Canelo Alvarez’s incredible body transformation from welterweight to light-heavyweight and winning at super-middleweight

CANELO ALVAREZ is boxing’s pound-for-pound king having now won world titles in FOUR different weight divisions.Most-recently, the Mexican, 30, dominated British star Callum Smith to win the WBA, The Ring and WBC super-middleweight titles.
Canelo most-recently dropped down to super-middleweight to beat Smith
But before that, Canelo had leapt from middleweight to LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT to beat Sergey Kovalev in 2019.
That win saw him join legendary Mexican’ Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Jorge Arce as four-division world champions.
Having started his career at 15, Alvarez fluctuated in weight, even fighting at the light-welterweight limit of 140lbs before settling in at welterweight.
Winning his first world title at light-middleweight, SunSport investigates the dramatic body transformation Canelo has been through in his career…
    Welterweight
After 33 bouts, Alvarez made his US debut on October 2008 beating Larry Mosley and recorded another win Stateside before returning back to Mexico for two years and nine fights.
When he returned he defended his NABF welterweight title against Jose Cotto in what turned out to be his last contest at 147lbs.

    Light-middleweight
Canelo first won a world title at 154lbs beating Ricky Hatton’s brother Matthew in California.
The Mexican eased to a points decision but was much trimmer in frame and bulk with a baby face.
He would make five defences of the WBC belt before unifying against Austin Trout in April 2013 also claiming the WBA strap.
At aged 23, Canelo would defend his light-middleweight titles against ring legend Floyd Mayweather – but was made to suffer on the scales.

    Floyd Mayweather
Mayweather only moved up from welterweight to face Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, but did so once again to challenge rising star Canelo in September 2013.
But the American boxing great – who promoted and managed himself – proved he is a veteran of the business side of the sport by forcing Alvarez to contract stipulations.
The Vegas bout was made at a catchweight of 152lbs, meaning the champion had to lose an extra two pounds – and Canelo claimed Mayweather even tried to put a rehydration clause in the contract.
Mayweather reportedly weighed 150lbs, below weight, and Alvarez came in at 165 pounds, putting on almost a stone – but was still outpointed by his American rival.

    Middleweight
Canelo moved up to middleweight two years after his first defeat, and learned from Mayweather on how to use his star power.
Despite campaigning in the 160lbs division, the Mexican hero forced his opponents to fight at a catchweight of 155lbs, first winning the The Ring, Lineal, and WBC titles against Cotto.
Brit Amir Khan even moved up to middleweight to fight Canelo at 155lbs, but was brutally KO’d in six rounds before Alvarez moved back to light-middleweight to win the WBO title from Merseysider Liam Smith.
He only dropped back to 154lbs after being mandated by the WBC to face Gennady Golovkin, but promoter De La Hoya insisted his man was not yet a true middleweight.

    Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
Canelo beat Smith for the WBO belt in his final fight at 154lbs.
Despite De La Hoya claiming the Mexican was not yet ready to box at 160lbs, one fight later Alvarez would face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a 164.5lbs catchweight bout – ABOVE the middleweight limit.
The fight was used as a tester before Canelo matched up against middleweight rival GGG, as Chavez Jr was easily outpointed.

    Super-middleweight
After two contentious results against Golvokin at middleweight – that saw Canelo walk away with a draw and win – he announced a move up to 168lbs to face Brit Rocky Fielding.
The Mexican would challenge for the WBA’s understudy super-middleweight world title, which he won with ease in three rounds.
Canelo was much the smaller man but targeted Fielding’s body to win a world title in his third weight, and then revealed he would be open to fighting world champion Smith.

    Daniel Jacobs
After winning a super-middleweight belt, WBC and WBA middleweight champion Canelo returned to 160lbs, facing Daniel Jacobs with the IBF title also on the line.
Alvarez’s move back down eight pounds did nothing to dent his reflexes and power as he put on a great display of defence and aggression on the way to a points win.
Canelo stuck with the IBF’s 170lbs rehydration clause, but Jacobs did not, meaning he lost the belt on the scales after coming in at 173.6lbs for tactical reasons.

    Sergey Kovalev
After adding another middleweight belt to his collection Alvarez decided not to defend them against rival Golovkin in a trilogy bout.
Instead he replicated US legends such as Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins and Sugar Ray Leonard who all won 175lbs titles.
Canelo hinted he would stick to the weight after beating Kovalev, but instead slipped back to super-middleweight for his next fight against Smith.

    Callum Smith
Canelo weighed in for his super-middleweight win over Smith
Canelo cemented himself as a fully-fledged four-division champion after dominating Britain’s brave and resilient Smith after weighing in at the 168lb limit exactly.
The Mexican superstar walked away with the WBA super-middleweight crown, two years after winning their secondary ‘Regular’ title.
Canelo had too much power and precision for Smith and stormed to victory after 12 one-sided and almost identical rounds in Texas.
He defended the titles in a mandatory challenge against Avni Yildirim in February and now faces Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday, his fourth at super-middle.
    Cruiserweight?
Canelo Alvarez has ruled out a move to cruiserweightCredit: AFP
Jones Jr was the only boxer ever to go from middleweight to heavyweight champion, after he dethroned John Ruiz in 2003 to become WBA champion, but skipped over cruiserweight.
He vacated his heavyweight title straight away, moving back down to light-heavyweight, and later in his career campaigned at cruiserweight, but never for a world title.
Last year, Canelo stated he would dare to go all the way up to cruiserweight.
He said: “It sounds very crazy, but you never know.”

He captioned it: “Just bought me another house in Vegas,” while tagging in his trainer SugarHill Steward.
Fury added: “Keeping it real here in Sin City, started with a big dream now chasing legendary status.”
The 32-year-old lives in a modest £550,000 house in Morecambe despite making millions from boxing.
In 2018 he appeared to get on the property ladder out in Spain, once again posing outside a grand mansion with arms outstretched.
He shared the photo to Instagram, writing alongside: “New house had to treat myself. Been a long time coming.
“But the Mack in back [sic]. MTV Cribs blessed by God.”
The Gypsy King is still waiting for his undisputed heavyweight clash against Joshua to get over the line.
Despite AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn hoping to officially announce the fight by Saturday, Fury is ‘frustrated’ by it rumbling on, according to one of his team.

Tommy Lee told Sky Sports: “He is frustrated. The end-date was February, then it was March, now we’re still going on.
“He’s very frustrated that the biggest, most powerful people in boxing can’t seem to get the deal done for whatever reason.”
But Fury has looked less-than-angry during his time in Las Vegas, as he mixes up training with living the high life.
He brilliantly hit back at Eddie Hearn over the promoter’s claims he was ‘swanning around’ in his Las Vegas hotel.

The 32-year-old shared a clip of him and trainer SugarHill Steward dressed in bright yellow and blue Versace dressing gowns in a casino.
“Here we are, two bosses on the casino floor Versaced up, breakfast by the pool” said Fury.
“LIving the dream. Eddie, wish you could be him but you’re not.”
Hearn’s remarks came after Fury had uploaded a video to Instagram of him dancing with his top off in a Vegas hotel suite.
The Gypsy King is due to be ringside for his friend Billy Joe Saunders’ fight against Canelo Alvarez on Saturday.
And he could finally see the AJ fight officially confirmed for August 7 in Saudi Arabia after he first revealed a two-fight deal had been agreed in principle last June.

Dillian Whyte brands Andy Ruiz Jr a ‘waste man’ as Brit slams former champ’s comeback win over Chris Arreola

DILLIAN WHYTE has branded Andy Ruiz Jr a ‘waste man’ after the former champion’s comeback win over Chris Arreola. The new slimmed-down Ruiz Jr, two stone lighter than in his defeat to Anthony Joshua 18 months ago, won a fascinating 12-rounder on points in Los Angeles at the weekend.

Ruiz Jr needed a points decision win in his first fight since losing to Anthony Joshua 18 months ago
A points decision went the former champ’s way in California
But Whyte was not impressed, blasting Ruiz Jr’s performance on social media.
He said: “Andy ‘Destroyer’, you are a waste man.
“You couldn’t stop Chris. Chris is light work now. S****t.”
Whyte’s war of words could pave the way for a potential fight between the pair, who both have eyes on current heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.
As for Ruiz Jr’s fight with Arreola, the 31-year-old revved up his lightning-quick hands early on but found himself on one knee in the second round.
A slick one-two from Arreola, 40, opened the door to a huge shock.
Another scare in the third demanded Ruiz Jr rediscover his brawler’s mentality and he ended the round in blistering fashion.
The next couple of rounds went to Ruiz Jr before an energetic round six tired Arreola, who was then held back by a shoulder injury and swollen left eye.

Canelo Alvarez says his four children will stop him turning into another fallen boxing hero ahead of Saunders showdown

BOXING’S biggest superstar believes his iron will and four bambinos will stop him joining the sport’s long list of tragic fallen heroes.Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is a 30-year-old four-weight world champion, the biggest cash cow in the hurt business and a national icon in fight-mad Mexico.
Family man Canelo has vowed never to become a boxing fallen hero as he keeps his feet on the ground
Canelo believes his four children will help him remain grounded and avoid the pitfalls many sporting legends have fallen foul of in the past
And the pound-for-pound No1 will own three of the four super-middleweight titles if he can beat brilliant undefeated Brit and WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders in Texas on Saturday.
But the flame-haired powerhouse, who made his pro bow aged just 15, insists he will never fall into the traps that left too many legends before him bankrupt, broken-down and doomed.
Canelo earned around £15 for his fighting debut in 2005.
And when asked how the 11-fight £280million deal he signed in 2018 did not corrupt the youngest of eight kids, he said: “I believe that you are born with a certain mentality and I think that I have that.
“It is not really hard for me to continue in that line.
“I know what I want and I know that to stay on that path I need discipline and to be grounded and I believe that’s the sort of mentality you’re born with.
“My kids will be the ones that keep me grounded. I always think about them before I make any decisions.
“I know the repercussions and the impact that it will have in their life so they are the ones I always think of first.”

How Canelo and Saunders compare ahead of their bout
🥊 CANELO VS SAUNDERS: TV, live stream and start time info ahead of the big fight

The hardest game really is a family business for Canelo.
All six of his older brothers fought for money and the boxing brood is in the Guinness Book of Records for all seven being on the same 2008 card, with Canelo one of four winners.
So he never hesitates in letting his three daughters and baby son Saul Jr watch him in action, as they have to learn where their luxurious lifestyle comes from.
Canelo said: “Yes they are allowed to watch me fight live. This is what their dad does and they have to watch and support it.
“They really admire what I do so ys, they do watch live.”
The Guadalajara gunslinger has now slain SIX Brits in his illustrious career.
And the 2018 win over Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding looks even more impressive as it has since been revealed he negotiated the release of his kidnapped brother just days before the three-round demolition.
But the 58-fight veteran, with a 2013 points loss to Floyd Mayweather the only defeat, can handle the hottest situations as has ice running through his veins from the family’s other trade.

Canelo said: “My father used to sell ice creams from a truck and I used to help him make them from when I was five to 17 years old.
“Then my family told me to start just devoting my time to boxing. But yeah, I did help him in the ice cream business.
“I used to eat them all of the time.I could eat a litre of shaved ice all by myself in just three minutes.”
Even with the best record in British boxing and world titles at 11st 7lbs and 12st, Saunders remains an unfulfilled talent.
In wins over Andy Lee and David Lemieux the 31-year-old Hatfields man oozed class and flashes of power but his natural talent has allowed him to coast in too many underwhelming bouts.
The southpaw has become more infamous for his trash talk than his quality boxing but Canelo is ready for both this week.
He said: “I think he is a little bit more complicated as a fighter than some of my previous opponents.
“He’s complicated, he is left handed, his movement is good, so it’s going to be a tough one in the early rounds.
“He might try to get under my skin but he won’t achieve that.”

Lewis embarked on a furious Twitter rampage after it emerged Triller – who hosted Paul’s recent win over Askren – was suing illegal streamers to the tune of £72million ($100m).
The 1988 Olympic gold medallist claimed illegal streaming was inevitable given their target audience were too young to afford the £36 ($50) PPV fee.
Quote-tweeting an article about Triller suing, Lewis wrote: “What did they expect?
“The majority of the marketing was on social media targeting teenagers.
“Do teenagers really have $50 for PPV?”
When one Twitter user replied by saying YouTubers fighting pro fighters was ‘ridiculous’, Lewis hit back: “Name 1 youtuber that has faced a #professional boxer?”
After being reminded Paul is a licensed professional, Lewis took yet another swipe at the ‘farce’.
He wrote: “Now we are getting to the root of the problem.

“Licensed as a professional boxer with a record of NOT fighting a boxer.

He wrote: “Anyone can get a license doesn’t mean they are boxer with skills.
“Recipe for disaster when someone gets hurt.”
Lewis recently confirmed he is preparing for an exhibition fight with Tyson – 19 years after they fought as pros – with the veterans having a combined age of 109.
And when one tweeter pointed out the irony of him getting back in the ring himself at the age of 55, Lewis hit back saying he’s not claiming to be a pro any more.

Lewis tweeted: “Skewing the topic eh.. my whole thread/topic is about pretenders.
“Now some people can’t separate the meaning of retired boxers #exhibition from pro boxers match.
“No retired boxer is actually fighting as a professional. Why is this so hard to conceptualise?”
Lewis is set to fight Tyson, 54, for a second time in September following Iron Mike’s comeback draw with Roy Jones Jr last November.

The Gypsy King is due to be ringside and could finally see the bout officially confirmed for August 7 in Saudi Arabia after he first revealed a two-fight deal had been agreed in principle last June.
Fury has been training with Sugarhill Steward in Las Vegas with Tommy Lee – a key member of his entourage – leading Joseph Parker to victory over Derek Chisora on Saturday.
And Lee told Sky Sports: “He is frustrated. The end-date was February, then it was March, now we’re still going on.
“He’s very frustrated that the biggest, most powerful people in boxing can’t seem to get the deal done for whatever reason.”
Lee allayed concerns the fight could collapse but hinted he was unsure about the effect the prolonged talks could have on Fury despite his great physical condition.
He added: “It’s inevitable that it will happen.
“But all this sitting around and waiting? Tyson could have fought in February or March. He’s been held up by it. He does like to be active.

“He trains hard anyway. He pushes himself further and further every day.
“You think: ‘Where is the ceiling?’ But he keeps going and going and going.

Following his exhibition draw with Roy Jones Jr, 52, the heavyweight legend is looking for his next fight.
He is currently in talks for a rematch 19 years in the making with Lennox Lewis, 55, and claimed the fight was set for September.
But Bryan, 31, instead laid out a sensational proposal and called out Tyson, 54, to defend his secondary world title against the icon, who is 23-years his senior.
Via World Boxing News, he said: “Bring on Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. I’ll take their belts and become the undisputed heavyweight champion.
“I’ll even give Iron Mike Tyson the opportunity to come back and fight me for my title. I’m more than ready, so let’s get it on. We are ready to go.
“I’ll take on Mike Tyson for a tune-up, and then I’ll fight either Joshua or Fury the same night.”
Bryan won the belt against in January, beating ex-WBC champion Bermane Stiverne, but is yet to defend it.

Talks continue to rumble on over his heavyweight title unification fight with Anthony Joshua.
But now the Gypsy King’s attention appears to have turned to living his best life and calling out athletes from different sports.
That appeared to have annoyed Hearn, who told talkSPORT last week: “Tyson Fury’s getting right up my nostrils as well.
“He’s a great fighter and he’s a great talker as well.
“I just think when I look at those two together – you’ve got one guy working behind closed doors in Finchley with a dream to become undisputed champion.
“And then you’ve got another bloke who’s swanning around in a suite at the Encore in Las Vegas, wearing terrible Versace shirts, screaming on social media all day calling everyone a dosser.”
However, Fury appears to have taken Hearn’s remarks in his stride, and he could not resist poking fun at him via his Instagram over the weekend.
The 32-year-old shared a clip of him and trainer SugarHill Steward dressed in bright yellow and blue respective dressing gowns in a casino.

Hearn’s remarks came after Fury had uploaded a video to Instagram of him dancing with his top off in a Vegas hotel suite.
He was filmed dancing with his trainer SugarHill Stewart just over a week ago.
The pair were bopping along to 1980 hit You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC.
Fury eventually takes his top off to show rival Joshua how he’s keeping – and looked in great shape.
Stewart also took off his top off later in the video before Fury showed off his best air guitar.

Matchroom boxing chief Hearn said last week he is hoping to officially announce Joshua vs Fury in the coming days with a site and venue agreement finally inching closer.
He said: “I think if we’re not done by the end of next week then we do have a problem.
“I believe you’ll get an announcement next week, I do.
“This morning we received another draft back from the site for the final form. This is a major, major commercial deal.
“We’re talking about major legal companies that are across these drafts, it goes back, then it has to go to about three or four different parties from Tyson Fury’s side, then it goes to our side, AJ’s side, then it goes to the site agreement, the government.

“It’s not something that’s turned around in a few days. We’re right across it, we can’t do any more.
“I’m a one-man army going out to make this fight.
“Like I said, no help from them, all they do is criticise, sitting in his gaff in Beverley Hills, Bob Arum, moaning.
“Get off your backside and do something about it yourself. No, I’ll tell you what, leave it to Eddie.
“Alright, well if you’re gonna leave it to me, be quiet and wait for the contract to come in. It’s on.
“Everybody’s agreed that this fight is happening and I cannot wait because Tyson Fury is going to get knocked out by Anthony Joshua.”
