Boxing legend Holyfield says sparring session with Ruiz Jr – 27 years his junior – made him realise he was too old

EVANDER HOLYFIELD revealed a sparring session with an up and coming Andy Ruiz Jr made him realise he was too old to fight. The heavyweight legend, now 58, believes the spar took place in 2009, though Ruiz recalls it happening in 2011, Holyfield’s final year in boxing.
Evander Holyfield is considering making a sensational comeback
Holyfield revealed a sparring session with an up and coming Ruiz Jr made him realise he was too old to fight
Holyfield’s last fight was against Brian Nielsen when he was 48, but a few rounds with future heavyweight champion Ruiz, who was a couple years into his career, was all he needed to confirm retirement was overdue.
He told told Pro Boxing Fans: “When I sparred that guy Ruiz and when he was 19-years-old he was able to tag me when I was 46 and I knew then.
“I don’t pass my age range where it no longer makes sense to get like that by somebody you think you should be able to beat, because experience and all this, but he had speed and I was losing speed.”
Holyfield is considering making a sensational comeback, but stresses it will only be in exhibition bouts for charity.
The two-division champ is seeking opponents a similar age and ability as him, with old rival Mike Tyson, 54, also returning to the ring last year to fight Roy Jones Jr.
Holyfield said: “The thing is I wouldn’t be in the ring if I couldn’t defend myself and I wouldn’t get in the ring with nobody I believe would beat me up either.
“So pretty much, the people I aspire to get in the ring with are people my age and who are probably older than me, fighting wise anyway.

“It’s got a strategy about which you do when you’re going to do things so if the person does get whose advantage it is.
“It’s probably going to be to my advantage and this is how I’m looking at it.
“I would never really get in the ring with anyone I don’t believe I can win.”

Shockingly, the former Disney actor turned professional boxer is the favourite going into his showdown with the former Olympic wrestler – despite only having two fights to his name.
The entire MMA community is rooting for Askren to put a beating on the outspoken Paul brother.
And if he were in Askren’s shoes, Poirier would be embarrassed if he didn’t get the better of the social media star early in the contest.
He tweeted: “Also while Im at it if i can’t get Jake Paul outta there in 3 rounds im a bumb [sic].”
The Diamond was quickly quizzed about Paul’s relationship with his American Top Team team-mate Jorge Masvidal.
A fan tweeted: “Why is Jorge friends with him after Jake called you a bum fighter?”

He said: “Ask Jorge what he thinks will happen if i put them paws on Jake.”
Former ONE Championship and Bellator 170lb king Askren has vowed to drag Paul into deep waters and finish him.
But the YouTuber – who is 2-0 as a pro following wins over AnEson Gib and ex-NBA star Nate Robinson – is adamant the 36-year-old won’t lay a glove on him.

He told ESPN: “Go Google Ben Askren’s striking.
“Hahaha. It’s not going to go that long, it’s not going to go that long.
“I don’t even think he’ll hit me. I haven’t been hit one time in the face in my past two fights.
“So I haven’t even been punched as pro boxer one time. Nate Robinson landed one body shot in a clinch.
“I don’t think Ben Askren will even hit me. That’s my prediction.”

The two champions have agreed a two-fight deal – and Fury’s dad wants Part I to happen in June.
John Fury is eager for his son to face AJ a month earlier than what promoter Eddie Hearn has touted – in a ‘warm-up’ fight.
The WBC champion’s old man said in an Instagram video: “This is a video to Eddie Hearn and all his supporters of AJ.
“We’re not bothered about Anthony Joshua one iota. And here’s what you can do: if he wants to fight in June, get it ready for June, Eddie.

John is adamant The Gypsy King, 32, will fight twice this year.
The 56-year-old continued: “We’ll have the first fight with him.
“Because Tyson is fighting twice this year, but we’d like AJ to be the first on the butcher’s block.
“So get your arse in gear, mate. Wave your magic wand and let’s get this fight started.
“Because nobody is bothered about you or AJ in any way, shape or form.

TYSON FURY’s dad has demanded Eddie Hearn book his son’s long-awaited Battle of Britain with Anthony Joshua for June.Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn recently revealed the first of two multi-million-pound undisputed heavyweight title fights is likely to take place in July.

But the outspoken John Fury is eager for son Tyson to face the unified heavyweight king a month earlier in a ‘warm-up’ fight.
The WBC champion’s old man said in an Instagram video: “This is a video to Eddie Hearn and all his supporters of AJ.
“We’re not bothered about Anthony Joshua one iota. And here’s what you can do: if he wants to fight in June, get it ready for June, Eddie.

John’s public demand to Hearn comes a little less than a week after he cast doubt over his son fighting Joshua this year.
During an appearance on BT Sport, he said: “We need to get him out, whether these cowboys get the job sorted which I don’t think they’re going to do.
“What have they signed? They’ve signed nothing in my eyes. They’ve got no date, no venue, no nothing.
“What does it mean if you can’t get a date and a venue? What does it mean if no one is willing to put the money up?
“It’s all about someone coming forward and saying, ‘Right, I’ll pay for the fight, I’ll stage the fight.’ Where are these people?

“That’s the position it’s in and I don’t think they can get it together.
“It’s too big for what’s happening and the climate the world is in at the moment.
“I just don’t think the timing is right for a fight of that magnitude with the state of the world.”
Despite both men recently putting pen to paper on a whopping £360million two-fight deal, a date and venue for Joshua vs Fury aren’t any closer to being finalised.
A rematch, however, is expected to take place in November or December and could very well be held in the UK.

Fury, 32, has dropped a considerable amount of weight in preparation for the undisputed heavyweight title fight, which is expected to take place in the summer.
And he showed off his trimmer physique in a post-training selfie with Irish welterweight Paddy Donovan.
Donovan shared a snap of himself and a bare-chested Fury to Instagram on Friday afternoon.
His accompanying caption read: “Training today with the greatest man in the world @gypsyking101
“What a humble man. Everything that he has achieved he truly deserves it all because you couldn’t find a nicer person.
“I wish him all the best going forward and long may he continue to conquer the boxing world because when he’s gone everyone will realise just how good he really was.”

Donovan shared the snap shortly after pictures of Fury training with former WBO champ Joseph Parker emerged.
New Zealander Parker posted a selfie of himself, Andy Lee and Fury to his Instagram page.
The Kiwi wrote: “#ChampCamp with these two legends 👊🏽💥💥 @bodypuncher @gypsyking101.”
A date and venue for Fury’s long-awaited Battle of Britain with unified heavyweight king Joshua have yet to be finalised.
But according to Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, the biggest fight in the history of British boxing is on course to take place in July.
When asked to provide an update on a date for the fight, Hearn told AK and Barak: “In July.
“The date depends on many different things. For one venue, it’s the backend of July, and for another venue, it’s the first week of July.
“There’s been a bit of talk about Wembley, which is difficult, but we got 100,000 capacity, which the government is working towards.
“Wembley is trying to initiate full capacity. So if we did have full capacity at the end of July, Wembley comes into the conversation.

“In AJ’s head, this comes down to as much money as possible, but for AJ, I’m not saying he’s looking for the right deal, but he just wants to fight.
“He wants this fight next more than anything. So if it’s 100,000 at Wembley, Anthony Joshua is 1 million percent signed and in for this fight.
“Obviously, we have to do our job and go around the world and present all the offers to the fighters, but Anthony Joshua has told me categorically that if it’s Wembley and full up, ‘I’m in.’
“But firstly, I have to deal with all these approaches for the fighters.”
