Joshua, who is closing in on a mega-fight with rival Tyson Fury, said: “I never want to say Covid has been a blessing as for 99 per cent of people it has been so life-changing and tough for people.
“But if there is a positive we got out of this negative it’s I feel like I was going to crash.
“There were times going into training camp I was thinking, ‘I don’t know if I am going to come out the other side of this. I am that ill, run-down’.
“We’re spending a lot of time promoting boxing and it’s hard.
“During the pandemic I was like, ‘Breathe. Take a second’ and I just looked around.”

    What have they said?
Saunders: “I’m not going to sit here and slag people off and big people up. Canelo has been doing it for many, many years now, destroying everyone. Six of those were Brits. I don’t really take anything from any of them because I do my own thing.
“That’s what’s going to win this fight, something I bring to the table that none of them had. Hatton did a good job many years ago, Ryan Rhodes also. I still haven’t watched the Callum Smith fight now, I’ve seen highlights.
“But I think tactics may have been a little bit wrong there and a bit rushed because they didn’t have a lot of preparation for it. That’s what I hear anyway.” More

Joshua Buatsi fears if Arsenal hero Henry has been forced off social media due to racist abuse others don’t have chance

JOSH BUATSI fears if Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has been forced off of social media by racist abuse then most other black sportspeople don’t stand a chance. The Ghana-born South Londoner boldly took the knee before his thrilling October win over Marko Calic to fight against racial injustice.
Josh Buatsi says he has never personally suffered racism in pro boxing – but has not noticed improvement in the wider situationCredit: The Sun
France and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has stopping using social media following abuse
But after spending eight weeks in San Francisco training with new trainer Virgil Hunter, he has returned to an almost identical landscape and learned Gunners icon Henry quit social media all together.
Ahead of Saturday’s Manchester match-up with undefeated Daniel Dos Santos, the 13-0 Rio 2016 bronze winner said: “I don’t think things have really improved but, when we talk about the sport of boxing, I personally have never experienced any racism in professional boxing.
“Internationally, in the amateurs, yes a few times in different countries but in [pro] boxing I have not.
“In the world now, are things changing? No, I think things are still the same.
“I can understand why certain Premier League footballers are saying ‘forget getting the knee, no changes are being made whatsoever’. I can see that.
“When I was in America I think I read that Thierry Henry has quit social media totally, he is just not up for it.
“He was a really good footballer so if people like him are experiencing it, then who knows what other people are experiencing?
“I haven’t thought about taking the knee for this fight yet, we will see.”
Joshua Buatsi overcame Marko Calic last time out in a superb fight in October 2020Credit: Mark Robinson
Buatsi’s last bout went from lockdown learning fight to life-and-death battle when he had a gruesome swelling punched into his left eye.
The Anthony Joshua-managed ace thankfully secured a seventh round stoppage and quickly set out handing over the reigns of his career to the revered American trainer.
Hunter guided the brilliant Andre Ward through a perfect 32-0 career – with world titles in Buatsi’s light-heavy division and the super-middle ranks – so the Brit is blessed to put his world title plans in the mastermind’s hands.
He said: “How many fights away am I from a world title shot? It’s a conversation like this that I have with Virgil.
“Because as the fighter, I’m like, ‘Virgil, let’s fight, let’s fight’.

“But the coaches and those who have gone ahead of you before will have a better idea.
“They will be like, ‘You know what, for one or two fights, fight this type of opponent or that, X, Y or Z, and then we’ll take it’.
“There was a good opponent we were going to have for this fight and we okayed it but there were visa issues that stopped it from happening.
“But Virgil just said, ‘Look, this is the first fight, take a manageable fight, let the style and teamwork gel a bit better and then we go from there’. I said, ‘Cool, that’s fine’”.
Incredibly the university-educated ace is happy to have ditched San Francisco and returned to the UK for May.
The 28-year-old prefers the suburbs of South London to California’s famous bay, iconic Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz attraction.
“San Fran was good and obviously the weather is better over there but I have to put it out there that I prefer England to America any day of the week,” he laughed.

“The training was good, very different to how the Europeans in general train. In Europe we have a structure we follow, theirs is a bit different.
“The running is different, in San Fran there are a lot of hills so the running was quite hard.
“But this is what I need to add to what I’m doing to get to where I need to get to.”

The Icelandic ace previously weight around 180kg but has slimmed for his Eddie Hall fightCredit: Instagram / @thorbjornsson
That is equivalent to 24st 5lb – four stone less than he weighed last year when setting a new deadlift world record at 501kg.
Opponent Hall, 33, has also slimmed down in recent months, cutting down to around 25st.
And all eyes will be on Las Vegas in September when the pair collide to settle their long-running feud which stretches back to their competitive strongman days.
Hall, 6ft 3in tall, is yet to step in the ring for a warm-up fight as the big day draws closer.
But Bjornsson, who stands at 6ft 9in, has already experienced boxing with an exhibition draw against Steven Ward.
The Game of Thrones star, who played Gregor ‘The Mountain Clegane’, is now back in Dubai for a training camp.
He was due to face Alex Simon this month before the Australian suffered a torn bicep.
And Bjornsson will instead take on Simon Vallily on May 28.

Canelo Alvarez furious with behaviour of Billy Joe Saunders and ‘fed up’ as Brit is warned ‘don’t poke the bear’

SAUL ‘CANELO’ ALVAREZ is ‘fed up’ with Billy Joe Saunders ahead of their fight tonight, according to former world champion Chris Algieri.Pound-for-pound king Canelo and WBO super-middleweight champion Saunders will meet in front of 70,000 fans in Texas for three of the 168-pound belts.

And Algieri, who is best known for coming up short against the likes of Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao, feels Saunders has riled the Mexican up throughout fight week.
When asked if Saunders is trying to get under Canelo’s skin, Algieri told Fighthype: “Maybe, but I also think that’s just the way Saunders is, and I mean in terms of his personality, not so much his fighting style.
“Maybe that is why he does that, but I just think that’s the way he is. He’s a ball buster, and it’s hilarious. But Canelo is not looking too enthused.
“I think this is the most focused I’ve seen him in a fight week in a long time. He [Saunders] could [get it to work for him], but Canelo at this point is such a seasoned veteran.
“It’s going to be really tough to get him off his game, to get him off his focus to the point where it’ll affect him negatively.
“Don’t poke the bear. It seems like it. It was funny that exchange with the handshake and the fist,” Algieri added when asked if Canelo will make Saunders pay for his trash talk.
“I thought that was really indicative because it seemed like Billy Joe was going to fake it, and Canelo beat him to it. He’s like, ‘Uh ah.’
“I thought that was an interesting exchange between the two. It seems like Canelo is fed up.”

Canelo has not been beaten in any of his last 14 contests, the closest of which came in a draw with Gennady Golovkin in 2017.
Meanwhile, Saunders’ biggest victories have come against the likes of Andy Lee, David Lemieux and Chris Eubank Jr.
But he has never taken on someone with the pedigree of Canelo and as a result is the overwhelming underdog in the fight.

Items include a range of hats and caps at £18 each, hoodies up to £43 and even a £7 mug.
It follows Paul getting ‘gotcha hat’ and an image of a cap tattooed on his leg as a permanent reminder of the chaos that unfolded at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Jake’s older brother faced off with Mayweather ahead of their June 6 exhibition bout when the younger Paul shouted ‘you wanna make it two in one night’ to the 50-0 king.
As he made his way over to confront the YouTuber, fired-up Mayweather said: “Yes.”
Drama then ensued when Jake stole Mayweather’s hat – with the pair eventually separated by their entourages.
A member of Floyd’s team did catch Paul, 24, leaving him with a vicious black eye.
But rather than shy away from the incident, Paul sought to capitalise on the publicity.
As well as the inking and merchandise, he also changed his Twitter name to the his new favourite phrase.

After the fracas Mayweather was heard shouting: “When I catch you, motherf***er, I’ll kill you motherf***er! You crazy?!
“I don’t know who the f*** he thinks he’s playing with, but I don’t play no motherf***ing games!”
And after being dragged away, the furious boxer was then heard shouting: “I’ll kill that motherf***er.”
It comes as SunSport exclusively revealed Mayweather is considering a return to professional boxing – and in his sights are the younger Paul, a rematch with Conor McGregor and a dust-up with Billy Joe Saunders – if the Brit can overcome Canelo Alvarez tonight.
