So much so that the Scot, a standout amateur trained by Dominic Ingle, was being tipped as the next Joe Calazaghe.
But Clarke ripped up the script, and snatched the vacant British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles away from Hutchinson’s grasp with a brutal stoppage.
After the win, he told BT Sport: “I knew I could take his best shots, I knew it was too early for him stepping up against me when he’s been knocking over them wallies.
“I’ll eat all of his shots and I’m still going to come. And that’s what you’ve seen there, obviously I’m a dog, you can’t stop me.”
Hutchinson, 22, started the fight well as he landed his jab nicely and switched stances.
In the second he looked to have Clarke hurt with some eye-catching right hands, as he found his rhythm.
But Brummie Clarke, 29, responded well and began to march forward and find success on the inside as he closed the distance.
Then, suddenly in the fifth it was all over as Hutchinson was massively wobbled on the ropes after a right hand.
“Boom, where is he? Sleeping!””I had to give him one to make sure.”Lennox Clarke was in a defiant mood after becoming British and Commonwealth champion, stating he knew Willy Hutchinson wasn’t ready 😤 pic.twitter.com/cg20G7YMxb— Boxing on BT Sport 🥊 (@BTSportBoxing) March 27, 2021

Clarke made sure the job was done with another left hand followed by a right, which left Hutchinson out for the count.
Watching the KO back, Clarke said: “Boom, right hand, left hook, where is he? Sleeping.
“I had to give him one to make sure though, I didn’t want him coming back at me with them tough jabs, them sharp jabs he was coming with.”

Classy Dillian Whyte shows amazing sportsmanship by offering Alexander Povetkin a stool after brutal fourth-round KO

DILLIAN waved the Whyte flag after KOing Alexander Povetkin – by grabbing a stool for his defeated opponent in a classy gesture. The pair went head to head in their rematch on Saturday night in Gibraltar.

And Whyte, 32, exacted revenge on the veteran Russian following August’s loss with a fourth-round stoppage.
A brutal combination of heavy hitting had Povetkin, 41, down on the canvas and the referee waved it off before even reaching the ten count.
But with the victory wrapped up, Whyte proved his sportsmanship side.
Povetkin – whose only two previous pro losses were to Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua – was getting treatment from his team standing in his corner.
But the Body Snatcher picked up a stool and brought it over for Povetkin to take a seat.
And then he poured water on the battered boxer to help cool him down.
The two fighters clearly had plenty of respect for one another afterwards as they embraced in the ring.
Boxing fans on Twitter hailed Whyte for the nice touch.

One said: “I love how Whyte got a stool for Povetkin, both fighters have great respect for each other, just good vibes.. Really nice to see.”
Another wrote: “Love the respect from Whyte after the fight there. Getting Povetkin a stool and checking he was ok rather the celebrate. Why can’t all boxers do that. You love to see it.”
And a third added: “Down goes Povetkin and it’s OVER! Whyte brings a stool and pays his respect to Povetkin to make sure he’s alright. That’s boxing!!”
The result got Whyte back to winning ways following his shock defeat at Matchroom HQ in Essex last summer – after dropping Povetkin earlier in the fight.
And it will not take long before the focus turns to his next opponent with the WBC interim heavyweight belt back in his grasp.
Heading Stateside to challenge former WBC king Deontay Wilder was one suggestion from Eddie Hearn.
But for now Whyte is basking in the win, his first since December 2019.
Brixton’s finest said: “I am just sad I didn’t get it finished in the first round but he is a tough guy.

“I was on him in the first round but I knew I had to relax and not go hell for leather. I knew he was a former world and Olympic champion.
“That is probably the best right-hand knockout of my career.
“[Speaking about the finishing left hook] No one can take that punch from me and stand up, they will all go down.
“I still believe I can be a world champion and beat anyone.”

Dillian Whyte could fight in the US this summer – with ‘colossal’ Deontay Wilder bout on the cards, says Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN revealed he and Dillian Whyte are interested in a “colossal” fight with Deontay Wilder this summer.Whyte, 32, impressed in his rematch with Alexander Povetkin, scoring a fourth-round KO to secure his revenge and put him back on the world title track.

However, with Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury set to fight twice in the coming months, Whyte will have to wait a little bit longer for his crack at a world title.
Hearn revealed there is interest in a massive fight with former WBC champ Wilder, 35, who hasn’t fought since his one-sided defeat to Fury in Las Vegas last February.
Speaking after Whyte’s win in Gibraltar, Hearn said: “I’d like to see him box quickly again in the summer, maybe go over to the States and have a fight over there.
“We called for the Deontay Wilder fight for a long, long time. [Wilder] actually DM’d Dillian Whyte and said I will never, ever give you that fight.
“And now he got knocked out and he’s calling for the fight with Dillian Whyte.
“For me that’s a stadium fight, that’s a colossal fight. I’d like to get him back out quickly, maybe to the States for a big fight.”
The Essex promoter added: “The ultimate aim for Dillian Whyte has always been to challenge for the world heavyweight title.
“Everyone knows in boxing, he’s a handful for anyone in the division.

“Tonight was about getting his career back on track, getting the title ambition back on track, coming back from that KO.
“Now we regroup, we go again and the aim remains the same for Dillian Whyte to get a shot at a world heavyweight title.
“He’ll stay active. He loves to train, he loves to fight, he doesn’t want to rest, he wants to get out and fight.
“If that involves getting out quickly in the summer we’ve got to plan accordingly.”

But Clarke wants the fight on the inside, with the two coming together at times as we go into round five.

    HUTCHINSON VS CLARKE

    LYNN VS PEREZ
And it’s all over, ten rounds of action there.

Fabio Wardley scores huge KO win over Eric Molina as Dillian Whyte protege’s meteoric rise continues

SUFFOLK PUNCHER Fabio Wardley snatched the biggest scalp of his career with a violent KO of Eric Molina. The 38-year-old American lasted nine rounds with Deontay Wilder in 2015 and three against Anthony Joshua 18 months later.
Fabio Wardley scored a huge victory against Eric MolinaCredit: Mark Robinson Matchroom Boxing
But the rapidly learning Dillian Whyte protege needed just fifth rounds and a bit of scare to demolish the two-time world title challenger, in just his ELEVENTH pro fight.
After the win, Wardley said: “I got caught because I get a bit bored of the tactics game and the long game but I showed if you want to go to war then I am ready
“I was still bouncing and moving, I felt it, I was tested and I passed it.
“If you want to go toe-to-toe with me, that is what happens to you. I am not the finished article, I need fights like that.
“I hit him and he didn’t go missing, I had lessons to learn, I have learned them and they are crucial to my career.
“I don’t call people out, I want titles and accolades. I want to build and get maybe a British, Commonwealth or European title.”
Molina did not fly across the world to lie down for the rapidly rising English champion and went hunting in the opener with some spiteful shots.
Wardley showed defensive skills and a solid enough set of ribs and whiskers.
And the visiting underdog also had success in the second when Wardley’s risky hands-down style let him land some loud shots.
In the third Wardley came close to landing a bizarre stoppage when Molina switched off toward the end of the round, turning his back and walking away in a confusing moment that ended the session.
The Ipswich lad marched Molina back into his own red corner at the start of the fourth and clipped him with a left-hook-right-hand combination.
But the game part-time teacher taught the Brit another lesson when he appeared to wind him with another meaty dig.

But then, in an incredible fifth and final session, Warley was clipped with the biggest punch of his career and looked in serious trouble.
The former recruitment worker’s legs seemed to buckle and his eyes almost glazed.
But he instinctively unleashed a barrage of blows that collapsed Molina into the canvas and didn’t even need the full 10-count. More

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury could be held at Wembley but only at 100 per cent capacity, reveals Eddie Hearn

EDDIE HEARN is warming to the idea of Wembley hosting Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury — if Saudi Arabia go cold on the summer showdown.AJ’s Matchroom promoter insists the first leg of the signed two-fight rivalry must happen in June or July this year.

AJ has fought at Wembley threee times, including his 2017 victory over Wladimir KlitschkoCredit: Getty
But the 100°F heatwave that hits the Middle East at that time is turning the kingdom off the idea of coughing up the huge site fee for the world heavyweight clash.
Hearn will spend the week flying around the world canvassing offers from the Gulf, Asia and America and has just three weeks to confirm the venue and date.
And he admitted there could be a chance for the biggest fight in British boxing history to happen at the home of English football.
Hearn said: “I am not joking when I talk about Wembley.
“If we got a huge site fee from abroad for a December rematch and they could give us full capacity at Wembley this summer, then we could present it to the fighters.
“But we can only consider Wembley with 100 per cent capacity.”
It seems far-fetched that such a huge event could take place so soon after all Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, which is hoped will happen by June 21.
But 41-year-old Hearn has talked to the Government about it and crunched the numbers.
