Campbell Hatton beats Jesus Ruiz in pro debut on Whyte vs Povetkin undercard as proud dad Ricky wells up

CAMPBELL HATTON proved himself a chip off the old Rock by winning his Gibraltar boxing debut in front of proud dad Ricky – who was left in tears at his son’s victory. The 20-year-old novice and his ring legend father had everyone aboard the fight-week yacht – for the Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin showdown – laughing with their loving relationship.

But the new Manchester banger got down to the serious business when the first bell of his pro career came, beating Jesus Ruiz on points over four rounds.
The judges scored the fight 40-36.
The raw talent bounced to the ring to a medley of Blue Moon and Oasis anthem F***ing In The Bushes, in a perfect tribute to his football club and city.
Lightweight Hatton jabbed his way into the hurt business but was soon throwing his dad’s trademark hooks to the body.
And the teenager wasn’t afraid to roughhouse his 32-year-old rival, barging him to the canvas unfairly just before the opener ended.
The flame-haired dynamo was clipped a couple of times in the second, thanks to too much youthful exuberance and will have to be more careful as he progresses.
Ruiz was bleeding by the third and Hatton was looking too hard for the highlight reel KO, against a tough Spanish journeyman who had lost all his 10 previous bouts but only been stopped once back in 2017.
And Hatton almost got his first KO when a sickener winded the gatekeeper but he stood up to the best punch of the fight.

Campbell is being managed by his two-weight world champion dad and trained by uncle Matthew, a former European champ who also challenged for world honours.
And the young father of one has been snapped up by Anthony Joshua’s 258 management who see huge potential in and outside the ring.
After his win, Hatton said: “You only get one debut and I am over the moon but I don’t think I boxed my best.
“I did look for the knockout a bit too much and maybe the nerves got to me a little bit.
“I was surprised how durable he was but I am dead happy with it.
“I have a lot of the same strengths as my dad, like the body punching.”

And proud dad Ricky beamed: “I am glad we have these masks on so nobody can see me crying.
“It is such a proud night for the family.
“The opponent was perfect, very durable and Campbell showed in flashes what he can do.
“He did get too involved a couple of times but that will improve with experience.”
Uncle and trainer Matthew added: “You only saw in flashes what Campbell can do.
“He did load up on his shots too much. It was a learning experience.”

Five opponents for Oscar De La Hoya including Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor and Dana White ahead of his July return

OSCAR DE LA HOYA has confirmed he will make his in-ring comeback on July 3 aged 48.The boxing legend was demolished by Manny Pacquiao in his last bout back in 2008.

Here are five opponents that the legend could face in his comebackCredit: AP:Associated Press
Now he has revealed he will be pulling on the gloves after a 13-year absence during Friday night’s press conference for the upcoming Jake Paul vs Ben Askren fight.
However, the six-weight world champion produced a mic drop instead of naming who his opponent will be.
De La Hoya finished his career with a record of 39-6, winning 11 world titles during that journey.
After hanging up his gloves, the American went on to become a successful promoter and has rising star Ryan Garcia under his Golden Boy Promotions banner.
He also previously had Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez before an acrimonious split – and the Mexican could be lured into a huge payday to face his fellow icon.
SunSport looks at five potential men De La Hoya could fight on on his comeback:
De La Hoya has already stated he thinks he could ‘easily’ beat Triple GCredit: Getty
    TRIPLE G
De La Hoya has already called out Gennadiy Golovkin, bizarrely claiming it would be ‘easy’ to beat the Kazakh warrior.
He told BoxingScene: “You know how easy GGG would be for me? Oh, my gosh.
“It would be a high-profile fight, that’s for sure.”
A nine-year age gap exists between the fighters with Golovkin, 38, still very much an active fighter.
But De La Hoya feels he is reaching the twilight of his career, and added: “He’s older as well.
“I always took a good shot and I always took apart fighters like him.
“In my mind it would be that easy. I would definitely consider it, that’s for sure.”

    CANELO
De La Hoya refused to rule out a fight against Saul Alvarez when discussing a ring return last year.
Although he did admit the man he promoted for a decade would be a huge challenge – although he never backs down from one.
De La Hoya said: “I don’t know. I’m crazy but not that crazy.
“Canelo is an amazing fighter, he’s the best, he’s a pound-for-pound champ, and he hits like a mule.
“You’re throwing me in the fire here. That’s a challenge.
“I never back down from anybody, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

    McGREGOR
The icon called out UFC mega-star Conor McGregor last summer.
Notorious has never been one for the conventional, and he has also previously forayed into the boxing ring to famously fight Floyd Mayweather.
And if the money is right, who would be brave enough to bet against him being tempted to go one-on-one with De La Hoya – who insisted he would make short work of Notorious.
He told State of Combat: “Oh come on brother, two rounds [against McGregor]. One thing about me, I went for the kill, always.
“Look, McGregor, I love him in the Octagon, I respect him. I watch him all the time but the boxing ring is a whole different story.”
McGregor responded to De La Hoya’s threat, tweeting: “I accept your challenge.”
Floyd Mayweather would probably top the legend’s wishlistCredit: Getty
    MAYWEATHER
Out of everyone on this list, Floyd Mayweather, who beat De La Hoya in 2007, is perhaps the man the returning legend wants most.
He lost that night via a split decision, and the drawing power of both men would guarantee big bucks for another showdown.
Mayweather has also been teasing some exhibition bouts and is expected to face YouTuber Logan Paul later this year.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Golden Boy said previously: “I’ve always prided myself in fighting the very best, and why go after the second-best?
“Why not go after the guy that beat [Canelo]? Why not go after [Floyd] Mayweather, for instance, in a revenge fight?
“That’s something that’s very intriguing. We’ll see how I feel, and then we’ll take it from there.”
The boxing icon and Dana White have plenty of bad bloodCredit: Getty
    DANA WHITE
We know, we know… It’s a crazy idea right?
But these two have a long history of bickering back and forth, so what better way to settle those differences than in the ring.
UFC president White has previously suggested he could outbox the likes of Tito Ortiz and may feel he has enough skills to compete with De La Hoya following his long absence from the ring.
It is by far the most out there name on the list, but if the emergence of Triller and their exhibition fights has taught us anything, money talks.
And a big payday and the potential to even raise a lot of cash for charity may be enough for these two to get it on.

Watch Jake Paul lose his cool with Ben Askren and refuse to talk to him after being taunted over brother Logan’s success

JAKE PAUL was lost for words at one point as he came head-to-head with Ben Askren last night after being taunted about his brother Logan’s success. The loud-mouthed YouTuber faces retired UFC welterweight Askren on April 17, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The social media star has two knockouts in as many fights, against online rival ‘AnEsonGib’ and ex-NBA player Nate Robinson.
Askren is an ex-ONE Championship and Bellator champion but was renowned for his grappling rather than striking and even admits he was not gifted with speed or power.
However, after social media barbs between the two, he has agreed to swap the cage to pull on the boxing gloves for the Triller showpiece.
A media event was held on Friday, hosted by Snoop Dogg, to promote the much-maligned but intriguing showdown.
But Paul tried his best not to let Askren get a word in, and he even pulled out his phone at one point to continuously replay a clip of his record-breaking defeat to Jorge Masvidal in 2019, the fastest KO in UFC history.
That was after he got Masvidal on Facetime as well!
However, Paul was not the only one firing shots, and at one point he refused to reply to his rival as Askren taunted him over his older brother Logan’s success.
And he continued that as Askren joked about Logan bullying Jake when the pair were growing up as kids.

Logan has also entered the fight game and is on course to meet Floyd Mayweather later this year.
And the tension seemed very real between Askren and Jake, with the retired MMA ace also stating: “2021 seems like a tremendous year to beat up the whole Paul family.
“I’m gonna have fun with this, that’s what I came for. Jake thinks he’s a high level boxer, I think he’s fairly delusional, I guess we’ll find out.”
Askren humiliated Paul as the world watched on by facepalming him at their conference.
And in return the seemingly furious YouTuber reacted by giving the retired UFC star a slap and a shove as his back was turned.

Dillian Whyte trainer wants Deontay Wilder fight after Povetkin rematch but warns bout would be ‘dangerous’

DILLIAN WHYTE’S trainer Dave Coldwell believes the Brit should target a fight with Deontay Wilder after Alexander Povetkin.Whyte’s career reputation is on the line tonight as he looks to exact revenge over the powerful Russian.

The Body Snatcher, 32, endured a shock TKO against Povetkin seven months ago after taking a brutal uppercut.
But he has the opportunity to take win back his WBC interim heavyweight title shot at the Rumble on the Rock in Gibraltar.
Coldwell, who also worked with Tony Bellew, believes it’s a fight Whyte can’t afford to lose.
He told talkSPORT: “In terms of being in line for a heavyweight title then yes [he has to win], but it’s also a chance to put this to bed.
“He was boxing well in the first fight. To be fair to Povetkin, he was competitive and was in the fight – he was having a lot of good shots downstairs throughout even when there was no sign of Dillian being in real trouble.
“It’s not like it was just one shot – it’s going to be a dangerous fight again. It will be as long as Povetkin is in there. Dillian Whyte has to win.
“He wins and he can put that [defeat] to bed and get back to where he was. If he loses the problem is other people are in the pecking order ahead of him.”
Coldwell was also quizzed on a potential ‘dangerous’ match-up between Whyte and big-hitting American Wilder in the future.
Whyte could be in like with a scrap against Dillian Whyte after PovetkinCredit: Reuters

Wilder has been out of action since suffering defeat to Tyson Fury in February 2020.
Coldwell added: “As a fan that’s a fight you’d want to see. The build up and the fight itself would be unbelievable.
“It’s another one of those fights that if you look at that division and you look at the names that everyone has fought and then look at who Dillian Whyte has fought.
“You have to give him props as he’s fought some top names in that division. He’s had some great fights in that division, and I just want him to have a world title shot.
“Ultimately he was no.1 mandatory [for the title] for so long and never got his shot at the WBC – he wanted that belt.

“He stayed loyal to that belt – he never got his crack – and then one fight away from it he gets knocked out. I’d like him to get his shot.
“Wilder is a dangerous fight. If that’s not for a world title, then that’s a real dangerous fight. It could be a mark-in-time fight or something like that.
“As a fan, and as a neutral, of course I’d like to see that fight, it would be great.”

Nagannou is hoping to take the UFC heavyweight belt off Stipe Miocic at UFC 260 on Saturday night.
To be one of the most ferocious fighters on the planet, you have to be able to take a punch.
And the Cameroonian – whose painful punches were compared to being hit by a sledgehammer – proved he can do just that in the footage.
Soon after Ngannou knocked out Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 249 last year, the pair linked up to shoot the video.
Ngannou was decked out in a body suit as Garcia let rip.
But not only did the 260lb fighter withstand the barrage of blows, he seemed to enjoy it.
After an initial flurry of punches failed to move Ngannou, Garcia eased off.

Whyte vs Povetkin 2 predictions: Boxing world including Anthony Joshua and Carl Froch on who will win rematch

DILLIAN WHYTE faces Alexander Povetkin in a huge rematch TONIGHT as he looks to get his heavyweight world title hopes back on track. The Body Snatcher, 32, was stunned by the former world champ Povetkin, 41, in Eddie Hearn’s backyard in August 2020.

This time they clash over in Gibraltar with the Brit desperate to avenge that loss and regain his place as WBC interim champion.
However, despite Whyte being the huge favourite to win, William Hill has discovered history is not on his side.
They conducted a study analysing rematches involving every current heavyweight in the top 15 WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF rankings and it has revealed that only SIX PER CENT of first-time losers have gone on to seal revenge.
Fortunately for Whyte, despite the record books not being on his side, a number of star names are backing him as SunSport looks at the predictions of some of the sport’s big hitters:
    ANTHONY JOSHUA
“It’s easy to kind of curl up in a ball and hide away because there’s so much negative energy towards failure these days, but what he [Whyte] showed in his true strength.
“That’s why I think it’s going to be a really good fight. The second time around, even though I respect Povetkin so much, he’s an Olympic gold medalist, world champion; he’s only lost to [Wladimir] Klitschko and me.
“Dillian, the strength that he’s had to pick himself up, takes some doing. That kind of energy to take into the rematch will be the reason for his victory.”
    WINNER: Whyte

    JOHNNY NELSON
“Dillian Whyte will stop Povetkin between the fifth and seventh rounds.
“I think Povetkin knows he’s got to ride out the storm initially. He will take a few shots and he’ll tuck up tight.
“Dillian will try and jump on him. He’ll use pace, he’ll use speed, he’ll use his freshness, those long arms and that power.
“But he cannot cross swords early, because it’s a case of who lands, not who’s the best.
“Dillian must box him long and hurt him on the end of a long shot, because the second he crossed swords, he got turned over. That’s what he’s got to respect about Povetkin.”
    WINNER: Whyte by KO
Carl Froch thinks the Body Snatcher will get the job done within nine roundsCredit: Getty
    CARL FROCH
“I reckon he’ll knock out Povetkin. Get him out of there within nine rounds.
“Whyte needs to stay switched on and concentrate for the whole fight. He could still get caught with a few shots, because Povetkin is tricky.
“But I’m confident that Whyte will do the business.”
    WINNER: Whyte by KO
    TONY BELLEW
“Dillian Whyte by KO inside eight rounds. He was on the way to a stoppage last time and just ran into a once in a career punch. That’s all it was, in my opinion.
“There’s no such thing as a lucky punch in boxing, because lucky punches don’t happen. You throw a punch, it lands, if it was supposed to land.
“But there is such a thing as a once-in-a-lifetime punch. I don’t think he’ll ever be down and hurt the way he was and come back the way he did.
“In the rematch, when he goes down, Dillian will be a bit more patient this time, a lot less reckless, and he’ll go in and flatten him.”
    WINNER: Whyte by KO
Tony Bellew believes it will only take eight rounds for Dillian Whyte to winCredit: Getty
    JOSEPH PARKER
“From the first fight, we all saw that he was controlling the fight before he got caught with that good punch that was set up.
“In this fight, I feel like he’s going to get the victory. I think he’s going to be a little bit more cautious, with those shots that Povetkin throws, but I feel like he’s going to come out on top. That’s my pick, revenge.”
    WINNER: Whyte
    DEREK CHISORA
“Dillian will be in a catch 22, because first of all he talks like he’s going to bring maximum violence.
“He will want to go violent on this guy and in the back of his mind he’ll remember the knockout, and then he’s going to try and play safe.
“I see Dillian winning it, but how he wins it, I don’t know yet.”
    WINNER: Whyte
