Boxing legend Claressa Shields thanks Conor McGregor for MMA advice… but names Jon Jones as UFC’s GOAT

But Shields rates Jon Jones as UFC’s Greatest Of All Time.

The 25-year-old American will aim to unify ANOTHER weight division on March 3 when she fights Marie Eve Dicaire for the super-welterweight world titles.
And in June, Shields will take her first steps into MMA when she makes her debut.
In December she signed a multi-fight deal with the PFL promotion but she will not be giving up boxing.
And UFC’s former two-weight world champ McGregor was just one MMA star to offer Shields some advice as she makes the transition with a post on Instagram.

Shields, speaking to Marc Gatford via the Betway Insider blog, said: “It was very welcoming.
“To me, Jon Jones is the GOAT in MMA, but Conor McGregor was considered the GOAT once upon a time too and they’re both great in their own right.
“I just feel when Conor reached out, I feel like in a way he actually cared and he was wishing me good luck and that’s what I appreciated most.
“He didn’t have to give me any advice, he could have just seen it and kept on but instead he was like, ‘I’m going to give out this advice’, and it was great. I took it, I use it and hopefully everything goes as it’s supposed to go.”

McGregor is plotting his own MMA path back to the top and is chasing the trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.
The Irishman fell to a shock KO loss in their February rematch that delayed any hopes he has of fighting for the lightweight title.
And Shields has passed on some of her own advice for how The Notorious can avenge that defeat.
She added: “Conor can avenge it but it’s going to take some hard work. He’s been out of the MMA cage for a while, I know he had his last fight but before his last fight he’d probably been out two or three years.
“I would say he needs to get out of the boxing mindframe to win that fight. He had his front foot too forward, too much weight on his leg, more like a boxer’s stance.

“It’s like he needs to get back to having light feet and [being] quick and explosive, using all his attributes, not just his punches; punches, kicks, knees, he needs to get back being creative.
“But I tell you what, it’s hard to do, it’s hard to cut off the boxing switch and cut on the MMA switch.
“When you’re doing both it’s hard, you have to be very mentally strong and say ‘this is MMA, everything goes’ and then you have to click that button and go to boxing and say ‘this is boxing, there are rules’ so it’s hard and I can just imagine that after being out of the cage for so long that his mind was adjusting and still looking to land those big shots.
“He probably didn’t generate it in his mind, he needs to go his mind and click on the ‘everything’ switch and use every part of the body as a weapon.
“I know he was boxing against Floyd but he needs to cut off the boxing switch and focus strictly on MMA for at least three or four months.”

Billy Joe Saunders ‘has the style’ to beat Canelo as blockbuster unification fight draws near, claims Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN reckons Billy Joe Saunders has ‘the style’ to end Canelo Alvarez’s long unbeaten run.
The WBO super-middleweight champion is set to take on Canelo in a unification fight in May, provided the hard-hitting Mexican gets past Anvi Yildirim this weekend.

And Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn reckons the fleet-footed southpaw has all the tools to hand the pound-for-pound king his first loss in eight years.
Hearn told Fight Hub TV: “Billy Joe Saunders for a long time has said he will beat Canelo Alvarez. He has the style to beat him.
“I’ll tell you one thing, I think if there’s anyone in the division that will beat or could beat Canelo, it’s Billy Joe Saunders — because he has the style and the movement and he has something different in his head.
“No fear. He can come out and he boxes and he moves and he flows, you know.

“Other fighters come out (tense). Same with Yildirim. That’s why this will be a good fight because Yildirim — no fear.
“He’ll come out, take his time, two or three rounds and then Joel Diaz will say to him ‘right, now’s your chance, go for it.’

“And he’ll let his hands go. But that’s very dangerous, but it’s exciting.”

Canelo hasn’t tasted defeat since being schooled by Floyd Mayweather in September 2013.
And although he has full confidence in Saunders, Hearn admits the Brit will go into the contest as a huge underdog.
He added: “I think (Saunders) is an underdog in the fight (against Canelo).

Canelo Alvarez hasn’t tasted defeat since losing to Floyd Mayweather nearly eight years agoCredit: GETTY

“But he may be a guy who has a better chance than anybody to beat him, because he’s a bit crazy and he won’t fear and he’s slick.
“We keep saying Canelo has struggled against slick fighters, but this is when he wasn’t as good as he is now.
“So people talk about the Lara fight, the Floyd Mayweather fight, the Trout fight, but he was 40% of the fighter that he is now.”
Canelo’s mandatory defence of his WBC super-middleweight crown will take place in Miami, Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Ben Askren shares taunting Instagram DMs with Jake Paul as venue for April 17 bout revealed

EX-UFC star Ben Askren has revealed his private back-and-forth with Jake Paul on Instagram.
The former Olympic wrestler, who retired from MMA in November 2019, is gearing up to take on the YouTuber in a boxing match on April 17.

Jake Paul began trolling Ben Askren on social media and even messaged the former UFC star’s wife on InstagramCredit: Instagram @jakepaul

Social media star Paul has used his various platforms to troll Askren but recently took their mental warfare to the next level by direct messaging his opponent’s wife, Amy, on Instagram.
And the pair have now taken their war of words to their direct messages.
On Wednesday, Askren shared a video of his exchange with Paul to Instagram with the accompanying caption: “Man this next generation has some really bad role models!”
The former ONE Championship and Bellator welterweight champion kicked off the exchange, saying: “Hey Jake were you even trying against Ben? That was pathetic

“Hope you try a little bit harder in our fight.”
Paul was quick to respond to the jibe, replying: “Hey bubba!! So good to hear from you!!
“I know [Jorge] Masvidal gave you brain damage so I’m guessing you meant to ask if I was even trying against Nate.

“But instead you put down your own name. Issss okay bubbaa we gonna get you through this fight nice and fast so you can retire after.
    “Here’s something you could try.”
Paul followed up that message with an image of a Teaching Kids to Spell for Dummies book.
Askren responded: “Check my timeline. You got rolled up like a blunt by Ben Darmstadt. It was pathetic.
“Were you even trying or you guys like nuts on your face?”
Incensed by Askren’s reply, Paul once again brought up his opponent’s devastating KO loss to Jorge Masvidal in July 2019.

He said: “Do you remember that you got knocked out in 5 seconds. Or do you just act like it never happened?
“Your head is a c**k magnet. Have you ever smoked a blunt? I really wanna know.
“I’m guessing you lost your virginity to Amy too.”
After Paul urged him to try some molly (ecstasy), Askren signed off by saying: “Hey Jake my life is great, no need to project your self esteem issues on to me.
“If you need to do those things to feel okay about yourself then go for it.”
Askren’s clash with Paul is set to take place in Atlanta, although a venue for their bout has not yet been announced.

Paul is brimming with confidence ahead of the fight, so much so he’s adamant Askren won’t lay a glove on him.
He told ESPN: “Go Google Ben Askren’s striking. Hahaha.
“It’s not going to go that long, it’s not going to go that long.
“I don’t even think he’ll hit me. I haven’t been hit one time in the face in my past two fights.
“So I haven’t even been punched as pro boxer one time. Nate Robinson landed one body shot in a clinch.
“I don’t think Ben Askren will even hit me. That’s my prediction.”

Tyson Fury admits he ‘feels sorry’ for Deontay Wilder after Bronze Bomber’s bizarre rematch excuses

TYSON FURY has struck Deontay Wilder a new blow… by admitting he feels sorry for his former foe.
The Gypsy King completed one of the greatest comebacks in sport when he annihilated the Bronze Bomber 12 months ago to become heavyweight champion of the world once again.

Despite the dominant nature of the result, however, Wilder has since come out with a number of bizarre excuses.
These have included accusing Fury of cheating, sacking his trainer and accusing the referee of being biased.
But rather than come out fighting, the Gypsy King has merely expressed pity.
Asked why Wilder has responded in the way that he has, Fury, 32, told ESPN: “I believe it’s mostly because he’s got a load of a*** kissers in his camp.

“He’s absolutely disappointed me as a man and I feel sorry for him.
“Even if he does come back, I think he’s finished. People are not afraid of him anymore.”
It had been expected that Fury would be dragged back into the ring for a third time by Wilder, owing to a rematch clause in the contract.
But with the clause having expired in October, the Brit has confirmed that the bout is dead in the water.

He added: “As far as I’m concerned, the chapter’s done.
“I beat him twice, absolutely smashed him to pieces the second time. I agreed to about seven dates, none materialised, then the contract expired.
“There’s no fight between me and Wilder.”
Fury is instead expected to face Anthony Joshua next, as he aims to unify the heavyweight belts.
But he has expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the deal over the last 12 months.
He said: “It was just a big mess up.

We’re no further forward today than we were a year ago
    Tyson Fury on AJ negotiations

“I should have boxed, because I’ve been so inactive. I’ve been out for over a year. By the time I fight again, looking at maybe June if this Joshua fight happens, that will be a year and six months out of the ring, which is not ideal preparation for any super fight.
“They’ve had a full year to try and make this fight happen. Since the last Wilder fight, even before the Wilder fight, they were talking about a fight potentially between me and Joshua.
“They’ve had a full year to make something happen and it hasn’t happened as of yet. It is what it is. We’re no further forward today than we were a year ago.
“The way [COVID-19] is at the moment, I don’t think [negotiations] got much to do with the fighters. It’s to do with the venue, date, place, site fees. It’s to do with everything but the fight itself.”

Tyson Fury claims Anthony Joshua fight NO CLOSER to agreement and reveals four main sticking points over talks

TYSON FURY has revealed his frustration at negotiations over a fight with Anthony Joshua being ‘no closer’ to completion than they were a year ago.
The Gypsy King has also revealed the four key sticking points over the deal getting done.

Fury, 32, stormed to victory over Deontay Wilder 12 months ago, securing the WBC heavyweight belt in the process.
But a trilogy bout with the Bronze Bomber has since fallen through, contributing to leaving Fury frustratedly waiting for Joshua on the sidelines.
He told ESPN: “They’ve had a full year to try and make this fight happen.
“Since the last Wilder fight, even before the Wilder fight, they were talking about a fight potentially between me and Joshua.

“They’ve had a full year to make something happen, and it hasn’t happened as of yet.
“It is what it is. We’re no further forward today than we were a year ago.”
Fury then revealed what he believes to be the key obstacles in getting the deal over the line.
He continued: “The way [the pandemic] is at the moment, I don’t think [negotiations] got much to do with the fighters.

“It’s to do with the venue, date, place, site fees. It’s to do with everything but the fight itself.”
Opening up on his frustrating 12 months, Fury said: “It was just a big mess-up. I should have boxed, because I’ve been so inactive. I’ve been out for over a year.
“By the time I fight again, looking at maybe June if this Joshua fight happens, that will be a year and six months out of the ring, which is not ideal preparation for any super-fight.”
SunSport understands the deal is set to be announced at the start of March and a non-disclosure agreement is keeping negotiations top secret.
But should it fall through, Fury remains determined to be active this year.

I will fight two times on ESPN. I don’t care who it is
    Tyson Fury

He added: “If that fight doesn’t happen this summer, it’s got to happen sooner or later.
“But Top Rank has to give me two fights this year. I will fight two times on ESPN. I don’t care who it is.
“If it’s not Joshua, we’re looking to fight in April or early May, and the end of the year.
“If it is Joshua, then June and the end of the year. Bang, bang. So, 2021 is looking bright.”
Saudi Arabia, which hosted AJ’s December 2019 rematch win over Andy Ruiz Jr, is leading the race to hold the British super fight.
America, Qatar, Dubai, Singapore and China have also all expressed their interest in hosting.

CARL FRAMPTON’s long-awaited world title fight with Jamel Herring will take place in Dubai on April 3.

And the pair’s eagerly-anticipated meeting will now take place at The Rotunda Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai in five weeks’ time.
Northern Ireland’s Frampton is champing at the bit to get his hands on Herring and has vowed to put on a show for fans.
He said: “Delighted to get this the new date and venue confirmed, it’s definitely been a rollercoaster to get here and I want to thank my team at MTK Global, Queensberry and Top Rank for getting this over the line.
“This is my chance to make history and fans or no fans, this fight is going to be one fight fans will remember.

“Jamel is a tough opponent but I’ve put the work in, I have a fire lit inside me and I’m confident that this legacy fight will go in my favour on the night, I’ll be leaving it all in the ring.”

Herring, 35, is relishing the prospect of sharing the ring with the former WBA (Super) featherweight champion and believes a win over him will put him on course for ‘bigger and better things’.
He said: “All of the postponements have been frustrating, but I’m happy that this fight is still happening.

“I still have the same hunger I had when this fight will first presented.
“After watching the great performance Oscar Valdez showcased over the weekend, I’m definitely looking forward to making a statement in this exciting division.

“I know a victory over Frampton will lead to bigger and better things down the road.
“But I have to take care of Carl Frampton first and I’m totally focused on defending my title on April 3.”
Frampton, 34, hasn’t set foot inside the ring since his seventh-round TKO victory over Darren Traynor at York Hall last August.
Herring, meanwhile, was last in action last September against Jonathan Oquendo – who was disqualified in the eighth round of their showdown for repeated headbutts.

Hot prospect Keyshawn Davis gives up Olympic dream to debut on Canelo undercard and aims to win title in ‘5-8 fights’

KEYSHAWN DAVIS is already backing himself as the ‘next star’ in boxing – as he gave up his Olympic dreams to debut on Canelo Alvarez’s undercard.
The American amateur sensation was closer than ever to earning a spot on USA’s Tokyo squad for the delayed games in the summer.

Keyshawn Davis is one of the hottest prospects in AmericaCredit: Ed Mulholland/matchroom.

But recognising a gap to fill in the paid ranks with boxing’s elite currently on the sidelines, Davis has turned over and announces himself this weekend.
The 21-year-old told SunSport: “I had a whole entire year to think about staying amateur or going pro.
“I feel like going into 2021, it was a great decision for me to turn pro.
“The whole of 2020, the real top professionals like Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Shakur Stevenson, they were all waiting to fight.

“I feel like if I was to jump in around all the top pro fighters, then my pro debut would have been watered down.
“Going into 2021, everybody’s already fought and I feel like I can be that new fighter coming into the game.
“Not only that, Canelo Alvarez was starting off the year in 2021 and I feel like this is now a great opportunity for me, so I took it.”
Davis had almost 200 amateur bouts, winning silver in the Pan American Games and World Championships.

And in his view, he passed on a guaranteed Olympic medal to instead make his mark in the big time.
Davis said: “It was a very hard decision, it’s the Olympics.
“It’s great to be there and win a medal, everybody knew I was going to win a medal, including myself.
“It was a very hard decision, but I had a whole year to think about it, get over it and move on.”
Davis, from Norfolk, Virginia, was the hottest property in American amateur boxing, due to his quick hands, smart defence and ring IQ way before his years.
He has linked up with promoter Eddie Hearn to debut on the undercard of Canelo’s super-middleweight title defence against Avni Yildirim in Miami.

Keyshawn Davis had nearly 200 amateur bouts

Keyshawn Davis is not yet tied down to a promotional or managerial stable
But lightweight Davis is not yet tied down to a promotional or managerial stable, and ensures his career is well and truly in his own hands currently.
And he backs himself to be good enough to win a world title in just five to eight fights – so long as that is the path he choses.
Davis explained: “It’s on me, it’s up to me on how fast I want to move.
“I feel like I could win a world title in five to eight fights – but it’s on me how fast I want to move.
“Maybe I want to take a little longer than that, maybe I want to go the fast route, it’s really on me.”
Davis last year spent time in Floyd Mayweather’s Las Vegas gym and even sparred in front of the retired legend-turned promoter.

Floyd Mayweather with amateur sensation Keyshawn Davis

Shakur Stevenson pictured with Keyshawn Davis
Mayweather promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe held talks with Davis’ older brother, 1-0 Kelvin, before turning his attention to Keyshawn.
Davis revealed: “We had talks with Leonard Ellerbe, he called my big brother first and then a month later he had a conversation with me.
“They tried to sign me as well.”
According to the prospect, Mayweather and Hearn have not been the only ones expressing their interest in Davis.
He said: “Who wouldn’t want to sign me? It’s a good investment.
“When I was still amateur, not only promoters but fighters were telling me I’m ready to go pro and that I’m going to be a world champion.
“I was the most guaranteed to come into the pros and be the next star or world champion. Who wouldn’t want to sign me?”
Davis graduates from the amateurs having gained valuable experience sparring champions Crawford, Teofimo Lopez, Gervonta Davis, Jamel Herring, and Stevenson.

Terence Crawford, Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis

Jamel Herring Terence Crawford and Keyshawn Davis
He said: “Being in the ring competing with those guys and getting the respect after the sparring, they’d say, ‘You’re ready to go pro now’.
“It gave me a big confidence boost and to go back and work on things to get even sharper going into into the professional game.”
Mayweather’s proteges Davis and Haney both won world honours at just 21, while Lopez became lightweight champion at 22.
But Davis, who turns 22 just days after his debut against Lester Brown, does not feel pressured to replicate their fast-tracked routes to the title.
He said: “I don’t look at people and compare myself, I’m a completely different person.
“I’m coming into the game with something new, something fresh, I can’t really look at those guys as I’m going to be watered down.
“I’m just going to do what I do and what I feel is best for me and challenge myself.” More
