Ben Askren surrounded himself with the ‘wrong people’ and bought into ‘hype’ ahead of brutal Jake Paul KO, says Ferguson

BEN ASKREN surrounded himself with the ‘wrong people’ ahead of his ill-fated clash with Jake Paul, according to UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson. The former Bellator and ONE Championship welterweight champion suffered a brutal first-round KO loss to the YouTuber in his professional boxing debut last month.

Askren, 36, briefly trained for the bout at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles with legendary coach Freddie Roach – who will be in Ferguson’s corner this weekend at UFC 262.
But Ferguson believes the Olympic wrestler didn’t properly immerse himself in the sweet science.
In an interview with The Schmo, he said of his meeting with Funky: “I’m gonna be real, it was cool.
“I told him he’s coachable and that he’s gonna have a good shot but he’s going to have to hit the bag.
“Boxing is no joke, man. You can go out there and learn the sport, but it’s an Olympic sport. People forget that.
“MMA is so young it hasn’t made it to that spot yet. When I started surrounding myself around boxers, that’s what you get. You get into that mentality. That structured mentality.

“Ben, he went over there and I could kinda see that he was [working] really hard and he was doing his thing.
“But he was surrounding himself with the wrong people and the vibe about too much of the hype.”
Despite believing Askren could’ve surrounded himself with a better team, Ferguson respects the Iowa native for stepping into the ring.
He continued: “Hats off to him to be going out there and to be able to do it because nobody else did it.
“I’m gonna be real: he put in the work and hopefully he got paid for that s**t, man.

“Next time, keep your hands up and your chin down.”
Askren was bitterly disappointed with the outcome of his maiden foray into the ring but insists the fight was by no means fixed.
He told ESPN: “That’s human nature [to question the fight] but it definitely didn’t happen, I got hit.
“I guess the question I have for people is what do I gain from it?
“I told you guys what I made for this fight, it was a very nice paycheque but I’m also not destitute and poor, so what do I gain by that? The answer is nothing.
“I think in fact I would lose a lot and it’s not something that would ever cross my mind.
“I said if they guy’s a good boxer then I’m going to lose. There was a fear he had around me and there was a feeling that maybe he wasn’t very good.
“In the locker room I was pretty confident I was going to win but… the result afterwards is irrelevant to me, my life is going to be the same either way.”

Floyd Mayweather ‘sues company for £85m’ over failed bid to fight YouTuber Logan Paul in Dubai

According to TMZ, the suit alleges PAC claimed to have the ‘the financial wherewithal and capability to host a fight of this magnitude’ as well as ‘numerous business contacts in Dubai’.
Additionally, Mayweather Promotions claims the company ‘presented financial projections estimating the fight could generate guaranteed amounts for each participant, plus result in the promoters earning more than $100million (£71m) in profits after covering all purses and expenses.’
Mayweather Promotions claimed to have signed a deal requiring PAC to pay a guaranteed £78m ($110m) on a ‘prescribed payment schedule’ after being impressed by their pitch.
The first payment of £21m ($30m), which was allegedly missed, was said to have been due on March 25.
According to Mayweather Promotions, that missed payment triggered a clause allowing them to terminate their agreement but still pocket the full £85m.
Despite PAC’s failure to come through on their alleged promises, Mayweather’s fight with Paul will go ahead.

🥊 MAYWEATHER VS LOGAN PAUL: Where will the fight take place, what TV channel and live stream will it be on?
The former four-weight world champion will face the YouTuber in an exhibition bout on June 6.
Mayweather’s second exhibition since his third retirement from the sport in 2017 will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The pair, 44 and 25 respectively, got their first glimpses of one another last week at their first pre-fight press conference.
But the presser descended into bedlam after Paul’s younger brother, Jake, stole Mayweather’s hat.
Mayweather responded by attacking Jake, an act that led to a wild melee ensuing.

As the dust began to settle, an irate Mayweather said: “When I catch you, motherf****r, I’ll kill you motherf****r! You crazy?!
“I don’t know who the f**k he thinks he’s playing with, but I don’t play no motherf***ing games!
    “I’ll f**k you up! I don’t play no motherf***ing games.”
After he was dragged away from the scene, the Money man shouted: “I’ll kill that motherf***er.”

Canelo Alvarez campaigning up at light-heavyweight would be ‘too much for him’ says former WBC champ Sergio Mora

CANELO ALVAREZ campaigning up at light-heavyweight would be ‘too much for him’, according to former WBC champion Sergio Mora. Canelo has only once fought as high as 175lb, when he beat Sergey Kovalev for the WBO belt in November 2019.

But he immediately vacated it to step down to super-middleweight, where he currently reigns as the unified king.
He is set to face Caleb Plant, 28, in September in an undisputed title decider, having just beaten Billy Joe Saunders, 31.
Running out of competition, a move back up to light-heavy, where hard-hitter Artur Beterbiev resides, has been mentioned by Eddie Hearn.
But DAZN commentator and former boxer Mora believes Beterbiev, 36, and Dmitry Bivol, 30, would be too hot to handle for the Mexican superstar.
He said: “It’s a game changer. Once you go north of 160, that’s what makes heavyweight boxing so exciting.
“The smaller weight division south of 147 is volume punching, is pressure. Now we’re dealing with the big boys.
“Zurdo Ramirez, he’s a southpaw, he’s a power puncher. Beterbiev, Bivol, that’s too much for him.
“Let him pick up this last belt at 168, the first ever to be the undisputed at the weight. That’s how you make a case to be the greatest Mexico ever produced.”

Canelo, 30, has ruled at light-middle, middleweight, super-middleweight as unified champion.
And Mora feels Alvarez is best suited at 168lb, where he can rely more on power punching rather than combinations against smaller opponents.
He explained: “He’s throwing less punches, that’s what you have to do when you start moving up in weight.
“At 160-plus these bigger men with bigger punches, they don’t rely on volume.
“They rely on accuracy, that power, they rely on trauma and force, and that is what Canleo is doing.
“With Callum Smith he beat him up against the ropes, a much bigger man, a much taller man.
“If it’s Saunders we saw what he did: he fractured his orbital bone.
“It’s blunt force he’s relying on, and you might be able to pick up a couple of rounds, but once Canelo comes forward, cutting you off, getting you against the ropes, blasting you with those forces, even if you’re blocking those shots, once one penetrates through, no.”

Eddie Hearn reveals Tyson Fury sends him ‘unpleasant’ messages ahead of undisputed fight against Anthony Joshua

EDDIE HEARN revealed he has been on the receiving end of some ‘unpleasant’ messages from Tyson Fury. Hearn has worked tirelessly to deliver the undisputed title decider between AJ and Fury, which is now set for August 14 in Saudi Arabia.

With an announcement imminent, both heavyweight champions have started the war of words.
Hearn has warned there will be a new side to Joshua, 31, ahead of the most important fight of his career, but already knows what to expect from Fury, 32.
He told Sky Sports: “You will get a different AJ in this build-up.
“He’s excited because he’s never really, apart from the Dillian Whyte fight, been in a trash-talk environment.
“He will enjoy it. AJ has got the bit between his teeth, goading him a bit.
“I’m sure these two DM each other, goading each other. I get DMs from Fury – sometimes pleasant, sometimes unpleasant.
“When the announcement comes and the press conferences start, the pleasantries will go away and it will become personal.
“It doesn’t matter who respects who. Both sides are desperate to win because this is everything. There are no fun and games. It’s ‘them and us’.”

For the first time in heavyweight history, all four WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts are set to be on the line.
To mark the historic fight – where bragging rights are on the line – Hearn promised an emphatic performance by unified champion Joshua.
He said: “AJ will go to war with Fury. He has plans to absolutely demolish him. That’s what I believe he will do.
“In the meantime we will go through the build-up, which will be a lot of fun, before the biggest event of 2021.”
Hearn has been locked in talks with Saudi Arabian backers, the same group who brought AJ’s 2019 rematch win over Andy Ruiz Jr, 31, to Diriyah.

That night, they built a custom-made 18,000 indoor stadium, only to take it down afterwards, and the same set-up is set to be produced for the biggest fight in British history.
Hearn said: “They want to build a new stadium. They have indoors options. In August at 11pm it will be about 23 degrees.
“They want to create something very, very special. Last time they built a stadium for the Andy Ruiz Jr fight in just seven weeks and it held 18,000.
“This will be a similar set-up. They have the opportunity to hold it indoors but they want to create something that will shock the world.
“They want to build a stadium just for this fight.”

Given the magnitude of the fight, there were fears the contest would be aired at a time catered for the North American market.
But according to Bad Left Hook, Joshua vs Fury will get underway between 11pm and midnight Saudi time – meaning the fight will start between 9pm and 10pm in the UK.
The news will be music to the ears of British boxing fans, who have had to endure the pain of the pair’s first meeting not taking place on these shores.
A venue for the multi-million-pound showdown has not yet been built, although promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed the Saudis plan to erect a stadium similar to the one created for Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.
In a hint at the start time, Joshua’s promoter told Sky Sports: “They want to build a new stadium. They have indoors options.
“In August at 11pm it will be about 23 degrees.

Fury’ co-promoter Bob Arum was sceptical about the fight taking place late last month and declared it ‘dead in the water’.
But the 89-year-old is now ‘optimistic’ the fight will happen, telling Bad Left Hook: “These deals are very, very complex.

Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua LIVE updates: Fight date CONFIRMED, Saudi Arabia to host, Fury trains in Miami – latest

ANTHONY JOSHUA and Tyson Fury are training for their HUGE heavyweight world title fight.Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn says the fight will be taking place on August 14 in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua’s WBA, IBF and WBO titles are on the line with Fury’s WBC championship in a massive unification showdown.
We’ll be bringing you ALL of the latest developments on the bout plus all of the news from the world of boxing right here…
    FURIOUS PREPARATIONS
What preparations could we see from Tyson Fury in the build-up to his bout against Anthony Joshua?

    McINTYRE VS FURY
Tyson Fury has already had a brief spell in the WWE, enjoying a feud with the Colossal Braun Strowman.
But the Gypsy King has also been exchanging words with top dog Drew McIntyre!
In an interview with Steven Muehlhausen of DAZN, the former WWE champion touched on the pair’s exchange on Twitter.
“He’s [Fury] cutting promos on me the other day from Vegas,” McIntyre said. It’s pretty surreal to me. When I turn on my Twitter, and he does respond.
“It’s been over a year now that we’ve been going back and forth with each other.
“It gets people talking. I know there’s going to be a day where we finally make something happen. It’s going to be big, and ideally, I think it’s going to be in the UK.”
    NEW PLAN FOR DAN
A potential future opponent for either Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua.
Daniel Dubois has split with trainer Mark Tibbs before their first fight together as he links up instead with Shane McGuigan.
The 23-year-old decided to leave Martin Bowers and partner up with Tibbs after his defeat to Joe Joyce in November.
But six months later – and with his comeback clash against Bogdan Dinu just three weeks away – The Mail have now reported that he has changed trainer once more.
It is thought that the split between Tibbs and Dubois occurred after the trainer informed the fighter he had other commitments.
Tibbs – who also coaches fellow heavyweight Dillian Whyte – was in the corner for Billy Joe Saunders’ defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last weekend.
Daniel Dubois has made the bold decision to change trainers twice in a matter of months

    NICK OF TIME
Tyson Fury trained with Nick Diaz and called for Dana White to ‘make the fight’ ahead of the UFC legend’s comeback.
Diaz has not fought since 2013, in a loss-turned no-contest against Anderson Silva, but the American veteran is preparing for a sensational return.
And in Miami he bumped into unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion Fury, 32, in camp himself to face Anthony Joshua, 31, on August 14.
UFC president White held a meeting with Diaz, 37, to discuss a comeback fight, and the Gypsy King warned the Stockton icon is in ‘tremendous shape’.
Fury said: “I’m here with my boy Nick, the bad man Diaz. What you saying Nick?
“We’re working hard, we’re coming for all you motherf***ers out there. You’re getting smashed to f***. You better believe it.
“Absolutely smashing it, he’s in tremendous shape, he’s ready. Make the fight Dana, make the fight.”

    GOOD MORNING BOXING FANS
Promoter Eddie Hearn believes Anthony Joshua will demolish Tyson Fury in their heavyweight showdown.
Tony Bellew has warned the Gypsy King his summer opponent Joshua is ‘training like an animal’.
Joshua is set to face Fury in a huge world heavyweight title unification in Saudi Arabia on August 14.
The date has been agreed but the contract signing still needs to be finalised over the next week.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is increasingly optimistic the fight will take place in August.
    MONEY MAYWEATHER
It may not be the huge super fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua but the hype is not slowing down ahead of Floyd Mayweather’s clash with YouTuber Logan Paul.
Sky Sports Box Office will be showing the fight on June 6 in Miami.
But no fixed UK price has yet been announced by Sky Sports.
The usual PPV price for Sky Sports boxing events is £19.99, although the last two Anthony Joshua fights have both been £24.99.
The likes of Badou Jack, Jean Jean Pascal and Jarrett Hurd will all feature on the undercard of the event.

    BULKING UP
One man with an eye on Anthony Joshua’s fight with Tyson Fury is Oleksandr Usyk.
And the undisputed cruiserweight king is bulking up in the gym in a bid to become the dominant force in the heavyweight division.

Usyk posed for a video of himself topless in the gym on social media before climbing on to the scales to reveal his weight as 105kg.
He then produced a bicep pose as a big grin appeared across his face before he sent out a menacing message to his new big boy rivals.
The 34-year-old said: “What’s up heavyweight? I’m here.”
    FIGHTING TALK
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has offered an optimistic view ahead of the world heavyweight fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
Arum recently raised doubts over the prospect of the British superstars colliding this summer.
But Arum is now positive the super fight will take place in August.
Arum told Bad Left Hook: “We sent (deal principals in Saudi Arabia) a memo, on behalf of the promotion, and they said it’s the holiday, the end of Ramadan, and nobody is in the office.

Talks between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury over their unification title fight are expected to enter crucial stages early next week.
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that both parties had agreed that the fight would take place in Saudi Arabia on August 14.
But there’s still things to sort out before contracts can be signed.
Hearn said: “Team Fury need to be comfortable.
“The word and feeling out of both camps should give you the security that this fight is happening and August 14 is the date.”

HEARN: JOSHUA PLANS TO ABSOLUTELY DEMOLISH FURY
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn – who also promotes IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua – believes that his guy will “demolish” Fury in the unification fight.
The date looks set for August 14 in Saudi Arabia, and the fight will be inside a purpose-built arena.
Hearn told Sky Sports: “You will get a different AJ in this build-up.
“He’s excited because he’s never really, apart from the Dillian Whyte fight, been in a trash-talk environment. He will enjoy it.
“AJ has got the bit between his teeth, goading him a bit. I’m sure these two DM each other, goading each other.

    BATTLE OF THE BRITS
The most highly anticipated fight of the year!

    TRAINING ‘LIKE AN ANIMAL’
Tony Bellew has warned Tyson Fury that rival Anthony Joshua is “training like an animal”.
Fury – the WBC and Ring Magazine heavyweight champion of the world – is currently training in America.
But hasn’t fought since February 2020.
Speaking to TalkSPORT Breakfast on Thursday, Bellew said: “These guys are training like animals, believe you me.
“I know AJ is for the absolute fact.
“AJ is the best athlete the heavyweight division has seen since Lennox Lewis, he is that good of an athlete. So he is 365 days of the year, in shape and in camp.”
    EAST COAST
Tyson Fury is in Miami, Florida at the moment alongside his brother Tommy.
Tommy is looking to fight Youtuber Jake Paul who has taken an interest in professional boxing and has a perfect record.
Tyson has previously encouraged people like Paul to get into the ring and said it “brings more eyes to our sport”.

    GOOD MORNING FIGHT FANS
Anthony Joshua will fight Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia on August 14.Eddie Hearn confirmed the date and location of the heavyweight unification showdown on Thursday.
The promoter insisted the stadium constructed for the fight will ‘shock the world’ after the Middle Eastern nation hosted AJ’s fight with Andy Ruiz Jr at a similar temporary venue.
Hearn told Sky Sports: “August is about 23 degrees at 11pm, but they want to create something very, very special.
“Last time they built the stadium for the Andy Ruiz fight in just seven weeks and that held 18,000 and this will be a similar setup.
“They have the opportunity to hold it indoors but they want to create something that’s going to just shock the world and they want to, if they can, build another stadium just for this fight.”
    FIGHT CLUB
Let’s take a look back over Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury’s opponents in the past few years, plus Deontay Wilder’s as well.
Who do you think has proven themselves against the baddest roster?

    FAN-DEMONIUM
Eddie Hearn has opened the door to fans attending Anthony Joshua’s fight with Tyson Fury.
Saudi Arabia will host the battle of the Brits in August in a specially-built stadium.
And Hearn told BBC Sport: “The Saudi plan is to allow international travellers.
“Pandemic permitting, I’d like to think by August you’d have the ability to travel to Saudi for this fight.
“They may have precautions in place, whether that’s vaccine related or testing – I’m sure all countries will adopt different policies worldwide. But their aim is to attract overseas travellers.”
    ‘THE DREAM’
Tyson Fury has been lapping up the sun in Miami after watching Billy Joe Saunders’ fight with Canelo Alvarez on the weekend.
It looks like a nice day on the other side of the Atlantic, as he poses with bro Tommy in the sea.

    HEAVYWEIGHTS
Here’s the Tale of the Tape for Joshua-Fury. An almighty match-up.

    PAUL THE OTHER ONE
Tony Bellew has warned boxing authorities to put a stop to Jake and Logan Paul’s fight careers – and claims neither would dare call him out.
The now-retired former WBC cruiserweight champion, 38, warned that the YouTubers ‘are stupid and putting their lives at risk’.
Speaking to BBC Headliners podcast, Bellew said: “The fact of the matter is these guys aren’t fighters and aren’t true boxers, they are someone who is having a go at a sport and competing a little bit.
“Now I’ve got no problem with that but they shouldn’t actually attach themselves and call themselves professional boxers or fighters in any kind of magnitude or substance because it’s wrong what they are doing to the sport by claiming they are these fighters.”
He added: “This is all good when they are making a few quid and everyone is making some money but understand that someone is going to get hurt doing this and then it’s going to come back on boxing.
“You need to take it seriously. Boxing is a professional, dangerous and brutal business – do not mess about and try to think this is showbusiness, cameras and lights and fun and games.”

    FEEL THE HEAT
Eddie Hearn has revealed the conditions Anthony Joshua will face Tyson Fury in during this summer’s showdown.
Saudi Arabia will build a unique stadium for the clash, just as they did for AJ’s fight with Andy Ruiz Jr.
    PUT YOUR BEST FROCH ON
Elsewhere in boxing, Carl Froch could be the latest big name to dust off his gloves and come out of retirement.
The British boxing legend revealed he is in talks to land an exhibition fight with 52-year-old Roy Jones Jr.
He told talkSPORT: “Listen, we’ve been approached by a company – I won’t say who it is yet.
“They’re trying to set up one of these fights like when Roy Jones fought Mike Tyson – actually classed as an exhibition contest.

Mike Tyson says boxers want to ‘kill’ Jake and Logan Paul for ‘getting the f***ing money’ and ‘talking all this s***’

MIKE TYSON said professional boxers want to ‘kill’ Jake and Logan Paul for ‘getting all the f***ing money’ and ‘talking all this s***’. The Paul brothers rose to superstardom on YouTube and have divided opinions since crossing over to boxing.

Jake, 24, boxed on the undercard of Tyson’s comeback fight in November and has been backed by the heavyweight legend ever since.
Iron Mike claimed there is jealousy among fighters towards the Pauls and admitted even he would feel envious of the attention they get.
Tyson, 54, said on his podcast: “These guys make boxing so awesome. The boxers, the real champions, they don’t have that many views.
“They’ll be happy if they have a million views. These guys are 80million views. I was like, ‘God damn, man. How do you do that?’
“That’s why everybody wants to kill them, because they see this little white guy, blonde hair, blue eyes, ‘getting all the f***ing money, talking all this s***.
“Everybody wants to kill them. I get envious when I see these guys, I’m like, ‘What the f*** are they doing?’
“That’s why you want to kick his ass because you get envious of them, it’s easy to hate these guys.”
Jake has three knockouts in as many fights since his debut in January 2020, most recently beating retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, 36.

Logan, 26, has boxed twice before, both against online rival KSI, the first a 2018 white collar bout which ended in a draw.
They turned pro a year later for the rematch, which KSI won by scrappy split-decision.
But despite his losing record, Logan’s pulling power is so great he landed an exhibition against Floyd Mayweather, 44, on June 6 in Miami.
Mayweather retired officially in 2017 after beating Conor McGregor, 32, but Tyson insisted there is a reason he is so eager to fight a social media star.
He said: “Listen, Floyd’s a better fighter than all of those guys right now.
“Floyd right now, even though he’s 40-something, he’s still better than all the fighters now and he’s still fighting a YouTuber.
“And making more money than the champions are making.”

Jake Paul was surprised Floyd Mayweather got ‘that mad over a hat’ and claims NONE of legend’s punches in brawl landed

JAKE PAUL admitted he was surprised Floyd Mayweather got ‘that mad over a hat’ and claimed NONE of the legend’s punches in their brawl landed. Mayweather faces Jake’s older brother Logan in an exhibition bout on June 6 in Miami.

But all hell broke loose in pre-fight press conference as the Paul brothers were involved in an ugly melee.
It started after Jake, 24, confronted Mayweather, 44, and stole his hat, which sparked the ugly scenes.
Logan, 26, was forced to intervene as Mayweather charged at his brother, while Jake claimed a security member punched him in the face.
The YouTuber opened up about the incident with ex-UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen, and insisted he was never hit by the American great.
Paul said: “It was sort of a sensory overload with everything that was going on.
“There was, like, eight guys around me all grabbing me, some hitting me in the leg. I’m holding on to his hat for dear life.
“I was like, ‘No! I’m not letting go!’ And that was the main thing that they were concerned about it, like, ‘Give us the f***ing hat, give us the hat!’
“And I was like, ‘No! Noooo!’ Then they finally got the hat and then I see this angry Floyd Mayweather, I couldn’t believe it.

“One of his security guards had my shirt wrapped around his hand so I couldn’t get away, and he just comes running at me and he’s throwing punches over the security guard.
“I’m literally like, ‘Oh wow, this is crazy,’ but the funny thing about it was none of the punches were even coming close to me at that point and he actually punched his own security guard in the side of the head.
“Absurd moment, hilarious. I didn’t think he was gonna get that mad over a hat.”
Paul, who is 3-0 in his boxing career, has opened the door to fighting Mayweather after Logan, but has demanded it be a pro contest.

But Jake admitted stealing the hat was all part of a masterplan to garner attention and rile up his brother’s opponent.
He said: “Look, it’s show business. I didn’t think it was gonna go that viral.
“I thought it was gonna be like, ‘This is funny. Jake Paul’s an amateur little kid,’ which by the way, that’s what I was going for.
“I was like, this is going to be hilarious, I’m going to be like a little kid stealing someone’s hat on the playground.”
