Jake Paul ‘getting even better’ claims sparring partner Hasim Rahman Jr ahead of Ben Askren fight

JAKE PAUL is rapidly improving as a professional fighter ahead of his bout with Ben Askren, his sparring partner has revealed.
The YouTuber has two knockouts in as many bouts since turning over in 2020.

Hasim Rahman Jr – whose dad Sr famously knocked out Lennox Lewis – sparred before both of Paul’s two fights, with his brother Logan, 25, too.
And he hailed BJ Flores – an ex-cruiserweight contender – for his work as trainer and predicts the social media star will continue KOing opponents if he gets to handpick them.
Rahman Jr, 29, told Pro Boxing Fans: “I sparred Jake twice and the first time was like almost night and day the second time.
“The first time he was just learning, the second time was obviously months later and he definitely has dedicated himself to the craft of boxing and you can see the results in his sparring.

“He’s definitely throwing his punches better and sitting down on his punches. BJ has done a great job and he’s learning and he’s getting better.
“[The] proof is in the pudding. He even looked better from his first fight to his second fight, even though you couldn’t see much.
“Don’t sleep on Jake Paul he really trains, he really takes it serious and I think he’s going to keep knocking these guys out.
“If they keep letting him pick his opponents, he’s going to keep knocking them out.”

Paul, 24, debuted last January stopping online rival ‘AnEsonGib’ before leaving ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 36, flattened in November.
He faces his first big step up in competition on April 17, fighting retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren.
But Askren, 36, was renowned for his limited striking style but dominant wrestling and grappling skills.
As a result, Paul is the betting favourite to add the biggest name yet to his record and another highlight reel to his collection.
And Rahman Jr is in agreement, as he said: “Ben Askren, he’s probably going to get knocked out.
“Jake grew up fighting, I think he was a state champion wrestler.

Logan Paul, Hasim Rahman Jr and Jake Paul
“He has experience in combat, he’s not just like foreign to getting hit and that’s what people sleep on.
“People think that he just picked this up out of nowhere and he’s trying to semi work his way up.
“No, he’s dedicated to it, he’s dedicated to not being embarrassed when they turn on them lights.
“I wish him much continued success. He’s going to keep shocking a lot of people.”
Recently Paul has been involved in an internet feud with 5-0 Tommy Fury, the half-brother to WBC heavyweight champion Tyson, 32.
Light-heavyweight Tommy, 21, his trainer and dad John as well as promoter Frank Warren have all expressed their interest in fighting Paul.

And it would be the first time the millionaire vlogger would have fought an established fighter.
But Rahman Jr backed Paul to to take inspiration from his dad, the two-time champ who upset Lewis in April 2001, but lost the rematch seven months later.
He said: “I think that if he continues what he’s doing, if he continues to do that, you can’t put anything past any man.
“Maybe he could compete with the boxers, maybe he’ll shock somebody, you never know.
“If he keeps doing what he does, there’s no reason to count him out in any fight. I come from the Rahman family, so we already know when people get slept on that’s when they wake up the world.
“So, don’t sleep on that he can fight, you better stop sleeping on him he can fight.”

Anthony Joshua ‘will do a job’ on Tyson Fury and is tailoring training regime to beat rival as fight nears, claims Hearn

AJ and Fury are finally set to step into the ring this year to put all the heavyweight belts on the line.
Hearn reckons it could be one of the ‘biggest fights of all time’ but is naturally backing his man to do the business.
He told Sky Sports: “Anthony would say that he’s tailoring his training for his career.
“He is training, sleeping, resting. I want to rein him in for a rest.

“He is so focused. Although he’d tell you that he’s training just to improve as a fighter, I know that all he’s thinking about is Fury.
“He’s working on the plan to beat this guy and become undisputed.
“I love the work he’s doing, the improvements he’s making, the mind-set.
“He has the mind-set of a winner, of a champion.

“Fury is a fantastic fighter but AJ will do a job on him.
“The preparation starts now. Don’t think Fury isn’t doing the same. He knows. This may be the biggest fight of all time.”

The blockbuster bout is expected to take place this summer.
June was originally pencilled in but with UK lockdown restrictions potentially lifting at the end of the month, it may get pushed back to July.
A two-fight deal, which will see both men split the purse from their first meeting evenly, was agreed last June with contract negotiations near completion.
    ‘NEARLY THERE’
Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum told The Daily Mirror: “We’re nearly there.
“As far as I can ascertain, there are no issues separating the two sides. There has been consensus agreement in all issues.
“We hope very shortly that the fight will be signed. Then we will pick the site and we’ll be up and running.
“I’m looking towards late June or early July for the actual fight to take place.”
Arum’s update on the potential date for the fight comes a few days after he revealed the fine details of the £200million bout had been ironed out.

Peter Fury believes Joshua can knock out Tyson and gives AJ advice on how he can win Battle of Britain

ANTHONY JOSHUA could knock out Tyson Fury, according to the Gypsy King’s uncle and former trainer Peter.
Peter Fury was in attendance in December as his son Hughie beat Mariusz Wach on the AJ vs Kubrat Pulev undercard.

Peter Fury reckons Anthony Joshua could knock out his nephew Tyson

He then watched on as Joshua emphatically beat Pulev – knocking him out in the ninth with a devastating straight right.
Focus has now switched to this year’s potential Battle of Britain between Joshua and Tyson.
But speaking in the aftermath of the AJ win, Peter warned his nephew about the Londoner’s devastating power.
Asked for his thoughts on the unification bout, Peter said: “It will be a great fight.

“Both up for it, aren’t they. So it’ll be a great fight if it happens. Both have different styles though, Tyson is a totally different style to Pulev.
“It would be a great fight. Those shots [AJ landed wouldn’t be landing on Tyson so clean. He’s an exceptional talent but if AJ can land, anyone is going down.
“But the same for Tyson – he’s a puncher as well. So it works both ways. It’s a pick’em fight to be honest.”
Joshua and Fury will reportedly bag £100MILLION EACH if the fight is held in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are believed to be in the race to host the bout which is expected to be staged in June.
A deal could be done imminently once minor tweaks to the contracts are ironed out.
British fans are desperate for it to be staged in the UK although that looks increasingly unlikely due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Wherever the fight of a lifetime is put on, it is sure to be an epic and Fury offered advice to AJ on how he might improve against his nephew.
Fury added: “I think he’s a little bit hesitant in there. I think when he fires those jabs, he needs to fire them in combinations and let his hands go.
“He didn’t seem to let his hands go much tonight in there, but when he did let them go he was lethal. He waited too long for me. But every fighter has things to work on.
“For me, he’s too upright. There’s no lateral movement, he needs a lot more of that because Tyson has got a lot of that. He’s got that in abundance, actually. He can bend right down there and fire a shot! He’s very awkward.
“Listen, Lennox Lewis is the last undisputed heavyweight champion. The fans want to see this fight so let it happen. I think it would be a great fight.”

Oleksandr Usyk mocks Joe Joyce – claiming he’d fight Brit in UK, Ukraine or MARS in hilarious tweet

OLEKSANDR USYK has told heavyweight rival Joe Joyce he will fight him on MARS in a typically hilarious tweet.
The 34-year-old Ukrainian, who is known for his sharp wit, is expected to face Briton Joyce later this year.

Usyk and Joyce were rivals in the amateurs and fought over five rounds in the World Series of Boxing eight years ago.
As talk of a fight between Joyce and Usyk hots up, the Brit nudged the 2012 Olympic gold medalist on social media.
He said: “Ah you’re alive, you couldn’t fill a bath in Kiev let alone a stadium, see you in the UK very soon. PS I miss you.”
Usyk then replied on Twitter by saying: “My friend I am ready to continue teaching you boxing even on Mars.

“I hope you have improved since the last time our meeting. Miss you too.”
Alongside his message he put out an image of the pair on the Red planet – alongside a ring and rocket.
Joyce later replied with an image of his own, mocked up in an astronaut’s suit with the Union Jack planted in Mars.
The Londoner wrote: “I’m ready Usyk…”

How Usyk and Joyce match up ahead of their potential 2021 showdown
The pair could be set to clash for the WBO world title if the winner of Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury vacates the belt.
This is because AJ and Fury will be contracted to rematch one another, something that will not be possible with the WBO strap on the line – with Usyk set as the mandatory challenger.
Usyk, who showed himself training against two men earlier this week, is undefeated in 18 fights since turning pro.
He moved up to heavyweight after becoming undisputed cruiserweight champion in 2018 and has already produced a statement win in the division against Britain’s Dereck Chisora.
Meanwhile, Joyce also boasts a perfect pro record of 12-0 and earned his biggest victory in November of last year against Daniel Dubois.

Ali vs Frazier was fifteen pulsating rounds of skill & brutality that had us in thrall from first bell to last

THE caller from Frankfurt asked if I  was willing to  be interviewed by a German TV station about the first Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight that took place  50 years ago tomorrow.
And the reason I was contacted is sobering to say the least.

Joe Frazier eventually kept his unbeaten record with a final round stoppage winCredit: AP:Associated Press

Beaten Muhammad Ali recovered from this beating to land two revenge wins over Joe Frazier in one of sport’s greatest ever rivalriesCredit: AP:Associated Press

I happen to be one of the few boxing writers at New York’s Madison Square Garden ringside that exceptional night who is still alive.
It doesn’t seem possible that half a century has passed since Ali and Frazier had the world holding its breath waiting for the opening bell to sound in what was legitimately called the Fight of the Century.
The word ‘sensational’ is nowhere near adequate to describe the anticipation before and during an event that did not just transcend  boxing but transcended sport.
There couldn’t have been a more perfect scenario that led to an occasion that was a mixture of a Broadway musical first night, an Oscar ceremony and Mardi Gras.

Ali, the most famous sportsman on Earth, was on his way back after being stripped of his world heavyweight title and exiled for 3½  years for refusing to be drafted into the US military in protest at the Vietnam war.
Frazier, while Ali was away, won the world heavyweight crown and was recognised as undisputed champ.
It was the first time two unbeaten men had fought for the richest prize in sport and the global interest was total and unprecedented.
If proof were needed just how much this clash captured the imagination, Russia — where pro boxing was banned — changed the habit of a lifetime and sent two national news agency journalists to cover it.

There were serious political overtones to the fight as it had grabbed the attention of the non-sporting public throughout the United States.
Ali was being willed to win by the growing anti-war lobby, while Frazier had the whole-hearted support of  pro-war conservatives in the country.
This grudge match was promoted by Jerry Perenchio and Jack Kent Cooke, who had no previous connection with boxing.
Perenchio was  boss of a showbiz management company whose clients included  Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Cooke was  owner of the Los Angeles Lakers  basketball team and also had a large stake in NFL’s  Washington Football Team.
Between them, they agreed to pay Ali and Frazier  a mind-boggling $2.5million each.
Everything to do with the fight — the finances in particular — smashed all  records.
The live crowd of 20,455 paid $1.5m. Cheapest ticket was $20,  dearest an unheard of $150.
To emphasise how times have changed, when Floyd Mayweather met Manny Pacquiao it cost $1,330 to sit in the gods and $6,650 ringside.

There was no pay-per-view back then. It was shown on closed-circuit TV in 500 outlets in the US and 2.5m people paid $45m to watch it.In London, it was shown in several cinemas in the middle of the night and there were 90,000 viewers.
The delayed TV broadcast  was seen by 300million viewers.
From the moment I arrived in Manhattan a week before hostilities, tension in the Ali and Frazier camps was palpable.
Both fighters received death threats and the NYPD were guarding them round the clock.
There were 760 accredited journalists, another 500 had  applications refused. Among us were literary giants Budd Schulberg, George Plimpton and Norman Mailer.
When the British press corps  collected our credentials from the Garden’s  press chief John Condon, he handed out red baseball caps with each pass.
Peter Wilson, an old Harrovian and Britain’s best-known sportswriter, asked what they  were for.
Condon said: “To wear at ringside.” Wilson, who could be pompous, said: “I wouldn’t be seen dead wearing a baseball cap.”
Condon advised: “I would if I were you, Peter.  There will be 5,000 outside without tickets trying to gatecrash.

Never before, or since, have so many Hollywood stars and overdressed Guys and Dolls been in the VIP section at a fight. Mafia family members must have made offers that couldn’t be refused to get tickets.

“If there’s a riot,  cops will want to know which heads to hit and which heads not to hit.”
Needless to say, we sat with  caps firmly on heads. I still have mine.Fans inside the Garden waiting for the gladiators to enter were in a frenzy bordering on hysteria.
Sadly, it proved too much for  two poor men who died from heart failure  before they saw a blow struck.
Never before, or since, have so many Hollywood stars, leading politicians and overdressed Guys and Dolls been seen in the VIP  section at a prize fight.
Several Mafia family members  must have made offers that couldn’t be refused to get their hands on tickets.
Sitting  my side of the ring were Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman, Sammy Davis Jr, Aretha Franklin, George Raft, David Frost, Count Basie, Senator Teddy  Kennedy and former Vice- President Hubert Humphrey.
Francis Albert Sinatra did it his way. He was so anxious to get as close to the action as possible, he got assigned as a press photographer for Life  magazine so he could be up on the ring apron.

There was one moment when the hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention. More than 20,000 people suddenly stood to a man.
They had spied the immortal Joe Louis  and  roared their applause as he walked to his seat — and  didn’t stop applauding until he sat down.
It seemed, after all the hype, the fight couldn’t possibly live up to the billing. But it was even better than anyone could have dreamed of.
For 15 pulsating rounds Ali and Frazier fought a  war of attrition. And with a combination of skill mixed with brutality, they had us in their thrall from first bell to last.
When Frazier floored Ali with a  left hook in the last round, it left no doubt in anyone’s mind  there was only one winner — he thoroughly deserved the unanimous points  decision. Neither man could attend the post-fight press conference.
The right side of Ali’s face was so swollen, he looked as if he was  trying to swallow a large grapefruit, and  was taken off to  hospital for an X-ray.
Frazier was in a far worse state. He was taken straight back to his hotel and stayed in his room for several days before being admitted to hospital for a few weeks to recover.
His blood pressure was so dangerously high,  doctors thought he was about to have a stroke. For days he couldn’t urinate, couldn’t stand, walk or eat and drink.
There was speculation  Ali’s ego couldn’t live with him losing his unbeaten record. But nothing could have been further from the truth.

He insisted on meeting the press as he lay in his hotel bed the next morning. Ali said: “I just lost a fight, that’s all. There are more important things to worry about in life.”
I doubt if today’s boxing fans who are under 60 can appreciate just how big that Ali-Frazier fight was and how good they were.
I just feel blessed to have had the opportunity to have been there to report it for SunSport.

Tommy Fury must dodge big-money Jake Paul fight if Love Island star wants to be taken seriously as a boxer

TOMMY FURY’S latest KO win and seismic social media impacts have everybody excited – except boxing fans.
On Saturday night the gorgeous 21-year-old Love Island ace flexed all of his many, many muscles to dispatch Scott Williams inside two rounds.

Tommy Fury is a perfect 5-0 as a pro and now appears to be chasing Jake PaulCredit: Getty Images – Getty

With his 3.3million Instagram followers, celebrity girlfriend, legendary fighting family and boy-next-door-charm, the highlight reel win should have been the main event of the prime time show.
Broadcasters BT Sport – just like Sky Sports and everybody else – are crying out for a crossover talent like TNT to blow away barriers between sport and reality TV.
But Fury’s opponent arrived with a record of 0-9 and is now the fifth opponent cherry picked to have no chance of troubling the starlet.
The record of Fury’s first five opponents is currently 12 wins, 5 draws and 175 losses.

And this most recent installment was only announced as Fury’s latest whipping boy around 24 hours before the bout
It leaves BT Sport and promoter Frank Warren simply unable to build any serious sporting hype or rivalry for the ring Adonis.
And explains why, despite the sort of following that could make viewing figures flutter, Tommy’s bout came just after three young debutants and before a part-time teacher.
Thankfully in the aftermath, Jake Paul – either the saviour of 21st Century boxing or the utter dismal death of it – sparked some trash talk with the Manchester man.

BET OF THE DAY: GET £60 IN FREE BETS BY BETTING £10 ON RACE ONE AT DONCASTER THIS SATURDAY

Just a couple of days after reminding the world of his pedigree as a fighting man, his Spartan training regime and world title aspirations, Tommy had Molly-Mae’s blonde wig on to call out 2-0 Paul, who cried like a baby when his brother lost his debut in 2019.
YouTuber Paul is such a bona fide attraction that his last ‘fight’ against a hapless former NBA player – Nate Robinson – featured on the undercard of the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr circus.
The self-anointed ‘Problem Child’ has recently offered Conor McGregor $50million for a fight  – while insulting his wife.
And labelled four-weight hero and boxing’s pound-for-pound king Canelo a ducker.
Unlike Fury and alongside Logan, Jake Paul has gathered an audience that seems to want to see him fail.
Like Floyd Mayweather before them, the mantra seems to be ‘love me or hate me, you are going to pay me’.
But Tommy Fury is one of the few people in history who has entered a reality TV show and come out with an improved reputation and, even with all the money and adulation, he has still not put a foot wrong.

Tommy Fury is yet to be properly challenged in the ringCredit: Rex Features

Fellow Love Island star Jack Fincham has more modest ambitions
Fury only had 12 amateur fights – and then lost a large chunk of his career to Love Island and the snowballing success that followed – so he deserves plenty of time and space to make mistakes and learn his craft.
But he is now 5-0, regularly on TV and talking about winning world titles – and instead of honing his skills in learning fights with journeymen, he is battering short-notice victims to pad out his record.
Fellow Love Island ace Jack Fincham boxed between the ages of 14-18, won 18 of his 26 amateur bouts and is close to making his pro debut.
But when he spoke to SunSport last October, he admitted his loftiest ambition was a respected but modest Southern Area title.
Whether Tommy wants to be taken as a serious contender or a big-money novelty act, he is putting in the hours so deserves respect.
The young man was ringside when Deontay Wilder almost decapitated his brother and would have watched Kubrat Pulev slash a gash into cousin Hughie’s eye
Tommy will know he could earn modest money in high risk fights with Northern Area champ Kieron Conway or English boss Dan Azeez.

Idris Virgo is another Love Island alumnus looking to make it in the ringCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Or he can make mega dough for semi-serious brawls with either of the Paul brothers, maybe tempt Rio Ferdinand out of his boxing retirement or have a grudge match with a lairy Hollyoaks star.
Idris Virgo, the Birmingham boxer who seems hellbent on earning a living by making people hate him, was on Love Island the year before Fury.
Since leaving the villa he has reached 9-0-1 on Channel 5 and also poleaxed poor Scott Williams early in his career.
Virgo has offered Fury a fight and, unlike all of their previous battles combined, this would be a fair fight between two celebs who talk a great game.
The build-up would be a soap opera, the trash-talk would be slapstick, but at least we could take them seriously after.
Tommy’s incredible support means he is going to be a huge success whichever route he takes, but if boxing is really in his blood, we might need to see him spill some soon.

Tyson Fury’s dad John would love to his son Tommy to fight Jake Paul More
