John Fury vs Mike Tyson tale of the tape: How pair compare as world champ’s dad, 56, speaks on fight versus Iron Mike

JOHN FURY revealed he would ‘like to have a go’ at fighting heavyweight legend Mike Tyson.
Tyson returned to the ring for the first time since 2005 at the end of November as he boxed to a draw against Roy Jones Jr.

How Mike Tyson and John Fury match up

It caught the eye of Tyson Fury’s dad John – who called to face Iron Mike.
He said earlier in the year: “Listen, I’d like to have a go. You know, at the end of the day, I named my son after him, it would be a good thing.
“But I know one thing, he’ll be in no better shape than me.
“I tell you what it is, I’ve got the edge in shape because I’ve lived better, I’ve lived cleaner.”

Here SunSport takes a look at how the pair match up despite the call out being nothing more than a fantasy fight.
    Mike Tyson
Tyson’s career as a prizefighter looked over when he retired after two dismal defeats.
But this year he made the stunning announcement that he wanted to make a comeback to raise money in exhibition bouts.
He started off by going eight rounds with Jones – 17 years after they first held talks to fight – in what proved a box office hit, with over 1million pay-per-view buys.

Despite the action providing more clinching than punching, the reduced two-minute rounds suited Tyson.
He kept a good pace and landed some nice body shots, but either refrained or failed to land any of his signature finishing hooks and uppercuts.
Afterwards, Tyson revealed he wanted to make fighting for fun a regular thing.

    John Fury
Fury comes from a long lineage of bare-knuckle fighters, owing to his Irish traveller roots.
But his pro career spanned over eight years, beginning in April 1987 and ending in June 1995.
In total, Fury had 13 bouts, retiring with a record of 8-4-1.
But even during his time in the pro ranks, he still fought bare-knuckle and claims to have won £100,000 after one of his wins.
After his fighting career ended, he focussed on becoming a trainer and has cornered both Tyson and his other son Tommy.
John regularly trains with them both and keeps up the pace on long jogs.

    Fight breakdown
With limited footage on Fury’s career as a fighter it is hard to make any judgement on his skill.
He claims to be in better shape than Iron Mike, but again the evidence is lacking, despite a few clips son Tyson uploaded which revealed John can pack a punch on the heavy bag.
For 54-year-old Tyson, his effort against Jones went some way to prove that he still has plenty of fight left in him.
His trademark head movement and quick footwork was on display, albeit it not so ferociously.
Tyson looked to be making his greatest mark fighting on the inside, instead of throwing hayemakers at range.
Anyone, including Fury, lined up to face the veteran puncher can expect the action to be fought on the inside.
And his right hand – formerly his greatest threat – appeared not so dangerous 15 years on.
But the exhibition rules Tyson signed up for prohibited KOs – meaning he could be one overcooked punch away from closing out the show.

The owner of the platform has revealed that the event received over 1.6m pay-per-view buys.

Tyson, 54, came out of retirement to take on Roy Jones Jr, 51, in an exhibition bout last month.
The highly-anticipated bout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles ended as a draw.
BT Sport Box Office showed the fight in the UK for a price of £19.95.
Social media site Triller aired the pay-per-view fight for a cost of $50 (£37) in the US.

According to RT, Triller stand to make £60m as over 1.6m fans tuned in to watch it.
Owner Ryan Kavanaugh hit out at the critics that had slated his site – which has over 100 million monthly users – before the fight.
He told BoxingScene: “Despite everyone wanting for it not to work, we upset them by changing things up and making it work and dominated the conversation.”
Tyson is reportedly set to pocket a huge £7.5m from his comeback fight.

The 54-year-old is estimated to have accrued over $300m (£224m) throughout his boxing career, but ended up losing it all.
Forbes claim his total career earnings could even have been as high as $685m (£513m).
It has been revealed that in the US alone Tyson’s fight against Jones Jr sold more than 1.2m pay-per-views.

Martin Bakole is Congo royalty fighting to dethrone Anthony Joshua as heavyweight king – via Scotland

MARTIN BAKOLE ILUNGA is the African prince fighting to dethrone heavyweight king and friend Anthony Joshua.
The son of the ruler of the Kananga province in the Congo has boxing and Irn Bru running through his royal blood after moving to Scotland to chase his dreams.

When big brother Ilunga Makabu came to Goodison Park in 2016 to take on Tony Bellew, Bakole came along and stayed in the UK before quickly becoming AJ’s favourite sparring partner.
Now based in Aidrie, the softly spoken 6ft 6in star has a 15-1 record and has been the go-to-guy for hard rounds when Joshua prepared for Carlos Takam, Alexander Povetkin and most recently Kubrat Pulev.
This Saturday he shares the bill with AJ – who defends his titles against Pulev – as Bakole faces Sergey Kuzmin on the undercard.

As the heavyweight’s career hotted up his fearsome reputation and lack of home-city support provided a bad blend for his early career, which made finding fights hard to get.
As a result, Michael Hunter was flown in from LA in 2018 and caused the upset, to hand Bakole his first ever loss.
But, Channel 5 showed the fight and the terrestrial screening gave millions the chance to be glued to their screens back in Africa to support their travelling brother.
Bakole said at the time: “Channel 5 work with Star Times, a big TV company in Africa so all my fans in the Congo get to see me fight.

“I know when I am on live TV everyone is watching me at home, in cafes and bars.

Bakole will fight Sergey Kuzmin on Saturday

“They all make plans and meet up to watch the fight together and when I get to go home they treat me like a king.
“It gives me so much extra motivation to do well for my family and for them.”
Despite Hunter bringing an end to Bakole’s unbeaten run in ten rounds, the 27-year-old proved mentally and physically tough enough to bounce back.
He has won four on the spin since and earned himself a deal with Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
And despite the loss, AJ still invited Bakole back to his Sheffield training base for regular sparring sessions.
The battling pair have swapped numbers and they are friends outside the ring.
But it is an unspoken fact that AJ – who is of Nigerian heritage – has three of the four major belts that Bakole has his eyes on.

Joshua and Bakole shared Whatsapp messages togetherCredit: @martin_bakole_
And Bakole knows how quickly the practice sessions could turn into a title clash, as he dreams of bringing a mega-fight to Africa.
He told Sky Sports: “One hundred percent, of course. It would be a big show, not only for Africa, but for the whole world.
“Imagine if Joshua fought in Nigeria or my home in Congo.
“We have really good sparring. A lot of people avoid sparring me so when he gives me the chance, I always go.
“You can’t go into a fight without good sparring. I go to Joshua not with the attitude of a sparring partner – I go for myself.
“I have a very good relationship with Joshua. He is my best friend, we joke on WhatsApp.”
Bakole has also gained vital experience in the gym with the likes of Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce as well as Tyson and Hughie Fury.

Daniel Dubois pictured after sparring with BakoleCredit: @martin_bakole_
But his trainer Billy Nelson fears the performances in the gym could end up scaring off the competition long-term.
He explained:”Martin is the most avoided heavyweight on the planet.
“He hasn’t even shown 75 per cent of what he’s really got.
“Boxers are intelligent. They know. When Martin out-skills somebody in sparring they go home and think: ‘Why would I fight Bakole wearing 10oz gloves when he hurt, cut or wobbled me wearing 20oz gloves?'”
But Bakole will get his chance to shine when he provides undercard action for Joshua.
Kuzmin has lost just once – to Hunter last year – and made his mark in London in 2018 as he stopped Liverpool’s David Price.
The Russian is ranked 13th in the WBA – meaning Bakole has the chance to inherit his spot with a win.

Tommy Fury wouldn’t be where he is now without brother Tyson or Love Island, slams fellow reality TV star Idris Virgo

IDRIS VIRGO has accused Tommy Fury of succeeding in boxing only because of his world champion brother and Love Island stint.
Fury turned pro in 2018 with much fanfare due to the career of his big brother Tyson, now the unbeaten WBC heavyweight king.

And his popularity was only heightened the following summer as he came runner up in the hit reality TV series Love Island with his girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague.
As a result, 21-year-old Fury is in-demand and made a successful return to the ring last month winning by second round stoppage.
But his promised dedication to the sport has not convinced fellow Love Island alumni Virgo – who spent time in the villa a year beforehand.
Virgo, 27, told SunSport: “It’s all for the press and all for the camera. I don’t believe Tommy Fury actually wants to box. He does not wanna box.

“I believe Tommy Fury will get found out. And if he can get found out by me, I’ll be there saying ‘I’ll told you so’.
“I don’t think he really wants to do it to be honest, I don’t think his heart is really in it.
“He’s got all it needs to be a decent boxer but he hasn’t got the dedication, no way. I’ve never met the guy but even if I did I’d say it to his face.
“He’s not even worth watching, that’s my personal opinion.

Super-middleweight Virgo is 7-0 in his career Credit: Hennessy Sports

“If Love Island wasn’t there and he didn’t have his brother, he wouldn’t be where he is now.
“I think because of the Fury name he is trying to follow his brother. I don’t think he’ll go far, that’s my personal opinion.”
Virgo, from Birmingham, came into Love Island having won his first two pro bouts, but boxed as an amateur and on the White Collar scene.
Since making his name on the ITV series, he also enjoyed screen time on MTV’s ‘The Challenge’ filmed in America.
It caught the eye of promoter Mick Hennessy, who signed Virgo this summer.
In August, the super-middleweight went viral and was hailed for a perfectly timed body shot knockout against Josh Hodgins.
But just a month later, Virgo was public enemy No1 after he threw water in the face of his journeyman opponent Scott Williams.

The contrasting headlines proved a lesson in how quickly credit can be lost and perception drastically changed.
But Virgo refuses to apologise for the lack of respect he showed pre-fight, insisting he is in the business of entertainment and brutality.
He explained: “It’s just how I am. You’ll hate me but at the end of the day you’ll watch me.
“I hate every fighter who steps in the ring with me. There’s no love – I’ve been in Love Island but in the ring there is no love.
“Doesn’t matter whoever you are, I don’t want to be shaking your hand, I don’t want to be joking with you, you’re the enemy going into that fight.
“And, if you’re sound, I might give you a pat on the back and praise you – other than that I hate you.
“It’s just the mindset I have, before it was different but now it’s totally different. I’ve trained my mind to be a killer.

Virgo boxed as an amateur and on the White Collar scene before Love IslandCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“I’m an entertainer, it’s just who I am, I’m not putting it on for anyone.”
Virgo returns to the ring on Friday for his eighth fight, on the same night British veteran Ashley Theophane marks his UK homecoming against Sam Eggington.
The social media personality has already got his next fight lined up one week later.
And he admits he has no shortage of potential rivals, all looking to steal the clout from his name.
Virgo said: “Next year is going to be a bigger year but what people don’t realise is every fight I’ve been in has been decent due to my name.
“My name alone brings enough weight for people to train hard enough to try and beat me but when you’re in the ring with me, from the first round they feel my power and start backing off and retreating.
“Due to my name they come to dethrone me, but it’s not going to work.”

Inside Anthony Joshua’s North London life, from living in a two-bed council estate to finding boxing at Finchley ABC

HE might’ve grown up in Watford, but as Anthony Joshua reveals in an ad for Google – it’s Golders Green that gets “much love”.
The heavyweight champion, fighting against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev on December 12 in his first fight on UK soil for two years, considers North London his home – after all, it’s where he discovered boxing.

When Joshua, 31, was a teen he walked into Finchley Amateur Boxing Club, who set him on his way to world stardom.
He also bought his mum Yeta Odusanya an ex-council home for £175,000 in the area, which he’s certainly no stranger to, visiting whenever he has a break from his action-packed schedule.
Then there’s local businesses, his favourite restaurant, coffee shop, and launderette that can all count on Joshua’s custom over the years.
In this case, you can’t take North London out of the boy…

    LEARNING HIS TRADE
At 18 Anthony Joshua strolled into Finchley ABC gym in Barnet.
He met his first trainer Sean Murphy, which changed his life forever and stopped him turning to a life of crime.
“I was f***** before boxing,” Joshua revealed.
“That was my reckless days when I was smoking. Boxing really helped me get on the straight and narrow.

“It was at my first boxing club where I learned discipline. How to forget your ego and listen to instructions if you want to achieve things.

“Sean would say, ‘Shut up, get on the bags, stop talking’. He told me to stay focused.
“These guys will always have their door open for me, no matter what. I’ll never forget who has been there when no one was.”
After his shock loss to Andy Ruiz Jr, Joshua returned to Boxing ABC where he trained to regain focus and sharpness ahead of the rematch he would go on to win.
    ANYTHING FOR MUM
Joshua’s mum Yeta is a huge influence on the boxer’s life, encouraging him to be modest with his £107million fortune.
He has always put her first, ensuring she is looked after – as was evident after his 2012 Olympic heroics.
Joshua bought her a two-bed, ex-council flat in Golders Green for £175,000, where he spent some of his teenage years.
There were even reports he moved back in with her in 2017 after he defeated Wladimir Klitschko and added the WBA and IBO heavyweight titles to his IBF belt.

Joshua has always had a close bond with his mum Yeta Odusanya

After his 2012 Olympic success Joshua bought his mum a £175,000 ex-council house

Joshua has made an astonishing £107m during his career
However, in 2017 he reportedly bought a six bedroom home 15 minutes drive from his mum’s home.
    A CHAMPION FOR LOCAL BUSINESS
Although he’s one of the most bankable stars in sport, as well one of the most successful, Joshua keeps it real by supporting local businesses.
As he tells us in the ‘Dear Local’ campaign for Google that’s doing the rounds at the moment, “There’s no place like Golders Green”.
Joshua has regularly used a North London launderette, once bringing up a £120 debt he owed to shop owner Max Bakhtari in a press conference.
Then, there’s his favourite restaurant that serves Nigerian cuisine called Enish on the Finchley Road.
Favourites on the menu include stewed beef and goat meat, all served with rice and veg.

Then there’s cafe Piacere, where Joshua is shown grabbing a smoothie from.
“Sometimes he still comes to order and pick up food,” owner Mahdis Talaee told Times – a local newspaper for Hendon, Finchley, Barnet, Potters Bar, Edgware, and Mill Hill.
“Usually he orders a jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise – that is his favourite food – he also sometimes gets a smoothie.”

Mike Tyson snubs Anthony Joshua as he names top five favourite current boxers featuring Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder

ANTHONY JOSHUA is the reigning WBF, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight world champion… but it appears that he is not one of boxing legend Mike Tyson’s five favourite fighters.
The 54-year-old was heavyweight king during his 1990s pomp and returned to the ring after 15 years in November, drawing with Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition bout.

Mike Tyson didn’t include AJ as one of his five favourite fighters

But Brit hero AJ doesn’t appear to excite him in the way that others do, including compatriot Tyson Fury and former WBC champ Deontay Wilder.
And there was even a mention for pudgy Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr, the man that Joshua, 31, defeated in Riyadh in December 2019, ahead of AJ himself.
Tyson said on his show Hotboxin’: “I respect Tyson Fury, I respect Deontay Wilder, I respect all of those guys.
“Andy Ruiz also, this guy named [Vasyl] Lomachenko – he’s a f***ing animal, man. He’s a master, it’s like he’s dancing.

‘There’s also Gervonta Davis, there’s quite a few guys that are good fighters.”
The Baddest Man on the Planet also bemoaned what he sees as the ‘political’ nature of pro boxing in 2020, expressing his eagerness to see the biggest matchups in the sport happen.
He continued: “The situation is whether they will fight each other. Promoters are not allowing them to fight each other. I’d love to see them fight each other but the promoters don’t want to do it.
‘It [boxing] is very political now. That’s why I think in the next couple months or so you’re going to find that there are some new players in the game and it’s going to get really serious.”

I don’t know. My ego says, ‘nobody would beat you’ – but you look at him and… he just looks beautiful.
    Mike Tyson on Anthony Joshua

Tyson did have praise for Joshua when asked about him earlier this year, however.
He said: “He’s really clean, he really looks clean, he’s a clean guy, he’s a clean fighter, he’s a good puncher.
“You just wish the best for him.
“I don’t know. My ego says, ‘nobody would beat you’ – but you look at him and… he just looks beautiful.
“He just looks like a fighter, you know? He looks like he was born to do what he has to do. He needs more experience of course, but that will come in life.”

Tyson’s comeback reeled in an incredible £60million for Triller with over 1.6million pay-per-view buys.
Iron Mike could fight again with a trilogy bout with Evander Holyfield ‘going to happen’ according to the 58-year-old and even John Fury being rumoured as an opponent.

Anthony Joshua reveals he would ‘love to go back and fight Andy Ruiz Jr again’ and KO rival after toughening up

ANTHONY JOSHUA revealed he would love to fight Andy Ruiz Jr again – because he wants to knock him out.
Joshua suffered a catastrophic first ever defeat in June 2019 as he was dropped four times and beaten in round seven against Ruiz.

But six months later, with his career on the line, AJ outboxed his rival over 12 rounds to win back the unified titles.
Joshua admits he toughened up mentally after the upset loss and would be equipped to close the show against Ruiz instead of winning on points.
He told BBC Sport: “I got straight back into training and I went back to learning.
“It wasn’t training to get fit, it was more the mistakes I knew I was making, the mistakes my training team have identified and I went straight into the learning phase again.

“I learned about the mental aspect as well of the game, so I got tough and unfortunately it led to a performance where I had to stick and move.
“Because I didn’t want to be labelled a ‘quitter’ or a ‘loser’ or someone that’s not meant to be part of the heavyweight dynasty that we’re in now.

I’d love to go back and fight Ruiz again, because rematch or no rematch, I’ll knock him out.
Anthony Joshua on Andy Ruiz Jr

“Yeah, I felt that pressure, but looking back, I’d love to go back and fight Ruiz again, because rematch or no rematch, I’ll knock him out.
“Because, I’ve become tougher, more relentless over the last year.

“And that fight – going back on Saturday with Dubois and Joyce – showed me how relentless and how tough you have to be in this business.”
Joshua, 31, was accused of giving up against Ruiz, also 31, on his disastrous US debut but bounced back to reclaim his heavyweight throne.
Former sparring partner Daniel Dubois will now have to find similar inspiration, as he was branded a ‘quitter’ following his loss to Joe Joyce.
That is despite suffering an orbital fracture in his left eye, which caused Dubois to take a knee and surrender to defeat.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, Joshua offered his support to the 23-year-old prospect.

But while speaking to Mike Costello and Steve Bunce ahead of his next fight against Kubrat Pulev, AJ admits he would now rather ‘go out on his shield’ than face questions over his heart again.
He said: “There is that question of, ‘I would have gone out on my shield. I would have done this, I would have done that’.
“And I realised, I would have to be in that position to know what would happen.
“But, what I have learned from that situation is the man I am right now, sitting here, I think I’d prefer to go out on my shield.
“Because of what I’ve learned, the industry I’m in, this is an industry of uncivilized people.
“This isn’t just about knocking everyone over, relying on punch power, you have to rely on heart, good chin, work rate, skills, determination, willing to die.”

Conor McGregor ‘on another level’, claims UFC star’s manager as he aims dig at Floyd Mayweather over Logan Paul fight

CONOR McGREGOR is ‘on another level’ heading into his UFC return against Dustin Poirier.
That is according to his manager Audi Attar, who aimed a dig at Floyd Mayweather fighting Logan Paul.

McGregor is preparing to mark his comeback next month as he rematches Poirier – who he beat in 2014 – in a lightweight headliner.
And Attar promised the Irishman, 32, is mentally and physically better than ever before.
He told The National: “This is the best Conor I’ve seen ever, and I’ve been with him almost a decade now.
“It’s the mental fortitude, the emotional intelligence, the self-awareness, the time he’s spending with his kids in between sessions and what that does to him.

“It’s the reflection of everything that’s happened to us to date – the good, the bad and the ugly – having a level of wherewithal and foresight to understand what we need to do going forward to achieve the goals we have now.
“I’ve never seen Conor like this. It’s about the challenge, the competition, being the best version of ourselves.
“Not just the body, but the mind and the soul as well. And that’s fun for me to see.
“The guy doesn’t have to work a day in his life. He made more money this year not fighting; that’s how good business is.

“So to see him hungry to compete, hungry to continue to evolve, hungry to prove all the naysayers wrong and hungry to prove who his really is, not only athletically but as a businessman and as a human being, that to me is exciting.
“That’s a driver for me; it fulfils my purposes.
“The skill level is on another level. It really is, on all fronts. The chemistry within the team, the coaches and the coordination.”
As well as plotting to win back the UFC title he has not held since 2017, McGregor is linked with a boxing match against Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao, 41, also has a management deal with Attar’s Paradigm Sports, paving the way for a crossover bout next year.
McGregor made his boxing debut three years ago, losing to Floyd Mayweather in round ten, but has not been in the ring since.
Mayweather, 43, retired professionally after the pay-per-view spectacle, but his career as a box office star continues.
He announced he will face 25-year-old YouTube sensation Logan Paul – who is 0-1 as a pro – next February in a ‘special exhibition’.

Paul’s brother Jake, 23, is also making a run as a prizefighter and called out McGregor after knocking out retired NBA player Nate Robinson last month.
But Attar blasted the farcical mismatches involving the new age of boxing newcomers.
And he insisted McGregor and Pacquiao have no intentions of jumping on the trend, instead wanting to fight each other.
He said: “Manny Pacquiao sees Conor McGregor as a real threat and a real formidable opponent.
“And he has his own plans politically; he’s a machine in what he does. Either of them isn’t trying to go fight YouTubers next.
“At the end of the day, I don’t see why it shouldn’t happen.
“As we saw in 2020, you can never count anything out any more, but right now the intention is for that to happen in 2021.”
