Canelo Alvarez’s incredible body transformation from welterweight to light heavyweight and winning at super-middleweight

CANELO ALVAREZ is arguably boxing’s pound-for-pound king having now won in FOUR different weight divisions.
Most-recently, the Mexican, 30, dominated British star Callum Smith to win the WBA (Super), The Ring and WBC super-middleweight titles.

Canelo most-recently dropped down to super-middleweight to beat Smith

But before that, Canelo had leapt from welterweight to LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT to beat Sergey Kovalev in 2019.
That win saw him join legendary Mexican’ Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Jorge Arce as four-division world champions.
Having started his career at 15, Alvarez fluctuated in weight ,even fighting at the light-welterweight limit of 140lbs before settling in at welterweight.
Winning his first world title at light-middleweight, SunSport investigates the dramatic body transformation 54-1-2 Canelo has been through in his career…

    Welterweight
After 33 bouts, Alvarez made his US debut on October 2008 beating Larry Mosley and recorded another win Stateside before returning back to Mexico for two years and nine fights.
When he returned he defended his NABF welterweight title against Jose Cotto in what turned out to be his last contest at 147lbs.

    Light-middleweight
Canelo first won a world title at 154lbs beating Ricky Hatton’s brother Matthew in California.
The Mexican won a points decision but was much trimmer in frame and bulk with a baby face.

He would make five defences of the WBC belt before unifying against Austin Trout in April 2013 also claiming the WBA strap.
At aged 23, Canelo would defend his light-middleweight titles against ring legend Floyd Mayweather – but was made to suffer on the scales.

    Floyd Mayweather
Mayweather only moved up from welterweight to face Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, but did so once again to challenge rising star Canelo in September 2013.
But the American boxing great – who promoted and managed himself – proved he is a veteran of the business side of the sport by forcing Alvarez to contract stipulations.
The Vegas bout was made at a catchweight of 152lbs, meaning the champion had to lose an extra two pounds – and Canelo claimed Mayweather even tried to put a rehydration clause in the contract.
Mayweather reportedly weighed 150lbs, below weight, and Alvarez came in at 165 pounds, putting on almost a stone – but was still outpointed by his American rival.

    Middleweight
Canelo moved up to middleweight two years after his first defeat, and learned from Mayweather on how to use his star power.
Despite campaigning in the 160lbs division, the Mexican hero forced his opponents to fight at a catchweight of 155lbs, first winning the The Ring, Lineal, and WBC titles against Cotto.
Brit Amir Khan even moved up to middleweight to fight Canelo at 155lbs, but was brutally KO’d in six rounds before Alvarez moved back to light-middleweight to win the WBO title from Merseysider Liam Smith.
He only dropped back to 154lbs after being mandated by the WBC to face Gennady Golovkin, but promoter De La Hoya insisted his man was not yet a true middleweight.

    Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
Canelo beat Smith for the WBO belt in his final fight at 154lbs.
Despite De La Hoya claiming the Mexican was not yet ready to box at 160lbs, one fight later Alvarez would face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a 164.5lbs catchweight bout – ABOVE the middleweight limit.
The fight was used as a tester before Canelo matched up against middleweight rival GGG, as Chavez Jr was easily outpointed.

    Super-middleweight
After two contentious results against Golvokin at middleweight – that saw Canelo walk away with a draw and win – he announced a move up to 168lbs to face Brit Rocky Fielding.
The Mexican would challenge for the WBA’s understudy super-middleweight world title, which he won with ease in three rounds.
Canelo was much the smaller man but targeted Fielding’s body to win a world title in his third weight, and then revealed he would be open to fighting world champion Callum Smith.

    Daniel Jacobs
After winning a super-middleweight belt, WBC and WBA middleweight champion Canelo returned to 160lbs, facing Daniel Jacobs with the IBF title also on the line.
Alvarez’s move back down eight pounds did nothing to dent his reflexes and power as he put on a great display of defence and aggression on the way to a points win.
Canelo stuck with the IBF’s 170lbs rehydration clause, but Jacobs did not, meaning he lost the belt on the scales after coming in at 173.6lbs for tactical reasons.

    Sergey Kovalev
After adding another middleweight belt to his collection Alvarez decided not to defend them against rival Golovkin in a trilogy bout.
Instead he replicated US legends such as Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins and Sugar Ray Leonard who all won 175lbs titles.
Canelo hinted he would stick to the weight after beating Kovalev, but instead slipped back to super-middleweight for his next fight against Smith.

    Callum Smith

Canelo weighed in for his super-middleweight win over Smith
AT the weekend, Canelo cemented himself as a fully-fledged four-division champion after dominating Britain’s brave and resilient Smith after weighing in at the 168lb limit exactly.
The Mexican superstar walked away with the WBA super-middleweight crown, two years after winning their secondary ‘Regular’ title.
Canelo had too much power and precision for Smith and stormed to victory after 12 one-sided and almost identical rounds in Texas.
    Cruiserweight?
Jones Jr was the only boxer ever to go from middleweight to heavyweight champion, after he dethroned John Ruiz in 2003 to become WBA champion, but skipped over cruiserweight.
He vacated his heavyweight title straight away, moving back down to light-heavyweight, and later in his career campaigned at cruiserweight, but never for a world title.
Last year, Canelo stated he would dare to go all the way up to cruiserweight.
He said: “It sounds very crazy, but you never know.”

Tyson Fury reveals he was meant to meet Donald Trump for lunch and Pope before coronavirus axed meetings

TYSON FURY has revealed coronavirus restrictions put paid to him meeting Donald Trump and THE POPE.
As well as seeing a potential December homecoming fight hit the buffers, it seems the Gypsy King missed out on meeting some seriously big names outside the ring.

Fury is believed to be in negotiations for an undisputed clash against Anthony Joshua next year.
But with the UK plunged into harsh new Covid-19 restrictions, the chances of it happening abroad are even higher.
Fury will be hoping he would be permitted to travel for that having missed out on meeting two other big hitters.
Speaking to this month’s Big Issue magazine, the 32-year-old said: “I was supposed to go and meet Donald Trump for lunch. But that got cancelled because of Covid.

“And I was supposed to meet the Pope, but that had to be rescheduled too.
“It’s quite a crazy feeling, to be honest, that these people will want to meet me. So I’ll take advantage of it.
“And, you know, maybe I could learn something from these people, even if I’m around them for 30 seconds. See how they are, how they act. Never stop learning.”
Fury also opened up on his mental health battles to the magazine, and told those who sell the publication to ‘stay positive and stay focused on the short-term goal’.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed the all-British heavyweight showdown between Fury and Joshua has been verbally agreed.
The blockbuster bout is likely to take place between next May or June after a breakthrough in negotiations.
Matchroom boss Hearn admitted that ‘minor issues’ need to be resolved before an official date is confirmed.
It is set to be one of the biggest British showdowns ever as the two giants to head-to-head to determine who will be crowned undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
    AJ FIGHT ‘VERBALLY AGREED’
The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger wrote on social media: “Eddie Hearn says Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua is verbally agreed to and contracts are being drafted for the heavyweight championship fight in May/June.
“Hearn says only ‘minor issues to resolve’ such as who walks last, the site, etc. This fight is going to happen next.”
It is likely to be a two-fight deal worth a staggering £500million while the destination could be in the Middle East.

Jake Paul reveals he has sent Conor McGregor proof of funds over $50m fight offer but UFC star ‘put tail between a**’

JAKE PAUL says he has ‘sent proof of funds’ to Conor McGregor and accused the Irishman of ‘putting his tail between his legs’.
The YouTuber wants to fight McGregor in a boxing ring, and has offered the UFC legend $50million to get it on.

Jake Paul genuinely believes Conor McGregor is scared of fighting him

The YouTube star posed alongside the huge cheque

McGregor has so far put on radio silence, with Paul increasingly desperate to get the contracts signed.
In a video sent to TMZ, Paul said: “We’re talking to his team
“[Conor] looked at my DM on Instagram. But, we’re talking to his team.”
“When we sent them the proof of funds they like put their tail between their a**.

“They’re like. ‘This little crazy kid ain’t playing’.”
Last week the YouTube star released a video calling out the Irish star and UFC chief Dana White.
He recorded the video while sat in his Lamborghini with an Ireland flag draped over his shoulders.
Alongside him was a huge cheque that appeared to show his $50m [£37.5m] offer for McGregor.

Conor McGregor has been hinting at a boxing return for a while now

Paul said: “What the f*** is up you Irish c***? Good morning Conor McGregor.
“I know you’re probably beating up old dudes in a bar right now or maybe you’re j***ing off as you’re sick of f***ing your wife, I mean, she’s a four [out of ten], Conor you could do a lot better, but happy Monday!
“My team sent you a $50 million offer this morning, $50 million cash, proof of funds, the biggest fight offer you’ve ever been offered.
“But you’re scared to fight me Conor. You duck me as you’re scared to fight a YouTuber.

“But you want to fight Dustin Poirier, who has less followers on Instagram than my f***ing dog, that’s a fact.

“You said there’s zero per cent chance of this fight happening but there’s zero percent of you getting some p****.

Canelo Alvarez will be bullying heavyweights next after Callum Smith demolition job, predicts Tony Bellew

CANELO ALVAREZ will end up beating HEAVYWEIGHTS according to former cruiserweight champ Tony Bellew.
The Mexican dominated Liverpoool’s Callum Smith from start to finish to win the WBC and WBA super-middleweight world titles.

Tony Bellew admits he is shocked by Canelo’s ‘unbelievable’ rise through the divisionsCredit: Getty Images – Getty

That means Canelo is now a four-weight world champ, with Bellew describing his progress through the divisions as ‘unexplainable’.
The Bomber tweeted: “Yes I agree he’s great and amazing at what he does but it’s unexplainable to be able to go through weight divisions like this and bully people!
“Take nothing away from his boxing ability cos he’s amazing but come on ffs! He’s gonna end up legging HEAVYWEIGHTS!”
Canelo had too much power and precision for Smith and stormed to victory after 12 one-sided and almost identical rounds in Texas.

After the win, he said: “I did a great job after 13 months out.
“Smith is a great fighter but I did a great job. I am so happy.
“I am the best in the world and from the first round I wanted to see what he brings but I showed what I am.”
Canelo was banned from boxing for six months after failing two drugs tests in 2018.

The Mexican fighter, 30, twice tested positive for banned substance clenbuterol after giving samples on February 17 and February 20.
He claimed it was a result of eating contaminated meat, and went on to pass two drugs tests ahead of his rematch against Golovkin.
But with the hearing date into the failed samples coming too close to the fight date of May 5, Canelo was forced to withdraw from the fight.
He did end up having that fight though in September that year, winning on points in another close-fought scrap.
Canelo has now won world titles at super-welter, middle, super-middle and light-heavyweight.

Fury shared some footage on his Instagram Stories of him taking some shots from a disabled boxer.
It comes after, unsurprisingly, the WBC champ failed to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Fury released a clip on spocial media after his nomination asking to be removed from the list, as he has ‘no need for verification or awards’
But the BBC refused the Gypsy King’s request.

Lewis Hamilton was crowned Sports Personality of the Year 2020.
The Formula 1 legend won the gong for a second time, having earned the title back in 2014.
The Mercedes driver won a fourth Driver’s Championship in a row this season, his seventh overall.
Fury, meanwhile, is reportedly closing in on his Battle of Britain against Joshua.

Another obstacle preventing the deal is the fact Oleksandr Usyk is currently the mandatory challenger for AJ’s WBO belt.
Hearn has previously admitted that both fighters could ditch their belts, from the four major sanctioning bodies, if they try to block the undisputed decider.

Callum Smith accuses Canelo Alvarez of deliberately targeting tricep injury as he faces op after massive swelling on arm

CALLUM SMITH has accused Canelo Alvarez of deliberately injuring his left arm in their super-middleweight showdown.
Smith’s reign as WBA (Super) and Ring Magazine 168lb champion came to an end at the hands of the Mexican early on Sunday morning.

The slick slugger suffered a unanimous decision defeat to the four-weight world champion, who turned in an imperious performance at Texas’ Aladome Stadium.
After the fight, eagle-eyed boxing fans noticed Smith had a massive swelling high-up on his left arm.
The injury appeared to be the result of the 30-year-old absorbing several punishing right hooks.
Mundo reckons Canelo’s game plan was to target his left arm, telling Boxing Social: “It was intentional. I knew from the first round that.

“I said to Joe in round one, ‘He’s aiming for my arm.’ Every right hook he was throwing, he was going for my arm.
“And then I think I said to Joe in round four or something, ‘My arm is f***ed.””

The latest Ring Magazine P4P rankings
The previously-undefeated Smith believes the injury prevented him from utilising the deadliest weapon in his arsenal.
He added: “It kind of took away my catch left hook, which is my best shot. And whether that was a plan on their behalf, it worked a treat.

“Because when he was throwing – I remember Grovesy [George Groves] threw a couple of hooks against me and I thought, ‘Well, you’re throwing the right hook. The next one you’re getting it.’
“And the next one, I countered. If you had told me that Canelo was going to throw that many right hooks at me, I probably would’ve thought that I would’ve been able to get my catch-hook counter off.
“Some people asked afterwards because they thought my hand was hurt because of someone throwing so many right hooks and for me not to return it.
“But when it was hitting me in the arm, it was kind of making my arm drop rather than being able to return with it.
“But I still jabbed with it, do you know what I mean? It didn’t completely take away the game. But it just took that one shot away from me. And I’d say credit to him, I think he knew what he was doing.
“In the 12th round, he looked at the swelling and laughed and asked, ‘Is it sore?’ It’s experience on his behalf. It completely tools away probably my best shot.”

Although Smith was frustrated by his inability to utilise his trademark shot, he insists the fight wouldn’t have gone his way had he not been injured.
“He said: “It’s not an excuse. If I would’ve had two hands the whole fight, would I have won the fight? Probably not. He was just a little bit too good for me on the night.”
According to The Athletic, the lump on Smith’s left arm was the result of an injured tricep – which he’s set to have surgery on.

Callum Smith flies home with mangled arm untreated to avoid getting stuck in US over Christmas

BRAVE Callum Smith jetted home from his loss to Canelo Alvarez yesterday with his mangled arm untreated to escape getting stuck in the US for Christmas.
The Liverpool hero lost his super-middleweight world titles to magnificent pound-for-pound superstar Alvarez, 30, in a wide unanimous decision.

And Smith suffered a suspected detached left bicep from the huge right hands the Mexican repeatedly thundered into his guard.
Canelo admitted he noticed the gruesome injury from as early as the fourth round and targeted Smith’s dangerous left arm.
But the 30-year-old Brit refused to visit a local hospital in case he was delayed travelling home or use the painful wound as an excuse for his first career loss.
Smith, on a tough Texas mission away from daughter Alba, said: “I am devastated, I came to win but it was not my night.

“He was good. I have a bit of a sore arm, he kept hitting me in it, but I have no excuses.
“I want to go home and see my family and enjoy Christmas.
“I miss my little girl and I will decide what is best for me next year.”
Although Smith made the 12st limit comfortably he said he felt the weight cut affected his engine.

Callum Smith suffered the first defeat of his career when he came up against Canelo

The 6ft 3in powerhouse added: “I didn’t feel as dominant late-on but I made the weight OK, no excuses.
“I’ve lost to a pound-for-pound star. We both turned up, he was just the better man on the night.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn will now try to get his WBO super-middle champ Billy Joe Saunders, 31, a crack at four-weight king Canelo.
