Tyson Fury still stays with pals in ‘Torquay’s roughest area’ after training there as kid as he prepares for Wilder bout

TYSON FURY never forgets his roots and still holidays with friends in the place where his boxing journey was only beginning. Fury lived in Torquay with his family for about six months in his early teens, and started boxing in the Torbay Amateur Boxing Club.

Tyson Fury pictured as an amateur boxing
It is situated in Hele Road, which Devon Live describe as ‘Torquay’s roughest area’.
Retired amateur coach Dave Stacey still remembers the first day future heavyweight champion Fury walked through the doors.
He told Devon Live: “I trained Tyson Fury when he first started. He was a traveller and he came in to us in Torquay when he was a teenager.
“This young boy turned up on his own one night and asked to train with us. He was a big lad, I’d say nearly six foot tall then.
“We didn’t turn away boys who wanted to train.
“Although he never boxed for us, he kept coming to train and spar for about six months, and then his family must have moved on.
“I didn’t remember much about him, because I treat everyone the same and there were lots of other boys to look after.”
Fury, 32, still spends time in Torbay on holiday and will never refuse taking a photo with his fans.

More than that, he offers local boxing hopefuls inspiration, having started out in the same gym as them, before becoming an unbeaten superstar.
Torbay ABC manager Mike Reardon said: “The kids in the club today all know about Tyson Fury and they really look up to him – knowing that he boxed here in Torquay as a kid really gives them an edge.
“He’s an inspiration for kids down here in Devon. We can feel cut off from everything in this part of the world.
“So it helps them believe that they can achieve anything. If Tyson can become world champion then they can.
“We still get travellers come to the club now when they are passing through.
“They come because of Tyson Fury and they tell us that he’s still in this area sometimes.
During one of Fury’s visits to south-coast, he was almost 28 STONE and out the ring for two years as he vacated his unified belts.
After dethroning heavyweight legend Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, the Gypsy King suffered from depression and substance abuse.

But only one year after ballooning up in weight and taking pictures with Torbay locals, Fury was on the comeback trail, shedding 10 STONE.
Even more remarkably, two years later the inspirational boxing hero recaptured the title to cap off his sensational turnaround.
After beating Deontay Wilder, 35, last February, the pair are now set for a trilogy bout on July 24 in Las Vegas.
But over 5,000 miles away, Fury’s story still resonates with inspired amateurs.
Torbay ABC head coach Darrell Asplen said: “The younger members still talk about Tyson Fury all the time.
“We use it as a stepping stone to inspire them. Just because you live in this part of the country doesn’t mean you can’t become a world champion.
“We are keeping a lot of kids off the streets who have nowhere else to go – the police even bring them in to us sometimes.
“Tyson Fury is brilliant – he’s so brave, even when he’s on the edge and one step away from losing everything.”

Anthony Joshua backed to KO Oleksandr Usyk in three rounds by sparring partner as power will be ‘too much’ for southpaw

ANTHONY JOSHUA has been backed by a sparring partner to knock out Oleksandr Usyk in three rounds – as his power will be ‘too much’. Joshua is set to face the former cruiserweight king in September having been ordered by the WBO to do so.

Usyk, who won gold at the same 2012 Olympics as AJ, moved up to heavyweight in 2019, becoming mandatory challenger in doing so.
His last at cruiserweight was in 2018 against Tony Bellew, in a performance AJ’s sparring partner Emanuel Odiase believes showed weaknesses.
Odiase told SunSport: “With Joshua I think his amateur and Olympic background helps him a lot.
“He fought all kinds of styles in the amateurs, southpaws, orthodox, Russian style, Cuban style, that helps him and I feel like Usyk still isn’t a full grown heavyweight.
“You saw Usyk fight Tony Bellew, the first couple of rounds Usyk struggled with Tony Bellew, who is naturally a cruiserweight.
“If Anthony Joshua can capitalise on that in the first couple of rounds when Usyk is getting into his flow, then he can knock him out.
“I would say it’s a knockout in three rounds or so for AJ, because if Usyk gets in his flow, he’s hard to beat.
“When he gets his distance and everything right, he’s hard to beat, but I feel like the power of AJ will be too much for Usyk.”

German amateur Odiase, who was a hopeful for the 2024 Olympics before setting his sights on the pros, was called into Joshua’s last training camp.
He was used a sparring partner to replicate Kubrat Pulev, 40, who AJ later knocked out in nine rounds.
Joshua believed it set him up with an undisputed title decider with Tyson Fury who tried to walk away from his contracted rematch with Deontay Wilder.
But Wilder, 35, was awarded the right to a third fight with Fury, 32, set for July 24 in Las Vegas.
It left Joshua, 31, left out in the cold and forced to face Usyk, 34, having been ordered by the WBO to do so.

With AJ shifting his camp to prepare for the slick southpaw, it means stylistically Odiase will not be needed in sparring.
But the prospect – guided by Wladimir Klitschko’s ex-manager Bernd Boente – is still armed with the experience he gained from rubbing shoulders with Joshua in his Sheffield HQ last year.
Odiase revealed: “With Joshua I learned it’s so important to keep the same people around with you that you had from the start.
“He has his guys around him that he started his career with, his cousin Ben Ileyemi is always taking care of everything security-wise.
“He’s always with Joshua and he helps keep him grounded and humble. Joshua says ‘Stay Humble’ but he really is.”

Anthony Joshua points out Deontay Wilder’s biggest weakness and claims rival has ‘just one weapon’ ahead of Fury rematch

Joshua, 31, will take on Oleksandr Usyk next after his hopes of facing Tyson Fury were dashed by Wilder’s trilogy contract clause.
The Alabama heavyweight will get a shot at redemption against Fury after being knocked out by the ‘Gypsy King’ last year.
But Joshua doesn’t think his Brit rival Fury will have too many problems in the pair’s third bout.
AJ said on Sky Sports News: “He (Wilder) isn’t an elite-level fighter, in my opinion.
“He’s good. It’s the heavyweights, so they always know one punch can change the course of a fight.
“But I’ve never, ever seen in the heavyweight division a fighter going to war with just one weapon, which is what they say is his right hand.
“When you get to the top level? Trust me, that don’t last anymore. That don’t work.
“As we’ve seen now with certain fights of elite-level fighters, he struggles at the top level, and there’s a lot more of us waiting for that opportunity as well to kick his ass.”

Joshua and Wilder haven’t yet come close to meeting in the ring, but the American wants a crack at AJ if he can get past Fury on July 24.
“Most definitely, hands down,” Wilder said when he was asked if he wanted to fight AJ. “Without no excuses, no mandatories, nothing in the way.”
He added: “As I see, they already making up excuses. They already got a mandatory planned ahead.
“No one really wants to fight someone like me, and I don’t blame them.”
Joshua was unsure what Wilder was referring to when asked for his response.
AJ said: “This is the first time I’m talking about Deontay Wilder, so I don’t know what excuses he’s thinking I’m making.
“I’m a throwback fighter. Check the resume, I’ve been in with all of them. The new school and the old school, and there’s still a lot more to do. I’m fighting a great fighter in Usyk.

“I will fight them all. Wilder is just another one in the pecking order, no problem.
“I don’t know what excuses he’s talking about. Talk is cheap, it’s the cheapest thing to buy on Earth is talk.
“I am an elite-level fighter. I’m not one of those tomato cans he’s knocked out.
“He’d better watch what he’s saying and have a reality check, because when the day comes for me and him to face, I know what I’m capable of doing.”

Former undisputed cruiserweight champ Usyk will head into the bout undefeated with 18 consecutive wins.
The 34-year-old vacated his cruiserweight titles in 2019 to make the step up to heavyweight and has conquered both Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora.
Usyk has KO’d 13 of his opponents on his way to the top but his stats don’t deter heavyweight champ Joshua.
When asked about the danger Usyk possesses, Watford-born superstar fired back to Sky Sports: “None. I fear none of them. He don’t bring me nothing I ain’t seen before.
“I fear none of them. He don’t bring nothing I ain’t seen before. Two hands, two legs, a brain and a bit of heart.
“He’s a good fighter, I’m challenging myself in training. So yeah, let’s get it on.”
Joshua was initially set to take on British rival Tyson Fury before their unified title bout collapsed.
The 31-year-old admitted he wanted to fight Usyk in August but the bout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will take place the following month.
