton ‘felt cheated’ after losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2007

Hatton said he ‘smelt a rat’ in referee Joe Cortez

But the fearsome body puncher was unable to work on the inside – like he did to beat Kostya Tszyu two years prior – with Cortez keen to break up the pair.
To this day Hatton believes his opponent was helped by the official, who had a history of letting fighters trade up close.
And he used former opponents Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana – who Mayweather beat easier in rematches – to suggest the unbeaten legend struggled against inside fighters.
Hatton told BT Sports: “I did give him a good run for his money.

“I feel a little bit cheated to be honest with you, because I felt that I wasn’t going to outbox him and I wasn’t going to out-speed him, but if I was allowed to get close I would definitely throw more punches than him.

I smelt a rat that night with the referee and I don’t think I was given a fair crack of the whip.
    Hatton on referee Cortez

“I never got the opportunity and that’s the thing that will always eat away at me – the referee never gave me the opportunity.
“The one person that was allowed to get stuck in and bully him and was allowed to fight close was Marcos Maidana and he pushed him really close.
“Castillo was allowed to get close and a lot of people thought Castillo won, so I smelt a rat that night with the referee and I don’t think I was given a fair crack of the whip.”

After the loss Hatton would go on to hire Mayweather’s dad, Floyd Sr, winning twice.
But following a devastating second round KO defeat to Manny Pacquiao, the Manchester hero spent three years out of the ring before losing his comeback to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012.
He then retired and has since become a successful coach – but in reflexion he feels the performance he put in against Tszyu in 2005 would have been enough to beat Mayweather.

Hatton told Sky Sports: “Against Kostya Tszyu, with a referee who let the fight flow at a distance and up close, I would have beaten anyone that night, including Floyd.
“I’m not saying I was a better fighter than Floyd. But the right tactics on the right night at the right time? Even the best can be beaten.
“If I fought him on that night, I think I might have beaten him.”

George Foreman backs Tyson Fury to beat Anthony Joshua and defends Wilder for blaming ring-walk costume for loss

GEORGE FOREMAN has written off Anthony Joshua’s if he ever gets to fight Tyson Fury.
The 71-year-old legend claimed a fighter “needs to bring everything” to beat the Gypsy King – but doesn’t think that would be enough for AJ.

Joshua and Fury have been told to win their next mandated fights before setting up a “Super Bowl” undisputed decider.
Two-time heavyweight champion Foreman has predicted the Gypsy King would come out on top if the two Brits locked horns.
He told iFL TV: “That boy Tyson Fury, you’re gonna have to bring everything you’ve got to beat him.
“And I’m going to be honest with you, I just cannot see Joshua beating him.

“But I sure would buy some tickets to see what would happen, I’m that curious about it.
“But that Tyson Fury man, woooh, Fury – I mean, how did he get the name?”

Deontay Wilder claimed his legs were tired after wearing this outfit for the ring-walkCredit: USA TODAY Sports
Fury snatched the WBC heavyweight crown from American rival Deontay Wilder at the second time of asking.
The 31-year-old put in the best performance of his career to win the February fight after just seven rounds.

After Wilder’s five-year reign came to end, he blamed his extravagant ring-walk outfit for the defeat.
He rocked up to the ring wearing a jewellery-encrusted costume that was made to celebrate Black History Month.
Following his first career loss, he told Yahoo: “He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is that my uniform was was too heavy for me. ”
Foreman has claimed it is routine procedure for a fighter to make up an excuse for their defeat.
The 71-year-old added: “When I lost to Muhammad Ali in Africa all those years back, the ropes were loose, someone put something in my water, it was too early in the morning – oh, the excuses went on.
“You’ve got to have excuses when you lose, especially when you’re undefeated.

“You can’t just say, ‘I lost’. You can’t say that.
“And that’s gravity, that’s putting yourself solidly down to make an excellent comeback.
“He can come back and he can win again, easily. All fighters can.”

Eddie Hearn: From selling double-glazing in Essex to billion dollar dealmaker who promotes Anthony Joshua

AS Dereck Chisora and Oleksandr Usyk prepared to square up to one another in the press conference before their October bout, a 6ft 5in figure in a smart, fitted suit loomed next to them.
After their original May fight was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, Eddie Hearn, 41, was influential in rearranging the dust-up between the pair at Wembley Arena.

The Dagenham-born promoter is the group managing director of Matchroom Sport, as well as director of the Professional Darts Corporation.
Family man Hearn, estimated to be worth £40m, knows a good earner when he sees one.
And after expertly guiding the career of Anthony Joshua to signing boxing’s first ever billion dollar deal, he’s certainly come a long way from the 15-year-old who was selling double-glazing in Essex on £3 an hour.
    FLUNKED SCHOOL
Hearn, the son of promoter Barry Hearn who famously swelled the coffers of boxers including Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank, and Nigel Benn – went to posh Brentwood High School.

But, in truth, he struggled academically. When he flunked his GCSEs, he failed to get into sixth form.
His father pleaded with the school to allow Eddie to stay on because of his prowess in cricket and football, but it was no use.
“I grew up thinking I was a hard nut, and in Brentwood School I was,” he once said. “Anywhere else I was a pansy.”
Hearn went to the less selective Havering Sixth Form College in Romford to study A-levels in media studies, PE, and business studies.

He was on a promise from his dad of £1,000 if he got a C or better in his exams. Hearn scored two Cs and one A.
    AMATEUR BOXING TO SHIFTING WINDOWS
Eddie initially thought about pursuing a career in boxing.
He fought in an amateur fight as Eddie Hills, amusingly because his dad didn’t want him to get a pasting because of the family name.
But sales was where he belonged, with a gift-of-the-gab inherited from his old man.
“I worked for Weatherseal in Romford. I’d go there after college at night and do telesales,” he told The Guardian.
“It’s the worst job in the world but the best training for sales.
“For every rejection we had an answer on a list – from ‘I’ve just lost my husband,’ to ‘I’ve just done my double-glazing.’
“We always had a reason to make an appointment.”

    A SPORTING CHANCE
At 18, Hearn had scored a work experience with Richard Busby and BDS Sponsorship, and was later employed full-time.
Then, his life took a different trajectory.
A call from a recruiter head-hunting for a senior position at the sports agency LEA offered him an interview.
Naturally, Hearn impressed in the interview and within three years he had clients including Ian Botham, as well as several high-profile golfers.
His father Barry, who built an empire with Matchroom Sport in the 1980s through snooker, had a masterplan.
He invited his son onboard for a subdivision called Matchroom Golf.
Then he turned to cards, with the group promoting the Poker Million final to an audience of 30 million people, which is where they cornered the market.
    A BOXING BREAK
A chance meeting with fallen champ Audley Harrison was the catalyst for Matchroom Boxing, that now houses Hearn’s prized possessions.
The pair were sat on a poker table together, when the heavyweight boxer asked Hearn for his help.

“I was playing in the World Series of Poker and happened to be drawn on the same table as Audley, who asked if he could get on a Matchroom show,” Hearn said.
“So I phoned up the old man and told him: ‘I think we can do something with Audley.’
“The phone went stone quiet. Then he said: ‘You’re on your own, I’m going nowhere near him.’”
Eddie put Harrison on Prizefighter, which he duly won.
And then got him a European title show, in which the Londoner defeated Michael Sprott in 2010.
Incredibly, that earned Harrison a WBA title fight with David Haye.
Harrison was knocked out in the third round, but it put Hearn on the map.
“Those days are fun because it’s just you against the world,” Hearn told Square Mile.
“No one really knows who you are. You’re just this kid whose blagging it. It’s fun, then.
“Doesn’t come with the pressures and responsibilities and aggravation now. I weren’t a threat.”
    TODAY
Since 2012, Hearn has built up a stable of boxers renowned around the world that are box office draws.
It’s afforded him the luxury of offices at the family’s Brentwood estate to a plush floor at New York’s One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
He really is on top of the world.

In 2018, Hearn scored the deal of all deals that’ll see him split more time between the UK and America.
DAZN offered Matchroom Boxing $1billion (the highest deal in boxing ever) to stream 16 fights in America, and a further 16 in the UK.
“HBO and Showtime are the two major players over here,” Hearn said.
“And that is a bigger annual budget than they have put together. It’s the biggest deal in boxing history.”
And Hearn has put pressure on himself to make it work.
“We were dangerous before, now we’re unstoppable and that’s the difference,” he said. “And if I don’t make this work, I’ve failed miserably.”

    MRS HEARN
Behind every great man is a better woman. Chloe Hearn is the matriarch of the family, and mother of their daughters Sophia and Isabella.
She used to be famous in Essex for owing a beauty salon with TOWIE star Chloe Sims, and it regularly appeared on the reality TV show.
However, it officially closed its doors and soon Chloe became a wife in Bel-Air, where she spends most of her time in their LA home.
It’s a tough life for the Hearns.

Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev: Date, UK start time, TV channel, live stream, undercard for HUGE world title fight

BOXING gets even bigger this year as Anthony Joshua prepares to take on Kubrat Pulev in a huge heavyweight clash in front of 1,000 fans at Wembley Arena.
Joshua will be defending his WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles against the Bulgarian, who he was scheduled to face over three years ago.

How the fighters compare ahead of their heavyweight bout

The fight is a big one for Joshua, who can all but secure a money-spinning pair of bouts with Tyson Fury with an emphatic win.
When is Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev?
The fight is scheduled to take place on December 12.
It was originally scheduled for June 20 but the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to those plans.
What time does Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev start?
Fight night will likely get underway at around 5pm with some undercard bouts live on Facebook.
Joshua vs Pulev can be expected to start at around 10.30pm UK time on December 12.

    What has been said?
“I have been watching his fights carefully. He has a good style and he is a good specimen, but he has not shown any mental toughness,” Pulev said.
“Yes, he has skills, but he hasn’t shown the mental strength. This is something from within, in the blood of a man, and he does not have it.
“Whatever mental toughness he’s got, I know I’m the harder person. This is the difference – my toughness will prevail.”

But Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said his man will do the business on fight night.
“I went to see him yesterday, he looked absolutely sensational,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“He’s learning, he’s punching so hard, so sharp, so fast. I think this is going to be a tough fight against Kubrat Pulev. I also think he is going to absolutely destroy him.
“I think he’s going to break him down, he’s going to dissect him, and he’s going to punish him. I think you’re going to see a statement.
