UFC legend Frank Mir beaten by ex-boxing champion Steve Cunningham on Jake Paul vs Ben Askren undercard

UFC legend Frank Mir was beaten by Steve Cunningham on Jake Paul’s undercard. The former cruiserweight boxing champion welcomed the ex-UFC star to the ring as part of a crossover attraction on Triller’s ‘Fight Club’.

Mir, 41, was due to face American great Antonio Tarver, 52, but the veteran was not cleared to make his comeback.
Instead, Cunningham, 44, who last fought in 2017, filled in as a replacement.
And the one-time IBF titleist did not have many problems outboxing Mir – making his ring debut – over six rounds.
Cunningham is most recognisable among British fans for his 2013 fight with Tyson Fury, 32, having dropped but lost to the Gypsy King.
And despite his four-year hiatus from the ring, Cunningham revealed he was preparing for the fight in the same way he did before fighting Fury.
He said: “He’s competed at a high level in the UFC, and that itself makes him prepared for our fight
“He’s a warrior and a champion. For anybody who thinks this is easy or that I’m going to breeze through him, I don’t think like that.
“In the words of my great late trainer Brother Naazim [Richardson,] ‘you take everybody seriously.’

“That’s Tyson Fury right there. I’m about to fight Tyson Fury again. That’s the mindset that I’m going through.”
Despite filling in for Tarver at the last minute, Cunningham revealed he found the comeback easier than expected.
He said: “For me, the process is simple. I’m a two-time world champion. I’m always in the gym. I’m always in shape.
“That’s the goal — to die at 100 years old in shape. You buckle down, go to the gym, train hard and push.
“Even short notice, it’s just a few notches. Adjustments here and there, we’re ready.
“A lot of people have been saying, ‘I’m retired.’ I haven’t retired. I still want to fight a few times before I retire and pass the torch to my children.”

Watch brutal slapping contest hosted by WWE legend Ric Flair end in brutal KO on undercard of Jake Paul vs Ben Askren

WWE legend Ric Flair hosted a bizarre slapping contest on the undercard of Jake Paul’s fight with Ben Askren. Triller’s ‘Fight Club’ offered not only professional boxing bouts but musical performances, including from Snoop Dogg.
WWE legend Ric Flair hosted a bizarre slapping contest on Triller Fight Club

But quite possibly the most surprising segment on the pay-per-view was a slapping contest.
Flair officiated the competition, which ended in a brutal knockout with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson also in attendance.
Triller busted onto the scene in November as they brought heavyweight icon Mike Tyson, 54, out of retirement.
In their second box office event, Paul headlined against retired UFC welterweight Askren.
Flair was among the celebrity guests, and said the promotion took inspiration from WWE.
He said: “They got it all from Vince McMahon! They got it all from WWE.
“The NBA, baseball, football, the entrances get grander, the All-Star games get bigger, the Super Bowl gets bigger, but it all started with WrestleMania.”
Flair, 72, an icon in the WWE ring, admitted he was impressed by Triller’s PPV production.

He said: “It’s my first event, I’m not sure what to think of it.
“It’s amazing. The star-power, the people that are hear, attending the event, that speaks volumes already.
“And, you know, you’ve got a national champion. The kid is tough – from WIsconsin.
“And I don’t know how tough the Paul kid is. He better be tough, if he’s wrestling a guy or fighting a guy who’s a two-time national champion.”

Joe Fournier calls out Jake Paul for Triller showdown after two-round battering of Reggaeton artist Reykon

The bout went as many expected, with the now 9-0 Fournier stopping the 0-1 artist in the second round following two brual knockdowns.
And in his post-fight interview, Fournier, 38, reiterated his desire to throw down with the A-side of Triller Fight Club’s second event.
He said: “Everyone knows I’d love Jake Paul next.
“I love what Triller are doing here. I want to be part of every Fight Club.
“They’re really disrupting the industry. Thank you, Triller. I appreciate you for having me on.”
Reykon put up no resistance against multi-millionaire Fournier and failed to land a single punch on the Londoner.
But Fournier was quick to give his opponent praise after the fight, saying: “I want to say thank you to Reykon and his team and to Colombia.

“The guy is a warrior man. He clearly hasn’t had much boxing experience and he stepped in the ring with me.
“And if you look at my record, I knock everyone out. So the fact he even got up after that first knockout, he’s a real legend and he should be proud of himself.
“And the Colombian people should be proud of him, man. He has a lot of balls.
“Respect to Reykon and respect to Colombia.”

Viewers at home, however, weren’t as kind to Reykon as Fournier.
One tweeted: “@REYKON didn’t even put up a fight. That was just terrible!”
Another said: “Y’all watching Triller Fight club? Reykon didn’t train at all for that fight.”
And another said: “Yo who let Reykon fight lmao.”

Askren’s clash with the younger Paul brother will mark his professional boxing debut.
And Funky – who retired from MMA in November 2019 – admits the bout is far from a real spectacle.
He tweeted: “People love fist fights. People love circuses. Hope you enjoy tonight.”
Paul is brimming with confidence ahead of his clash with the former One Championship and Bellator 170lb champion, so much so he reckons he won’t lay a glove on him.
He told ESPN: “Go Google Ben Askren’s striking. Hahaha.
“It’s not going to go that long, it’s not going to go that long.

“I don’t even think he’ll hit me. I haven’t been hit one time in the face in my past two fights.
“So I haven’t even been punched as pro boxer one time. Nate Robinson landed one body shot in a clinch.
“I don’t think Ben Askren will even hit me. That’s my prediction.”
Paul, 24, reckons Askren won’t make it to the third round, saying: “I don’t believe he makes it out of two rounds.
“Look at the guy, he has a beer belly so he clearly didn’t take training camp seriously.

“We all did the talking and the entertainment s*** but now it’s time to let the fists fly.”
Askren, 36, believes he’ll drag the former Disney actor into deep waters, telling ESPN: “TKO [in] round seven.”
He added: “Because I don’t have a huge amount of power. It’ll take me some time to wear him down and make him hate his life.
“And then eventually he’s gonna say, ‘Hey look, I’m a rich celebrity.
“I don’t need to get f–king punched anymore. I’m just gonna roll over.'”

Liam Williams vs Demetrius Andrade LIVE REACTION: Andrade retains title as steely Williams takes him 12 rounds

LIAM WILLIAMS has been defeated after a gutsy 12-round slog against Demitrius Andrade. The Welshman was knocked down in the second but got back to his feet and fought back to take his American opponent the distance in Florida.
Stay up to date with all the action in our live blog, below…
    A MOMENT HE’LL REGRET?
Liam Williams had Demetrius Andrade badly hurt in the ninth round.
He’ll no doubt be kicking himself for not going for broke after wobbling the champion.

    DEMETRIUS ANDRADE DISCUSSES UNIFICATION FIGHTS
He said: “At the end of the day, I’m a champion. I’m undefeated.
“I shouldn’t have to inspire anybody to get in the ring for a belt, an undefeated record and a whole lot of money on the table.
“Whenever we can sit down and make something happen, I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to risk it all.
“I want to show that if I’m the best, I gotta get in there with those guys and they got to do the same as well.
“This was a nice stepping stone for me to get on to that level.”
When asked for a message to Jermell Charlo, he said: “Let’s get it on.”
    WILLIAMS SPEAKS
The Machine said: “Demetrius is a very good fighter. He’s better than I thought, to be honest with you.
“He’s slicker than he is on TV. I couldn’t really get going in terms of landing shots and getting my combinations off.
“Because I’d hit him once – I hurt him a couple of times, I feel – but he was gone before I knew it and [I] couldn’t capitalise on it.”
    THE CHAMPION TALKS
Demetrius Andrade has hailed Liam Williams.
He said: “Liam Williams – hell of a fighter. Tough, strong and he comes to fight.
“And that’s the type of fight people wanted to see me in.
“And that’s what we did. I showed out, I performed how I needed to perform to get the W. And my hat goes off to Liam Williams all day.”
    AND STILL!
Liam Williams’ bid to dethrone the WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade ends in a unanimous decision defeat.
The judges scored the fight 116-111, 118-109, 118-109 in favour of the champ.
A valiant effort from the Brit, who can hold his head high.

    ROUND TWELVE
To say Williams has pushed Andrade to the brink would a massive understatement.
But he’s allowing himself to be tied up. Andrade lands a lopping left hand that stings Williams.
They fall to the floor after yet another clinch, which the ref hasn’t warned the champ for.
Andrade wants no part in a late brawl staying long and elusive.
The final bell goes and it goes to the judges’ scorecards.
I have Andrade winning, but not by much though.
I have it 116-111 in favour of the champion.
    Credit: Ed Mulholland/Matchroom.
    ROUND ELEVEN
Andrade is on the defensive straight away and is back to pot-shotting.
Williams is getting frustrated at Andrade’s constant clinching. And who can blame him?
Andrade lands a good flurry after touching Williams with a beautiful straight left.
Williams briefly goes to work on the body of Andrade but once again finds himself tied up.
Andrade lands a big uppercut to close out the round, a shot which may see the judges award him the stanza.
    On to the final round.
    ROUND TEN
Williams tries to close the distance early but is once again wrapped up by Andrade.
The Welshman lands a good straight right hand that puts Andrade in retreat mode.
A tired Andrade seems to have no pep to his punches. But as I say that, he lands a big left hand.
They clinch yet again. The ref needs to have a word with Andrade here.
Williams lands a good hook on the inside before the end of the round.
Andrade is huffing and puffing on his stool. Williams has to go for broke in these last two rounds.
    ROUND NINE
Williams lands a good one-two combination after blocking a right uppercut.
Andrade is doing a masterful job of staying elusive and tying up Williams when he looks to close the distance.
A long right hand lands for Williams. Andrade looks hurt.
His legs don’t look steady whatsoever. Williams needs to go for broke here.
The pair trade blows on the inside before the end of the round. This is getting tasty.

    ROUND EIGHT
Andrade wants no part of the inside battle he had to deal with earlier in the fight, staying light on his feet and circling away from Williams.
Booboo looks more than happy to pot shot from distance.
Williams needs to cut off the ring rather than walk forward in a straight line.
Andrade lands a big uppercut after making Williams miss a flurry of jabs. Beautiful stuff from the champ.

    ROUND SEVEN
Andrade is opting against going for the jugular straight off the bat, circling away from the former two-division British champ.
Williams’ gas tank hasn’t depleted and he’s continuing to dictate pace of the fight.
Andrade lands another big uppercut a few moments before the end of the round.
Williams was definitely the aggressor that round, but that late shot will likely have won the round for Andrade.

    ROUND SIX
Williams tries to rough up the champion, who accuses the Welshman of trying to poke him in the eye.
Andrade is clearly frustrated by the work rate and relentlessness of Williams.
Andrade lands a big straight left, which he follows up with another huge uppercut.
Another massive uppercut lands, but that hasn’t stopped Williams from continuing to march forward.
Another round in the bank for Andrade.

    ROUND FIVE
Williams’ belief hasn’t wavered one bit, with the Welshman continuing to come forward with bad intentions.
A good right hook lands for Williams, but he ends up eating a uppercut a few moments later.
Andrade follows up with a lovely body-head combination that briefly sets Williams back.
Williams is cut, although the laceration doesn’t seem to be too bad.
Andrade tries to hold but the pair end up crashing between the ropes.

    ROUND FOUR
Andrade opens the round with a good straight left to the body and a follow-up combination.
Dominic Ingle has instructed Williams to continue to get in the face of the champion and is having good success boxing on the inside.
Andrade is starting to be wayward with his shots and allowing himself to be dragged into a brawl.
First round in the bank for the challenger.
    ROUND THREE
Williams seems to have recovered and is showing better movement than in the second.
Andrade’s footwork and head movement is a joy to watch, unless you’re in the corner of Williams.
Andrade finally lands that big lead uppercut he’s been looking for.
Williams will have to figure out a better strategy to close the distance otherwise Andrade will continue to have his way.
As I say that, Williams lands two good shots before the end of the round.
    ROUND TWO
Andrade is looking to land his big lead uppercut early but is wide of the mark again.
Willaims is having a real hard time closing the distance and has resorted to chasing the champion instead of cutting off the ring.
A big straight left lands for Andrade, who follows up with a sickening flurry to the body.
Andrade is keeping his head low but Williams is struggling to find a home for his shots.
Down goes Williams. It was a big straight left that put the Welshman down.
Williams, somehow, survives the late onslaught to make it to the third.

    ROUND ONE
Williams takes the centre of the ring immediately but eats a big left hand.
Andrade lands a vicious flurry which he ends with a big looping left hand.
Williams is shaken and hurt. He needs to hold on or start boxing at distance.
Andrade has started at a ferocious pace and shown pin-point accuracy, particularly with his straight left.
Williams appears to have found his feet again and ends the round well.
    HERE WE GO!
Demetrius Andrade and Liam Williams are staring each other down. This is what we’ve been waiting for, folks.
    Let’s hope it delivers.

    WILLIAMS IS IN THE RING
Liam Williams made a quick entry to the ring.
We now await the champion Demetrius Andrade, who is coming out to a song from the late DMX.
FINAL LOOK AT THE TALE OF THE TAPE
While we wait for both men to make their way to the ring, here’s a look at how they stack up.

    NOT LONG NOW
Liam William’s crack at WBO gold will shortly be upon us.
Demetrius Andrade has just finished up his final warm-up, Williams has just finished his warm up.
    Bring on the action.

    THE STOPPAGE
Here’s a closer look at Carlos Gongora’s eighth-round stoppage of Christopher Pearson.
Pearson’s swollen eye was in agony before the end and that right hook left him in excruciating pain.

    ROUND EIGHT – GONGORA WINS!
Ugly and clumsy start to the round but then Gongora lands a massive left hand and Pearson goes down.
The referee starts a count and Pearson jumps up but then dips back down again and lets himself be counted out.
The loser points to his swollen eye but commentator Paul Smith is not happy with the surrender.
Christopher Pearson is a terrible fighter; time to retire buddy. Well done Carlos Gongora.— Henry (@henry43557112) April 17, 2021

    ROUND SEVEN
Pearson looks interested with a jab and a left straight to Gongora’s body.
But everything is a little highlight with the challenger and he fails to mount any form of pressure.
Right on the bell Gongora backs his prey up with a double-jab and a booming left hand down the pipe.
When you bring a Guy in who has been inactive for 2 Years dont expect anything other than a Gongora Win @DAZNBoxing— Packie Collins (@packycollins) April 17, 2021

    ROUND SIX
Pearson shoves the referee’s hand away when he tries to control the action and he gets a warning from Frank Gentile.
Gongora is trying a few rough-house tactics but in the final minute he scores with crisp flush shots.
Pearson is battered back into his shell and has a welt growing over his right eye.
Gongora has deceptive power. His short punches have a lot of power behind them.— adam abramowitz (@snboxing) April 17, 2021

“It’s not going to go that long, it’s not going to go that long.

    FIRST RESULT OF THE NIGHT

    CONFIRMED START TIME
Ben Askren and Jake Paul will make their respective walks to the ring at 5:00am BST time.

    ‘YOUTUBE B**B’
Even legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach – who Ben Askren trained with in the build-up to this morning’s fight – is getting involved in the pre-fight trash talk.
Let’s see if the Wild Card Gym owner is right at the final bell.

A QUICK GLIMPSE AT THE ARENA
The Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta is ready for one of the biggest fights of the year.
Not long now until the spectators start filling it up.

    LATE ADDITION TO THE CARD
Triller have announced a late addition to the Paul vs Askren card.
And it involves none other than WWE legend Rick Flair. Flair, 72, won’t be boxing, however.
No, The Nature Boy will be the special guest referee for a a slapping match.
Yes, you read that correctly. A slapping match. As if this fight card couldn’t get any weirder.

    JOR DROPPING
Ben Askren – who fights Jake Paul tonight – was on the wrong end of the fastest knockout in UFC history against Jorge Masvidal.
The welterweight pair fought at UFC 239 in July 2019 after a bitter build-up, but no one could have foreseen the dramatic early stoppage.

    FIGHTING TALK
Jake Paul has thrown down one of his final social media barbs before tonight’s fight.

    WHAT HAVE THEY SAID?
Jake Paul: “You f****d up, Ben by taking this fight. April 17, I promised my team, my family, my brother who is there right next to you right now, I promise to make you go down as history as the world’s worst UFC fighter.
Ben Askren: “We haven’t seen anything.
“The level of his competition was so low that it was almost impossible to tell if he is actually good at this.
“If there is one thing people respect about all fighters it’s the toughness to deal with adversity in battle and we have not seen that out of him.
“I don’t think he was hit hard by either one of those guys. They were so incredibly terrible at boxing. So we haven’t seen anything out of him yet.”
    JAKE OF ALL TRADES
Jake Paul is adamant Floyd Mayweather has ‘lost his mind’ after the legendary boxer challenged him to an exhibition fight.
He told TMZ: “This guy is out of his mind! He just calls me out, out of nowhere — same with 50 Cent!
“I mean, he hasn’t even fought my brother yet. It just seems like he’s losing his marbles … like what the f*** is this guy doing?!”
    PAUL TO PLAY FOR
Logan Paul mocked Ben Askren and said anyone who thinks the retired UFC welterweight will beat his brother Jake are ‘f***ing morons’.
He said: “I get it, guys I like Ben Askren. We like him, he’s a good guy, he’s funny, he’s entertaining, great personality.
“But if you think for one f***ing second, that this guy is going to beat my brother tomorrow, you’re a f***ing moron.
“Straight up. Like y’all thought and afterwards everyone’s going to be like, ‘Oh, we should have seen it coming’.
    “No s***. You’re crazy.”
    TALE OF THE TAPE
Here’s how Jake Paul and Ben Askren compare.

    ASK AGAIN
CM Punk warned Ben Askren is being underestimated and tipped his former training partner to surprise Jake Paul.
The WWE legend shared the Roufusport gym with Askren while he trained for his two UFC fights, which he both lost.
He told TMZ Sports: “I think so, but I think it’s easy to do, based on it’s easy to sit on your couch and say that Ben isn’t a striker.
“But he’s a decelerated athlete at a very, very high level in two different sports.
“Mindset and mentally is a big thing when you’re fighting and Ben has that in spades.
“Is Ben gonna come out there and look like Muhammad Ali? No, probably not. But Ben knows what it takes to win a fight.
“The skillset in boxing is different, the rules are different, so he’s going to approach it to the best of his abilities so he can win that fight.
“And I know a lot of people are counting him out but I don’t think people should be surprised if he wins.”

Demetrius Andrade crushes Liam Williams’ WBO middleweight title dreams in unanimous decision

WELSH WARRIOR Liam Williams had his middleweight world title dream dashed by brilliant American southpaw champion Demetrius Andrade. The Clydach 28-year-old flew to Florida for a longshot at dethroning the 33-year-old undefeated leftie.

But he came face-to-face with a masterful fighter who almost stopped him in the opener, floored him in the second and then slipped and grabbed his way to a points win.
Team USA’s 2008 Beijing Olympian walked to the ring in a baseball cap emblazoned with ‘WAR’ in honour of recently deceased middleweight legend and fellow southpaw Marvin Hagler and put on a showing the icon would be proud of.
The judges called it: 116-111, 118-109 and 118-109.
Williams said:  “Demetrius is a very good fighter, better than I thought, more slippery than he appears on TV.
“I could not get my punches or combinations off, I felt I hurt him a couple of times but he was always gone before I could capitalise on it.
“I know I am tough and can take a good shot, I knew I had taken his best shot in the second and I got up so I had nothing to fear.
“I don’t feel I need to take a step back, I believe now I am world level.
“I know I gave him a bit of stick in the build-up but he is quality and probably only Canelo in the division is a better champion than him.”

It was a violent start and Williams was hurt instantly when Andrade unloaded a huge left hook off the ropes.
The Brit was buzzed but went on the front foot instead of covering up and trying to survive.
Andrade‘s lead southpaw uppercut was vicious and Williams was nursing a heavily swollen cheek from the second minute.
A straight one-two smashed into his nose as well, as the usually cautious American went hell for leather.
In his camouflage shorts, Andrade was hard to find in the second and he brutalised Williams again with a meaty left backhand and an uppercut that scythed through his guard.
Williams was warned for roughhouse tactics with thirty seconds of the round remaining, he switched off for a nanosecond and was punished with a massive one-two that decked him for a count.
The third looked like being a breather for Andrade but he landed again with a minute left in the session and Williams was held up by the ropes.
But the Brit bravely bashed and bullied his way back into the bout with a strong finish to the stanza.

Brave effort by @Liamwilliamsko tonight. Hurt early but came back and showed he belongs at world level hurting Andrade In the 9th. Bad Ref frustrating and allowed way too much holding!— Joe Calzaghe (@RealJoeCalzaghe) April 17, 2021

The fourth was a huge improvement for Williams, with a couple of shots landing flush and Boo Boo’s legs looking heavy under the constant pressure.
Sheffield trainer Dominic Ingle kept telling his charge that Andrade was going to wilt in the back half of the fight but Williams was worried his footwork was not up to the task.
If Andrade took a rest in the fourth, he clocked back in the fifth with a series of those trademark uppercuts that Williams at least knew to expect but could not avoid.
Thin-skinned Williams was cut by the end of the round and had blood dripping down into his right eye.
Andrade complained of an eye poke in the sixth and he continued to hold and smother and Williams’ freakish pace.
But a thunderous lead uppercut sliced through his guard again and rocked his shaven head back toward the Florida heavens.
Right at the end of the seventh Williams was whacked again and had to cling on for the bell to save him after Andrade slipped up a gear.
Williams dared to drop his hands in the eighth and dare his opponent to hit him but he waited until Williams had his guard up to land another uppercut.
Andrade appeared to be hurt in the ninth by a right hand but Williams did not seem to have the energy to finish him and shipped a bodyshot for his trouble.

Andrade definitely tired in the final few rounds, against Williams’ relentlessness it would be almost impossible not to.
But he grabbed the penultimate round with a pinpoint combination that the judges would have loved.
And the pair, who had swapped spiteful insults over the months of build-up, hugged at the final bell after both giving it their all. More
