Tommy Fury vows to ditch tag of ‘Tyson’s brother’ and promises to make it on his own as a title-winning boxer

TOMMY FURY has vowed to ditch the ‘Tyson’s brother’ tag and make it on his own as a title-winning champion. The unbeaten light-heavyweight was born into the sport thanks to dad John, an ex-pro fighter and bare-knuckle boxer.

Tyson, 32, has led the way in the Fury family, twice reigning as heavyweight champ and currently holding the WBC belt.
But Tommy, 21, insisted for all the noise and attention that has come in the public due to his surname, he is the one putting in the real work privately.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m not trying to get any freebies. I hear people say: ‘He’s only there because of his brother’.
“That has its pros and cons but nobody can fight for me. Boxing is the hardest job in the world and it’s only me who gets through those ropes.
“It’s only me who wakes up at 5am for a run when it’s raining or snowing.
“As much as Tyson has opened doors, it’s only me that can fight. That’s what people don’t understand – how hard this job is.
“I’m not following in anybody’s footsteps. There’s only one Tyson, only one my dad. I’m not here to try to equal anything that anybody else has done.”
Tommy debuted in 2018 to much fanfare due to his brother and cousin Hughie, a current heavyweight contender.

But he gained wider recognition a year later when he featured in ITV’s hit reality TV show Love Island.
He eventually came runner up with current girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague and the couple have since become stars in their own right.
It has attracted even more eyeballs to the early stages of Tommy’s boxing career, with an equal amount of new fans and critics.
But the level-headed 5-0 fighter admitted the spotlight is nothing he hasn’t seen before, having been an attraction even during his amateur days.
Tommy said: “They don’t understand that I don’t feel that pressure because, as a 14-year-old kid, it was already there.
‘Look, it’s Tyson’s brother, let’s watch him spar!’ It’s nothing new to me for everybody to be judging and criticising me.
“If Trevor from four doors down doesn’t like me, it doesn’t change my life. Trevor can keep spouting whatever he wants about me!”

Tommy’s mainstream appeal from his time on TV, mixed in with his surname, is likely to afford him more chances than the average Joe.
But he still remembers the days of watching older brother Tyson rise through the ranks, while envisioning a similar career trajectory of his own.
Tommy revealed: “All of my memories are in a boxing gym. lived and breathed the sport since I was a child.
“I remember, in Warrington, the first time we properly trained together. He taught me and took me on the pads.
“When he trained I sat on a chair, watching. I knew that in 10 years it would be my turn and I could use all of these things that I saw to my advantage.
“I still think back to those days. Everything he did to prepare for his fights, I now do.”
Tommy extended his record in February, as he knocked out journeyman Scott Williams.
Dad and trainer John revealed his son is likely in line for a quick turnaround in April, where his every move will again be analysed.

George Foreman casts doubt over Anthony Joshua beating Tyson Fury in massive heavyweight clash

LEGENDARY heavyweight boxer George Foreman ‘cannot see’ how Anthony Joshua will beat Tyson Fury. The two British superstars are on a collision course to face one another in the coming months after signing contracts for the fight earlier this week.

And while many see it as a difficult fight to call, 72-year-old Foreman feels Fury is the firm favourite.
Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “That boy Tyson Fury, you’re going to have to bring everything you’ve got to beat him.
“And I’m going to be honest with you, I just cannot see Joshua beating him.
“But I sure would buy some tickets to see what would happen, I’m that curious about it.
“But that Tyson Fury man, woooh, Fury – I mean, how did he get the name?”
Fury, 32, was named after iconic heavyweight Mike Tyson and would go on to emulate him by becoming world heavyweight champion.
AJ and The Gypsy King have agreed a deal for a four-belt showdown this summer, but a location and date still need to be agreed.

Hearn told ESPN earlier this week: “We’d like to get a site deal confirmed in the next month.
“The hard part is always getting everybody to put pen to paper. But this was a major effort from all parties to get this over the line.
“You had rival promoters, rival networks and rival fighters. I actually feel we’ve done the hard part.”
A number of locations are being considered for the fight, but the UK remains unlikely if the coronavirus pandemic restricts organisers from welcoming a full capacity crowd.

Eddie Hearn says Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker could fight on ‘f***ing monstrous’ May 1 card

EDDIE HEARN has hinted that Derek Chisora v Joseph Parker is set to headline a ‘monstrous show’ on May 1 in what he describes as ‘the best card I’ve ever put on’.Chisora and Parker were originally due to face off in 2019 before the New Zealand heavyweight was forced to withdraw when he suffered a rare spider bite.
Chisora recently released a poster for the fight while talks were ongoing
But now, after the pair agreed to the fight on FaceTime earlier this month, it appears an announcement about the dust-up is expected on Friday.
When asked about his show on May 1, Hearn told iFL TV: “May 1st is a card we’ll announce on Friday.
“F***ing absolute monstrous show. Wait till you see the line-up. It’s a belter.”
Then asked whether ‘two certain heavyweights’ are featuring on the card, he added: “Possibly.”
Hearn then continued: “I think it’s the best card I’ve ever put on. I do say that nearly every week but I’m looking at it here.
“Every fight on the card could be a Saturday night fight night headliner.
“And actually, we’re going to look to announce five fights on Friday. At least two of them are too big – probably three of them – are too big to headline Saturday night fight nights.
“So it’s a really good card. Really good card.”

Chisora and Parker are set to clash in May
Chisora is coming off the back of a unanimous decision defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in October, his tenth professional loss.
Meanwhile, Parker is hoping for a quick turnaround after his recent victory over fellow Kiwi Junior Fa at the end of February.
The former WBO world champion’s only two defeats have come against Brits Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.
Hearn also confirmed that undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor’s next fight will be announced on Friday.
The Irish superstar, who last defended her titles in November, is expected to feature as the chief support on the May 1 card against Britain’s Natasha Jonas.
Jonas has not fought since she drew with WBC super-featherweight champion Terri Harper in a thrilling contest back in August.

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury: David Haye’s ‘controversial prediction’ as he warns Gypsy King to ditch Wilder tactics

DAVID HAYE has revealed his ‘controversial’ prediction for the fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. And the former heavyweight world champion – who twice pulled out of fighting Fury – warned the Gypsy King to ditch the tactics he used against Deontay Wilder when he faces AJ.

The two leading heavyweight superstars have signed a two-fight deal to secure a historic undisputed title decider after months of negotiations.
But Haye has sensed some complacency from Fury and wonders whether Joshua will be able to cash in.
He told Sky Sports: “Tyson Fury, who many do believe is No1 because Fury beat Wilder, and he’s the lineal champion, but I think it’s the perfect time for Anthony Joshua.
“Tyson Fury is on such a high. The victory over Wilder made him look a million dollars, his confidence will be sky high and I genuinely think Fury and his team don’t rate AJ as highly as they should do.
“That, in itself, causes potential issues.”
For the first time in heavyweight history, all four belts are set to be on the line.
Joshua, 31, is the WBA, IBF and WBO champion, who last fought in December, knocking out mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, 39, in round nine.
And Fury, 32, dethroned Deontay Wilder, 35, of the WBC crown in February 2020.
CHELTENHAM SPECIAL OFFER: GET CHACUN POUR SOI AT 50/1 IN THE CHAMPION CHASE

Initially, they drew in 2018, but the Gypsy King switched tactics in the rematch and became the aggressor.
It worked a treat against the often-flat footed and one dimensional heavy-hitter Wilder, who was battered all around the ring.
But Haye, 40, feels taking the same approach against Joshua will be a recipe for disaster for Fury, with AJ far more capable of cooking up a fightback.
He explained: “If Tyson Fury attacks Anthony Joshua in the same manner, in which he did in Vegas against Deontay Wilder, I don’t believe it works in his favour.
“I believe he’ll be too open, too wide and someone as fast, athletic, and as skilful as Anthony Joshua will be able to punch right through the middle and take him out, and take him out early.
    “I know it’s a controversial prediction.”

And Wilson – a retired Olympic gymnast – was on hand to feel the full force of the Brit’s power.
    Hall, who stands 6ft 3in and 25STONE, completely dwarfed the 5ft 6in, 9st 4lb, ex-athlete.
Wilson attempted a punch of his own but it has no affect whatsoever on the super-heavyweight.
Hall, 33, said: “The thing is, mate, I train – with my training, I’ll hang on a bar and my training partner will smash me in the gut.
“Obviously, as you can see, I’ve also got a massive wall of thick muscle there.”
Later on, Hall lands a single jab to Wilson, who is wearing a body belt – but it still sent him flying.
Wilson, 25, said:  “My brain hit the back of my head.”
Hall then joked: “I think I might have actually knocked him out…”

But Wilson rather unconvincing replied: “I’m alright, yeah.”
Hall and ‘Thor’ Bjornsson are set to fight in Las Vegas in September, billed the ‘heaviest boxing match in history’.
Bjornsson, 32, recently boxed in a three-round exhibition bout in Dubai against Irish cruiserweight Steven Ward to prepare for the grudge match.
Both giants have dramatically transformed their bodies as they swap weight lifting for tireless punching.

The two heavyweights are the only boxers to feature on any sterling currency — and Jamaica-born Whyte is the first black person to receive the honour.
Whyte was unable to leave his Portugal camp to attend the striking of the first coin.
But his former head teacher and a handful of pupils from his old school, Lilian Baylis in South London, did attend at Tower Mint.
Whyte, 32, lost the August clash against the Russian after a brutal fifth-round KO.
But he demanded a rerun from promoter Eddie Hearn the second that he regained his consciousness.
The bout has since been postponed three times as 41-year-old Povetkin, a former world and Olympic champion, recovered from Covid-19.

The pay-per-view clash was moved from Wembley to Gibraltar when travel restrictions between Portugal and the UK would have forced Whyte to quarantine for ten days in a designated hotel before the must-win clash.
To boost Whyte’s camp, he has added Harold ‘The Shadow’ Knight to his training team.
The American coach helped Lennox Lewis exact rematch revenge on Oliver McCall in 1997, and then Hasim Rahman in 2001 — as well as being in his corner during a string of world- title defences.

Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury could walk away from £500m fight deal if venue doesn’t cough up enough money

TYSON FURY or Anthony Joshua could still walk away from their £500million, two-fight deal if they feel the pandemic-hit windfall is not enough. The contract for a 50-50 split of their first purse, with the winner getting 60-40 of the rematch, was signed this week.

Fury and Joshua’s teams finally signed the contract for their £500m double-header on MondayCredit: EPA
AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn and Fury’s Top Rank team will now listen to site fee offers from the Middle East, USA and Asia.
But – if there are still fan restrictions or travel bans on the interested territories – the money could be slashed before it is even carved up.
And Hearn, who has a close partnership with Saudi Arabia after taking Joshua vs Andy Ruiz II there in 2019, admits the 30-day race to find a cash-splashing venue will be a tense one.
When asked if all the hard work could still go up in smoke, Hearn said: “Yeah, if people don’t like the deal.
“Ultimately everyone is going to go now and look for the biggest site fee as a team and then present it to the fighters.
“There’s no fight financially that will come close to this for both guys.
“Already the offers we have are considerable so I don’t see an issue with that. I just think some people are more optimistic than others.
“Our track record speaks for itself. We are the only ones to deliver a major fight in the Middle East with a major site deal and the people who we did that deal are desperate to stage this fight.”
CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: CLAIM UP TO £800 IN CASINO BONUS CASH

Fury has warned his Top Rank team and ESPN broadcasters that he is contractually entitled to two 2021 fights where his flat fee is around £12million per bout.
Last week he roared: “I’ve got two fights this year and I don’t care who it’s with – Joe Bloggs, Mike Tyson, Fred Flintstone, anybody”.
So the WBC Gypsy King will be able to decide if he takes the easy route against a couple of cherry-picked opponents for guaranteed mega-money.
Or faces Watford’s WBA, IBF and WBO boss – for the undisputed honour – in a much riskier fight that he will have to split with his old rival.
Hearn recognises the danger but hopes Fury”s competitive nature leads him to the biggest fight in British boxing history.
“I don’t know. That’s over to them,” he said when asked if Fury’s deal could scupper the plan.
“I would like to believe Tyson Fury wants to fight Anthony Joshua.
“What I would like to hear from him is ‘the only fight I want is Anthony Joshua’ because that is how we feel.
“The only fight that AJ wants is Tyson Fury.”
