The most shocking and bizarre times boxers have cancelled fights, including Joseph Parker’s spider bite

EVEN by boxing’s standards, former heavyweight world champion Joseph Parker pulling out of his fight against Derek Chisora because of a SPIDER BITE was pretty bonkers.
The Kiwi was was set to meet the Finchley brawler at the O2 back in October 2019 – but was struck down with a mystery illness.

Joseph Parker’s team claim a spider bite caused his mystery illness

His promotion team believed it was caused from a bite by a spider – and the former WBO champ was told to rest for three weeks.
Here, SunSport takes a look at some of the more bizarre events that have led to boxers pulling out of a scheduled fights – one was even when the first bell had rung.
Andres Gutierrez fell in shower (vs Carl Frampton, 2017)
Frampton’s fight against Andres Gutierrez was cancelled 24 hours before their bout after the Mexican boxer fell in the shower.
Gutierrez suffered a deep cut to his face, as well as severe bruising to his nose and head on top of chipping two of his teeth.

The Mexican shared photos of his injuries on his personal Facebook page, apologising for having to pull out of the fight.
The fight was scheduled to take place at the SSE Arena in Belfast, but the whole event ended up being shelved.

Neeraj Goyat injured in car crash (vs Amir Khan, 2019)
Khan’s fight against Neeraj Goyat was called off after his opponent was involved in a horror car crash.
The bout was set to happen in July 2019 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in an “India vs Pakistan” boxing battle.

But Goyat was unable to fight after suffering “severe injuries to his head, face and arm”.
Khan ended up fighting Aussie Billy Dib – and battered him into a fourth-round stoppage.

David Haye’s ‘freak accident’ falling on steps ( vs Tony Bellew II, 2017)
Haye pulled out of his rematch with Tony Bellew after picking up a bicep injury.
The pair were scheduled to clash for the second time on December 17, 2017 at the O2 Arena, but the bout was postponed until the following year.
It was revealed that Haye picked up the injury ‘after a freak accident during a stair conditioning session’.
He insisted he was fully recovered when he took to the ring for Part II looking for revenge for the first defeat in March 2017.
But he was blasted out of there even earlier than the first in May 2018, with the bout waved off in the fifth round.

Steve McCarthy scared of opponent’s mother (vs Tony Wilson II, 1989)
Their first fight will go down in boxing folklore for the utterly bizarre ending.
McCarthy was pummelling Wilson on the ropes when he was clubbed from behind – by his opponent’s mother carrying her high heel.
Despite being left with a gash in his head, McCarthy raised his hands in the air to celebrate. But incredibly he left to get the wound treated and the referee awarded the fight to Wilson by KO.
A rematch was scheduled some months after – but McCarthy, who died in 2017 at the age of 54, pulled out with ‘flu’.
But perhaps it was the prospect of seeing a raging Mrs Wilson again…

Curtis Harper left ring seconds after first bell over pay dispute (vs Efe Ajagba, 2018)
At the sound of the opening bell, Curtis Harper simply walked out of the ring.
It meant rising heavyweight star Efe Ajagba clocked up his sixth consecutive victory without even throwing a punch.
The bonkers stunt left fight fans in the arena stunned, with Harper immediately disqualified for leaving the ring.
There were reports Harper walked out in a protest over pay.

Frankie Gavin foot run over by car (vs Sam Eggington, 2015)
One of Britain’s most decorated amateurs, Gavin’s professional career has been hit by numerous personal issues outside of the ring.
But he was hit, quite literally, just two weeks before his scrap with fellow Brummie Sam Eggington back in 2015.
Gavin was stepping off the kerb when a car ran over his foot.
There was unbelievably no break, but he suffered extensive bruising and had to have injections.
It put pay to the grudge match.

Inside Mike Tyson’s extravagant 52-room mansion he sold to 50 Cent for £3.3m with two pools, studio and nightclub

WHEN Mike Tyson was declared bankrupt in 2003, he was forced to sell up.
With reported debts of £17million, his prized home in Connecticut was one of his first possessions to be sacrificed.

In 2003, Tyson was forced to sell the property for £3.3m after declaring bankruptcyCredit: Douglas Elliman Real Estate

And it would’ve been a bitter pill for the 54-year-old to swallow, looking at the mega mansion.
Boasting 52 rooms, including 21 bedrooms, as well as its own nightclub the property is as lavish as Tyson has ever owned.
But it was needs must for the heavyweight boxing legend and in came rapper 50 Cent who bought it from him for £3.3m the same year it was revealed he blew his fortune.
    PROPERTY DEETS
When the In da Club singer bought the house from Tyson, it set a record for the most expensive home ever sold in the area of Farmington – and it’s easy to see why.

Along with those 21 bedrooms we mentioned earlier, the 50,000-square-foot abode has a 25 bathrooms, an indoor pool and hot tub, an indoor court, multiple game rooms, a green-screen room, and a recording studio.
And the opulence doesn’t end there.
Entering the property through a stately front gate, you’re greeted by a lion statue.
Walking into the home on the marble floor, a duelling wood-panelled staircase leads you to another level of the property.

As can be seen, the decor is as lavish as it gets throughout the property.

The master bedroom has a scenic view of the garden landscape.
From there, you have your own steel staircase that leads to another floor that features a massive walk-in closet with glass doors, so you can see your designer wardrobe.
One of the many en-suites has a huge bathtub that overlooks the gardens, and it also features a glass door shower.
    THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT
The home is fit for someone who loves having friends round.
There are outdoor and indoor basketball courts that complete the recreational feel to the property.
There’s a room with pool tables, and another games room with poker and roulette tables – meaning you’ll never have to go to Las Vegas again.
Next to the outdoor basketball court is a pond that has an elaborate water feature spouting out and a guesthouse.
However, this property does have a chequered history in sales.

    TOO EXPENSIVE
Over the years, the property has dropped in value rapidly – mostly because of its running costs that 50 cent complained cost him around £50,000-per-month.
In fact, it was on the market for 12 years – starting at £14million before it was finally sold last year for just £2.3million – an 84 per cent price drop.
“It’s just oversized for the market,” estate agent Jonathan Miller told Realtor.com.
“When you have a property that is well outside the norm, it takes a lot longer to sell.”
In the end, it was reportedly snapped up by US businessman Casey Askar, who owns several fast-food businesses.
Another of Mike Tyson’s amazing homes, complete with cages for his tigers, was left abandoned before it was converted into a church.

Andy Ruiz Jr shows off incredible body transformation as Anthony Joshua conqueror sheds weight with new trainer

ANDY RUIZ JR has proudly shown off his incredible body transformation on Instagram.
The Mexican-American fighter, 31, hasn’t set foot in the ring since his loss to Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia in December 2019.

That night, Ruiz tipped the scales at a monster 20st 3lbs after admitting a weakness for Snickers bars.
But Ruiz is now putting in the hard graft in gym with a fight against Chris Arreola in the spring on the cards.
In the build-up to the proposed fight, the California-born boxer has switched trainers and has now been taken under Eddy Reynoso’s wing.
And Ruiz showed off his leaner physique in a short video on Instagram.

Filmed from a flattering angle above his own head, he captioned the clip: “Workout done.”
It’s not the first time Ruiz has left fans’ jaws on the floor with his workout videos.
Just last week, the boxer – who beat AJ in their first fight in New York in June 2019 – showed off his brutal left hook.
It was the same punch that caused Joshua so many problems in their first encounter as he ripped away his WBA, WBO and IBF belts.

Ruiz also confirmed he will soon be back in action.
He captioning the training video: “We working hard, fight date coming soon.”
Last month, Ruiz even admitted he hopes to have a third and final fight with Joshua having won the first and lost the rematch.
Ruiz claimed: “I’d like to fight the rematch again, the third fight with Anthony Joshua, and either between Wilder and Tyson Fury.
“Nobody thought I’d be champion of the world with the way I looked.
“I want to get back at it and be the man I’m supposed to be.
“And I don’t have a fight date yet, but I’m for sure going to fight this year.
“I just want to be in shape and show everybody… this little chubby boy is going to look good.”

But Mexican trainer Jorge Catepillo – who was in Ruiz Jr’s corner for his early fights – is just desperate for the 33-2 boxer to get back to competing.
He told Sky Sports: “A fighter never loses because they get knocked down. They lose because they don’t get up.
“I want Andy to prove to himself that it was not a lucky shot.
“Because it was not lucky, let me tell you, because Joshua went down but got back up.
“Joshua didn’t run. But you saw what happened.
“I would love to see Andy as a champion again.”

Errol Spence Jr’s top five pound-for-pound list has Canelo Alvarez as No1, but where does he place himself?

ERROL SPENCE JR revealed his top five pound-for-pound list – but left himself off the top with Canelo Alvarez as No1.
The unified WBC and IBF welterweight champion beat Danny Garcia by unanimous decision on December 5 in his last fight.

Spence believes he is the best in his division, above Terence Crawford, who beat Kell Brook in devastating fashion in his last fight.
But the modest Texan is not yet hailing himself as the greatest fighter on the planet just yet.
Here, he explains his top five to Fox Sports.
    Canelo Alvarez – 54–1–2
Errol Spence Jr: Canelo Alvarez, I’d put him as number one because he’s won titles at 154, 160, 168 and 175.

    Roman Gonzalez – 50–2
ES: Number two, I’ll put ‘Chocolatito’. I’m a big fan of his.
I just feel like he’s a great fighter and I don’t think he gets the due that he deserves for beating a lot of opponents in the way he beats opponents.

    Errol Spence Jr – 27-0
ES: Number three, I’d put myself.
Because I’m just a great fighter, I have fought the best in my weight class, I’ve beaten them and I’m the unified champion.

Hopefully I will become undisputed champion in a year or two.

    Terence Crawford – 37-0
ES: Number four, I’d put Terence Crawford.
He’s won titles from 130 to 147. Great fighter, he got good skills.

    Claressa Shields – 10-0
ES: Number five, I’ll put Claressa Shields.
You know, great fighter, won titles in multiple divisions put on shutout performances and just an excellent fighter.
If she could, she could fight men and beat them.

    PARKER VS FA
What a weekend of boxing we’ve got ahead of us.
Canelo Alvarez returns to the ring tomorrow night, but before all that it’s time for the heavyweights to take centre stage.
It seems like a lifetime ago that Joseph Parker took on both Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte, losing both as the Kiwi’s grip on the world title loosened.
But you can’t keep a good fighter down for long, and three wins later the giant New Zealander is back in the ring tonight.
He faces a dust-up with fellow countryman Junior Fa, an unbeaten prospect who hasn’t been seen in the ring since November 2019.
This will be the biggest test of his career tonight against the big-punching Parker, who is back in Auckland for the first since facing – and beating – former world champ Andy Ruiz Jr in 2016.
It’s set to be a bumper night of action, with the card getting going around 6am GMT.
We’ll be bringing you every hook, jab and upper-cut as it happens – so prepare yourself for breakfast boxing.
