Billy Joe Saunders faces long, painful and tricky route back after brutal Canelo loss and may quit after £5m pay day

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS faces a long and painful route back IF he decides to carry on boxing after Canelo shattered his face and dreams. The 31-year-old Brit put his WBO super-middleweight title, his 30-0 record and his fearless no-surrender reputation on the line against Mexico’s WBC and WBA king, in front of 73,126 Texas fans, on Saturday night.

He faces a long and painful route back if he decides to return
In flashes the southpaw out-jabbed the planet’s pound-for-pound No1 fighter but, just as his trainer predicted, Canelo stepped on the gas in the second half and caved in Saunders’ right cheekbone with a skull-shattering uppercut in round eight.
The 2008 Olympian made it back to his corner but told trainer Mark Tibbs that he could not see from the damaged eye, so the experienced cornerman pulled him out, with Saunders glued to his stool, a white towel of surrender draped symbolically over his head.
Four-weight king Canelo is usually an ice cool customer but Saunders’ pathetic treatment of a few Spanish-speaking journalists in the fight-week hotel bubble infuriated him and made him lazer-focused on a violent finish.
And those tasteless insults were not the only ones to come back and haunt him as the internet lit up with barbs the Englishman had dished out to 23-year-old Daniel Dubois after he boxed on for six rounds with an identical injury, before taking the knee and being counted out by Joe Joyce in November.
    TRASH TALK BACKFIRES
Saunders, who told Canelo on Wednesday that he had never boxed a man with as big a heart as his, had said: “Everyone has their own thought process in the ring and what went on in the ring I don’t know. He obviously felt he could not continue.
“You look at the greats, the eyes, the face, we get through that. That’s the path in life we choose for a living. We punch people in the face and get punched in the face.
“If my two eye sockets were broken, my jaw was broken, my teeth were out, my nose was smashed, my brain was beaten, I was not stopping until I was knocked out or worse.
“I don’t agree with a man taking the knee and letting the ref count him out.”
Joe Saunders teased Daniel Dubois for not carrying on against Joe Joyce when he suffered a similar injury
BJS was taken immediately to hospital after throwing in the towel
Saunders face took a poundingCredit: Getty
Because of the heartlessness of Saunders’ comments, he will find sympathy especially hard to comeby, if he decides to rebuild.
And, as a super-elusive southpaw without major broadcaster or fan backing – or a world title to dangle – few fighters will want to face him.
Dubois’ June return will end a six-month recovery and that sort of enforced break – and the £5million career-high cheque he undoubtedly earned – could spell big trouble for an ill-disciplined fighter prone to blowing up in weight between bouts.
    HEARN QUIT HINT
And promoter Eddie Hearn admitted we may have seen the last of the incorrigible menace now he has hit such a financial high and sporting low.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Matchroom boss said: “He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time.
“But he’s a world class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. Billy a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. But he may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all.”
Canelo claimed that Saunders’ shameful rap sheet outside of boxing meant 90 per cent of the UK was in the Guadalajara gunslinger’s corner.
And, after the masterclass in head movement and uppercutting, he may have even bolstered his British fanbase further.
Thankfully his growing army of fans will not have to wait long as he aims to become the undisputed 12st king as early as September.

The golf-loving banger’s last three wins have all come inside 140 days and his dream scenario would be a mid-September shot at Caleb Plant’s IBF strap, the final belt missing from his collection, around Mexican Independence Day on the 15th.
And the American leftie got a chilling warning after the grinning assassin smashed a hole in the face of the man billed as his biggest test since Floyd Mayweather bamboozled him in 2013, for his only loss in 59.
“That’s the plan,” he smiled when Plant’s name was put to him. “That’s the plan to go for the belt. I’m coming, man. I’m coming, my friend!”

Watch the brutal Canelo Alvarez uppercut in slow motion that broke Billy Joe Saunders’ eye socket and forced him to quit

THE Canelo Alverez uppercut that broke Billy Joe Saunders’ eye socket looks even more devastating in slow motion.Mexican Canelo ripped the WBO super-middleweight world title away from his British rival in brutal fashion.

The pair had locked horns for seven rounds with underdog Saunders more than holding his own.
But after foolishly taunting his opponent, Saunders was made to pay.
In trademark fashion, Canelo pounced when his moment came in the eighth round.
Saunders attempted a big right hook but Alvarez managed to evade the swing in expert fashion.
And with the Hertfordshire fighter exposed and vulnerable, Canelo unleashed an utterly savage right uppercut.
Saunders managed to stay on his feet but was clearly hurt after cracking his orbital bone.
He battled through until the end of the round – but that proved the end.
‘Superb’ could not carry on and quit before the ninth, instead heading to hospital to get checked over.

And the damage looks set to rule Saunders out for a lengthy period.
Speaking to iFL TV, Eddie Hearn said: “You could see as soon as he [Canelo] hit him [Saunders] that he’d done his eye socket.
“I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation. I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.
“He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time.
    “But he’s a world-class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.

“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100 per cent.”
Saunders was hoping to go 31-0 in his pro career, with one superfan already getting a huge tattoo of the ‘win’ across his back before his hero stepped into the ring.
But Canelo had other ideas and claimed his 15th world title by the age of 30.
The consolation for Saunders after his first career defeat as his injury heals will be the £3.5million he is expected to pick up.

    SILLY BILLY
Saunders tried to taunt Canelo with the ‘Tyson Fury tongue’ before being smashed up and sent to hospital.
The British super-middleweight took a leaf out of his close pal’s textbook by sticking out his tongue during his title fight.

    IN THE EU-BANK
Chris Eubank Jr landed a huge cash windfall after betting on Canelo Alvarez to stop Billy Joe Saunders – then called out the unified champ.
The British middleweight star stuck £10,000 on the Mexican to win the fight before it went the full 12 rounds.
And with odds of evens, he doubled his money when Saunders quit from his stool after the eighth.
In a video of him watching the moment BJS quit, Eubank Jr was in hysterics and called his fellow Brit a “wet bag”.
Now a charity of his choice is on course for a bumper donation with Eubank promising to give the winnings away to a good cause.
    ANOTHER LOSS
Derek Chisora’s dreadful week went from bad to worse last night as he lost £8,500 after Billy Joe Saunders was beaten by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The British heavyweight suffered a second successive defeat eight days ago when he was on the wrong end of a split decision against Joseph Parker.
But Chisora was hoping his fortunes would change yesterday when he backed Saunders to cause a huge upset by beating Alvarez.
Earlier this week, Del Boy showed off a 10,000 euro bet he had placed on Saunders.
It showed the potential winnings as 62,000 euros.
Yet it wasn’t to be as Canelo fractured Saunders’ orbital socket with an uppercut in the eighth round which lead to the Brit’s trainer Mark Tibbs throwing in the towel before the start of the ninth.

    TAKING THE MAC
Conor McGregor appears to have mocked Billy Joe Saunders after the British boxer’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the eighth round of his fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The former WBO super-middleweight champion suffered a fractured orbital socket following an uppercut from Canelo, an injury which saw his right eye completely close up.
And Saunders’ trainer Mark Tibbs decided to pull him out of the fight as a result, much to the disappointment of many boxing fans who had seen a thrilling fight up to that point.
UFC star McGregor had little sympathy – seemingly mocking Saunders with a picture of fellow MMA rival Nate Diaz.
The image was a bloodied shot of Diaz from UFC 202 when he and McGregor went to war for a second time.
Diaz’s right eye was almost entirely closed but he fought on for the five rounds, only to lose to the Irishman on the scorecards.

    CANELO’S 15 BELTS
Canelo has now won a remarkable 15 world championship belts during his illustrious career.
The 30-year-old is a four-weight world champion and needs just the IBF belt – held by Caleb Plant – to complete his super-middleweight collection.

    PLANTING THE SEEDS?
What’s next for Canelo after his victory against Saunders?
The only super middleweight belt he needs to complete his collection is the IBF one held by Caleb Plant.
The 28-year-old is undefeated in his 21 fights and has successfully defended his belt three times since winning it against Jose Uzcategui in 2019.
But is Plant up to the challenge?
Here is his reaction from last night…

    FURY PREDICTION
Tyson Fury’s pre-fight prediction was half right – there was a masterclass in Texas.
Except it was Canelo who delivered the masterclass as he reaffirmed his status as one of the greats of the modern era.
Here’s what Fury said before the fight…

    MORE CROWD SCRAPS
There was at least two fights in the crowd during the Canelo/Saunders bout.
What could they be possibly arguing about?
Do we need home and away sections for boxing matches now?
    Incredible…

    WHAT A MOMENT
Here’s that incredible uppercut from Canelo…

    FAN GETS TATTOO
A Billy Joe Saunders fan got a huge 31-0 back tattoo of the British boxer, anticipating he would defeat Canelo Alvarez.
The tattoo is of Saunders holding Canelo’s decapitated head.
Is it easy to change a tattoo?

    BUT DUBOIS SUPPORTS BILLY JOE
Despite Saunders’ comments last year, Dubois has backed his fellow Brit on Twitter.
You fought well @bjsaunders_ hope your eye heels up quickly and you can come back stronger champ 👊🏿— Daniel Dubois (@DynamiteDubois) May 9, 2021

    WORDS HAUNT SAUNDERS
Saunders has come under fire on Twitter after some comments he made about Daniel Dubois’ eye injury.
The British heavyweight suffered the nasty injury during his defeat to Joe Joyce last year.
This is what Saunders, who suffered a similar injury last night, had to say…

    SAUNDERS SOAKS IT UP
Before Canelo broke his face, Saunders seemed to enjoy every moment of the biggest fight of his career to date.
The Brit was seen dancing in front of the crowd as he began his ring walk.
It wasn’t meant to be for him on the night – will he get another chance?

    THE REAL FIGHT?
A brawl broke out during last night’s fight between Canelo and Saunders.
It’s unlikely any of these gents would stand a chance against world champ Canelo – or an injured Saunders, for that matter.

    KARMA?
A few fight fans believe the painful end to Billy Joe Saunders’ night was comeuppance for his woeful treatment of a Mexican reporter.
The live ESPN broadcast during fight week was ruined by Saunders’ childish ‘humour’.

    ONE MORE BELT
Canelo now just needs the 12st IBF belt to complete the set of the four major crowns.
Caleb Plant has the red strap but Canelo has not been denied at 168lbs yet…

    RING OF FIRE
Boxing bible Ring Magazine took a spiteful shot at Billy Joe Saunders last night.
The mag has now apologised and is trying to work out who posted the mean message…
Earlier this evening, the attached Tweet was posted and subsequently deleted from this account. We apologise wholeheartedly for this unprofessional and horrible take. BLACK AND BLUE
Tyson Fury will be disappointed with the defeat his friend Billy Joe Saunders suffered tonight.
And he was ringside in Dallas, Texas, with an eye injury of his own picked up sparring in his Las Vegas training camp.
Eddie Hearn claims the AJ undispited decider will be announced next week…
    CANEL-GO!
Demetrius Andrade gatecrashed Canelo’s post-fight victory press conference and demands a fight.
But the Mexican pound-for-pound king is not in the mood for games…

    GYPSY CODE
Heavyweight and friend Tom Little has defended Saunders’ decison to surrender with the eye injury he suffered.
Little believes his frllow Traveller will bounce back…

    PLANT THE SEED
IBF super-middlweight champion Caleb Plant has the one 12st belt missing from Canelo’s ever-expanding collection.
And the American looks ready to face the pound-for-pound superstar…

    SWEARING WARNING
Demetrious Andrade, the WBO middleweight champion, just gatecrashed Canelo’s press conference.
The tricky American southpaw asked the pound-for-pound king to fight him and got a spiteful x-rated reply…
Canelo just told Demetrius Andrade “get the f*ck out of here, man,” when Andrade asked Canelo to fight him at some point during Canelo’s post-fight press conference. Andrade & his father, Paul, were escorted out of the press conference.— Keith Idec (@Idecboxing) May 9, 2021

    EAGLE-EYED ED
Hearn says: “You could see as soon as Canelo hit him that his eye socket was caved in.
“Billy went back to Mark Tibbs and said that he could not see and they have pulled him out of the fight.
“Because he couldn’t see, the next round would have been a dangerous situation.”

    NOT THE RESPONCE I WANTED
Billy Joe Saunders went back to his corner after round eight with a nasty bruise around his eye.
Trainer Mark Tibbs asked him if he felt he continue and it seems Saunders said no…

    TRAINER OF THE YEAR
Canelo’s childhood trainer and mentor Eddy Reynoso knew his chsrge would get it done in the later rounds.
The Mexican mastermind was beaming with pride as his protege took another leap btoward becoming the undisputed champ.
    Reunoso said: “One more step!
“An honor and a pride to be Mexican, today it was shown that when it comes to support we put on the batteries!

Billy Joe Saunders out for ‘long, long time’ with horror eye injury and may RETIRE after Canelo loss, confirms Hearn

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS will be out for a ‘long, long time’ and could even RETIRE following his brutal defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, according to promoter Eddie Hearn. The Brit performed admirably for eight rounds against the pound-for-pound star, but was then hit with an uppercut which fractured his orbital socket and trainer Mark Tibbs threw in the towel before the start of the ninth.

Hearn has hinted that Saunders could retire following the defeatCredit: Getty
And while the loss was only Saunders’ first in 31 professional fights, Hearn feels he could well choose to hang up the gloves.
Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “You could see as soon as he [Canelo] hit him [Saunders] that he’d done his eye socket.
“I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation. I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.
“He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time.
“But he’s a world class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100%.”
Saunders’ eye injury resembles that of heavyweight Daniel Dubois who broke his orbital bone in defeat to Joe Joyce last November.
The 23-year-old has spent six months on the sidelines but will return on June 5 against Bogdan Dinu.
Saunders actually mocked Dubois after the heavyweight took a knee due to his injury – with the comments coming back to haunt him.

If Saunders does decide to continue, there are a number of intriguing fights he could be involved in.
A rematch with Chris Eubank Jr is one boxing fans have been wanting to see for several years ever since Saunders beat him by split decision in 2014.
The chances of that have only increased after his Brit rival called him a “wet bag” and mocked his defeat.
And then there are other mega-fights on the table against the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Callum Smith and Demetrius Andrade.
While Saunders impressed vs Canelo – he was losing on all three scorecards when the fight came to an end.

Watch Billy Joe Saunders taunt Canelo Alvarez with ‘Tyson Fury tongue’ sticking before being smashed up in fight

Saunders’ mate Tyson Fury used a similar tactic but backed it up by beating Deontay WilderCredit: The Sun

He wiggled his tongue at Canelo as he wobbled his body after an exchange in the middle of the ring.
Fury did something very similar in his first fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018 as he took control of the heavyweight showdown before recovering in the 12th to get a draw.
And then in the rematch 14 months later, the Gypsy King licked blood off Wilder’s neck before his stunning knockout win.
But unlike unbeaten Fury, Saunders could not back up his games because he was brutally destroyed by the Mexican champ who clearly didn’t find it funny.
Saunders more than held his own against the heavy favourite.
However, Canelo proved why he is the pound-for-pound king with a devastating uppercut that broke his opponent’s eye socket – and ensured there was no more taunting from the Hertfordshire fighter.
Saunders gave up at the end of the eighth round and his cockiness earlier on was made to look all the more foolish as he saw his WBO belt ripped away after his first career defeat.
Boxing fans piled in on him on social media.

Another replied to the video clip: “And then he got punched really hard in the face and then quit.”
A third added: “Probably should have paid more attention to the Tyson Fury technique instead of the taunt.”
    One commented: “This aged well.”
And a final user quoted Jamie Vardy and wrote: “Chat s*** get banged.”

But Chisora was hoping his fortunes would change yesterday when he backed Saunders to cause a huge upset by beating Alvarez.
Earlier this week, Del Boy showed off a 10,000 euro bet he had placed on Saunders.

Yet it wasn’t to be as Canelo fractured Saunders’ orbital socket with an uppercut in the eighth round which lead to the Brit’s trainer Mark Tibbs throwing in the towel before the start of the ninth.
The defeat was the first of Saunders’ career as he had gone into the clash with a perfect professional record of 30-0.
Meanwhile, Canelo extends his unbeaten run to 15 fights with the Mexican not having tasted defeat since he lost to Floyd Mayweather nearly eight years ago.

Canelo Alvarez’s incredible FIFTEEN belt haul revealed as P4P superstar adds another strap to growing list

CANELO ALVAREZ claimed an incredible FIFTEENTH world title belt after ripping his latest strap off Billy Joe Saunders. The Mexican pound-for-pound superstar, 30, wrestled the WBO super-middleweight crown away from the Brit in brutal fashion on Saturday night.

His trademark uppercut did the damage as Saunders pulled out from his stool after the eighth round and was rushed to hospital after fracturing his eye socket.
The unified champ was in the mood to celebrate as he added to his growing list of titles.
Canelo went into the Saunders showdown defending his WBA, WBC and The Ring super-middleweight crowns.
Alvarez won his first world title when he beat Brit Matthew Hatton in March 2011 to become WBC super-welterweight – aka light-middleweight – king.
After five successful defences he added the WBA and The Ring titles in April 2013 but lost them with defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr five months later.
In 2015, victory over Miguel Cotto saw Canelo bag the WBC and The Ring middleweight belts to become a two-weight champ, keeping hold of them when he crushed Amir Khan.
He dropped back down to collect the WBO light-middleweight title against Liam Smith in 2016 before jumping up to middleweight.
The 5ft 9ins star retained The Ring prize in the controversial draw against Gennady Golovkin and stole the Kazakhstani’s WBA and WBC belts in the rematch in 2018.

That win ensured he had reclaimed the WBC and The Ring middleweight crowns.
After that he stepped up to super-middleweight for a third weight division reign, taking the WBA belt off Rocky Fielding.
Canelo added the IBF middleweight against Daniel Jacobs then defeated Sergey Kovalev in 2019 to win the WBO light-heavyweight belt and a world title at a fourth weight.
Since then he has competed at super-middleweight, beating Callum Smith for the WBA, The Ring and WBC belts, retaining them against Avni Yildirim before the Saunders win.

The British underdog put on an impressive display against Canelo and was more than holding his own in the unification title bout before the Mexican’s devastating blow.
Canelo was already ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage and picked up at least £10.7million in prize money.
Chris Eubank Jr mocked Saunders after he pulled out and shared a video laughing at the ‘wet bag’.

And now Eubank is clearly eyeing a big step up by calling out the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring super-middleweight king to try and take his four belts away in one fell swoop.
Demetrius Andrade confronted the champ in his post-fight press conference as tensions rose in the X-rated exchange.
However, Canelo’s next fight is expected to be against Caleb Plant.
Plant holds the IBF super-middlweight crown and therefore the winner would become undisputed king.
The 56-1-2 Mexican said: “The plan is to go for the other belt [Plant owns], I’m coming. I hope so.”
He put on an impressive display against Canelo and was more than holding his own in the title bout.
