Inside Logan Paul’s training camp in Puerto Rico from sparring world champion to mimicking Floyd Mayweather’s style

LOGAN PAUL has been preparing to shock the world with the help of a world champion and Floyd Mayweather replicas in sunny Puerto Rico. The YouTuber faces boxing legend Mayweather in Miami on Sunday, but he set up his training base 1,000 miles away on the Caribbean island.

And SunSport has taken an exclusive look into his camp and can reveal how Paul’s gearing up for what most consider mission impossible.
After leaving Los Angeles, his head coach Milton Lacroix called upon some old friends to help out with sparring, including boxers at the Team La Perla gym in San Juan.
One of those was amateur Lucas Ruiz, who helped mimic Mayweather’s famously elusive style and was left impressed after the spar.
Ruiz, 24, said: “It was great work actually. I thought he was really just a YouTuber, but he can actually fight.
“He’s a great athlete, he’s got good endurance and to me, if he keeps boxing he can really become somebody.
“He had a good flow and he was letting his hands go and you can tell Milton is getting him right.”
Ruiz’s coach Gabriel Lamastus oversaw the sparring sessions, and was less eager to get carried away with what he witnessed from Paul.
Lamastus revealed: “I would describe him as complicated, he’s a complicated fighter, but I wouldn’t say he’s a good fighter or a great fighter, just complicated.

“He can bring some trouble to somebody who doesn’t have that much experience, but definitely he’s not bringing any challenge to Mayweather.
“That’s not even a question. Logan has a very basic style, he throws the jab, throws his jab, and try to put his right hand in there.
“His defence is pretty good, he’s elusive, he can move his head and his reflexes are good.
“He gets out the way of punches not really by blocking or catching the punches but mostly by evasion.
“He fights with his hands down and depends on his reflexes to get out of the punches, which is a good style if it works for you.
“I won’t say he’s a bad fighter either. He’s 0-1, for being 0-1, he’s OK. But you can never compare him to Mayweather or any of the greats.
“He has to go through a lot to really be considered a good fighter. You can’t be a good fighter just because you have a bunch of followers.

“I do agree he should be given the respect, because he trains and I respect the guy, I have nothing bad to say about the guy.
“But I’m talking technical stuff. And Mayweather is a hard challenge. If you put Logan in an easier fight, I’m sure he could get some wins.”
Logan is as inexperienced as they come in the ring, boxing only TWICE before, both against online rival KSI.
The first, a white collar bout in 2018, ended in a draw before they turned pro a year later, which Paul lost by a scrappy split-decision.
But the two years since have seen him working non-stop to hone his craft, leaving WBA ‘Regular’ champion Jean Pascal pleasantly surprised.
Pascal, 38, sparred Paul in Puerto Rico and pointed to the physical advantages he will have over Mayweather.
He explained: “That was good sparring and honestly what people don’t know, they think Logan Paul is just a YouTuber, but Logan Paul has got some skills.
Light-heavyweight champion Jean Pascal with Logan Paul
Jean Pascal has been sparring with Logan Paul
“He’s got some natural boxing skills, he’s athletic, he’s a big guy. Floyd is 147 pounds, Logan Paul is probably 200 pounds.
“For the fight he has to be 190, but Floyd’s probably going to be 150-160 so that’s a huge gap, maybe that gap might make a difference.
“Of course, he’s going to fight the best boxer ever, so it’s going to be really hard to touch Floyd, but if he can connect – anything can happen.
“That’s the beauty of our sport, one punch, a fraction of a second can change the fight.”
But coach Lamastus is certain no matter how big Paul is, nothing will ever bridge the gap in terms of skill and class in the ring with Mayweather.
He said: “I will say the size advantage is not really a factor for Floyd. The reality is Floyd is just too good, he can get in and out.
“Lukas is by no means Mayweather, but he has a Philly Shell, elusive style and he was able to get in and out pretty good and not let Logan hit him.
“They say styles make fights and I will say this fight sucks for Logan. I will say it’s a very complicated, hard night for Logan.”

In the Insta story, the 31-year-old opens a luxurious box to show his followers the watch.

The watch is a collaboration between designer brand Audemars Piguet and Marvel to celebrate the franchise’s 2018 superhero movie.
Marvel are believed to be interested in creating a whole range of watches with Audemars Piguet.
According to GQ, the watch is worth around £118,000 – with a special version sold for $5.2MILLION at a charity auction.

AJ is hoping to beat Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury in his next two fights to become the undisputed heavyweight world championCredit: https://www.instagram.com/anthonyjoshua/
The heavyweight star faces the biggest 12 months of his career as he looks to become the undisputed world champion.
Joshua was hoping to beat WBC champ Tyson Fury in August and complete the job.
But that bout has been delayed until later in the year at the earliest as Fury has been ordered to fight Deontay Wilder for a third time.
As a result of that order, AJ will now need to fight Oleksandr Usyk if he is to hold on to his WBO crown.
If Joshua and Fury can win their respective fights, then boxing fans may finally see the two British heavyweights clash.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has increased tensions between the two fighters by claiming Fury ‘never wanted’ to face AJ in the ring.
He said: “I think it was pretty intentional. AJ felt that Fury never wanted to fight.
“I don’t particularly trust people on that side. Some people couldn’t let that fight happen. They wanted to keep some kind of control.
“When they say, they might want [the fight] in December, who knows?”
Both Joshua and Fury are known for loving the finer things in life, such as jewellery, cars and clothes.

And American Wilder reckons The Gypsy King tried to get out of his contractual obligation to face him because he’s afraid of losing their third showdown.
The Olympian told 78SPORTSTV: “Of course, I look at it as a coward way of trying to avoid me.
“For what reason? We know the reason and he knows the reason.
“I’m ready to get this title back. We were contractually obligated to have a fight.
“He gave his word. When you do all that – and we have the proof – you’ve got to abide by that.

Wilder and Fury, 35 and 32 respectively, are set to renew their rivalry on July 24 at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
Alabama bruiser Wilder is relishing the opportunity to settle the score with Fury, who ended his five-year reign as WBC champ last February.
He said: “Now that we have an ETA and location of where we’re about to go, it makes training much more intensified. Now it means something. It’s for certain now.”
“There’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. You’ve got to go through me.

Wilder has enlisted the help of former foe Malik Scott for his third clash with the former unified heavyweight champion.
And Scott is brimming with confidence ahead of the pair’s latest meeting.
He told 78SPORTSTV: “We built a facility to do a licensed homicide. Deontay Wilder is not playing. He built a facility to get this job done.
“When he wakes up and rolls out of bed it’s right to work. Everything we’re doing he’s right to work.”
He later added: “I’ve never seen it before from him like this at this level.
“I’m proud of him already for what we’re about to get done.”

My dad Muhammad Ali loved watching himself on TV…’weren’t I something’, he’d say to us

MUHAMMAD ALI spent his final days watching documentaries about his stellar boxing career, according to his daughter Hana. The boxing legend, born Cassius Clay Jr, died aged 74 in June 2016, 32 years after he went public with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

Speaking about her father five years on from his death, Hana, 44, told The Sun: “He loved watching himself on TV. ‘Weren’t I something’, he would say to us, his children.
“He would watch Elvis films on TV, and documentaries about James Brown and Little Richard, but mainly about himself, especially at the age he had Parkinson’s.
“You could see that light in his eyes. That spark. His eyes were dancing although his body wasn’t. He would look around the room smiling, it was so funny. No matter how bad his position was, he didn’t complain.
“He never questioned his illness, he never asked, ‘Why me?’
“He never felt sorry for himself, he felt a blessing in everything and said having Parkinson’s helps other people that are scared and frightened who are hiding away in their homes.
“Even in his illness he inspired people, his journey on this earth.
“He found a way to keep on going and life was all the blessings he had.”
She reveals he would beam at the TV and say ‘weren’t I something’Credit: Getty
During his 21-year career, Ali, who was married four times and had seven children, became known as the best boxer of all time – with 56 wins, including 37 knockouts.
    ‘OUR FUN-FILLED HOME’
He retired in 1981 following a final fight against Trevor Berbick in the Bahamas, where he lost on points.
Three years later in 1984, Ali revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Hana, whose mother was Ali’s third wife, Veronica Porché, said life at home with Ali was always filled with fun and that it was totally normal to have major celebrities dropping by for dinner.
Hana added: “Clint Eastwood was around a lot, Stevie Wonder, Cary Grant.
“Michael Jackson visited a few times. Prince would come later in the Nineties and we had dinner with Madonna a few times.
“Over the years, so many celebrities that you’ve heard of tried to meet my father and have been to our home. The list is endless. Everyone was a fan of my dad’s.”

Another close pal of Ali’s was Sylvester Stallone, 74, and Hana revealed the actor even filmed scenes for Rocky III at his home in LA.
Hana said: “I remember watching Stallone filming for Rocky III. They filmed different scenes. One was in my parents’ bedroom, one was on the patio, on the southern side.
“We had beautiful furniture – they used all our original furnishings in the scenes. They didn’t change it, they didn’t bring in any props.
Over the years, so many celebrities that you’ve heard of tried to meet my father and have been to our home. The list is endless. Hana
“The house was set up for the scenes as we lived in it.
“My dad was always entertaining the crew – he loved doing his magic tricks for them and they would laugh out loud. And my father would try to sit them down, to take a break so he could feed them.
“My dad and Stallone would have fun during breaks. He was like a big kid, he enjoyed being Muhammad Ali.”
Despite the A-listers that came through the door of their home, Hana said she and her father connected the most with Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, 85.
His family say they still feel his presence to this dayCredit: Getty
Recalling their meeting, Hana explained: “My dad and I hung out with the Dalai Lama in 2004. He was the only person I felt was a spiritual being like my dad.
“That was the only person I can say I was kind of excited about – not like the celebrities over the years who are admired for other reasons.
“Just because you make music or people know your name or you are famous – I wasn’t impressed by this because, as I was growing up, my father told me what was important and what wasn’t important in life.”
    ‘I FEEL HE’S STILL HERE’
Although it has been five years since Ali died of Parkinson’s-related complications, Hana said she feels her father’s presence to this day.
Multiple films and books have been dedicated to him, and Hana said these help keep his memory alive.
She said: “It’s like he’s here. Everywhere I turn there’s a poster of daddy, or he’s on TV. His energy is everywhere. I talk to his photo and say, ‘Daddy I love you! When it’s my time, I hope I can see you – come and get me’.
“He brought all his kids together from all the marriages and made sure we knew each other. This was a beautiful gift he gave us. Now we’re all good friends.

“Our father gave us so much joy. I feel he’s still here and still not gone.
“I knew from an early age he wasn’t just my dad, but we had to share him with the world. I’m OK with that.
“I stopped fearing death when he went to the other side.”
