Ricky Hatton claims he was cheated after Floyd Mayweather defeat in 2007 and ‘smelt a rat’ in referee Joe Cortez

RICKY HATTON “felt cheated” after losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and said he “smelt a rat” in referee Joe Cortez.
Hatton was knocked out in round ten by then welterweight champion Mayweather in Las Vegas.

Ricky Hatton ‘felt cheated’ after losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2007

Hatton said he ‘smelt a rat’ in referee Joe Cortez

But the fearsome body puncher was unable to work on the inside – like he did to beat Kostya Tszyu two years prior – with Cortez keen to break up the pair.
To this day Hatton believes his opponent was helped by the official, who had a history of letting fighters trade up close.
And he used former opponents Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana – who Mayweather beat easier in rematches – to suggest the unbeaten legend struggled against inside fighters.
Hatton told BT Sports: “I did give him a good run for his money.

“I feel a little bit cheated to be honest with you, because I felt that I wasn’t going to outbox him and I wasn’t going to out-speed him, but if I was allowed to get close I would definitely throw more punches than him.

I smelt a rat that night with the referee and I don’t think I was given a fair crack of the whip.
    Hatton on referee Cortez

“I never got the opportunity and that’s the thing that will always eat away at me – the referee never gave me the opportunity.
“The one person that was allowed to get stuck in and bully him and was allowed to fight close was Marcos Maidana and he pushed him really close.
“Castillo was allowed to get close and a lot of people thought Castillo won, so I smelt a rat that night with the referee and I don’t think I was given a fair crack of the whip.”

After the loss Hatton would go on to hire Mayweather’s dad, Floyd Sr, winning twice.
But following a devastating second round KO defeat to Manny Pacquiao, the Manchester hero spent three years out of the ring before losing his comeback to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012.
He then retired and has since become a successful coach – but in reflection he feels the performance he put in against Tszyu in 2005 would have been enough to beat Mayweather.

Hatton told Sky Sports: “Against Kostya Tszyu, with a referee who let the fight flow at a distance and up close, I would have beaten anyone that night, including Floyd.
“I’m not saying I was a better fighter than Floyd. But the right tactics on the right night at the right time? Even the best can be beaten.
“If I fought him on that night, I think I might have beaten him.”

Lyndon Arthur WILL give Anthony Yarde rematch next year – but only ‘if money is right’ after pulling off stunning upset

LYNDON ARTHUR will happily hand Anthony Yarde a fan-filled 2021 rematch – as long as he gets the A-side pay and respect he deserves.
The 29-year-old arrived at Church House, Westminster, as the Commonwealth champion but 9-2 underdog, with heavy favourite Yarde the challenger.

But the Manchester star had to fight for his right to enter the ring second, as champ, and even his entrance music was messed around with.
After jabbing underwhelming Yarde to a split decision loss – that should have been a wider unanimous score – he said: “I’m happy to do the rematch, if the money is right.
“But I will be pushing the fact that I am the A-side now.

SunSport’s pound for pound top ten
“I have handled being the B-side for long enough now.

“They even tried to make me walk second here and we only got it changed last minute.
“They also kept cutting my music off too, I won’t be standing for none of that next time.”
The 6ft 2in light-heavyweight ace had super-fly friend Sunny Edwards to thank for some of his success.
The pair are tight pals from their time together on Team GB and ringside Edwards spent the whole fight cheering and advising Arthur, while criticising Yarde loudly and clearly.

But the 5ft 3in boxing brain will not be getting a big cut of King Arthur’s purse not matter how handy his verbals were.

Arthur joked: “Sunny doesn’t need any of my money, he has plenty of that already, belts too.
“I could hear him all the way through the fight, he even made me laugh a few times, which my trainer told me off about.
“We go back a long way, we speak every day and it was nice to share this win with him.”

Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev: UK start time, date, live stream, TV channel, undercard for HUGE world title bout

BOXING gets even bigger this year as Anthony Joshua prepares to take on Kubrat Pulev in a huge heavyweight clash in front of 1,000 fans at Wembley Arena.
Joshua will be defending his WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles against the Bulgarian, who he was first scheduled to face over three years ago.

How the fighters compare ahead of their heavyweight bout

The fight is a big one for Joshua, who can all but secure a money-spinning pair of bouts with Tyson Fury with an emphatic win.
When is Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev?
The fight is scheduled to take place on December 12.
It was originally scheduled for June 20 but the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to those plans.
What time does Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev start?
Fight night will likely get underway at around 5pm with some undercard bouts live on Facebook.
Joshua vs Pulev can be expected to start at around 10.30pm UK time on December 12.

What channel is it on and can it believe streamed?
Joshua vs Pulev will be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office.
The price of the pay-per-view has been set at £24.95, which is more than usual for a PPV event.
The event can be live streamed from the Sky Sports Box Office app, which you can download onto your mobile or tablet device.
    What has been said?
“I have been watching his fights carefully. He has a good style and he is a good specimen, but he has not shown any mental toughness,” Pulev said.
“Yes, he has skills, but he hasn’t shown the mental strength. This is something from within, in the blood of a man, and he does not have it.
“Whatever mental toughness he’s got, I know I’m the harder person. This is the difference – my toughness will prevail.”

But Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said his man will do the business on fight night.
“I went to see him yesterday, he looked absolutely sensational,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“He’s learning, he’s punching so hard, so sharp, so fast. I think this is going to be a tough fight against Kubrat Pulev. I also think he is going to absolutely destroy him.
“I think he’s going to break him down, he’s going to dissect him, and he’s going to punish him. I think you’re going to see a statement.

LENNOX LEWIS turned heads at Errol Spence’s win over Danny Garcia by wearing an incredible suit lined with pictures of his Olympic gold medal win in 1988.

Lewis won gold for Canada at the 1988 Games in Seoul

Spence saw off Garcia on points in his first fight since a life-threatening car crash over a year ago.
And the result saw him move to 27-0 while retaining his WBC and IBF welterweight titles.
But Lewis was hard to miss from the sides as he showed off the inner lining of his shimmering suit.
The London-born giant won Olympic gold at the Seoul Games for Cananda.

And his suit was decorated with pictures showing the historic moment he defeated Riddick Bowe before turning professional.
Lewis recently excited boxing fans by admitting he could stage a comeback fight – just like old foe Mike Tyson, who drew with Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition last week.
Lewis, who won 41 of his 44 fights, told BT Sport: “Sure! I mean, it seems like a lot of fun.
“When I was commentating for HBO, they had me put in there right in the action.

“It was maybe to make me feel like I could come back for HBO but I just never caught it, it never happened.
“I looked at the history of why boxers come back and most boxers come back because they have nothing else to do.

Lewis admits he could be tempted to the ring for a comeback fightCredit: Rex Features

“People keep coming up to them and saying, ‘Hey, when is your next fight? Who are you going to fight?’
“But it doesn’t do better for them, it makes them look bad. So I always elected to stay away from that.
“But, if it is right, I may come back. There has been talk of Riddick Bowe wants to fight me still so there is still some unfinished business there.”
Lewis and Bowe were long connected with a fight in the pro ranks but it never got made.

Cristiano Ronaldo naps five times a day and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s snoozes for four… how much sports stars sleep

BEING one of the most well known sporting icons on the planet is tiring work.
But rather than sleep all night, Cristiano Ronaldo instead takes FIVE naps a day while Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson snoozes for just four hours to keep himself going.

    Cristiano Ronaldo takes FIVE naps-a-day

Earlier this month, it emerged Juventus superstar Ronaldo, 35, grabs 40 winks five times each day and sleeps in the foetal position.
And here SunSport can reveal the different sleep patterns of several other sporting icons from across the globe and how many hours of ‘Zzz’ time they get, according to Online Mattress Review.

The WWE icon turned movie star hits the sack for just four hours-a-night.
At 48, Hawaiian born Johnson clocks off between midnight and is up and about again at 4am.

Presumably to work out at least 25 times a day to maintain his impressive physique.
    Muhammad Ali – 6.5 hours

Muhammad Ali was a religious man and slept for 6.5 hours after dinner and prayers

The greatest boxer of all time put many opponents to sleep in his time and would wind down between 10pm and 4:30am.
As a devout Muslim, much of his time would be split between prayer and training.
And his evening routine would include a walk after dinner, a quick wash, prayers and short stint in front of the TV before he dozed off.

    Serena Williams – 7 hours

Serena Williams clocks up a solid seven hours of sleep after socialising and work
You do not need hawk eye to tell when Serena is out for the count but we can neither confirm or deny whether her snoring makes a racket.
The tennis sensation takes a solid seven hour sleep between midnight and 7am each day after a post-dinner routine of socialising and work.
The 38-year-old former world number one is also a mum of a young daughter so her slumbers are no doubt interrupted by the littl’un every now and then.

    Cristiano Ronaldo – 7.5 hours

Ronaldo sleeps in the fetal position to stay in top shape aged 35

Ronaldo has perhaps the oddest routine of all the big stars.
Rather than one lump of rest at the end of each day like most of us, Ronnie reportedly prefers to take short naps of an hour-and-a-half each time throughout the day.
After dinner, he relaxes with his friends before a swim at 10pm.
He then takes one of his signature naps until midnight and relaxes until another short burst of sleep from around 3am before waking up for the day.
    Ronda Rousey – 8 hours

MMA star Rousey does not mess around when it comes to getting the right amount of rest

MMA and WWE star Rousey’s routine seems pretty standard.
Eight hours between midnight and 8am.
    Nice and simple.
    Tiger Woods – 8.5 hours

Tiger Woods – perhaps the greatest golfer in history – spends more than a third of his day asleep

Woods is generally considered the best golfer of all time.
And to maintain such high levels, the superstar spends eight and a half hours dreaming of sinking putts and splitting fairways.
He snoozes from 10pm to 6:30am – proving the early birdie really does catch the worm.
    Tom Brady – 9 hours

Tom Brady is widely considered the best quarter-back ever to play American Football and he does not compromise when it comes to rest

Like Woods, Brady is considered the greatest ever in his field.
The former New England Patriots quarter-back is revered in across the world for his sustained and unrivalled talent.
And the 42-year-old – who is still playing for the Tampa Bay Bucacaneers – makes sure he touches down to sleep for nine hours each day between 8:30pm and 5:30am.

    Stephen Curry – 9 hours

NBA star Stephen Curry is one of the longest sleepers on the list with a solid nine hours

Basketball star Stephen Curry is another record breaker who is set to go down in the NBA history books.
The Golden State Warriors point guard is another who does not take rest lightly – opting to hit the hay for nine hours between 11pm and 8am every day.
