      Floyd Mayweather backed to beat Logan Paul in six rounds by ex-sparring partner who also trained with YouTuber

      FLOYD MAYWEATHER has been backed to beat Logan Paul in six rounds by his ex-sparring partner, who also trained with the YouTuber.Daquan Mays spent Mayweather’s last two fights as one of the boxing legend’s trusted southpaw sparring partners.

      But Mays received a surprise phone call last month to travel to Puerto Rico where he shared some rounds with Paul.
      He gives the social media sensation enough knowhow and size to make it past the first half of the fight, but warned class will then take over on Sunday night in Miami.
      Mays, 28, told SunSport: “At the end of the day, you’ve got a small crafty guy, a genius, very experienced and then you’ve got a strong guy who is athletic and got his own ability too.
      “It’s definitely going to be a challenging fight. Logan being smart, it will definitely go past the third round.
      “But I’ll give it six rounds. Logan is doing 12 rounds right now in camp, so I think he’s in good shape and can probably take some good punches.”

      Mays was first recruited by Mayweather in 2017, for the final camp of his professional career before he beat ex-UFC champion Conor McGregor.
      When he returned a year later for an exhibition against featherweight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, again Mays’ style was sought.
      He watched as Mayweather, 44, took McGregor, 32, into the later rounds but wasted no time in blasting out Nasukawa in two minutes.

      And Mays believes Paul’s fate is firmly out of his control, instead depending on Mayweather’s mood.
      He explained: “I did a whole week of camp with Logan, just checking him out, they called me as they wanted smaller guys, who can give a Floyd look.
      “Me, myself I’m a businessman, so I was like I’ll go to Puerto Rico, I’ll check it out. I boxed with Logan.
      “He’s a smart guy, but boxing is different and you’ve got to consider that he’s boxing Floyd Mayweather.
      “It’s not something you can take lightly. Maybe Floyd won’t carry Logan. I don’t know.
      “It probably depends how Floyd’s feeling that night. Logan is a strong guy, he’s naturally athletic but I don’t feel his IQ is enough to last with Floyd.

      “Guys like Conor McGregor, he’s experienced in fighting, maybe not boxing but fighting in general, he was able to survive certain rounds for a period of time.
      “Guys like Logan, they’ve never been in a high-pressure fight, so it’s going to be pretty tough on Logan.”
      Mays has the unique experience of being the only person Mayweather sparred before returning to the ring in December 2018.
      And he opened up on how after only three sessions the American great re-found his form of old.
      Mays said: “I went to the gym, I say we did about eight rounds or something like that, he was cool but he wasn’t normal Floyd, he was kind of rusty.
      “Three sessions later he was sharp as s***, he was a whole different person, like a different human.
      “I was like, ‘What the f***?’ When you’ve been in the game so long it only takes a few sessions to get back. I guess it’s pretty much expected of him.”

      Mays, a keen painter, is 3-1 in his career and represented America as an amateur in World Series of Boxing.
      And he hopes to one day open up his own gym as a trainer and leave a legacy away from being just a sparring partner of Mayweather’s.
      Mays said: “I want to be a world class athlete, I want to be on top of the world and recognised for all my hard work.
      “I want to be a legend one day, more than just the guy who worked with Floyd but the guy who did more than just that.
      “When I’m done with this game I want to pass it on, I have so much knowledge. I’ve done so much work with Floyd, my amatuer fights.
      “I want to open my own gym and be a world-class trainer.”

      Hearn was left raging when plans for his man Anthony Joshua to fight Fury were scuppered by an arbitration ruling ordering a trilogy bout between Fury and Wilder.
      The Gypsy King is expected to take on the Bronze Bomber on July 24 with the WBC heavyweight belt back on the line.
      But Hearn has his suspicions over the whole situation which has left AJ set to fight Oleksandr Usyk in the summer.
      The promoter told talkSPORT: “We never forgot about the arbitration, we were just lied to by Bob Arum and by Team Fury.
      “We were told consistently by that side of the team – this arbitration will have absolutely no bearing on the AJ vs Fury fight.
      “Everybody signed a contract to move forward with this fight. They then refused to help [with the site deal], ‘Eddie Hearn won’t deliver this fight, he can’t deliver this deal, who’s gonna pay for this in the middle of a pandemic?’
      “So I went out with my travel bag all around the world and I signed an absolutely beautiful opportunity for Anthony Joshua – the opportunity of the Tyson Fury fight in Saudi Arabia.

      “Do I feel like I’ve let fight fans down? Yeah, you can blame it on me I suppose.

      Hearn hit out specifically at Top Rank boss Arum for his role in the negotiations – and explained how he confronted Fury’s American promoter.
      He added: “I actually called Bob Arum after the arbitration ruling, I said, ‘What on Earth has happened here?’

      “He said, ‘Oh you won’t believe it, I can’t believe it, it’s just ridiculous, but we’re gonna do this fight.’
      “I said, ‘What are you talking about? I’ve just worked for four months to make this fight, financially it’s an unbelievable opportunity for both guys, it’s the undisputed heavyweight world championship, go and do something about it.’
      “He said, ‘What can I do? Nothing.’
      “I said, ‘There’s always a deal, go and talk to Wilder, talk about step-aside.’
      “He said, ‘Oh, he won’t step aside.’ I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”
      Hearn is not the only promoter furious the AJ-Fury fight collapsed.
      Fury’s British rep Frank Warren vented at John Fury, Tyson’s dad, for the way events unfolded.

      John quickly blamed the ‘leeches’ surrounding his son for the fight breaking down, including promoters Warren and Arum.
      But Warren lashed out at Fury Snr for his comments, saying the clash with Joshua, 31, was called off purely to prevent Tyson being sued for ‘millions’ of pounds for breach of contract.
      On the AJ fight collapsing, Warren told iFL TV: “I don’t accept any blame at all.
      “So don’t come dumping anything on my doorstep.
      “Everyone’s frustrated, but I’m sick to death of talking about the same bulls*** all the time.
      “[In future] just keep your mouth shut until something is signed.
      “With a fight of this magnitude, until it’s signed and all the obstacles are cleared, why make statements about it?”

      Speaking to Reuters via The Mirror, Tyson said: “Floyd is going to kill this guy, man.
      “Floyd stays in the gym, he’s never out of shape. He’s going to have so much fun winning this money.”
      The 44-year-old, who won world titles in six weight classes during his illustrious career, hasn’t lost a fight since the 1996 Olympics – and even that was a controversial defeat.
      But Paul, who lost his only professional fight to fellow YouTuber KSI in November 2019, is SIX inches taller than his opponent – and is likely to be much heavier as a result.

      And his brother Jake, who has also ventured from YouTube into boxing, believes the underdog has a chance.
      He told SunSport: “This is entertaining and I think that Floyd will again severely underestimate my brother, and there’s a size advantage, my brother’s fast and has knockout power.”
      Jean Pascal, who’s trained the Paul brothers, has also praised Logan’s boxing skills.
      He told SunSport: “Definitely he’s going to surprise people, honestly what people don’t know, they think Logan Paul is just a YouTuber, but Logan Paul has got some skills.”

      But Mayweather’s ex-sparring partner Ashley Theophane is having none of it and reckons the former champ will win ease.
      He told SunSport: “Floyd will win by knockout. It’s an exhibition but you have a YouTuber vs a legendary boxer.
      “Floyd will take Logan Paul out within four rounds then Jake Paul can get his turn.”
      The eagerly-anticipated fight will take place in Miami on Sunday, June 6 at 4am UK time.

      Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul has been CONFIRMED for Sunday, June 6 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
      The fight was supposed to be held on Saturday, February 20, but the bout was postponed.
      It was rumoured that the reason for the postponement was a lack of interest, however Logan Paul denied that that was the case.
      Claiming the decision was down to “business complications”, he said: “The Mayweather fight is pushed [back] which I am completely OK with.
      “The fight’s still happening [but] we want to have a packed arena somewhere and then the business side of things, we have to iron them out.
      “He’s got a lot of people on his team, [his advisor] Al Haymon got involved, if you know boxing, you know what that means for getting an actual deal done and figuring out a venue.
      “I need as much practice, training, sparring under my belt against this guy.
      “With every day that goes past I get better and he gets older.”

      He shared rounds with Jake, 24, before the 3-0 social media sensation beat former MMA star Ben Askren, 36, in April.
      And Pascal similarly helped out Logan, 26, in preparation for his pay-per-view exhibition bout with Floyd Mayweather, 44, this Sunday.
      Comparing the polarising brothers, Pascal told SunSport: “Logan is more natural, he’s a gifted athlete, a naturally-gifted athlete.
      “Jake Paul is more technical, he relies more on his technique, he has good technique.
      “It’s two different styles but both brothers are good.”
      Pascal, 38, was due to feature on Logan’s undercard in a rematch with Badou Jack, 37, but he subsequently failed a pre-fight drug test.
      He has protested his innocence and vowed to fight to clear his name, despite the damning results.

      Pascal has prepared for his last four fights in Puerto Rico, where he recently spent his camp with Paul.
      The internet star moved to the Caribbean Island in February from Los Angeles and Jake has been alongside him.
      Pascal has been left hailing the brothers and admitted he was shocked by their boxing ability and work rate.
      He said: “I was like a lot of people at the beginning, thinking these guys are just YouTubers, Jake and Logan.
      “But to be in camp with them, to see them training hard everyday, training like world-class boxers, I was surprised and very, very shocked.
      “They earned my respect because of that, I’ve seen them in the gym like every single day and they have love for our sport.
      “I think it’s good for boxing that these guys bring some eyeballs into the sport as more people are going to watch the fight because of them.”
      Logan has it all to against Mayweather, who famously retired 50-0, leaving the task in hand more akin to mission impossible.

      The viral vlogger has boxed only twice before, both against online rival KSI, the first of which a white collar bout in 2018 that ended in a draw.
      Logan was then beaten in the rematch by scrappy-split decision a year later, leaving him with a losing 0-1 official record.
      But he will take in a size and height advantage with Mayweather, about all he can boast about, as Pascal warned all it takes is one extraordinary shot.
      He said: “Definitely he’s going to surprise people, honestly what people don’t know, they think Logan Paul is just a YouTuber, but Logan Paul has got some skills.
      “He’s got some natural boxing skills, he’s athletic, he’s a big guy. Floyd is 147-pounds, Logan Paul is probably 200-pounds.
      “For the fight he has to be 190, but Floyd’s probably going to be 150-160 so that’s a huge gap, maybe that gap might make a difference.
      “Of course, he’s going to fight the best boxer ever, so it’s going to be really hard to touch Floyd, but if he can connect – anything can happen.
      “That’s the beauty of our sport, one punch, a fraction of a second can change the fight.”
