Anthony Joshua ranks Canelo Alvarez as No1 P4P boxer in world as Eddie Hearn calls him ‘best he’s ever seen up close’

EDDIE HEARN revealed Canelo Alvarez is the best fighter he has ‘ever seen up close’ with Anthony Joshua rating the Mexican as boxing’s No1.
Hearn has promoted Canelo’s last two fight, against Matchroom’s Callum Smith and Turkish mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim.

After beating Smith, Alvarez signed a two-fight deal with AJ’s promoter, with the second coming against Billy Joe Saunders on May 8.
It will be the fourth time he has fought a Hearn-promoted star, following wins over Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs.
And having failed in every attempt to dethrone the pound-for-pound No1, Hearn has been left in awe of the four-division champion.
He said: “There’s no debate that Canelo Alvarez is the pound-for-pound number one and he continues to fight the best.

“I’ve been around the sport for 34 years and I do feel like a fan-boy around Canelo Alvarez because he’s the best fighter I’ve ever seen up close.
“Anthony Joshua will always be my No1, but AJ looks at Canelo Alvarez and said this guy is the pound-for-pound number one.”
Following a 12-round domination against Smith, 30, in December, Canelo won the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine super-middleweight belts.
And he will unify them against WBO champ Saunders in the summer, with IBF champion Caleb Plant, 28, eyed after that.

Canelo is also top of Ring Magazine’s mythical P4P ranking, having lost just once in his 58 fights, against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

With Alvarez dreaming of ending the year as undisputed champ, hopes of a trilogy bout with Gennady Golovkin, 38, have been dashed.
GGG and Canelo had a pair of thrillers at middleweight, with the first ending in a draw and Alvarez winning the rematch a year later.
But along with his trainer Eddy Reynoso, they are only interested in title unifications, with Golovkin instead lined up to face Jaime Munguia, 24, or Ryota Murata, 35.
Hearn said: “The focus of Canelo and Eddy is to be undisputed champion, and if we were to follow that line, it goes with Saunders in May, with Plant in September.
“The fight with Golovkin remains there as one great fight, but right now Canelo has history and legacy on his mind.
“Golovkin-Munguia would be a great fight, Golovkin and Murata could be at the end of the year, in December, so Munguia with Golovkin would be full of action, it would be a very big fight, but maybe not in May.”

Billy Joe Saunders lacks power to earn Canelo Alvarez’s ‘respect’, says Callum Smith as he writes off Brit’s chances

CALLUM SMITH fears Billy Joe Saunders lacks the power to earn Canelo Alvarez’s ‘respect’.
WBO champion Saunders is aiming to unify his belt with Canelo’s WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine titles on May 8.

It comes after the Mexican superstar won the straps by beating Smith in December and defended them against Avni Yildirim.
Despite Saunders’ slick, southpaw style and unbeaten record, his fellow Brit has written off his chances to ‘put a dent’ in Canelo.
Smith, 30, told Sky Sports: “Everybody always said me and Billy Joe had styles to trouble him but in completely different ways because we are completely different fighters.
“Billy Joe has got movement, he’s a southpaw, a bit awkward and can probably stay out of trouble.

“But I don’t know if he’s got anything to keep Canelo off – enough power.
“Canelo is hard to hit clean and I don’t know if Billy Joe has enough to get his respect, and put a dent in him.
“I see Canelo finding a way. Walking him down, starting to land as the fight goes on.
“I will always back a Brit but I don’t think anyone beats Canelo.”

Saunders, 31, comes into the unification having boxed just once in 2020, sending Martin Murray, 38, into retirement.
Canelo, 30, meanwhile cemented himself as the No1 super-middleweight in the world and a full-fledged four-weight champion after victory over Smith.
That night, despite giving away five inches in height and having the reach advantage, Liverpool’s brave challenger was out-jabbed.
Smith has warned Saunders just how devastating Canelo is in defence and attack, which has led the pound-for-pound king to SIX wins against Brits.

He said: “He is very clever in terms of the jab.
“He walks you down. With anybody else, you would jab. But he wants you to jab because he’s a counter-puncher.
“So you don’t throw as many jabs and while you are waiting, he closes the space down without throwing anything.
“Then he jabs and hits you. You think: ‘How did that land?’. He keeps you guessing all the time. You are hesitant.
“His best asset was his presence and his defence. He was so hard to hit clean.
“When I was throwing he was riding them, making me miss. You aren’t landing so you stop fully committing to shots.
“He takes away what you are good at.”

Conor McGregor’s fight vs Floyd Mayweather affecting UFC career as he focuses on boxing instead of MMA, says Shields

CONOR McGREGOR has been urged by Claressa Shields to ‘cut off the boxing switch’ and focus solely on MMA.
McGregor lost his ring debut in 2017 against Floyd Mayweather but returned to the UFC a year later, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

After defeat to rival Khabib, the Irishman returned to his first ever gym, the Crumlin amateur boxing club, and worked with his old coaches.
They have since become part of his team and McGregor has adopted a more boxing-based style, opposed to his previous karate stance.
But after he was knocked out Dustin Poirier in January, the southpaw admitted to focussing too much on boxing.
And undisputed champion Shields, 25, has warned McGregor to hit reset and go back to basics and polish his entire set of skills.

She told the Betway Insider blog: “He probably didn’t generate it in his mind, he needs to go his mind and click on the ‘everything’ switch and use every part of the body as a weapon.
“I know he was boxing against Floyd but he needs to cut off the boxing switch and focus strictly on MMA for at least three or four months.”
McGregor, 32, was in line for a mega-money boxing return to face Manny Pacquiao, 42, this year.
But after losing in a rematch to Poirier, 32, seven years after stopping the American, they are now in talks for a summer trilogy.

CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: CLAIM UP TO £800 IN CASINO BONUS CASH

Shields, who herself has transitioned to MMA after signing for PFL, backed McGregor to win the rematch, but only after making tactical changes.
She said: “Conor can avenge it but it’s going to take some hard work.
“He’s been out of the MMA cage for a while, I know he had his last fight but before his last fight he’d probably been out two or three years.
“I would say he needs to get out of the boxing mind-frame to win that fight.
“He had his front foot too forward, too much weight on his leg, more like a boxer’s stance.

Conor McGregor was knocked out by Dustin PoirierCredit: Sportsfile – Subscription
“It’s like he needs to get back to having light feet and [being] quick and explosive, using all his attributes, not just his punches; punches, kicks, knees, he needs to get back being creative.
“But I tell you what, it’s hard to do, it’s hard to cut off the boxing switch and cut on the MMA switch.
“When you’re doing both it’s hard, you have to be very mentally strong and say ‘this is MMA, everything goes’ and then you have to click that button and go to boxing and say, ‘This is boxing, there are rules’.
“So it’s hard and I can just imagine that after being out of the cage for so long that his mind was adjusting and still looking to land those big shots.”

Derek Chisora slams standard of British boxing judges and ‘shambles’ scorecards after latest farce at Matchroom show

DEREK CHISORA has hit out at the standard of officiating in Britian following Zelfa Barrett’s wide points win against Kiko Martinez.
The heavyweight star has criticised the ‘shambles’ scorecards after a battered and bruised Barrett was somehow awarded the victory against the Spaniard.

Steve Gray, Bob Williams and Howard Foster scored the bout 118-111, 118-111 and 116-113 in Barrett’s favour, who many believed should have lost.
Commenting on last month’s decision, Chisora told talkSPORT: “I think boxing has changed. You know, as fighters we fight and we train hard.
“But when guys wake up and go from their house and go to the side of the ring and wear their glasses and have a cup of tea.
“Then they start judging when these guys are going at it, toe-to-toe.

“And then they give those kind of shambles scorecards? That is bad.”
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn also hit out at the judges awarding Barrett the win, despite the super-featherweight competing under his banner.
Fearing decisions like that may stop boxers from fighting in the UK, Hearn said: “It was very close but 118-111 is absolutely disgusting for Martinez.
“If Zelfa won, he won it by one or two rounds. 118-111 does nobody any favours.

CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: CLAIM UP TO £800 IN CASINO BONUS CASH

“How will we bring world-class fighters to this country with scorecards like that?
“After all that effort Martinez might as well have boxed off his back foot and had an easy night.”
Chisora – who hasn’t fought since being outpointed by Oleksandr Usyk in October – has been called out by Joseph Parker.
Taking to Twitter after his victory against Junior Fa, he tweeted: “Haha @DerekWarChisora getting cocky are we?
“You’ve barely fought out of the UK, never out of Europe, and scared to visit New Zealand!
“Come down to NZ if you think you’ve got what it takes donkey.
    “I’ll finish this anywhere.”

Fame-driven Mike Tyson reveals biggest drug in world is the ‘camera’ despite lifetime battling cocaine addiction

MIKE TYSON revealed the biggest drug in world is the ‘camera’ – despite his prior battle with cocaine addiction.
Tyson burst on to the scene in 1986 becoming the youngest heavyweight champion of all time aged just 20.

Mike Tyson revealed the biggest drug in the world is the ‘camera’

But he admitted to struggling with the fame and fortune that came with it as he lost his prime athletic years to substance abuse.
Now, aged 54 and free from cocaine and alcohol, Tyson opened up on the danger of being fame-driven and too egotistical.
He said on his podcast: “I think the biggest narcotic in the world is just this camera, I think that beats sugar.
“Yeah, great, smart people just couldn’t stop loving themselves too much.”

Tyson, who spent three years in prison from 1992 for a rape charge he still fiercely denies, admitted to using drugs up until and after his 2005 retirement.
But following the launch of his Hotboxin podcast in 2019, the celebrated puncher stopped taking cocaine and drinking alcohol.
It allowed him to dramatically transform his body at the start of 2020 as he announced a shock comeback.
Tyson later went on to draw with fellow icon Roy Jones Jr, 52, over eight exhibition rounds.

Iron Mike is sensationally now lined up for a trilogy bout against Evander Holyfield, 58, which comes 24 years after he bit his old rival’s ear.
Despite managing to return to boxing and living on the straight and narrow, Tyson’s years of seeking fame almost brought him to the brink of death.
He recalled: “This is a drug, man. I got so caught up with this stuff – almost killed myself.
“Thinking I was somebody really special. You know, really, really, thinking I’m really special.
“I had to have – what’s that s*** called? Preferential treatment. I was thinking I had to do that stuff.”

Ben Askren threatens to ‘humiliate’ Jake Paul in upcoming fight as training footage emerges of ex-UFC star boxing

BEN ASKREN has promised to ‘humiliate’ Jake Paul in their upcoming fight as footage of the ex-UFC star training emerged.
The retired former MMA champion makes his boxing debut on April 17, facing 2-0 Paul.

Ben Askren pictured during a boxing session

Ben Askren released sparring footage as he prepares to fight Jake Paul

Askren, renowned for his grappling, has been preparing for the bout with coach Cornelius Bundrage, an ex-boxing champion.
Recent videos show the pair training together, drilling shadow boxing and pad work.
Askren, 36, then gave the biggest insight yet into his camp by posting a clip of a sparring session.
The American comes into the fight having won welterweight titles with Bellator and ONE Championship before signing for the UFC in 2019.

But after three bouts, and two losses, Askren hung up his gloves and underwent hip surgery last year.
YouTuber Paul, 24, turned pro in 2020, having only boxed once before in an exhibition bout in 2018.
But he already has two knockouts in as many fights, although he only beat online rival ‘AnEsonGib’ and ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 36.
Despite Askren’s lifetime of experience in MMA, his lack of proven striking skills leave him as the betting underdog.

But still he has warned that he will beat Paul into an ugly submission.
Askren said: “I feel great, just tremendous. Boxing stuff is really starting to come together.
“I can’t promise you it’s going to be the prettiest thing you ever saw – although my face is pretty – my combat skills are not, they are unique, they are different.
“But here’s what I can tell you; you will witness the humiliation of Jake Paul. You will witness one man breaking another man’s will.
“And that man Jake Paul, will give up and be humiliated in front of millions of people, live on Triller on April 17th.”

Andy Ruiz Jr to make ring return after 16-months out against Chris Arreola on shock PPV card after body transformation

ANDY RUIZ JR is set to make his long-awaited ring return on April 24 in a shock pay-per-view bout against Chris Arreola.
The Mexican-American has not fought since December 2019, when he lost an immediate rematch against Anthony Joshua.

According to BoxingScene, his comeback fight will come 16-months on from when his short spell as unified heavyweight champion came to an end.
And he is lined up to face Arreola, who turns 40 this week, the man who was knocked out by ex-WBC king Deontay Wilder in 2016.
The American has only fought three times since that defeat, with his current record standing at 38–6–1 with two no-contests.
Like Ruiz, Arreola has not been seen since December 2019, in a losing effort against Adam Kownacki.

But he has long been touted as Ruiz’s comeback opponent, with talks progressing for over a year.
In the US, the heavyweight fight is understood to be on a Fox PPV card, to the surprise of many, with no word yet on whether it will be the headliner.
Ruiz, 31, shot to fame in June 2019, when he stepped in for drug cheat Jarrell Miller, 32, and challenged Joshua, 31.
He pulled off a stunning upset, dropping AJ four times in New York on the way to a seventh round stoppage.

But Ruiz ballooned up to 20 STONE for the rematch in Saudi Arabia and laboured to a points loss over 12-rounds.
Since then, he has switched training camps and linked up with Canelo Alvarez’s esteemed coach Eddy Reynoso in their adopted San Diego base.
And Ruiz appears to be reaping the rewards, with a recent picture showing the underdog hero trimmer than ever before.
