BLOOD-SOAKED Josh Kelly was given oxygen in the ring after a savage stoppage at the hands of David Avanesyan.

Kelly was given oxygen in the ring after the fight

But when the pair did finally get it on, it would only last six rounds as Sunderland fighter Kelly was pulled out by trainer Adam Booth when he was in deep trouble after two knockdowns.
But the brutal battering, which say Avanesyan defend his European welterweight title, did not please everyone in the Russian warhorse’s corner – as his trainer had bet on him to win in the seventh!
Brit coach Carl Greaves said: “I was so confident he would win, even though people called me crazy.
“But I’m a bit gutted because I had £500 on round seven.”

Kelly – who suffered his first professional defeat – oozed class from the off, making Avanesyan miss and tagging him when he dared to put a foot wrong.
In the second, Kelly stunned Avanesyan with a perfect left hook and he stumbled back and bounced off the ropes.
But the fight turned when the Sunderland lad started bleeding from a nasty gash on the left side of the back of his head.
Despite blood pouring down his left shoulder, the bearded Kelly was now involved in a back-and-forth battle.

That was until Avanesyan caught Kelly with a left hook in the sixth which smashed the blood across the ring.

    How the fighters compare
Follow ALL the action with our live blog below…

    BRILLIANT
Relentless pressure from Avanesyan from the moment he was rocked in the second round.
Mad finish, it came from nowhere, but Adam Booth’s towel-throw was a compassionate one.
Kelly will be back, he’s a great fighter, but Avanesyan was a bridge too far this evening.

    HUGE WIN
    Massive win for David Avanesyan.

    AVANESYAN STOPS KELLY!
    WOOOOOW!

    ROUND SIX
More success for Avanesyan, he’s not giving Kelly a second’s rest in there, but PBK looks fit as a fiddle.
It is only round six, however. And Avanesyan gets the knock down!
The pressure has got to him! Big shots from the Russian.

    ROUND FIVE
Better from Avanesyan here, landing a few nice shots, especially the left hand, on Kelly.
Kelly looks like he isn’t bothered by them but he can’t take too many and not expect to feel them at some point.
He’s working in close now Kelly, too. Looking to be the bigger man when they tie up, but Avanesyan is full of beans and is loving it in there.
But so is Kelly, as he decides to come away from the in-fighting, electing to box and move again. I’d give this round to the Russian. 3-2 Kelly.

    ROUND FOUR
Ava trying to work the body in this fourth round, but Kelly still showing his speed with some nice combos.
Kelly also talking to Avanesyan in there, so the Russian tries to corner him but Kelly rises to the task and fires off from the ropes.
PBK probing for Ava to hit him to the body, he better hope that doesn’t come back to haunt him.
This is a real hard, fast-pace fight in London.

    ROUND THREE
That blood really flowing from the back of Kelly’s head somewhere.
But he’s still got that speed advantage and he’s landing some great shots while Ava continues to put rabid pressure on.
Brilliant fight so far, it really is. And it should only get better.
Ava lands a nice right hand but Kelly comes back with lefts of his own.
Could be 3-0 or 2-1 Kelly at this point.

    ROUND TWO
A little marking under the right eye of Kelly, one to watch as the rounds go on. Ava can hit very hard.
The Russian continues to maraud forward, he wants to land and land big, but Kelly doing okay at evading them so far.
And a huge left hand from Kelly in the second round! Brilliant left hook there, he buzzed Avanesyan!
But Kelly seems to have a cut, perhaps from a clash of heads.
He’s got the speed advantage in there big time. Big round for PBK.

    ROUND ONE
Kelly doing his usual, letting big shots fly past him, but he’ll have to be immense tonight to win this one.
It’s Ava with the early attempts to land hard, Kelly just sussing things out a little bit.
But Kelly does land some decent right hands too, good reflexes when they come his way too.
Close first round, could’ve gone either way. 1-0 Kelly?

    ROUND ONE
    Here we go!

    KELLY VS AVANESYAN UP NEXT!
David Diamante doing his usual…. usual.
    We’re just moments away.

    AVA RING-WALK
The Russian makes his walk to the ring, huge night for him, even bigger one for Kelly.

    KELLY RING-WALK
Josh Kelly making his ring-walk right now! Avanesyan coming out next.

    NO ACCESS
Mick Conlan making sure no peepers could see into Josh Kelly’s dressing room a little earlier. Almost time for the main event.

    BIG WIN
Huge win for Florian Marku tonight… and he had to get off the deck to do it.

    OFF THE MARKU
Albanian ace Florian Marku just stopped Rylan Charlton.
The former MMA fighter has just confirmed himself as serious threat to the welterweight division.
Markus said: “It was hard work but we knew it would be. But I showed now that I know how to box.”

    R8 – MARKU WINS
Marku scored with a punishing right hook in the last round but Charlton was not wobbled.
Markus scores again and Charlton is marked and wobbled.
Marku is showing his skills. Charlton is struggling now.
    The towel comes in!

    ROUND SEVEN
Charlton starts the round slashing away but Marku is hard as nails.
Marku has shown loads of talent on the back foot.
Both lads look tired but Charlton is on the front foot.
    What a fight.

    ROUND SEVEN
Marku bounced right up from that decking, the left hook that floored him was not enough to end the fight.
Marku is the real deal – Charlton is the real deal.
These lads deserve to stay in the British title mix.

    ROUND SIX – MARKU DOWN
Marku has started to pull away now with his boxing skills.
Charlton’s face is getting battered and bruised.
Then Charlton lands and Marku is decked.

    ROUND FIVE
Charlton had looked so dominant but Marku connected with a perfect shot.
Charlton has recovered and put pressure on Marku again but Marku can really box on the back foot.
Marku is landing now and punishing his rival. Marku is teasing Charlton with words as spiteful as his punches.

    ROUND FIVE
Charlton was sparked at the end of that round.
Marku’s patience paid off and he clipped the Englishman.
Marku landed a great shot and stalked his man down but Charlton survived.

    ROUND FOUR
Charlton on the march with Marku running out of idea.s.
Marku seemed so sure that Charlton would walk on to one of his shots.
But Charlton is not making any mistakes yet

    ROUND THREE
Charlton is still on the front foot, Markus lands an uppercut though that will have cored with the judges.
Marku shows a busy jab that not many people knew he had.
Charlton whacks Marku to the ribs and stays on his case all the time.

    ROUND TWO
Charlton on the march all the time.
Marku is showing boxing skills we were not sure he had.
Charlton slashes at Marku’s body and he talks back.
But Marku lands a right hand that hurts Charlton.

Josh Warrington defends his cornerman dad for not throwing in towel in brutal KO loss to Mauricio Lara

JOSH WARRINGTON has defended his dad over the brutal KO loss he suffered last Saturday.

Warrington somehow beat the count but looked in a worrying state before he was floored  again and counted out in the ninth.
A large section of the British boxing industry felt the last five rounds were unnecessary and put father-of-two Warrington’s long-term health at risk.
But the Leeds hero  said: “My cornerman is my dad and he will look after my health and safety — not only because I’m his fighter but also because I’m his son.
“He knows what I’m capable of taking.

“If it got worse I’m certain he would have pulled me out.
“But while I was making eye contact with him,  listening and responding to his questions, he saw no reason to pull me out.
“If I was stuttering, slurring, not keeping eye contact, I’m sure he would have pulled me out.
“But I gave him all  the right signs.”

Warrington also thanked referee Howard Foster for allowing the fight to continue.

He added: “Howard has seen me fight many times.   He knows I’m one of the fittest in the game.
“He knew it was early on. He gave me the opportunity and I’m thankful.
“I was hurt but still  had my senses and my awareness.”

Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin 2 pushed back to March 27 in Gibraltar as Eddie Hearn announces ‘Rumble on the Rock’

DILLIAN WHYTE’S rematch with Alexander Povetkin has been delayed until March 27 after Eddie Hearn announced the ‘Rumble on the Rock’ in Gibraltar.
The heavyweight pair were scheduled to fight again on March 6 – after the Russian’s shock KO of the Body Snatcher in August – but a venue had yet to be announced.

Eddie Hearn announced Dillian Whyte’s rematch with Alexander Povetkin is now on March 27 in GibraltarCredit: Free for editorial use

Whyte is currently training out in Portugal, but as it is on the UK Government’s ‘red list’ he would have to quarantine in a hotel for ten days to return to Britain – but won’t face the same restrictions in Gibraltar.
Hearn tweeted: “Sometimes you gotta think outside the box! Get ready for a crazy event March 27 in Gibraltar!!! #PovetkinWhyte2”
Promoter Hearn had previously hinted at a delay due to Covid and when speaking to iFL TV, he said: “There is a chance it could be delayed.
“I don’t think it will be, the main thing is to get Dillian Whyte out of Portugal. It looks like tomorrow that may happen.

“[Portugal is] on the red list and the issue we’re having is the government won’t allow Dillian Whyte to isolate in the bubble, he has to isolate in a government hotel.
“That is impossible for Dillian Whyte to do. He could go to Spain, for example, and isolate there for ten days, and then fly in on fight week.
“That’s what we’re putting into place at the moment. Small chance it could be pushed back [three] weeks to March 27, but that’s not the intention.
“It’s our intention to do everything we can to make sure March 6 stays intact.”

Hearn previously mentioned moving the fight to Gibraltar – where Whyte will not be required to isolate as Portugal is not on a travel ban.
The Brit 32, was brutally finished in round five against Povetkin, 41, last year at Hearn’s Matchroom HQ with the fight held in the back garden of his Essex offices during the pandemic.
Whyte’s chances of being the WBC mandatory for Tyson Fury’s crown went out the window and the shock defeat left him with a must-win rematch to keep his world title dreams alive.
Revenge will see him win back his right to challenge for Fury’s belt, which is set to be defended against Anthony Joshua in an undisputed title decider this year.

The 21-year-old is back at Steve Egan’s gym in Wythenshawe, where he and Tyson started out.
And he is still using Arnie’s Gym in Manchester.
Fury said: “Tyson boxed at the Egan gym and I boxed for them a few times in the amateurs so we’re taking it back to our grassroots.

“Boxing is my life. All I do is train and get myself on the road running.
“As soon as I got off the plane at Manchester Airport after Love Island, I said that all I wanted to do was box. So we went to see Frank Warren and got the show the road.
“Love Island was great fun, brought me a lot of privileges and earned me money, but boxing outweighs the celebrity life by a mile.
“Dad is training me as always, pushing as hard as he can. He is very old fashioned with Rocky-style training methods.”

Josh Kelly next fight: Brit in line for Amir Khan or Kell Brook showdown if he beats David Avanesyan, says Eddie Hearn

JOSH KELLY is in line to face Amir Khan or Kell Brook in a huge British showdown – if he gets past David Avanesyan.

How Josh Kelly and David Avanesyan match up

Promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports: “The conversation came up about Amir Khan and Kell Brook.
“Then you start thinking: ‘How big is Benn vs Khan? How big is Kelly vs Brook?’
“Khan and Brook might think: ‘What have they ever done?’
“But that’s what Brook suffered with when Khan wouldn’t fight him.

“So if the money is right, and the interest is there, maybe those guys would look at it.”
Khan and Brook have been linked with a fight for years but the two British stars could potentially be tempted to face Kelly in the ring.

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury won’t be derailed by Deontay Wilder’s legal action, says ‘confident’ Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN insists Anthony Joshua’s blockbuster heavyweight title unification fight with Tyson Fury won’t be derailed by legal action from Deontay Wilder.
The American sought mediation last year to try and land a trilogy fight with Fury, which he believes he’s contractually entitled to.

Eddie Hearn is ‘confident’ Deontay Wilder’s legal action won’t derail Joshua vs FuryCredit: MATCHROOM BOXING

Team Fury, however, are adamant Wilder’s rematch clause expired last October.
Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn isn’t concerned about Wilder’s attempts to land a third fight with The Gypsy King, telling Sky Sports: “That’s a problem and a question really for Top Rank, and Bob Arum.
“We’ve been assured by them, that’s not going to be an issue in making this fight.
“I do believe that Deontay Wilder, he was supposed to be fighting in January.

“Now we’re in the middle of February, so how much longer is he going to wait?
“He’s been out of the ring for a year now, and he’s slowly imploding in every single interview that he gives. He should get back in the ring.
BETS OF THE DAY: DON’T MISS TODAY’S BEST ODDS BOOSTS

“That’s a Fury problem, a Team Fury problem. We’re confident that it won’t impact our fight, or the announcement.”

Negotiations over Joshua vs Fury resumed after the former’s ninth-round TKO victory over Kubrat Pulev last December.
A two-fight deal has already been agreed, although the finer details of the contract have yet to be finalised.
Hearn is optimistic the fight will soon be announced, telling iFL TV: “To be honest with you I don’t really wanna talk about the fight because I keep saying the same thing, don’t I? ‘Two weeks, hopefully it’ll be done’.
“I don’t wanna bore people, but I said to Bob, ‘I’m getting asked about it 20 times a day in interviews, what do you want me to say?’
“So what I’ll tell you – and I don’t think we should go too deep into it – is we’ve sent the contract, we’ve had minor requests for changes which all seem a reasonable discussion.

Deontay Wilder has taken legal action to try land a trilogy fight with Tyson FuryCredit: Getty

“And hopefully it shouldn’t be too long to go before an official announcement. Still some work to go, but we’re close.”
Hearn recently revealed one of the outstanding issues is whose name will be first on the fight poster.
He told Boxing Scene: “Still to be discussed. I’m looking forward to that one.
“I suppose you have whose name is first, who goes to the ring first, who has the first changing room, who will weigh in first.
“Jokes aside, that’s not something that will necessarily be solved in one phone call. But it will be a discussion point over the next week or so.”
He added: “I can’t imagine a Zoom coin flip. It’s better to paper it and discuss it and come to an amicable agreement.
“For me AJ is the bigger draw globally. But again, we are not interested in a debate where the fight falls apart because of things like that.
“We just need to box that off. In any unification fight, this is always a conversation that can be arduous.”

Evander Holyfield trains with former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko as he lines up Mike Tyson bout in 2021

EVANDER HOLYFIELD is training with fellow boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko as he continues to tease a sensational comeback to the sport.
The 58-year-old exclusively revealed to SunSport that he was in talks for a trilogy fight against old rival Mike Tyson.

Evander Holyfield is training with Wladimir KlitschkoCredit: https://www.instagram.com/evanderholyfield/

Holyfield has two victories against Iron Mike – one of which was the infamous ear-biting that saw Tyson disqualified in 1997.
And The Real Deal is keen on going at it for a third time against his 54-year-old old foe.
To keep himself in tip-top shape, Holyfield has drafted in former unified heavyweight champ Klitschko, 44.
The American shared a photo of them together to his Instagram.

Since retiring following a devastating KO defeat to Anthony Joshua in 2017, Klitschko has often teased a return to boxing himself.
The Ukrainian finished his career with 64 wins and five losses – one of which was of course the scintillating points loss to Tyson Fury in 2015.
That saw him lose all his world titles – before he unsuccessfully tried to win them back against AJ.
Holyfield, meanwhile, is relishing the chance to fight Tyson again.

Tyson made an astonishing comeback in November, as he came out of retirement for an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr.
It inspired Holyfield – who twice beat Iron Mike – to do the same with the heavyweight legend training for a return of his own.
And he does so with the intention of sealing a trilogy with Tyson as negotiations between the two continue.

Holyfield, 58, told SunSport: “People do what they choose to do and for whatever reason they have, they do it.
“The thing is that if it’s meant to be it will happen, either way, it is what it is.
“What I can tell you is that my team is talking to Mike’s management, so I’m waiting for a decision. They are communicating right now.
“The thing is I’m still training for this, I know it will be some day this deal will happen and I’m ready for him. I’m doing OK.”
