Conor McGregor ‘wouldn’t last a minute’ with ‘killer’ Oscar De La Hoya in boxing ring, says ex-UFC champ Henry Cejudo

The Irishman has flirted with a return to the ring before, and even once accepted a call out from De La Hoya, who is set to make his comeback.
McGregor lasted ten rounds against Mayweather, but even at the age of 48, ex-UFC champion Cejudo backed De La Hoya to get the job done in one.
He told EsNews: “Oscar would put him away. He’s a killer, and he’s not a Mayweather.
“He’s not a defensive guy. If he were to fight Conor in boxing, he wouldn’t last a minute, I swear to you. Left hook, jab.”
De La Hoya responded: “That would be interesting.
“After he made half a billion dollars, I think Conor is pretty good. I have always respected him.
“There is always respect amongst fighters Unless you have a beef with somebody.”

But now, he appears eager to get in on the action, as he predicted a second-round knockout against McGregor if they fought.
He said on the State of Combat podcast in May: “Two rounds. Because one thing about me, one thing about me, I went for the kill always.
“And look, Conor McGregor is – I love him in the Octagon. I respect him. I watch him all the time.
“But the boxing ring is a whole different story. It’s a whole different story.”
McGregor, 32, responded soon after: “I accept your challenge, Oscar de la Hoya.”
The former two-weight UFC champion went on to make his UFC return seven months later, losing to Dustin Poirier, 32, who he had beaten in 2014.
It has set them up for a trilogy decider on July 10 in Las Vegas, while De La Hoya fights for the first time in 13 years in September.

He was in talks with UFC legend Georges St-Pierre, but Dana White blocked the fight.
St-Pierre, 39, is under contract with the UFC despite his 2019 retirement and would need their permission to make the boxing switch.
GSP revealed an eight-round exhibition was proposed with some of the proceeds going to charity, before negotiations collapsed.
St-Pierre told MMA Joe: “It would’ve been bigger gloves, two-minute rounds, eight rounds.
“So the terms were different to accommodate, to make it more like a show. It’s less dangerous.
“Part of the profit, part of our purses would have been given to a charity. Unfortunately it did not happen, but it would have been fun.
“It’s a different form of entertainment, and with boxing you can tweak it like this — you can change the gloves — in MMA you can’t really do that.”

Oleksandr Usyk backed to permanently scupper Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury by pulling off shock win over AJ

OLEKSANDR USYK will permanently scupper boxing fans’ dreams of an undisputed heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, according to Michael Hunter. The former cruiserweight king is set to throw down with AJ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 25.

And Michael Hunter reckons The Cat will get the better of AJCredit: Matchroom Boxing
Usyk has yet to turn in a five-star performance since moving up to heavyweight, but Hunter reckons the Ukrainian will spring a huge upset against Joshua.
He told iFL TV: “I don’t think Anthony Joshua beats Usyk unless he knocks him out.
“This is heavyweight boxing, so there’s always going to be knockouts.
“He’s [Usyk] strong enough, and he’s an Olympian and all that. He has the accolades and attributes to do so.
“I just think Usyk is a little bit too fine-tuned for him [Joshua]. People are always going back on the Chisora fight because he didn’t look so good.
“But I think that was more of a ‘styles make fights’ type of thing. It’s in his favor to box somebody like Anthony Joshua, in my opinion.”

Hunter reckons Joshua will have to tag the elusive Cat with an unexpected heavy shot to retain his unified titles.
He added: “You have to hit Usyk with something very sneaky when you’re that tall and that dynamic with Usyk and Anthony.
“We know Anthony Joshua’s sneaky move is the uppercut, but that’s going to be a very rare punch to hit Usyk with.
“We know that Usyk is very defensive-minded, and he’s not there to engage. He’s there to get the points and win.
“So it’s going to be a very difficult feat and challenge for Anthony Joshua.
“It’s not going to be as easy as moving with [Kubrat] Pulev or Andy Ruiz in the second fight.
“He’s not going to have that advantage. So I think he [Joshua] should go for broke or something.
“They’re fighting, so there’s definitely a chance if they get in the ring. So we’ll see.”
Hunter’s view of Joshua’s latest title defence isn’t shared by WBC king Fury, who recently branded Usyk ‘a pumped-up cruiserweight.’

He told Seconds Out “I don’t believe Usyk is a heavyweight for one.
“I think he’s a pumped-up cruiserweight who struggles with heavyweights.
“In my opinion, Derek Chisora beat Oleksandr Usyk – he certainly struggled with Derek Chisora and Joshua is a much bigger, stronger man than Derek.
“I think he walks straight through Usyk, people are trying to build it up as a scary fight but he didn’t have the power to halt cruiserweights like Mairis Briedis or whoever else he fought.
“So he ain’t going to halt AJ, 260-pounds of pure muscle and 6ft 6in, how’s he going to keep him off?
“He couldn’t hurt Derek Chisora, hit him with his best shots on the chin and he didn’t hurt him, or at least it didn’t look like he’d hurt him.”

Silva told MMA Junkie: “I put (it) on the table many, many years ago that opportunity to show the world.

Jake Paul says brother Logan ‘did better than Conor McGregor’ against Floyd Mayweather as punch stats back up YouTuber

JAKE PAUL insisted his brother Logan ‘did better than Conor McGregor’ against Floyd Mayweather – with punch arguably stats to prove it. Mayweather officially retired as a professional in 2017, stopping ex-UFC champion McGregor in ten rounds.

He recently returned for an exhibition spectacle against YouTube star Logan, and to the surprise of many failed to score a knockout win.
Mayweather, 44, gave away TWO STONE, which proved decisive as it went the full eight round distance, meaning no winner was declared.
Logan, 26, claimed a moral victory by defining the odds to survive, and in the eyes of his younger brother Jake, bettered McGregor’s performance.
He said on an episode of the Impaulsive podcast: “Either way, you did better than Conor McGregor against Floyd Mayweather.”
Stats revealed Mayweather actually landed fewer jabs as well as power punches against Logan than he did with McGregor and was less accurate.
But offensively, McGregor, 32, was more accurate against Mayweather than Logan, throwing and landing more, but did have an extra two rounds.
Jake, 24, argued the final punch figures should be ignored regardless, believing his stats after knocking out ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, 37, were floored.
He said: “I saw a lot of people posting the stats. Like the side-by-side, punching stats, no, no, no, pause.

“It made you look like you didn’t do as good as people thought, right?
“But, in the Jake Paul vs Nate Robinson fight when they posted the side-by-side stats, the stats said that he hit me like eight times, and I only hit him like four times.
    “Bro, so f*** those f***ing stats. Whoever’s counting that s*** is a f***ing idiot.
“Nate Robinson didn’t hit me once, and I hit him dozens of times and knocked him down to the ground three times.
“So, how could I only have hit him four times?”

Tyson Fury predicts ‘most dangerous heavyweight in the world’ Deontay Wilder will KO Anthony Joshua ‘in the first round’

But at the last minute it was cancelled after Wilder was awarded the right to a trilogy bout with the Gypsy King.
Fury has refused to keep Joshua in his sights as a potential next opponent, believing he already has the toughest test in the division waiting for him.
He told Sky Sports: “I’ll deal with these guys later.
“The most important thing to me is Wilder, the most dangerous heavyweight in the world who would knock out Joshua in the first round.
“I’ve got to get past Wilder then those guys will get their five minutes of fame. I’ll give them the biggest beatdown they have had in their lives.”
Fury, 32, dethroned Wilder, 35, of the WBC crown in February 2020, following their draw two years prior.
They were contracted to an immediate rematch, but amid the coronavirus pandemic the trilogy was postponed and then cancelled.
Fury’s side later argued the stipulation expired as they instead entered talks with AJ, 31, for a monumental first-ever four-belt heavyweight unification.

Wilder, meanwhile took his case to arbitration and right at the last he emerged victorious in the legal proceedings.
It cancelled the Battle of Britain and set up a third fight between himself and Fury, set for July 10 in Las Vegas.
The wait for an undisputed heavyweight champion goes on, but Fury maintained the belts are meaningless to him anyway.
He said: “As I’ve told Eddie Hearn, the difference between me and them is they are businessmen and I’m a Spartan.
“This talk of undisputed means nothing to me. I’m not Eddie Hearn or Anthony Joshua. I fight because this is what I do – it’s what I was born to do.
“I’ve got nothing personal against Wilder. I don’t care about belts, or that stuff being remembered. I care about smashing people.
“If Wilder is in front of me I will give him a good hiding. The motivation? It’s what I was born to do.
“I’m not interested in money, belts or whatever comes with it. I’m interested in blood and the fight.”

Logan Paul vs Mike Tyson tale of the tape: How YouTuber star compares with boxing legend as pair talk over fight

LOGAN PAUL refuses to be told that fighting Mike Tyson is a step too far in his boxing career. The YouTuber claimed a moral victory recently by taking Floyd Mayweather the full eight round distance in their exhibition fight.

And it has given him the confidence to contemplate sharing the ring with one of boxing’s most feared punchers.
Paul said on his podcast: “My lawyer mentioned it and he was like, ‘No, Tyson will rip your head off, you don’t stand a chance’.
“I’m like bro, I literally just went through all of this, you can’t tell me I can’t beat Mike Tyson. Bro, he’s old, old.”
With Paul, 26, and Tyson, 54, at the centre of boxing exhibition spectacles, here SunSport details how the two compare.
    Mike Tyson
Iron Mike stunned the world last year when he announced plans to make a comeback, 15 years after retiring.
After completing a stunning body transformation, he returned to the ring against Roy Jones Jr, 52, in November over eight rounds.
Tyson was full of aggression throughout and landed some of his trademark left hooks to the head and body.
He was still able to show off sharp angle changes but his footwork was clearly not what it used to be, as he plodded around the ring.
Tyson was the stronger man against Jones but at times struggled with the speed coming back at him, something Paul would take confidence from.
He was also not effective in the clinch, as Paul was regularly tying Mayweather up when he was forced to survive.
Tyson’s return ended in a draw, but after such a long time out of action, the American icon promised to improve on his performance next time.
He said: “I felt really good, I felt confident. I felt that I could do it again… It’ll be better this time.”

    Logan Paul
Paul first boxed in a 2018 white collar bout with online rival KSI – which ended in a draw.
They controversially turned professional a year later, with little experience, and KSI emerged victorious by scrappy, split-decision.
Paul showed a degree of boxing know-how with a respectable jab and counter uppercut, but a two-point deduction for hitting and holding cost him the result.
In the two years since, he clearly improved after continuing to dedicate himself to training, but in reality is still a novice.

Mayweather failed to overcome the TWO STONE size advantage as he was unable to score what many predicted was a guaranteed KO.
Still, Paul displayed a good jab to keep the distance and even landed very rare shots on his legendary opponent.
Also impressively, he showed a good engine to fight until the end against one of the sport’s most gifted fighters.
It remains to be seen whether he could do the same against the likes of Tyson, who is heavier and more powerful than Mayweather.

Canelo Alvarez in talks for September 11 undisputed clash with Caleb Plant in Las Vegas, reveals promoter Eddie Hearn

It saw him add the WBO title to his WBA and WBC collection, with American Plant’s IBF version the final piece in the puzzle.
Per the Daily Star, Eddie Hearn said: “Hopefully we will have a Canelo Alvarez undisputed fight on September 11 on the platform.
“It is hard to say but it is almost like a tribute to that date.
“We’ve been talking to DAZN about a number of ideas for around the first responders and stuff like that.
“We’ve spoken to MGM and they feel like it is to be looked at as a tribute to that date – a date when we can incorporate a number of activities to give those people the respect they deserve.”
Canelo, 30, left promoters Golden Boy at the end of last year, which in turn terminated his 11-fight deal with DAZN.
But as a free agent, he has linked up with promoter Hearn and still featured on sports streaming service DAZN in his last three fights.
The last three, against Callum Smith, 31, Avni Yildirim, 29, and Saunders, 31, were all promoted by Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

But his short-term deal with them is now up, though Canelo wants to renew their partnership.
Having made the move as a free agent, the four-division champion is free to fight who he wants.
As a result, it means he could feature on Fox’s pay-per-view platform to face Plant, 28, who is signed to Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.
Hearn has maintained he expects both DAZN and PBC to make offers for the unifciation, but will work with Canelo on either network.

Tyson Fury urges close friend Billy Joe Saunders to return to boxing as retiring on defeat could ‘haunt him forever’

Mexican superstar Canelo caused the Brit to have FOUR fractures in his eye and cheekbone following a brutal uppercut in their fight in May.
Saunders revealed he is ’50-50′ on whether to hang up the gloves – but he has been told by the WBC heavyweight champion to fight on.
Fury said on SecondsOut: “I’ve told him that he should recover from his injuries, come back and win another world title. Don’t go out like that.
“He’s been in this game a long time and I believe that Billy Joe needs to fight again for his own inner spirit.
“He doesn’t do it for the money because he’s made a lot of money as well.
“He’ll never be broke, but it’s more than that. It’s about going out on the right causes.
“I think Billy Joe, if he doesn’t fight again, it’ll probably haunt him forever that he went out with a loss.
“An injury loss as well – it hurts more. If you get knocked out or smashed to bits in a fight then you know you weren’t good enough.

“But I believe he was in that fight and it was a close fight up until obviously he got his face smashed in.”
Saunders will leave his future in the sport down to his dad Tom.
He told talkSPORT: “At the end of the day, I’m 31 years old, if I don’t ever wanna work again, wanna sit back, wanna chill, I can do that.
“And so it should be, I’ve put a lot of time into boxing and I’ve paid my dues. The sport’s been very, very good to me…
“I’m 31, I haven’t took no punishment, I haven’t been battered from pillar to post, brain dead and can’t put a sentence together, so I need to sit back and look at my options.
“Because the options have to weigh up – the thought of me just coming in and fighting for a world rating or something, belts don’t feed the kids.

“Everything would have to stack up and [be] the right fight.
“Because coming down from fights like that, it’s very hard, where do you go from there. I’ll have a chat with my dad because he’ll have a big say in it.
“To be fair it will be more or less down to my dad in the conversation more than me if I’m honest.
“It’s one of them where it’s 50/50. Whether I think, I will have one more or a couple more, but they’ve gotta be the right sort of fights.
“If he says, ‘Leave it son, don’t go back for more,’ then that’s probably what I’ll do.”
