Team GB boxer Ben Whittaker REFUSES to wear silver medal on podium after losing Olympic final against Arlen Lopez

BOXER Ben Whittaker was so devastated with his Olympic final loss he refused to wear his silver medal on the podium. The brilliantly talented light-heavyweight lit up the Games in Tokyo with his eye-catching and slick back-foot style.

But he was unable to overcome the final hurdle in his long journey to Olympic gold as he was outpointed by Cuban Arlen Lopez.
Lopez, who won gold at Rio 2016 at middleweight, beat the Brit on a split-decision.
And Whittaker, 24, was left heartbroken after defeat, so much so that he could not even bare celebrate his runner up prize, putting it in his pocket.
He told the BBC: “You don’t win silver, you lose gold. I’m very disappointed with myself. I didn’t perform good.
“I am very disappointed. I feel like a failure. He was very good but you are in this game to win gold, not silver.
“This feeling will stick with me now. I don’t want this feeling again.”
I am very disappointed. I feel like a failure. He was very good but you are in this game to win gold, not silver. Ben Whittaker
Whittaker’s stance may appear unusual, but it echoes the mindset boxing legend Floyd Mayweather had after he was reduced to bronze in 1996.
Mayweather, now 44, was robbed in the semi-finals and was left so disgusted he gave his medal to his grandmother to keep.
Years later he famously stated you cannot win a bronze if you were beaten, believing he instead ‘received’ the medal.
Whittaker, who did later wear his silver after coming off the podium, had a similar winning mentality.
He said: “I don’t want to look like a baby or a spoiled brat but I am so upset that I didn’t win the gold. I feel like I lost gold. I can’t celebrate silver.
“Maybe in a couple of years when I’ve got kids I can look back and say your dad lost a gold medal. But that is all it is.
“I want to put this to the back of my mind because I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve.
    ‘THAT’S A WINNERS ATTITUDE’
“I want to thank God for putting me in this position and everyone in Great Britain for getting behind me.
“Sorry for making you wake-up and seeing me let you down.”
Whittaker was praised by Piers Morgan, who tweeted: “‘You don’t win silver, you lose gold. I’m very disappointed – I feel like a failure. You’re in this game to win gold.’
“Love this – finally, an athlete at these Olympics prepared to tell the truth about competing in elite sport. Good for you.”
Another online agreed: “That’s a winners attitude – and no doubt he will get that gold next time.”

But despite Whittaker’s competitive nature winning the approval of some, others disagreed.
One said: “He needs to tone the misery down a bit. How many people have silver medals!”
Another said: “His unsporting behaviour really irritated me. He should learn to be gracious even in defeat.” More

Tommy Fury could face Jake Paul NEXT if he beats YouTuber’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor after signing two-fight deal

TOMMY FURY could face Jake Paul NEXT if he beats the YouTuber’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor as part of his new two-fight deal. Fury features on the undercard of Paul’s headliner against ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley, on Sunday, August 29.

The light-heavyweight, younger brother to unbeaten heavyweight Tyson, penned a two-fight contract with US powerhouse Showtime.
It offers him the chance to announce himself to the US market by beating MMA fighter Taylor, who has been sparring Paul, on his American debut.
And afterwards, providing the celebrity pair win, it paves the way for an expected pay-per-view fight between the two.
Fury’s Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren told SunSport: “It’s a two-fight deal and we’ll see what happens.
“The reason that I pushed for this is because he called Tommy out a while ago, Jake Paul, he started, ‘Oh, I’d fight him’.
“Now, they’re both on the same card, the public will make it happen, providing they both win. The public can then force that fight.
“For me, it’s a fight I really fancy Tommy for.”

Fury has become a huge star in Britain due to his world champion brother and stint on reality TV show Love Island in 2019.
He is now 6-0, but has so far faced journeyman opposition, a common theme for any boxer at the start of their careers.
For Paul, he has chosen the PPV route, preferring to fight well-named opposition but equally limited in skillset.
And he has moved to 3-0 all by KO against YouTuber ‘AnEsonGib’, ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 37, and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, 37.
Paul’s polarising persona and highlight-reel wins has fuelled him with the belief he beats Fury, who was born into boxing.
He even considered the Brit for his return, but opted for Woodley, 39, due to his bigger Stateside profile.
“Now, they’re both on the same card, the public will make it happen, providing they both win. The public can then force that fight. Frank Warren on Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul
But Fury’s spot on Paul’s undercard, against his training partner too, perfectly puts the pair in place to fight if they both prevail.
And Warren will not stop the online rivals from settling the score in the ring, where millions are due to be made.
He said: “They obviously fancy it and if they fancy it as much as they say, then let’s get it on.
“I believe Tommy has the tools to do a job on him, from what I’ve seen but until they get in there, who knows?

“It seems to be a lot of people from what I understand, from the internet and social media, they keep talking about the fight.
“I’ve been promoting boxing at the highest level for many, many years, I look at this and see what it is, they’ve got a massive audience.
“And for me, if Tommy is going to earn the type of money which is being splashed about, who am I to stand in his way?”

Anthony Joshua tipped to KO Tyson Fury in the last nine minutes’ of undisputed heavyweight fight ahead of Usyk bout

ANTHONY JOSHUA has been backed to get a late stoppage against Tyson Fury in their long-awaited undisputed heavyweight title fight. The Brits were due to throw down in Saudi Arabia a week on Saturday before an American judge ordered The Gypsy King to have a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.

Joshua’s chances of beating the WBC king have been written off by many, but former WBA featherweight champ Barry McGuigan reckons the Olympian will be victorious in the long-awaited Battle of Britain.
The Irishman told Pro Boxing Fans: “I think Joshua wins.
“Fury is tricky and awkward, but I think Joshua is more versatile.
“He can do both aggressive and boxing as he showed against Andy Ruiz, but he also showed a vulnerability. It’s only my opinion.
“I think that Tyson has a chance with anybody, because he’s so naturally gifted and he’s quick.
“But I just think Joshua’s extra power in the last nine minutes of the fight will take their toll.”
Before Joshua and Fury can think about sharing the ring, they must first get through their respective bouts with Oleksandr Usyk and Wilder.
Joshua, 32, will face the undefeated Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 25.
I think Joshua is more versatileBarry McGuigan on Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury
Fury, meanwhile, will renew his rivalry with Wilder in Las Vegas on October 9.
McGuigan, 60, is confident Joshua will do his part preserve the blockbuster undisputed bout, although he expects Usyk to put up some stern resistance.
He said: “I think the problem with Usyk is he’s not ever going to naturally be able to gain weight and put on a stone and a half which is what he needs to do even to get up to a reasonable weight for a heavyweight.
“He will give Joshua problems early on with his trickery and his boxing skills.
“But eventually Joshua will get to him and either grind him down and stop him or beat him on a lopsided unanimous decision.”
Joshua is relsihing his showdown with his fellow Olympic gold medallist, saying: “The date is set and we are fully locked in.
“September 25, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, I put it all on the line again and it’s time to defend my crown.

“The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.”

UFC chief Dana White ‘praying’ Vitor Belfort ‘viciously’ KO’s ‘crackhead’ Oscar De La Hoya in boxing match

UFC president Dana White admits he wants to see Vitor Belfort ‘viciously’ knock out boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya.Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Belfort will throw down with the Olympic gold medallist in a boxing match in Los Angeles on September 11.

Despite not having boxed in over 15 years, Belfort, 44, goes into his clash with the Golden Boy as the bookies’ favourite.
And White would love nothing more than to see the Brazilian put De La Hoya to sleep.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, White said: “I’m praying Vitor knocks this crackhead out – and viciously. Viciously knocks him out.”
White and De La Hoya have been engaged in a war of words for several years, with the latter recently blasting the UFC chief for not allowing MMA great Georges St-Pierre to fight him.
But the pair enjoyed a cordial relationship many moons ago.
White said of the former six-weight world champion: “As much as I can’t stand that dirtbag, De La Hoya is legit.
“Back in the day when me and De La Hoya were cool, I actually was up in his camp.
“I’ll show that MMA and ex-UFC fighters can take down even the best boxer in the world.Vitor Belfort on his showdown with Oscar De La Hoya
“Just his jab could knock people out.
“De La Hoya in his prime was the real deal. This is a real fight between two real guys.
“I think that Vitor obviously has the power to KO him, but De La Hoya’s no joke, either.”
Despite White’s past friendship with De La Hoya, who has been open about his history of cocaine and alcohol abuse in recent years, the UFC chief wants to see the 48-year-old laid out on the canvas.
He said: “Hopefully all the coke-sniffing and tequila drinking and whatever other s**t that guy has been up to has caught up with him and Vitor lays one right on the big mouth of his and knocks him unconscious.”
UFC 12 tournament winner Belfort is relishing the opportunity to test his skills against the 1992 Olympian, saying: “Oscar De La Hoya is a true superstar in the boxing world and one of the greatest and most popular fighters of our time.
“While we both have a great deal of respect for each other’s accomplishments, on September 11, I will make my MMA fans proud.

“I’ll show that MMA and ex-UFC fighters can take down even the best boxer in the world.

Watch as UFC legend Vitor Belfort FLOORS Bryce Hall in sparring with brutal punch leaving TikTok star in agony

VITOR BELFORT left TikToker Bryce Hall wincing in agony during a brutal sparring session. Belfort, a former UFC champion, fights Oscar De La Hoya on September 11 in the boxing legend’s return to the ring.
Vitor Belfort left TikToker Bryce Hall wincing in agony after taking no prisoners in sparring
Vitor Belfort twice dropped Bryce Hall in sparring
The bout raised eyebrows initially, with the Brazilian, 44, having boxed just once before, in 2006, while De La Hoya, 48, has been retired 13 years.
But perhaps even more surprising was Belfort’s choice of sparring partner, social media star Hall, who recently lost to online rival Austin McBroom.
The pair filmed a sparring session which was posted online and could only be described as one-way traffic.
Belfort twice trapped a sheepish-looking Hall in the corner and left him feeling the affects of some brutal body shots as he was floored.
The American celebrity was quick to defend himself on Twitter having likely been mocked for his wimpy display.
Hall, 21, tweeted: “why do people hold me to the boxing standard of a pro when ive only trained in boxing for 2 months?
“im learning and trying to get better! sorry im not floyd mayweather yet.”
Hall faced McBroom, 29, in a TikTok vs YouTube boxing event in June – representing the former.
But it ended in disaster for him, as he was dominated, punched around the ring and beaten in three rounds.
It leaves Belfort needing better sparring partners as he draws closer to his crossover fight with De La Hoya.
The veterans were initially set to box in an exhibition bout, but it will now be a professionally sanctioned contest at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

But it is subject to De La Hoya and and Belfort passing comprehensive medical testing for 40-year-old-plus fighters.
It includes an MRA and MRI of the brain, an EKG, cardiac testing, neurocognitive testing and an ophthalmologic exam.
The bout will be contested over eight two-minute rounds, despite regular pro boxing being fought over three-minute rounds.

Tyson Fury films with Gary Neville in Morecambe just week after Anthony Joshua badmouthed Gypsy King to Man Utd legend

TYSON FURY has been spotted filming with Gary Neville just a WEEK after Anthony Joshua badmouthed the Gypsy King to the Manchester United legend. The 6ft 9in boxing megastar, 32, was spotted strolling along Morecambe beach with Neville for what is presumably an upcoming episode of The Overlap.

It’s not yet known what was said, but Fury is likely to have a typically brash reply to AJ’s latest comments.
Last week, Joshua revealed he will ‘100 per cent’ fight Fury – but admitted he isn’t sure if he respects Fury and revealed he sees the Gyspy King as his ‘enemy’.
Their eagerly-anticipated fight was put on hold after Fury was ordered to finish his trilogy with Deontay Wilder – but both British fighters are eager to go toe-to-toe for the bragging rights.
Joshua told Gary Neville’s The Overlap: “Without the belts? I rate that.
“That’s what I’m talking about. We’ll fight, 100 per cent, let’s do it.
“I’ll smoke that guy. I will. It’s annoying. For me, I don’t really get into the Twitter back and forth, because it’s Twitter fingers.
“Anyone can sit behind a computer and talk. Let’s be real, let’s be honest. Let’s let the people know.
“You’re the one that let the fans down, because everyone seems to think.
“I fought on December 12th. When they were like, ‘Who do you want to fight next?’ I said I don’t want to call out any names.
“And I know because I’m going to start shouting out people’s names and I’m going to be in this position now where the guys’ name I’m shouting out doesn’t want to fight or he’s not ready to fight.”
    ‘ENEMIES’
Asked if he respects Fury by Neville, Joshua replied: “I don’t know.
“I like [former opponent] Wladimir Klitschko, he’s cool.
“I don’t know. I don’t look at anyone in my industry like that. They are just people that I want to fight.
“I haven’t got no time for none of them. I’m not friends with no one.
“They are all enemies at the end of the day.”
AJ is the current WBA, IBF and WBO champion with Fury’s WBC title the only missing crown from his heavyweight collection.

Joshua’s long-standing dream has been to reign as the first-ever, four-belt champion in the blue riband division.
But after years of back-and-forths with rival Fury, British bragging rights could even outweigh a place in the undisputed history books.
Stay tuned for Fury’s take on the long-running saga.

Team GB boxer Ben Whittaker wins silver after losing Tokyo Olympics final against Arlen Lopez

BEN WHITTAKER’S quest for Olympic gold ended in a convincing defeat by Cuban Arlen Lopez in the light-heavyweight final. The 24-year-old from Darlaston, West Midlands had to settle for silver as he was out-boxed by Lopez, the middleweight champion from Rio five years ago.

It left Team GB still waiting for a first boxing gold of the Tokyo Games, despite claiming a haul of six medals.
Lopez, far busier in his workrate, earned the decision of four of the five judges, with the rangey Whittaker unable to make much impact.
Earlier, super-heavyweight Frazer Clarke was stopped in the final round of his semi-final against the giant Uzbek Bakhodir Jalolov.
Jalolov reopened a deep cut over the Brit’s eye, which he had suffered in his quarter-final win.
The big man from Burton is captain of the British team – who still have two chances of gold, through flyweight Galal Yafai and women’s middleweight Lauren Price, who are both through to the semi-finals.
And Clarke, 29, said: “It’s not the fairytale I wanted but I’m proud.
“The last six months I’ve made more sacrifices for boxing than I had in the previous 18 years.

Tommy Fury brands opponent Anthony Taylor an ‘Oompa Loompa’ and reckons he could beat him AND Jake Paul in same night

TOMMY FURY branded his next opponent Anthony Taylor an ‘Oompa Loompa’ and said he could beat him AND Jake Paul in the same night. Fury faces the MMA fighter on Sunday, August 29 in Cleveland with Paul topping the bill against ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley.

The YouTube sensation, 24, has been sparring with Taylor, 32, in Puerto Rico in preparation for this month’s event.
And together they filmed a callout video, where Taylor blasted ‘Tommy Fairy’ and told his girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague: ‘come to my Love Island’.
It did not take long for Fury to respond, as he mocked ‘Pretty Boy’ Taylor’s 5ft 7in frame by likening him to a 4ft Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
And he also had some choice words for Paul, who he plans to fight next.
Fury, 22, said: “Just a little message to my two favourite boys, Jake Paul, Anthony Taylor.
I look forward to seeing you on fight week because talk’s cheap and I want you to say it to my face, and see how brave you are then. Tommy Fury on Jake Paul and Anthony Taylor
“Anthony, you ain’t going to be so pretty after the 29th mate. I’m going to smash all the front of your face clean in and that’s a promise.
“And after I’ve done you, you little Oompa Loompa, I’m coming for your best pal Jake Paul.
“Because the both of you couldn’t beat him in the same night together.
“So, I look forward to seeing you on fight week because talk’s cheap and I want you to say it to my face, and see how brave you are then.
“I’ll see you soon boys, take it easy.”
