    BEHIND THE SCENES

    FIGHT REPORT
Here is SunSport boxing correspondent Wally Downes Jr’s verdict…
LUKE CAMPBELL handed over his golden boy status to Ryan Garcia after suffering a stunning bodyshot KO to the wonderkid.
Hull’s 2012 London Olympic winner was sent to Dallas to be the American 22-year-old’s first serious test after 20 one-sided wins and try to secure his third world title shot.
But the 33-year-old was destroyed by a magnificent left hook that confirmed Garcia is worth all the hype.

    RESPECT
The fighters are posing for photos together in the dressing room – real warm embrace between the pair.
Canelo Alvarez is also back there.
    All’s well that ends well.

    BRIT PRIDE
    Eddie Hearn’s take…

    LOOKING AHEAD
Ryan Garcia exits the arena and has a word with WBC champion Devin Haney on the way out.
The pair smile at each other, and they clearly want to fight each other next.

    FIGHTING TALK
On what he said to Canelo Alvarez: “I just wanted to thank him. Without Canelo being by my side all the time I don’t know if I would’ve learned all the things I’ve learned.
“I’m grateful and blessed to have a great team around me.”

    ‘WARRIOR’
Ryan Garcia: “I definitely showed a lot of people who I really am. I wanted to show people that whatever they call you’ a social media fighter’. You’re not what people tell you you are, you are who you choose to be. And I chose to be a champion tonight.
“I have never been dropped in my life. I think I got too excited in the moment. I felt like I could crack him, but he cracked me. I just had to get back up and show everybody what a warrior is really like.”

    LION KING
This is what it meant to Ryan Garcia – what a massive roar.

    CROWNING MOMENT
Ryan Garcia has a crown on his head, and he’s getting some advice from Canelo Alvarez.
With this ability, this support and his massive following there really isn’t a limit to what he could do in boxing.

    EMBRACE
Ryan Garcia tells Luke Campbell he learned a lot tonight, he’d never been put down like that.
    Classy embrace.

    IT’S OVER!!!
Garcia has knocked out Campbell in the seventh round.
A vicious body shot that the Brit just couldn’t get up from.
    Stunning finish from King Ry.

    ROUND SEVEN
Campbell is down! A massive body shot!

    ROUND SIX
And Garcia starts round six looking to line Campbell up and tee off on him.
Now it’s Campbell’s turn to have to show a response and he comes back well in the second half of the round.
Garcia looking to pin Campbell on the ropes again and land a power blow, but the Brit fights his way out of there nicely with a straight right hand.

    ROUND FIVE
Campbell nearly went down there. He looked to be held up by the ropes, right on the bell as well.
He was happy to get back to the corner there and listen to his trainer McGuigan.
Right on the temple from Garcia.

    ROUND FIVE
Garcia gets caught again on the way in by Campbell.
A better round from Campbell, this. He’s been on the front foot for the majority of it.
But Garcia comes back well with a straight right hand that Campbell has to take on the chin.
The home fighter finishes the round stronger as he tries to tee off with a flurry and he catches Campbell RIGHT ON THE BELL.

    ROUND FOUR
Garcia with a big right hand that sends Campbell stumbling backwards a bit.
The Brit isn’t doing enough to win these rounds, he’s very passive just throwing out some tentative jabs and looking for a big shot.
Garcia has won the last two rounds I think just by being busier. It’s been a good response to that second round shock.

    ROUND THREE
This is a good response from Garcia but Campbell maybe a bit passive?
He hasn’t gone in and put the pressure on Garcia like you’d expect having floored him.
Garcia finishes the round aggressively as he looks to tee off, but he has to be careful not to stand in front of Campbell and get countered again.

Garcia vs Campbell result: Watch incredible bodyshot that KO’d brave Campbell in seventh round as Brit loses Dallas epic

LUKE CAMPBELL handed over his golden boy status to Ryan Garcia after suffering a stunning bodyshot KO to the wonderkid in the seventh round of their epic Dallas clash.
Hull’s 2012 London Olympic winner was sent to the US to be the American 22-year-old’s first serious test after 20 one-sided wins and try to secure his third world title shot.

But the 33-year-old was destroyed by a magnificent left hook that confirmed Garcia is worth all the hype.
The Englishman had a brilliant start when he chinned Garcia with a sweet left hook that dropped him to the floor for the first time in his life.
But Garcia, the social media star with almost 8million Instagram followers, battered his way back into the contest and brutalised Campbell with a left hook to the ribs that folded him into the canvas and refused to let him rise inside ten.
Campbell was booed into the ring by the 6,000 Garcia fans allowed in the arena.

The Brit had flown out to Texas two days before Christmas, denying himself any of the joys of the festive period with his wife and three young sons.
Campbell walked to the ring modestly to the tune of Queen before showboat Garcia was carried to the ring on a throw, complete with gold-leaf crown for the self-appointed ‘King Ry’.
Garcia backed the Brit into a corner instantly with jabs to the body but Campbell seemed eager to test his power early.
The American then stung Campbell with a crisp right hand that staggered Campbell briefly.

The fight lasted seven thrilling rounds with both men being put downCredit: Golden Boy
The Hull hero’s first success was a shot left hook that tagged the pretty boy’s Instagram-friendly face.
Campbell liked throwing his left hook to the 22-year-old’s untested ribs at the start of the second. A southpaw jab lured Garcia’s guard down and then a huge left hook smashed the odds-on favourite into the canvas.
The million-dollar honey shot that was supposed to win Garcia the fight and take him to a world title was the one used against him.
Garcia shook off the shock for the third and got back on the attack but Campbell kept scaring him off, unlike his previous 20 opponents.

A right hand halfway through the force clattered into Campbell’s skull and he shuffled his feet to cope and returned to slashing his left hand into Garcia’s body.
In the fifth, a long right hand rocked the Englishman’s head back in the best punch of the stanza.
And, right at the end of the round, Campbell was stunned by a left hook and only kept up by the ropes behind him.

Garcia had British blood filling his nostrils as he raced out for the sixth and tried to finish the job, only for Campbell to dig deep and recover.
Then Garcia almost smashed Campbell in half with an unbelievable body shot that crippled the veteran.
A leaping hook into his ribs took that split-second delay to rob all the air from Campbell’s lungs and he was forced down to two knees before he failed to beat the count.

Canelo Alvarez features heavily on Ryan Garcia’s Instagram page, and he’s here supporting the protegee tonight.
Garcia looking relaxed in his dressing room as he slips into his gold gown.
Campbell is going through some final pad work.

    NEXT UP
The stage is set for our main event now in Dallas.
Both fighters going through their final preparations in their dressing rooms.

    SOBBING SON
Roger Gutierrez lost his mum to cancer in November and just won a world title with a last-second knockdown.
Mrs Gutierrez will be looking down on her boy full of pride.
The new WBA super-feather king screams with relief and looks up to the heavens.

    ROGER GUTIERREZ WINS!
The judges all score it: 113-112 for the new king

    ROUND TWELVE
If Gutierrez survives he must be close to taking the fight following three knockdowns.
Alvarado has been the aggressor in the last six rounds but he was just dropped.
    All over!

    ALVARADO DOWN IN TWELVE
Roger Gutierrez seems to gave just won the fight with his third knockdown!
That shot came from nowhere but could crown him a world champion.

    ROUND ELEVEN
If Gutierrez really wants to rip this title away from the champion he needs to make these last two rounds count.
That 10-7 round seems a lifetime away now and he has let Alvarado back into the last six rounds.
The round ends with Gutierrez getting warned over rabbit punching.
Such a tense finish coming up…

    ROUND TEN
Very few clean shots landing now as both men struggle to go the distance.
Gutierrez is throwing more shots but they’re only thudding into Alvarado’s guard.
The champion is throwing fewer shots but just rammed a jab into the challenger that stiffened his legs briefly.
These late sessions are getting harder and harder to split.

    ROUND NINE
Another tense war as both warriors worries about throwing away all they have worked on so far.
Gutierrez is smothered in the blood that has been dropping from his left eye.
Alvarado looks fresh faced and smooth but he suffered a 10-7 loss early on.

    ROUND EIGHT
Finally a quiet round to catch our breath.
Gutierrez looks like a man who has spent all his money too soon.
Alvarado is now controlling the bout like a seasoned champion.
Gutierrez was so close to landing this world title for his recently deceased mother.

    ROUND EIGHT
Ricky Hatton says: “It’s a very intriguing fight, Alvarado has got right back into the fight.
“I don’t know if Gutierrez has lost his confidence or if he is saving himself for a late charge.
“Alvarado is totally in control now”.

    ROUND SEVEN
Gutierrez has started flagging, the shots he throws all drive into Alvarado’s high guard.
Alvarado likes to soak them up and then hurl himself forward with power shots.
Gutierrez ventures forward with a one-two but Alvarado counters with a trademark left hook that could snatch him another session with the judges.

    ROUND SIX
The referee orders Gutierrez to get his cut checked by the doctor and he has no problem waving it on.
Gutierrez is throwing one-twos but Alvarado is happily catching them on his gloves.
Another round ends with Alvarado on the assault and probably impressing the Texas judges with his cajones.

    ROUND FIVE
Six thousand fans are allowed in the Dallas arena.
They would have seen Gutierrez ship a stiff right hand as the fight continues to sway back in Alvarado’s favour.
Alvarado launches a wild left hook but misses and leaps into the air with misplaced momentum.
Another session in the bank for resurgent Alvarado.

    ROUND FOUR
Alvarado totally dominated Gutierrez when they met in 2017, Gutierrez’s corner pulled him out after seven painful rounds.
This is far more even as Alvarado works his way back into the contest.
Did Gutierrez empty his tank with the early knockdowns?
Will Alvarado grow in confidence having walked through his best shots?

    ROUND FOUR
Gutierrez has a 10-7 round in the bank now and Alvarado has it all to do.
Maybe Alvarado needs the power of his brother’s immaculate ponytail?
The cut on Gutierrez’s eye should not effect his vision as it is on the outer corner.
Alvarado has marched through the mist and seems to have cleared his head.

    ROUND THREE
Gutierrez has taken his foot of Alvarado’s neck and let him finish the stanza.
Two rapid knockdowns looked to have won the fight for the challenger.
Gutierrez is now bleeding though from the corner of his left eye.
    What a round!

    ALVARADO DOWN TWICE IN THREE
Gutierrez lands an uppercut than smashes his rival to the floor!
The champion beats the count but is then blitzed again and eats canvas.
Gutierrez is seconds away from a world title.
Alvarado is desperate and clinging on but he is recovering it seems.

    ROUND TWO
Gutierrez is scoring with jabs while Alvarado looks for power punches, just like his brother in the previous fight.
Gutierrez lost his mother to cancer in November and insists he will win the title for her tonight.
Gutierrez fancies the counter left hook as his honey shot but scores there with an uppercut.
The round again sets alight in the last 15 seconds as they try to nick it with the judges.

    ROUND ONE
Alvarado beat Gutierrez in 2017 so the Venezuelan is looking for revenge.
After a tentative start it ended in a fabulous trade-off.
Gutierrez threw the first serious bomb and looked like stunning his man in the opening round.
But Alvarado grew into the war and matched his opponent for brutality before the bell rang.

RENE ALVARADO VS ROGER GUTIERREZ NOW
Alvarado’s twin just won a great 10-round battle with DeeJay Kriel and now he faces a rematch.
Super-featherweight rivalry for the WBA world title in Dallas now.
This is the last fight before Campbell vs Garcia.

    ALVARADO WINS IN TEN!
The referee stops the action with Kriel in real danger.
Alvarado defends his title but Kriel gets all the respoect and praise.

    ROUND NINE
Kriel has spent so much more time on the front foot, peppering the champion.
But a massive right hand rocks the South African and he clings on to the fight by the skin of his teeth.
Kriel was put on his feet, but he showed so much heart.

    ROUND NINE
Kriel has pulled off a mini-miracle by jabbing and moving his way back into the fight after two early knockdowns.
Kriel insists he is not tired after 24 minutes of action.
Alvarado starts like a tornado and lands an uppercut on the ropes.

    ROUND SEVEN
Alvarado seems to have injured his left arm as his corner was working on it during that break.
Kriel is enjoying his third successive impressive round.
Alvarado is stalking and threatening all the time.
But he is also walking on to dozens of clean shots. Good session.

Josh Kelly out to remind Sunderland fans what success looks like after being booted from academy

JOSH KELLY wants to put smiles back on the faces of Sunderland fans — with all the flair that got him axed from his boyhood club.
The 26-year-old welterweight will be the first major British boxing act of 2021 when he aims to dethrone David Avanesyan for his European title on January 30.

With the former Premier League force languishing in League One, it has not been a fun few years for Mackem fans.
But silky 2016 Olympian Kelly is out to remind his fellow Black Cats what success looks like.
He said: “When I was a kid I watched Prince Naseem Hamed, Ray Leonard, Willie Pep and I loved how they boxed and wanted to do it the way I wanted to do it.
“I was the same at football. When I was in the Sunderland academy I wanted to have the ball and take people on and they would always tell me I have to pass it.

“I was released and taken back a few times but then I focused on boxing because I wanted a sport to show my flair in.
“I remember my first-ever session with the academy, basically my trial. I got the ball, went past three people, passed the ball, got it back and had a shot.
“They stopped the session and had a go at me for not passing straight away. They told me, ‘The simple thing is always best’ but I was thinking, ‘Well, why doesn’t Ronaldo do that, then?’.
“My flair was just built into me as a kid.

“I can box simple and hold my hands up but if I am not getting caught and I am winning fights then that’s how I will box.
People think I will change my style when I step up in class but I have a lot of layers and people are going to see them.”
When this fight was first announced for December 2018, Kelly was the red-hot favourite.
But two cancellations, following an illness for the Englishman and the pandemic, have let the 32-year-old Russian champion boost his record to 26-3-1 and sway bookies.
But Kelly, still a young pup with just ten professional wins and a draw to his name, is happy being the underdog.
He added: “This fight has been a long time coming and it’s finally time to silence my doubters.

“He is the favourite heading into the fight. He has proved how good he is in his last three fights.
“It’s going to be a good fight but one I’m quietly confident about.
“I feel like this is a turning point in my career.
“When I win, then I will take it to the next level.
“A lot in my future depends on this fight.”

Canelo Alvarez vacates WBA middleweight title as he looks to unify super-middleweight division after Callum Smith win

CANELO ALVAREZ has reportedly vacated his WBA middleweight world title.
The 30-year-old had not defended the belt since his win over Daniel Jacobs in May 2019.

Canelo – who has been called out by Billy Joe Saunders – will now be looking to unify the super-middleweight division.
His trainer, Eddy Reynoso, claimed Canelo feels at his best in the 168-pound division.
He told BoxingScene: “He is 168 now, it is his prime weight.
“It is where he feels strongest and we are not giving away anything in weight anymore at middleweight.”

Japanese star Ryota Murata is set to take over as the recognised WBA middleweight champion.
Canelo cemented himself as a fully-fledged four-division champion with a win over Callum Smith last month.
The Mexican superstar walked away with the WBA super-middleweight crown, two years after winning their secondary ‘Regular’ title.
He now boasts a record of 54-1, with his only defeat coming against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

Eddie Hearn is already planning Canelo’s next move following his impressive victory over Smith.
The promoter is ‘discussing a two-fight deal’ for him to face Avni Yildirim and then Billy Joe Saunders.
Canelo has 90 days to defend his WBC crown against mandatory challenger Yildirim.

DAZN presenter Kate Abdo backs Ryan Garcia against Luke Campbell and calls for fight vs Gervonta Davis after mum jibe

DAZN presenter Kate Abdo has backed Ryan Garcia to come out on top against Luke Campbell.
The Brit is hoping to secure his third lightweight world title shot with a win over the Mexican-American.

Kate Abdo claimed Luke Campbell does not have the momentum of a winnerCredit: EPA

But Abdo has claimed Campbell will struggle with Garcia’s speed, timing and confidence when the pair lock horns on Saturday night.
Giving her prediction to SunSport, she said: “As a Brit, I’d love to be able to say Luke Campbell, but the truth is I give Ryan Garcia the edge.
“I think Ryan’s speed and timing and his confidence right now outweigh the experience factor.
“Ryan comes in off the back of those big early knock-outs.

“Luke doesn’t have the momentum of a winner, and unfortunately, I think that matters.”
When asked how Campbell can beat Garcia, Abdo said: “I think he’s going to have to feint and double jab his way in.
“Ryan Garcia has great speed and timing and he can use that to counter Luke if they stay at distance.
“I think the route to victory for Luke is to get on the inside and bang.”

Garcia, 22, enters the fight with an incredible record of 20-0 including 17 knockouts.
But Ricky Hatton is hopeful that he has ‘bitten off more than he can chew’ with Campbell.
Abdo – who is becoming the face of PPV boxing Stateside – has called for Garcia to fight Gervonta Davis after their war of words turned personal.
When asked what is the biggest future fight for Garcia, she said: “On paper, the biggest fight has to be Teofimo Lopez.
“He’s the unified or undisputed champ, depending on how you want to argue it. A chance at all those belts would be a huge opportunity.

Kate Abdo claimed Luke Campbell needs to ‘get on the inside and bang’ if he wants to winCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“But I also think that part of what makes a big fight is when there is genuine personal beef.
“Ryan and Tank are both popular fighters and fans turn out in numbers for them.
“Gervonta insulted Ryan’s mother so now it’s personal. It may be for fewer belts, but I like that fight more.”
