Purists have bemoaned the ever-growing noise surrounding Paul’s foray into the sport.
But they can’t argue that he at least draws eyeballs.
His easy KO of grapple-heavy former MMA fighter Askren drew in 1.5million buys.
This kind of number puts Paul, 24, in elite company.
His Saturday night victory pulled in the same number of buys as Floyd Mayweather’s 2012 bout with Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto.
In fact, only fights featuring Mike Tyson or Mayweather have EVER managed to secure more PPV buys than Saturday night’s at-times maligned match-up.
And No2 on the list also featured a crossover from a former MMA champion, when Conor McGregor’s 2017 bout with Mayweather reeled in 4.3million buys.
At No1, with 4.6million sales, was Mayweather’s long-awaited clash with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

As Paul chases boxing legitimacy, as well as more millions in the bank account, eyes have turned to what could be next for the Problem Child.
He revealed before Saturday night that he feels that he is on a collision course with Conor McGregor.
But with the Notorious aiming to get his UFC career back on track against Dustin Poirier on July 10, Tommy Fury has emerged as a serious contender.
WBC heavyweight champ Tyson’s little brother, 21, called Paul out in the wake of his victory over Askren.
And Paul has stoked the flames further, by bringing Tommy’s girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague into it.
The American claimed: “Tommy is weak… and Tommy’s girlfriend [Molly-Mae Hague] DM’d me before they went on that reality show.”
He has form for taunting his rivals by mentioning their other halves after he made derogatory remarks about McGregor’s partner Dee Devlin.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could make ring walks at SAME TIME to avoid contract row in £500m undisputed fight

ANTHONY JOSHUA and Tyson Fury could make their incredible ring walks simultaneously to avoid a contract row and make a stunning undisputed spectacle.Traditionally the challenger walks to the ring first, with the champion following with a longer and more extravagant version.
Fury and Joshua are waiting for a date and location to be confirmed for their undisputed clashCredit: AFP
That means the challenger’s entrance cheers are forgotten and his pre-fight warm-up is wasted, as he is forced to wait awkwardly in the ring.
But promoter Eddie Hearn does not expect the detail to scupper the £200million Saudi showdown between two reigning heavyweight champions.
And he has a stunning plan in the mix that would have both British icons walk to the ring at the same time, from opposite sides of the indoor venue.
When asked what the plan was, Hearn said: “You will see. Maybe they will walk at the same time.
“It would be unique. From different sides of the arena. That would solve a problem.
“In the world today, people are more willing to be accepting and understanding and rather than muck about with it, let’s just get this done. So I don’t think we will have any problems.
“The walk in at the same time is genuinely something I have thought about as a spectacle rather than a contractual issue.”
Fight fans have been concerned by comments from Fury and his father John that the talks were stalling and deadlines to confirm the deal had passed.

But Hearn – who only promotes WBA, IBF and WBO champ Joshua directly – visited the undefeated 6ft 9in ace in Vegas last week, after both fighters agreed on an offer, and got good vibes from the big man.
“I ran round there and we just had 10 minutes in his suite but it was good to hear how dialled in he is for the fight,” the Matchroom boss said.
“When I saw the comments from him and his dad, I wanted reassurance that, when I deliver it, they will want it.
“I have spoken to Fury’s team and told them to hang in there, because I will get it done.
“Once they saw the offer, they felt a bit of positivity and believe the fight is happening and it makes for a better relationship.
“I think they are happy now because everyone has got what they wanted.”
July 24 is the pencilled date Hearn and his team are working around but he admits that might creep into August.
That clashes directly with the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics where Joshua’s mentor Rob McCracken is scheduled to lead Team GB and hopefully unearth the next British boxing superstar.
And Hearn admits AJ Boxing have tough calls to make as the man Joshua describes as the Alex Ferguson of his team could well be double booked.
He added: “There are too many people and things to fit around already with the fighters, trainers, countries, time zones, the Olympics.
“There is all this stuff so whatever date we are given by the site is the date that we will go with.
“I know AJ and Rob have been talking accordingly so I am sure they will work it out.
Hearn has elaborate plans for the way Joshua and Fury could ring walkCredit: Mark Robinson Matchroom Boxing
“The guys know it will be around the Olympics, it could be inappropriate but it is the biggest fight in boxing and the biggest moment in AJ’s career so we have to work it out.
“I know Rob takes his Team GB position very seriously, he loves the job and the kids so it’s not ideal but we can’t move it a couple of weeks either side.
“Someone is spending a lot of money so we have to go whenever they say.”
Deontay Wilder’s claim to a third Fury fight and Oleksandr Usyk’s right to a mandatory shot at Joshua were believed to be sticking points in the two-fight plan.
But Hearn believes there are now zero hurdles in the way and it is just a matter of when the super-fight is announced.
He explained: “You get a written offer come in, heads are turned and from there you accept the offer, which we have done.
“Then it is on to long form contracts for the site agreement, that was on Monday or Tuesday.
“It’s a huge deal, so it is not something that requires just one draft.
“There have been drafts going backwards and forwards between our lawyers and Top Rank’s lawyers. It’s close. There are zero hold-ups now.”

Floyd Mayweather leaves followers stunned with new look as fans question whether boxing legend has had hair transplant

BOXING legend Floyd Mayweather has left fans questioning whether he has had a hair transplant after showing off his new look on Instagram. The 44-year-old – who has rocked a bald look since 2008 – posted a picture of himself with a full head of hair, much to the confusion of his 25.2 million followers.

His picture has been liked over 363,000 times, with users taken aback by his transformation.
It remains unclear if Mayweather – who won 15 world titles across five weight classes – has simply grown out his hair, or had a transplant.
American rapper 50 Cent speculated earlier this year whether he has undergone surgery on his head as well as his beard.
And others shared the same opinion, as one commented: “Transplant on point.”
Another messaged: “The double hair transplant look.”
A third added: “He’s had a hair and beard transplant recently.”
Meanwhile one remarked: “Lovely beard transplant haha.”
Another simply stated: “Hair transplant? Was sure he was bald.”

Fans accuse Jake Paul and Ben Askren fight of being FIXED after footage emerge of ex-UFC star being pummelled in MMA

FANS have sensationally suggested Jake Paul’s fight was Ben Askren was FIXED as shock conspiracy theories swarmed social media.Paul, 24, extended his professional boxing record to 3-0 with a brutal first-round KO of former UFC star Askren on Saturday night.
Fans have suggested Jake Paul’s fight with Ben Askren was fixed for a number of intriguing reasonsCredit: Getty
Askren was spotted laughing as he exited the ring moments after his KO at the hands of Paul
But viewers have been left convinced the result of the fight was pre-determined for a number of intriguing reasons.
Fans have suggested Askren – who retired from MMA in 2019 – was happy to lose to Paul and agreed to do so at the time of signing up for the fight.
The theory claims Paul was itching to be taken more seriously as a boxer – having only fought fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib and ex-NBA star Nate Robinson.
It’s suggested he therefore asked the ex-UFC grappler to help boost his credibility with a massively-hyped, but ultimately fixed, fight.
After the fight, Askren, 36, claimed losing to Paul was ‘f***ing embarrassing’ – but he said so with a beaming grin on his face.
He was also spotted smiling and laughing as he exited the ring just moments after being knocked out.
UFC fans were left particularly perplexed by his KO, sharing videos of Askren ‘eating punches’ from Robbie Lawler in March 2019 – his last professional MMA win.
Taking to Twitter, one viewer shared a video of the battering, captioned: “Askren ate these punches from Lawler but couldn’t take one punch from Jake Paul?”

Askren grinned as he called his KO at the hands of Paul ’embarrassing’
Everyone saying the fight was rigged is tweeting off their moms WiFi— Jake Paul (@jakepaul) April 18, 2021

The conspiracy theory continued by pointing to the fact boxing fans are saying Paul only won as he wasn’t fighting a ‘real’ boxer – therefore suggesting the YouTuber is now a ‘real’ boxer himself.
That therefore opens Paul up to securing a fight with a pro boxer in the coming months.
In the meantime, Paul has been able to train without the pressure of taking on a professional, out-and-out boxer and improve his skills.
He was also able to boost his pro record to 3-0 and his stock continues to rise.
Of course, all of this ‘evidence’ is purely circumstantial – there is still every chance Paul was just the better fighter on the night.
After all, the punch that floored Askren was a crunching right-hook.
And while Askren was used to ‘eating punches’ while on the canvas, surviving one while standing up and caught off guard is a different skill altogether.
Paul angrily refuted claims of a ‘rigged’ fight, tweeting: “Everyone saying the fight was rigged is tweeting off their moms WiFi.”

And the 32-year-old has spoke of his disappointment that he can’t inflict a first professional defeat on Joshua after Andy Ruiz Jr stopped him in New York.
Speaking to ESPN, the WBC king said: “It was important to me a year or so ago when he was unbeaten, but I seen him get knocked out before, it takes the cherry off the cake.
“Before the loss against Ruiz, people thought that he had a chance against me.
“Now if you look at all these boxing forums and all the votes and stuff it’s 90 per cent in my favour.
“I really love challenges, when people don’t think I can win fights, that’s when I rise to the challenge.
“Anthony Joshua, he’s a British guy, he’s got a few belts, so we’ll make the fight happen and I’ll show you what a real man does to a fake one in the AJ fight.”
Fury also believes it will be an easy night’s work as he claimed AJ won’t be able to stand up to his power.
He added: “It’s pretty simple – hit him in the face a few times and he’ll fall over.
