John Fury backs Daniel Dubois for taking knee but warns he’ll ‘probably get head boxed off’ if he fights son Tyson

JOHN FURY has defended Daniel Dubois’ decision to take a knee in the tenth round of his bout with Joe Joyce last weekend – but warned that he would ‘probably get his head boxed off’ by son Tyson.
Big John joined the likes of Anthony Joshua and Anthony Ogogo in backing Dubois’ call to end the fight, insisting that it’s not worth ‘losing your career’ over.

Dubois, 23, has been heavily criticised by many in the boxing community for ‘giving up’, despite having suffered a cracked eye socket and a bleed on the retina – with Dillian Whyte, Carl Frampton and Chris Eubank Jr among his detractors.
But Fury, 56, took a more long-term view.
He told talkSPORT: “The lad done very, very well. He’s 23 years old.
“It’s only a boxing match. He’s not gonna lose his eye over a boxing match, is he?

“I think he’s done the right thing.
“Joe Joyce is a gigantic man and he was hitting hard with the jab.
“Who knows? It could be a career-threatening injury.
“You’re not gonna lose your career over a boxing match, are you?”

Daniel Dubois’ eye was in a horrific state by the end of the fightCredit: Getty Images – Getty

On a potential future WBC title shot at son Tyson, however, John was brutally honest in his assessment.
He added: “Probably, yeah, why not? He’s capable, he’s capable.
“He’ll probably get his head boxed off, but he’s capable.”

It is easy for people to criticise from outside the ring — but some people have been out of order
    Anthony Joshua

On Dubois’ future, meanwhile, Joshua exclusively told SunSport: “If Daniel needs someone to speak to, he should call me.
“It is easy for people to criticise from outside the ring — but some people have been out of order.
“Daniel took a massive risk in taking that fight, as did Joe Joyce.
“They both knew the dangers and they both put it all on the line.
“I hear people talking respectfully about tapping out in MMA fights.
“Then when a boxer stops because his eyeball is about to fall out, they call him a ‘quitter’ — are they serious?”

But more importantly, his first fight since his horror car crash in October last year.

He challenges for the Errol Spence Jr’s WBC and IBF welterweight titles NEXT.

    NOT DAN AND OUT
Following such a devastating collision, Errol Spence Jr could have been excused for wanting an easier route back to the ring.
But instead, the defiant southpaw – feeling he has something to prove – wanted only to face the best.
So now his fight against Danny Garcia – which was set for January until the crash – will be his first since escaping death.
And it was a request he specifically asked his advisor Al Haymon at PBC to approve.
Spence told SunSport: “Fighting a lesser opponent that I know I can beat, I don’t think it would have me 100 per cent focussed like Danny Garcia has got me.
“I basically told my manager Al Haymon, ‘I’m a shark, don’t put me in the pool with tuna’s and seabass. Put me in the tank with other sharks’.
“I want to be in there with a shark, so we chose Danny Garcia.”

Floyd Mayweather reveals he didn’t knock Conor McGregor out early to make sure mega-money rematch happens

FLOYD MAYWEATHER insists he decided against knocking out Conor McGregor early so the pair could have a money-spinning rematch.
The 43-year-old American came out of retirement to beat the UFC star in ten rounds in 2017 before hanging up his gloves again.

Floyd Mayweather claims he avoided beating Conor McGregor earlyCredit: AFP or licensors

McGregor started well, winning some of the opening rounds before the exhausted ring novice was picked apart by Mayweather, who barley shed a sweat until the finish.
Mayweather – who claimed he only did push ups and sit ups as training for the fight – is adamant he could have ended the bout whenever he pleased.
But with the possibility of a lucrative rematch taking place afterwards, the multi-millionaire decided to keep the fight competitive.
He told Drink Champs: “I took it serious, but I wanted to have some fun in the fight and I wanted to entertain the people.

“You have to give the people a show, so I gave the people a show.
“If I wanted to go out there and f*** him up and blaze him right out the gate, I could’ve did that. But my thing is this, if I would’ve did that, then it wouldn’t be probably a part two.”
After Mayweather’s Las Vegas win, he returned a year later in an exhibition bout against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Tokyo.
The American legend then announced in 2019 he was “coming out of retirement in 2020” to work with UFC boss Dana White.

Mayweather revealed he has no intentions of facing boxers, believing he has nothing left to prove against anyone in the sport, and suggested only crossover bouts against UFC stars like McGregor or Khabib Nurmagomedov will bring him back to the ring.
Next year, Mayweather is set to compete at an MMA event at the Tokyo Dome called Mega 20201. However, it is not known in what capacity he is fighting – boxing or MMA.

Errol Spence Jr wins first fight back since life-threatening car crash as he dominates Danny Garcia on points

ERROL SPENCE JR marked his return to the ring with a dominant points victory against Danny Garcia to preserve his welterweight crown.

And he proved to have no ring rust as he controlled the action throughout to retain his WBC and IBF titles and move to 27-0.
After the win, Spence, 30, said: “The moment is surreal.
“It has been a dream of mine since coming back from my accident and I think I looked pretty good.
“I had a little ring rust in there but I shook off the cobwebs and I would love to be back in the summer.

“I wanted someone like Danny Garcia who would push me.”
Spence established early dominance as he walked Garcia down with a solid jab.
The champion also profited from investing in the body early, as he slowed down the challenger with hooks downstairs.

Garcia – sitting on the back foot waiting to counter punch – was accurate when he responded, but was not busy enough.
The first half of the fight was decided with Spence’s educated pressure, with his jab, short left hand and body shots raking up the rounds.
Going into the sixth, Garcia’s eye was beginning to bruise, thanks to the non-stop work rate of the champion.
When the two came in close, Spence completely outworked Garcia, throwing in big numbers, overwhelming his opponent.
In round eight, Garcia came out more aggressive, but struggled to put a dent in the hometown hero.
Spence would end the round on top, walking his man down with a high guard, letting his hands go in close.
In the ninth, Garcia landed an eye-catching short one-two, but it counted for little as he was out punched throughout the three-minute session.

The challenger kept up the work in round ten, scoring with a right to Spence’s head and body, who was caught momentarily off balance.
Garcia looked to be upping his product down the stretch, but after a hard right landed in round 11, Spence proved his champion mentality by firing back to the body.
In the 12th and final round, Spence finished on top, walking forward and pushing the pace of the fight.
As the last bell sounded, Garcia was convincingly beaten, but boxed competitively throughout.
With prior losses to Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, it leaves the Philadelphia puncher with a rebuilding job ahead of him.
Garcia, 32, said: “He was just the better man tonight. No excuses.
“I fought a hard, tough fight. He had a difficult jab and I think that was the key to the fight.

Spence will now eye a welterweight unification Credit: Getty Images – Getty
“I didn’t have a great jab. He had a great jab and that was the difference in the fight. He landed it better than me.”
For Spence, he now eyes a unification showdown between either WBO king Terence Crawford or Manny Pacquiao, who owns the WBA belt.
But first, he will attend to the chickens and horses at his newly acquired ranch as he promised the best it yet to come from him.
Spence explained: “This was a comeback fight for me and I will definitely be 120 per cent in my next fight.
“I’m going to chill on my ranch. I just bought a ranch with a couple of horses and chickens, two cows and my children and family.
“I want to go and get more horses and chickens.
“I want to enjoy my time and decide who to come back against but right now I want my rest time.”

Anthony Yarde stunned as Lyndon Arthur edges out British light-heavyweight fight on split-decision

LYNDON ARTHUR left Anthony Yarde stunned as he emerged victorious in their domestic light-heavyweight fight by split-decision.
The cagey and tactical affair went right down to the wire with only a single point separating the pair.

Arthur bossed the opening stages with his classy and expertly timed jab, which left Yarde struggling to close the gap.
The bookies’ pre-fight favourite upped his product down the stretch but eventually left it too little too late.
After the win, Arthur, 29 said: “I thought it was close.
“If the points would’ve went on his side, I wouldn’t have said, ‘That was a robbery’.

“But it went to me, so I’m not going to say that either.”
Yarde, 29, responded: “I’ll be honest with you. Lyndon’s not out here lying to nobody. There were parts where it was a bit close.
“But if you look at who landed the clean, effective punches – the punches he landed were jabs, I landed my own jabs.
“This is boxing, you’re not going to go out there and be reckless.

“From what I know that happened in the ring, I landed cleaner, I was pressing the whole fight.

Yarde left it too little too late Credit: Getty Images – Getty

“This sums up 2020 for me anyway, I’ll go back and watch the fight, congratulations bro, it’s Lions In The Camp, I’ve got a strong mentality.
“I personally and strongly feel that was a robbery. I’ll be honest, I don’t like to scream the word robbery but I feel like I won the fight.”
The opening round provided little action with more feints than punches thrown.
Arthur then established his jab in rounds two and three, and despite Yarde walking forward, he failed to let his hands go.
In the fourth, Yarde finally found home with his right hand, but did not follow up, as his opponent sat back and avoided further damage.
Arthur got back to his jab in round five to bring the pace of the fight down to a level that suited him.

Yarde landed his first big right hand in round four Credit: Reuters
Starting to sense he needed to make his mark, Yarde came out fast in the sixth and again landed with a right hand over the top.
It proved enough to win the round, but nothing else of note landed.
Yarde kept up the pressure going into the second half of the fight, touching Arthur with the odd jab and right to the body.
But Arthur’s superior jab thrown from the hip was the more eye-catching punch.
In round eight, for the first time in the bout, Manchester’s Commonwealth champion finally threw, and landed, his right hand.
Yarde responded by walking forward, picking up the tempo but was just short with his own rear hand.
He kept up the pressure in the ninth and tenth, but Arthur’s jab was again finding home, making the action hard to score.

As the final bell sounded both men came out believing they had to win it to seal the dealCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Yarde ended the round and fight on topCredit: Getty Images – Getty
In the 11th round, Yarde managed to close the distance, landing short body shots, but he took a right hand for his troubles.
As the Londoner got on the inside, he almost landed with a combination but his work was just smothered by Arthur.
As the final bell sounded both men came out believing they had to win it to seal the deal.
And Yarde came ever so close – like was the case against Sergey Kovalev last year – to closing the show in dramatic fashion.
He rocked Arthur with a chopping right hand as they came out of a clinch, but could not find the finishing blow.
Yarde ended the round and fight on top – but the judges’ divided verdict proved it was left too late.
Arthur offered his rival his respect and a rematch, something promoter Frank Warren plans to follow up with. More

    ROUND SEVEN
Yarde finally lands a jab and then a right hand to the body and a double jab.
Arthur has either taken a round off or Yarde has finally round his feet.
Yarde could not evade the Kovalev jab and now he can’t duck Arthur’s.

    ROUND SIX
Six deep now and Yarde still cannot defend the jab that is flying up from Arthur’s waist.
This is so similar to Joyce vs Dubois last week.
Yarde lands with his first decent right hand but Arthur’s chin passes the test.

    ROUND FIVE
Yarde throws a few right hands that get past Arthur’s guard but barely graze his shaved head.

    ROUND FOUR
Yarde finally lands a right hand that gets his people inside the room excited.
But Arthur’s jab remains a pest of a weapon every time it finds Yarde’s nose.
Both men end the session smiling as Yarde deflects an Arthur right hand with his shoulder.

    ROUND THREE
Arthur scores a hat-trick with a double jab that Yarde failed to defend.
And the rocks the Londoner’s head back with the stiffest one of the night.
Yarde is looking for power shots because he left arm is too short to land jabs.

    ROUND TWO
Arthur scored with another jab and the right hand Yarde threw was caught on the Manchester man’s arms.
Arthur dodged another left hook and then scored with another jab.
Arthur’s friends and family were in the crowd making it very awkward for Yarde.

    ROUND ONE
Arthur earned the super-cautious opener with a handful of jabs.
Flyweight Sunny Edwards was up in the balcony guiding Arthur through every moment and even taunting Yarde.

    KING ARTHUR ARRIVES
Lyndon keeps Yarde waiting with a long and slow ringwalk.
If Arthur can survive the first few rounds, when Yarde is explosive and hungry, he could take control down the back.
Will Yarde be able to take away his height and reach advantages?

AJ tells Tyson Fury he can make him into a star with ‘right management’ and sees ‘a lot of potential’ in Brit rival

ANTHONY JOSHUA has told Tyson Fury the only way he will become a global megastar like him is to let AJ be his boss!
Following the magnificent February Las Vegas win over Deontay Wilder, the Gypsy King’s stock was sky high and his daily lockdown Instagram workouts were a smash hit.

So in March, when it was revealed the Englishman men had agreed terms on a 2021 two-fight deal, AJ even had to agree to a 50-50 split.
But, after demanding a knock-over opponent on his usual mega-money, Fury’s UK and US broadcasters were turned off and his December 5 UK comeback was embarrassingly binned.
And the Watford icon, whose Saturday defence against Kubrat Pulev survived an £8m hit after Covid forced it from a packed Tottenham stadium into an almost empty Wembley Arena, has told his rival he needs to jump ship to stay afloat.

Ahead of the 1,000-fan and £24.95 pay-per-view show, the unified heavyweight champ and boss of 258 management teased: “He has had a tough career, ups and downs, opponents not fulfilling their commitments, contracts not being fulfilled.

“I do think he should come over to Matchroom and 258 Management and let us handle his career.
“He’s a superstar in the making. With the right management he could go all the way.
“I see a lot of potential in Tyson, with the right management he could go far, so when he’s ready he can come over and we can get our fight underway.”
Fury’s incredible comeback from a doping ban, a mental health breakdown and a 10st blow-up rightly earned him a nomination for the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year award.

But he bizarrely demanded the BBC removed him from the shortlist and urged his social media followers not to vote in the annual popularity contest.
And AJ, grinning like a Cheshire cat on a Zoom call, continued to playfully patronise him over his latest PR blunder.

We’ll have a look at his PR, strip it back and make this fight what it’s supposed to be… he should come and see us and we’ll get him on the right track.

He said: “That video he did should be him saying, ‘I’m accepting my award’, not ’I don’t want to be a part of it’”
“We’ll have a look at his PR, we’ll strip it all back and make this fight what it’s supposed to be. He’s got a lot of potential
“I wish him all the best, he should come and see us and we’ll get him on the right track.”
Joshua and young son JJ have been on the right track throughout lockdown, tearing around the local woods on brand new quad bikes.
Tommy Coyle achieved his boyhood dream of boxing at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of AJ’s defeat to Andy Ruiz last year.
And the Hull hero has clearly never forgotten the gesture so sent some serious wheels down south for the Joshua boys to enjoy now the 31-year-old dedicated daddy claims to be too old to party.
When asked how he will celebrate the end of the second lockdown, the 2012 Olympic icon said: “I’m not interested in partying anymore. I’m more dedicated than ever now.
“I’m older, wiser, I haven’t been boxing so long, so over these last 12 years of my career I’ve had to do a lot of maturing, a lot of learning about what it means to be a fighter, what it means to be heavyweight champion, the responsibilities of being a champion.

“Before I was just happy go lucky, going through this boxing industry with a smile on my face, but now I really understand the discipline and the downfalls of the sport.
“We’ve been going on walks down to the woods. My mate comes over with his dog and his son.
“Tommy Coyle did a nice thing, he bought my son two little electric quad bikes, it was really nice of him, so we take them down to the woods.
“What’s nice is I’ve been out enjoying nature and little things, going on walks, so that’s been a blessing.”
Pulev has been the IBF’s mandatory challenger for AJ for three years and has been piping up plenty about Joshua’s supposed weaknesses. So the Brit cannot wait to land on his 39-year-old Bulgarian chin.
The powerhouse growled: “You’re going to have to ask Pulev how he feels but I’m sure after my loss everybody says, ‘Oh, we’re going to exploit Anthony Joshua’s weaknesses’ and all this nonsense.
“So we’ll see how confident he is until the first jab or right hand smashes him in the jaw.”

Joshua added a couple of new coaches to his team for the impressive Ruiz revenge mission and some of Joby Clayton’s unorthodox ideas are a hit on social media.
But one Saudi win is still not enough to convince AJ to ditch meat or his Under Armour trainers.
“I’m still not going vegan,” he laughed. “And I’m not going running barefoot!”
