Georges St-Pierre open to boxing switch when UFC contract expires after Dana White blocked Oscar De La Hoya fight

GEORGES ST-PIERRE is open to a boxing switch when his UFC contract expires after Dana White blocked his fight with Oscar De La Hoya. The UFC legend was offered as De La Hoya’s comeback opponent on September 11, but White intervened.

St-Pierre, 40, is still contracted to the UFC, despite retiring in 2019 and not fighting since 2017, with De La Hoya, 48, now facing Vitor Belfort, 44.
But when his deal runs out, GSP admitted he would consider lacing up the gloves.
St-Pierre, 40, told Ariel Helwani:  “I’m cheering for Vitor, Vitor is a friend of mine.
“But if something happens and maybe Oscar wins, or something happens like that, maybe I’ll get Oscar after.
“We’ll see. I’m still under contract for, I think, another year or two with UFC. But I’m not going nowhere.
“If the idea interests me still when I’ll be 41 or 42, maybe I’ll jump back in it.”

UFC president White allowed Ben Askren – who had been retired a year – to fight YouTuber Jake Paul in April.
But Askren, who was still tied down to the UFC, was beaten in round one in the pay-per-view fight with Triller.
White has clashed with Triller in the past and more infamously with former six-weight boxing champion De La Hoya.
And his distain for the Golden Boy was so bad he flat out refused to let St-Pierre fight him, fearing his rival would win.
GSP explained: “Dana did not want it. I knew he hates Oscar but I said to him, ‘Listen, I’m going to make Oscar look bad because I’m in great shape.
“‘I’ve been staying in great shape the whole time and I’m going to do a full boxing training camp with Freddie Roach and his world champions there, so I’ll be very well prepared.’
“If the idea interests me still when I’ll be 41 or 42, maybe I’ll jump back in it.Georges St-Pierre on fighting again
“At first he says to me that the reason why he did not want it is because he thought that Oscar would basically destroy me in a boxing match.
“And I had some good arguments — I told him that I believe Oscar has more mileage than I do, he’s no longer in his prime, I stayed busy the whole time, I’m still in great shape, I’m going to be very well prepared and I’m taking this fight very seriously.
“If I do it, because it’s my name — my image is attached to it — I will do it 100 percent.
“And I told Dana, I said, ‘If there’s one MMA fighter that go to boxing and look good in this situation, it would be me.’
“And at first he refused. Then he thought about it but he came back with the argument that, oh, no, it’s not because he thinks Oscar is going to win; he thinks it’s because he doesn’t like the fact that Triller takes me and makes money off my back while I’m still under contract with UFC.”

David Haye, 40, admits he ‘wouldn’t be able to resist’ fighting Lennox Lewis, 55, after comeback against Joe Fournier

DAVID HAYE has admitted he ‘wouldn’t be able to resist’ fighting Lennox Lewis after his comeback against Joe Fournier. The British boxing legend retired in 2018 after consecutive defeats to Tony Bellew and also losing his battle with injuries.

But fast forward three years, and Haye is set to return to the ring against millionaire businessman Fournier, who happens to be his best friend.
The close pals will settle an argument in the ring on September 11, the night Oscar De La Hoya, 48, also makes his comeback.
Haye, 40, has insisted the fight is nothing more than a brief cameo in the ring, to teach London nightclub mogul Fournier, 38, a lesson.
But, if all goes to plan and his ego is spiked, the former heavyweight champion refused to rule out an extended stay in the sport.
Haye told the Daily Mail: “Now I have to admit that if this goes great then exceptional circumstances could trigger another five to ten percent chance of me doing something more serious.”
Asked who would be the irresistible opponent, he said: “Lennox. I’ve always idolised him.
“In all honesty, I wouldn’t be able to resist the honour of sharing a ring with this giant of the game who is not only one of the best heavyweights of all time but in my opinion arguably the greatest British boxer ever.”

Haye formerly promoted Fournier, a 9-0 light-heavyweight, and the pair were holidaying together in Mykonos just last month.
But it was there when a dispute broke out on who would win between them right now.
One phone call to Triller – who brought Mike Tyson out of retirement in November – and the best pals will put bragging rights on the line.
And Haye admitted if a stunning KO against Fournier puts him in line to then fight his idol Lewis, then so be it.
He said: “If knocking out Joe can help that happen then sorry, pal, I’ll have to get out the old Hayemaker.
“As they say, in boxing you can never say never again.”

Oleksandr Usyk looks in superb shape as he shares latest training pics ahead of Anthony Joshua showdown next month

OLEKSANDR USYK looks to have piled on the muscle as he prepares for his world title fight against Anthony Joshua. The 34 year old will have only his third fight at heavyweight as he meets WBO, WBA and IBF king Joshua on September 25.
Oleksandr Usyk is looking in terrific shape ahead of his fight against Anthony Joshua
Usyk looks to have put on some significant bulk as he continues his heavyweight journey
Usyk unified the cruiserweight division, and decided to step up into the land of the giants.
Some critics claim the Ukrainian will be ‘too small’ to become a world champion.
But judging by his latest training photos, Usyk should hold no fear on his big night under the Tottenham Stadium lights.
Despite his undefeated boxing record, coming up against AJ will be too big a ‘leap’ to overcome’ according to up-and-coming Brit heavyweight Fabio Wardley.
He told Betfred TV’s boxing show: “[Oleksandr Usyk] has not pulled off the best performances since he’s been in the heavyweight division.
“So to then jump in with someone like Joshua, it’s quite a big leap.

“Not to say that Usyk doesn’t have the experience to deal with that but just going off what we have seen, that is where I’d edge it.
“I think he’s found that adjusting period into the heavyweight slightly more difficult than he initially anticipated.”
Usyk, 34, has put on a considerable amount of mass in a bid to dethrone Joshua and scupper the Brit’s eagerly-anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury.
But promoter Eddie Hearn reckons the undefeated Ukrainian is still an undersized heavyweight.
He told talkSPORT: “I think that Usyk will never be a fully-fledged heavyweight – a real heavyweight in terms of size.”
The Matchroom Boxing chief, however, reckons Olympic gold medallist Usyk makes up for his lack of size with his array of skills.
He continued: “What he will always have is a huge amount of skill.

“It takes time for people to bed into heavyweight, so put it this way, it would’ve been a lot easier fight for AJ a year-and-a-half ago.
“Now Usyk has fought a real heavyweight contender in Chisora, that will actually help him to start to understand what needs to be done.
“But AJ’s a different kind of beast. A good big guy will always beat a good small guy, so we’ll see.”

It has been confirmed that Haye’s battle against Fournier WILL count on his pro record, which stands at an impressive 28-4.
However, the eight-round duel will set fans back £25 if they want to watch it on PPV through FITE TV.

Another tweeted: “£25 to watch Haye fight his best mate at 3am, followed by a 50+ year old De La Hoya? To each their own I supose!”
One quipped: “You would need to have a screw loose to pay to watch that.”
Another added: “Whoever pays for this needs to give their head a good wobble.”
Indeed, Haye claims he is being paid MORE to face Fournier than he did to fight old foe Bellew.
Haye told iFL TV: “It’s more than the pay [for the Bellew fight. More than the pay. It’s crazy.
“It’s more than what I got [paid] for Bellew one. I know, that’s what I’m saying. It’s crazy dough.

The acquisition of Liddell, 51, would certainly further boost the profile of the fast-growing sport.
But signing The Iceman is a risk BKFC president Dave Feldman isn’t willing to take.
Feldman recently told SunSport: “People want us to sign some of these guys that have been around for a long time.
“Like Chuck Liddell’s name came up. Chuck’s great.
“He’s phenomenal, he’s a legend, he’s been in there with everybody in the world and he could probably bring a lot of name power to our organisation.
“But we feel that Chuck is probably not cut out for bare-knuckle at this stage of his life.

“I mean he’s 51 years old and it’s something we don’t want to take a risk on.”
While Feldman may not be willing to take a risk on Liddell, the former fighter is looking at adding more big names to BKFC’s roster.
BKFC have made several big acquisitions over the last few 18-months, capturing the services of Paige VanZant, Rachael Ostovich and most recently former UFC featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes.
And Feldman believes several household names will soon ink contracts with the fast-growing promotion.
We feel that Chuck is probably not cut out for bare-knuckle at this stage of his lifeBKFC president Dave Feldman
He said: “We’re not going to take a risk on everything, but some of the names out there we’re definitely going to sign.
“There’s going to be a lot of free agents coming soon from all different combat sports because of just the way things are going.
“They’re ending their contracts and they’re looking for a new home.”

BKFC will return to action on Friday for their 20th card, which will take place at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.
The event will be headlined by a showdown between Johnny Bedford and Reggie Barnett Jr.
