Ben Askren shed almost two STONE for Jake Paul fight but claims his physique ‘looks like s***’ after hip surgery

BEN ASKREN shed almost two stone for his fight with Jake Paul. But the beaten boxing debutant insists his physique ‘looks like s***’ since undergoing hip surgery.
Ben Askren physique around the Jake Paul fight came in for heavy criticismCredit: Instagram @triller
Askren, 36, hit the canvas in the first round against the YouTuber.
He tried to get back up from a right-hand blow and carry on but the referee called it off with less than 60 seconds on the clock.
Askren tipped the scales at 191lbs for his lucrative clash with the social media star, which earned him a guaranteed £500,000.
But ESPN’s Stephen A Smith said he ‘should be ashamed of himself’ for ‘coming in looking like a fat slob, like somebody’s grandparent’.
Paul also mocked his opponent, slamming him for his ‘beer belly’.
However, the former Olympic wrestler revealed the physical ordeal he went through to get in shape for the brief bout.
Asked if he trained for the fight, Askren told ESPN MMA: “Absolutely. I get it. Part of it is my physique looks like s***. You made fun of me when I was 170lbs.
“What do you think is going to happen when you add 20lbs to that physique? When I first started training, I weighed 215. I hadn’t been working out.

“My hip surgery. I had just been cleared to get back into it. I ended up losing 22lbs or something like that. I lost a lot of weight.
“If the fight were at 170, I would have said, ‘I can’t get there in that time. It’s impossible because of where I’m starting at.’
“I was retired – this came out of nowhere. The only thing I focused on during camp was the boxing skill part of it and getting in shape to fight eight rounds hard. That was it.”
There were accusations the fight was fixed because Askren went down in the opening stages and it was immediately called off.
But he is adamant he tried to convince the referee to let him continue.
Quizzed on his first pro boxing fight being rigged, Askren added: “That’s human nature, but it definitely didn’t happen.
“I got hit. I guess the question I ask those people is, ‘What do I gain by it?’ I told you what I made for this fight: it was a very nice pay cheque.
“I thought I was ready to fight [on], I told the guy I was ready to fight.

Jake Paul is cutting no corners with his diet
“It was the spot behind the ear is where he hit me. I didn’t really feel it, and I got up. There wasn’t a lot of pain there.
“He hit me hard enough to knock me down. I got up, and the referee said, ‘You didn’t get up fast enough,’ and I said ‘OK,’
“Obviously, I would have liked to have won, but the referee stopped it.
“I said, ‘Are you really sure that’s what you want to do?’ and he said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘I’m fine.’
“Then I said, ‘I don’t need to be here anymore, I’m out of here.’ I don’t regret taking the fight at all.
“The only reason I would not have taken the fight actually happened. The ability to have an embarrassing moment, and that’s a terrible reason not to do it.
“I said the reason I took it is that I’m getting paid really well, and it was a fun opportunity.”

Conor McGregor vows to ‘break a few faces’ as UFC star is tipped for shock boxing comeback by sparring partner

CONOR MCGREGOR has a big chip on his shoulder ahead of his return to the octagon – and plans to use it to ‘break a few faces’.The Notorious is gearing up for a trilogy fight with former featherweight foe Dustin Poirier, whom he’ll meet on July 10 in the main event of UFC 264 in Las Vegas.

McGregor, 32, suffered a brutal second-round KO loss to The Diamond in January and is determined to remind the world he’s still an elite lightweight in their rubber match.
He tweeted: “I’ve got a big chip on my shoulder and I’m gonna break another few faces with it.”
McGregor’s vow to ‘break another few faces’ with his shoulder – which he shattered Donald Cerrone’s nose with at UFC 246 – came after he was embroiled in a row with lightweight rival Justin Gaethje.
Former interim lightweight champ Gaethje took aim at the UFC’s poster boy after seeing him criticise his head coach Trevor Wittman for not competing in mixed martial arts.
And that drew a quick and blistering response from Mystic Mac.
He replied: “I’d smoke you and your coach at the same time in these patented @McGregorFast fight gloves.”

Despite his efforts currently being focused on mixed martial arts, McGregor continues to be linked with a return to the boxing world – which he entered in August 2017 for a blockbuster fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
YouTube star Jake Paul has been trying to lure the Irishman back to the ring and renewed his calls for the fight after his one-minute decimation of former UFC star Ben Askren.
McGregor’s recent sparring partner Dylan Moran reckons the UFC’s first simultaneous two-division champion will return to the squared circle one day, telling Sky Sports: “There are plenty of years left in Conor.
“Wherever the big fights are at. You can see by the rematch with Dustin that he doesn’t shy away from challenges.

“If the right challenge is put to him, he will take it on board.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Conor back in the boxing ring, for sure.
“I’ve been in there with him at Irish level, European level and world level. Conor has given it to me as much as anyone. That speaks for itself.
“When you are a person of Conor’s notes, you will have naysayers and doubters of the highest degree. Even if his boxing was the best, people would say it’s useless.
“I’ve sparred him. I’ve been in there with him, and I’m a boxer. So my opinion is one to listen to.”

And the change of scenery has clearly left the WBC heavyweight titleholder in a good mood.
On Tuesday, Fury tweeted a picture of himself looking dapper in a gold Versace dressing gown in his Vegas digs.
The photo’s accompanying caption read: “Living the dream.”
Fury’s long-awaited showdown with Joshua moved a huge step closer to coming to fruition last week when the pair agreed on a venue for their blockbuster showdown.
Saudi Arabia has landed the first of the duo’s two multi-million-pound fights.
July 24, July 31 and August 7 are the three dates currently on the table.

An official announcement is expected within the next two weeks.
Fury’s co-promoter, Bob Arum, told Boxing Scene: “It’s going to have to be within the next 10 days, maybe two weeks.
    “It’s a massive economic deal.”
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, insists the biggest fight in the history of British boxing is close to being finalised.
He told The Telegraph: “We all know now that both sides have signed the contract, they have both accepted one specific proposal and we are finalising that with contracts going backwards and forwards and tiny, tiny points getting ironed out.
Bob Arum has revealed Saudi Arabia have landed the first instalment of Joshua vs FuryCredit: Getty
“We haven’t finalised an exact date, July 24 is the rough date but it may leak into early August but no later than that.
“The Olympics will be a different timezone so it’s not really in the mindset.”
He later added: “There is no hold-up.
“You get a written offer come in, from there you accept the offer, which we have done, and then it is on to long form contracts for the site agreement.

“That’s where we are now. It’s a huge deal, so it is not something that requires just one draft.
“There have been drafts going backwards and forwards between our lawyers and Top Rank’s lawyers.
“I have missed a couple of deadlines so I don’t want to keep coming up with new ones.
“It’s close. There is zero hold-up.”

“This is the right guy with the right shtick at the right time. This guy is playing this thing perfectly,” he added.
“And boxing is in such a bad place, they’re doing a really good job at sucking in people to buy into this thing. And good for him.”

The Briton is less than three weeks out from the biggest fight of his career
And the WBO champion is going about the build-up in the right manner as he appears to be training away seriously hard in Las Vegas.

However, he has not fought anyone with the skill set of Alvarez, who at 30 years of age already boasts an extensive resume which consists of 55 wins, one loss and two draws.
