Billy Joe Saunders’ coach Tibbs stopped Canelo Alvarez fight as he had ‘too much love’ for Brit to send him back out

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS’ head coach Mark Tibbs has defended his stoppage of the Canelo Alvarez fight – insisting his ‘love’ for the Brit prevented him from sending him back into the fire.Tibbs threw in the towel after the eighth-round of the Hatfield hitman’s super-middleweight title unification fight with the pound-for-pound king last weekend.

Former WBO champ Saunders suffered a quadripod fracture to his right orbital bone courtesy of a vicious counter uppercut from Canelo and was left unable to see out of his lead eye.
Tibbs told iFL TV: “It’s never easy. It’s never easy in a moment like that.
“But his leading eye was damaged and I’ve got too much love for the man to send him out there or ask him to go out there.”
Saunders, 31, boxed well against the Mexican mauler before his fractured orbital put him in survival mode.
Tibbs said: “For me, he was starting to build momentum.
“He got that eye socket – it looks broke to me – and then obviously, you know, the game falls apart.”

He added: “For me, I would’ve rather kept it long. Long and slick and awkward. Long, slick and awkward, that’s what I wanted.
“But I guess Billy’s got a fighting heart. Listen, when someone is walking you down like that, you’ve got to stand at times.
“It come off, actually. He put a good left uppercut and right hook or a right uppercut and left hook, one of the two.
“But he done well. But he done well up until the point he got injured.”
Tibbs was furious with claims Saunders quit on his stool, telling Behind the Gloves: “His eye socket was caved in and he couldn’t see. I didn’t get the response from him so, you know.

“It’s frustrating, really, because I felt that he was growing into it. But I had to pull it.
“He never said, ‘No, that’s it,’ he left it to me.
“He took it well, but he was in pain. The eye socket was gone and he was in pain.”
Southpaw Saunders has undergone surgery on his orbital and is expected to be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, told iFL TV: “You could see as soon as he hit him that he’d done his eye socket.

“I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation.
“I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.
“He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time.
    “But he’s a world-class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him.
“He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100 per cent.”

Mike Tyson warns Jake Paul will get ‘beat up’ if he faces Floyd Mayweather and rules out bout against YouTuber brothers

MIKE TYSON warned Jake Paul will get ‘beat up’ if he faces Floyd Mayweather and ruled fighting the YouTuber or his brother Logan. All hell broke loose in Miami last week as Mayweather and Logan came face-to-face for the first time at a press conference to promote their June 6 exhibition.

But it was younger brother Jake, 24, who caused a mass melee after stealing the boxing legend’s hat.
Both the Pauls were then involved in a scuffle with Mayweather and his security entourage.
Mayweather, 44, was irate afterwards and could be heard screaming ‘I’ll kill that motherf***er’.
Tyson, 54, was asked by TMZ Sports if the Pauls had any chance of beating the boxing legend to which he said: “No. He’s gonna get beat up pretty bad.”
He was then quizzed on if he would ever fight Jake or Logan, and he replied: “No, I like those guys, man. No, I love those guys.”
Jake is 3-0 in his career and boxed on Tyson’s undercard in November, knocking out ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, 36, in two rounds.
Logan, 26, has had only one pro fight, losing to YouTube rival KSI, 27, in 2019 by split-decision.
His pay-per-view spectacle against Mayweather is only an exhibition and will not go on their records.

🥊 MAYWEATHER VS LOGAN PAUL: Where will the fight take place, what TV channel and live stream will it be on?

But he claimed the brawl, and threat against Jake’s life has now made the fight personal, as he denied the melee being staged.
He said: “I f***ing wish that wasn’t real. I wish that wasn’t staged.  That s*** is not funny, it’s not fun for anyone.
“That s*** just got personal by default. It was supposed to be like a cute little press conference, come together, get people excited for the fight.
“Now people are talking about killing people? What the f***. ”

Five opponents for Canelo Alvarez’s next fight including undisputed clash with Caleb Plant and KO king Artur Beterbiev

CANELO ALVAREZ once again showed why he is the pound-for-pound king after beating Billy Joe Saunders into submission. Brit Saunders had the fight closely contested on the scorecards until Canelo shattered his eye socket with an uppercut in round eight.

Trainer Mark Tibbs rightfully waved off the action to save his man from any more potentially career-threatening injuries.
As seems to always be the case with Canelo, the question has now shifted to what next for the Mexican superstar?
Here, SunSport looks at five names who the four-weight champion could potentially face next.
    Caleb Plant
Canelo picked up the WBO belt to add to his WBC and WBA unified collection.
He needs only Plant’s IBF strap to complete the lot and become undisputed champion.
Before beating Saunders, Canelo and promoter Eddie Hearn revealed an undisputed fight with 21-0 American Plant would be the target.
Afterwards, Alvarez confirmed his intentions, as he warned: “That’s the plan to go for the belt and, I’m coming, man. I’m coming, my friend.”
Canelo is a free agent, which could make talks with Plant, a PBC fighter, simpler, but Hearn also wants the unification on DAZN’s platform.

    Artur Beterbiev
Canelo moved up to light-heavyweight in 2019, where he knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO belt.
He later vacated it and admitted the 175lb division was out of his comfort zone, instead settling in at 168lb as super-middleweight boss.
But while tearing through the competition, another step up could be Canelo’s biggest challenge.
Beterbiev is currently 16-0, all by KO, and the WBC and IBF title holder.
The intriguing prospect of the Russian’s power and size against Canelo’s technical ability makes it one of boxing’s most interesting fights right now.

    Gennady Golovkin trilogy
Alvarez currently has bragging rights over his former middleweight rival, having won their 2018 rematch.
But many felt Golovkin was hard done by not to win their first, which was scored a draw, with the second fight a year on close again.
A trilogy bout has evaded fans, with Canelo instead focussing on winning belts up in weight.
He has recently opened the door to a third bout with GGG, but only at super-middleweight, which would need Golovkin to fight outside of middleweight for the first time ever.
It seems the series will stay on hold for now, at least until Canelo is satisfied in his quest for the undisputed crown.

    Demetrius Andrade
Andrade gatecrashed Canelo’s post-fight press conference and called out the boxing icon.
But Alvarez seemed less than impressed, as he said: “Hey, you are a horrible fighter man. You never won against a good fighter.
“You are a horrible fighter. Horrible fighter. Just pay day, pay day, you want pay day, I know that.”
Should Canelo be unable to land a bigger fight, 30-0 American Andrade is promoted by Hearn and has an unbeaten record to put on the line.
But he would have to move up to super-middle, leaving his WBO middleweight belt behind, and bringing nothing more to the table.

    Jermall Charlo
Charlo is the current WBC middleweight champ and has had plenty to say about Canelo in the past.
The American is also unbeaten in 31 fights, with 22 KO’s and does possess a fan-friendly style.
It would again involve Charlo having to move up in weight, but he has the size to do so successfully.
He called for a shot at Canelo, tweeting: “F*** the money, f*** fame, and f*** the networks.
“I’ll lose my title and got to 168 to make the fight happen now. Boxing needs this fight to happen.”

Watch as Billy Joe Saunders’ dad Tom is pushed by security after rushing to ring causing huge bust-up as Fury watches on

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS’ dad Tom was involved in a brawl with security after trying to get to the ring to see his stricken son.The Brit boxer was pulled out by his corner before the start of the ninth round against Canelo Alvarez with a horror eye injury.
Billy Joe Saunders’ dad Tom decided he needed to check on his son, so leapt over the barrier
Wild scene last night as Tom Saunders, concerned about his son Billy Joe Saunders as fight is stopped, attempts to make way to ring to check on him only to be aggressively pushed by security. Totally out of line from security, IMO #CaneloSaunders pic.twitter.com/4Uw2V18pyh— Mike Coppinger (@MikeCoppinger) May 9, 2021

Saunders, 31, couldn’t see out of his right eye following a devastating uppercut by Canelo.
He was taken to hospital where he could require surgery on a suspected broken orbital bone.
As the fight was waved off, dad Tom was watching on from outside of the ringside seat section.
But the worried parent decided he needed to check on his son, and leapt over the barrier.
Wearing a blue cap, Tom was then shoved forcibly backwards by a security guard, before others joined in to help Saunders Sr.
One person who decided to stay out of the brawl was Tyson Fury.
Wearing a Versace shirt the 6ft 9in 19st-plus WBC heavyweight champion of the world stayed behind the barrier and appeared to be begging for calm.
And judging by the fallout, Tom was right to be concerned for his son’s welfare.

Promoter Eddie Hearn fears the Hatfield boxer could be out for a ‘long, long time’ – and could even retire.
The loss was only Saunders’ first in 31 professional fights, and Hearn feels he could well choose to hang up the gloves.
Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “You could see as soon as he [Canelo] hit him [Saunders] that he’d done his eye socket.
“I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation. I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.
“He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time.
“But he’s a world class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100 per cent.”
As Canelo celebrated all hell broke loose outside the ring
Saunders’ eye injury resembles that of heavyweight Daniel Dubois who broke his orbital bone in defeat to Joe Joyce last November.
The 23-year-old has spent six months on the sidelines but will return on June 5 against Bogdan Dinu.
Saunders actually mocked Dubois after the heavyweight took a knee due to his injury – with the comments coming back to haunt him.
Fury, meanwhile, sent out a class message to his good pal Saunders as he flew out of Texas with brother and Love Island star Tommy.
The Gypsy King, who is waiting for the announcement of his undisputed heavyweight fight against Anthony Joshua, posted on social media: “We thank god for everything and everyone around us.
“After a great week in Texas with @bjsaunders_ we now keep on moving forward in this journey through life, “In God we trust”.
“People love to hate on others willing to chase there (sic) dreams, @bjsaunders_ tried to be great last night!
“It wasn’t his night but at least he had the bottle to follow his dreams & heart Red heart, he will always be my bro Smiling face with sunglasses we go back to 15/16, what a night to remember in #30years dallas.”

Carl Froch ACCEPTS Roy Jones Jr exhibition bout and warns 52-year-old icon he ‘better be ready’ amid beef over Calzaghe

CARL FROCH has ACCEPTED an exhibition fight with Roy Jones Jr – who is nine years his senior. Jones has been left furious with Froch, 43, who called the American ‘totally shot to bits’ by the time Joe Calzaghe beat him in 2008 aged 39.

The all-time great then challenged the British ex-world champion to prove his words in a fight.
Jones, 52, came out of retirement in November as he drew in an exhibtion with the returning Mike Tyson, 54.
Froch, who hung up the gloves in 2014, confirmed his interest in facing the iconic boxer but only in an exhibition.
He told SecondsOut: “Well, you never know do you?
“If we’ve got the same sort of format that he had with Mike Tyson, I’d be open to that. I really would.
“I wouldn’t get in there with a 12, three-minute fight against a current world champion, because it wouldn’t be right.
“I’d have to be stupid to think I could compete at that level, I retired for a reason.
“But eight, two-minute rounds against the right dance partner, to share the ring with a legend, an all-time great like Roy Jones Jr, just that would be amazing.”

Froch announced his retirement immediately after knocking out rival George Groves, 33, with 80,000 fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium.
He almost made a comeback two years later to face middleweight king Gennady Golovkin, 39, but talks broke down due to a weight disagreement.
Froch has since called out Calzaghe, 49, but never looked close to fighting again.
Instead, he has found success as a commentator and pundit, where he recently worked with Jones on DAZN.
But after Canelo Alvarez, 30, beat Billy Joe Saunders, 31, in Texas, Froch revealed RJJ gave him the cold shoulder.
And it could lead to his dream fantasy fight instead turning into one of the classic brawls fans were so used to seeing him in.
Froch said: “It depends if it’s beef, because I don’t want to get in there and start going mad like I want to knock him out.
“But he sounds angry, so if he’s going to try and knock me out he best be ready for one coming back.”

But it ended in heartbreak for Saunders, who was pulled out after round eight with a suspected broken eye socket.
There was no shame in the defeat and Fury, 32 – who was heading to Miami after training in Vegas – hailed his friend for trying to shock the world.
He posted on social media: “We thank god for everything and everyone around us, after a great week in Texas with @bjsaunders_ we now keep on moving forward in this journey through life, “In God we trust”.

“It wasn’t his night but at least he had the bottle to follow his dreams & heart Red heart, he will always be my bro Smiling face with sunglasses we go back to 15/16, what a night to remember in #30years dallas.”
With Saunders, 31, now set to take time out after his crushing loss to Canelo, Fury is up next with his unification with Joshua, 31, rumoured to be a done deal for August 14 in Saudi Arabia.
Promoter Eddie Hearn hinted the undisputed title decider could be announced this week before his show in Manchester.
Hearn told Boxing Social: “We thought about making some noise tonight but, I think because of the various broadcasters, it wouldn’t have gone down too well.

    ED-ING IN TO SURGERY
Billy Joe Saunders is undergoing surgery on his eye socket, according to Eddie Hearn.
The Brit had his orbital bone smashed by Canelo Alvarez overnight in his defeat to the Mexican.
And the Matchroom promoter updated fans on his current state.

    CAN-NOT COMPARE
British welterweight Ohara Davies has had his say on Billy Joe Saunders’ eye injury during his defeat to Canelo last night.
Saunders withdrew with a shattered eye socket and boxing fans were quick to compare it to other similar incidents.
Both Ebanie Bridges and Daniel Dubois sustained eye problems in recent fights but Davies reckons the quality of Saunders’ opponent means you can’t compare.
Some people are comparing Billy Joe’s injury to Daniel Dunois or to Ebanie Bridges eye, they both done very well to fight on despite their injuries, but surely having one Eye against Canelo Alvarez is Different than having one eye against Joe Joyce or Shannon Courtney— Ohara Davies (@OharaDavies) May 9, 2021

    EU GOTTA BE KIDDING!
Chris Eubank Junior pulled no punches after his old foe Billy Joe Saunders’ corner pulled him out of his fight against Canelo.
Eubank took to social media to hit out at the Brit and suggested he would not have ‘quit’ if he was in the same situation.

Canelo Alvarez continued on his path to greatness with his stoppage win over Billy Joe Saunders overnight.
Many had tipped the Brit to put a stop to the Mexican’s phenomenal run.
But after Canelo smashed his eye socket to pieces, Saunders’ corner decided to pull him out and the South American marched on.

    CLASS IS PERMANENT
Canelo Alvarez took time to taunt Billy Joe Saunders as he forced a stoppage in Dallas overnight.
The Mexican smashed up the Brit’s eye socket forcing his corner to throw in the towel.
And this snap as good as summed up the evening’s events.

    BUILDING BRIDGES
Ebanie Bridges has offered her support to Billy Joe Saunders having initially questioned the severity of his eye injury following his defeat to Canelo Alvarez.
The British star, 31, was forced to throw in the towel shortly before the ninth round against his superb Mexican opponent on Saturday following a brutal uppercut which fractured his eye socket.
The Blonde Bomber, 34, initially tweeted: “Don’t tell me he stopped cos of his eye……” But after receiving a backlash from boxing fans, Bridges took to Instagram to throw her support behind Saunders – who was rushed to hospital following his loss to Canelo and could even be forced to retire.
Bridges wrote: “I Defs wasn’t in there with canelo, but I was in a lot of pain and I couldn’t see for 3 rounds…
“I went to emergency after the fight as everyone suspected a break but luckily for me there was no breaks. At first I was like wtf why they stopping the fight cos it didn’t look that bad….
“But I do feel for @saundersbillyjoe I thought he was Defs in the fight, I’m sure he would of liked to continue, the corner did their job. It might not look as bad as mine looked on the outside but I’m sure it’s very serious.”

    TRASH TALK
Canelo was confronted by middleweight rival Demetrius Andrade in an X-rated altercation following the Mexican’s win over Saunders.
Andrade interrupted the presser by saying: “So when can we get something going on? Let’s make it happen. What’s up Canelo? Congratulations today though, good job baby, good job.
“I’m a big fan… but what’s up though? When can we make it happen? What you think?”
Canelo responded: “I know [you’re a fan]. Man, you fight with nobody. You are a champion but you fight with nobody. You won the belt with nobody.”
Andrade then questioned Canelo’s recent resume, before the American’s dad accused the Mexican of ‘avoiding’ his son.
This appeared to rile Alvarez who aggressively shouted: “Get the f**k out of here man. Please, get the f**k out of here. It’s my night.”
Andrade’s father then yelled: “Don’t you say to him to get out here. F**k you. Go ahead, come. Come. F**k you.”
And Andrade said: “Don’t swear at me. Don’t talk to my dad like that. I’ll f**k you up. I just asked you a simple question. What you gonna do? You tough? Watch your mouth bro. I congratulated you bro, watch your mouth.”
To which Alvarez said: “Hey, get the f**k out of here because I’m gonna f**k you up right now motherf**r. Hey, get the f**k out of here.
“Hey, you are a horrible fighter man. You never won against a good fighter. You are a horrible fighter. Horrible fighter. Just pay day, pay day, you want pay day, I know that.”
Andrade was then escorted from the room, but not before he could get the final word by saying: “Come beat me little b***h. When I see you, it’s on.”

    FURY LOVES TO DANCE

    CANELO WAS WINNING
DAZN have released the judges scorecards for the fight between Canelo and Saunders.
Canelo ended the contest with a brutal uppercut in the eighth round – but, according to the scorecards, he was winning the bout anyway.
    Here’s the proof…

    CANELO WANTS CALEB
Canelo has expressed his desire to face Caleb Plant in his next fight.
Plant currently holds the only title missing from the Mexican’s super-middleweight collection – the IBF belt.

    SAUNDERS QUOTES – REMINDER
Billy Joe Saunders was forced to quit his bout with Canelo last night after the Mexican damaged the Brit’s eye.
But before the fight, Saunders promised not to do that.
He said: “If my two eye sockets were broken, my jaw was broken, my teeth were out, my nose was smashed, my brain was beaten, I was not stopping until I was knocked out or worse.
“I don’t agree with a man taking the knee and letting the ref count him out.”
The 31-year-old can expected a grilling from journalists once he’s recovered.
    KARMA?
A few fight fans believe the painful end to Billy Joe Saunders’ night was comeuppance for his woeful treatment of a Mexican reporter.

The 30-year-old broke Saunders’ face to take the Brit’s WBO super-middleweight title and add it to his growing collection.

    TIME TO JOE
Saunders will be out for a ‘long, long time’ and could even RETIRE following his brutal defeat to Canelo, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
Speaking to iFL TV, Hearn said: “You could see as soon as he [Canelo] hit him [Saunders] that he’d done his eye socket.
We’ll back him 100%.”
    SILLY BILLY
Saunders tried to taunt Canelo with the ‘Tyson Fury tongue’ before being smashed up and sent to hospital.
The British super-middleweight took a leaf out of his close pal’s textbook by sticking out his tongue during his title fight.

    IN THE EU-BANK
Chris Eubank Jr landed a huge cash windfall after betting on Canelo Alvarez to stop Billy Joe Saunders – then called out the unified champ.
The British middleweight star stuck £10,000 on the Mexican to win the fight before it went the full 12 rounds.
And with odds of evens, he doubled his money when Saunders quit from his stool after the eighth.
In a video of him watching the moment BJS quit, Eubank Jr was in hysterics and called his fellow Brit a “wet bag”.
Now a charity of his choice is on course for a bumper donation with Eubank promising to give the winnings away to a good cause.
    ANOTHER LOSS
Derek Chisora’s dreadful week went from bad to worse last night as he lost £8,500 after Billy Joe Saunders was beaten by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The British heavyweight suffered a second successive defeat eight days ago when he was on the wrong end of a split decision against Joseph Parker.
But Chisora was hoping his fortunes would change yesterday when he backed Saunders to cause a huge upset by beating Alvarez.
Earlier this week, Del Boy showed off a 10,000 euro bet he had placed on Saunders.
It showed the potential winnings as 62,000 euros.
Yet it wasn’t to be as Canelo fractured Saunders’ orbital socket with an uppercut in the eighth round which lead to the Brit’s trainer Mark Tibbs throwing in the towel before the start of the ninth.

    TAKING THE MAC
Conor McGregor appears to have mocked Billy Joe Saunders after the British boxer’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the eighth round of his fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The former WBO super-middleweight champion suffered a fractured orbital socket following an uppercut from Canelo, an injury which saw his right eye completely close up.
And Saunders’ trainer Mark Tibbs decided to pull him out of the fight as a result, much to the disappointment of many boxing fans who had seen a thrilling fight up to that point.
UFC star McGregor had little sympathy – seemingly mocking Saunders with a picture of fellow MMA rival Nate Diaz.
The image was a bloodied shot of Diaz from UFC 202 when he and McGregor went to war for a second time.
Diaz’s right eye was almost entirely closed but he fought on for the five rounds, only to lose to the Irishman on the scorecards.

    CANELO’S 15 BELTS
Canelo has now won a remarkable 15 world championship belts during his illustrious career.
The 30-year-old is a four-weight world champion and needs just the IBF belt – held by Caleb Plant – to complete his super-middleweight collection.

The defeat was the first of Saunders’ 31-fight career, with Australian boxer Bridges appearing to question his decision to bow out of his fight with Canelo.
The Blonde Bomber, 34, tweeted: “Don’t tell me he stopped cos of his eye……”
Bridges herself was left with an horrendous amount of swelling around her eye following her points defeat to Brit star Shannon Courtenay last month.
At the time she tweeted: “Men have quit from less than that.”
But after receiving a backlash from boxing fans, Bridges took to Instagram to throw her support behind Saunders – who was rushed to hospital following his loss to Canelo and could even be forced to retire.
Bridges wrote: “I Defs wasn’t in there with canelo, but I was in a lot of pain and I couldn’t see for 3 rounds…
“I went to emergency after the fight as everyone suspected a break but luckily for me there was no breaks.
“At first I was like wtf why they stopping the fight cos it didn’t look that bad….

“But I do feel for @saundersbillyjoe I thought he was Defs in the fight, I’m sure he would of liked to continue, the corner did their job.
“It might not look as bad as mine looked on the outside but I’m sure it’s very serious.”
Bridges continued by suggesting she has no regrets over her initial tweet, saying it’s been great publicity for women’s boxing.
The Blonde Bomber added: “I’m pretty happy that women’s boxing is getting talked about during this fight!
    “It’s all traction and attention.”
Saunders’ eye injury drew eerie parallels to that of heavyweight Daniel Dubois who broke his orbital bone in defeat to Joe Joyce last November.
Dubois also came in for monster criticism as he waved the fight off on his knees – since sitting out the last six months preparing for his return against Bogdan Dinu on June 5.
Saunders was amongst those to lash out at Dubois – saying he’d rather DIE in the ring than give up.

But Saunders’ promoter Eddie Hearn has vowed to back his man despite knowing he’s in for a ‘long, long’ lay-off.
Hearn told iFL TV: “You could see as soon as he [Canelo] hit him [Saunders] that he’d done his eye socket.
“I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation. I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.

“But he’s a world class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all.
“We’ll back him 100 per cent.”
