Andy Ruiz Jr undergoes knee surgery after being left ‘unable to run’ and faces fight to return to action this year

ANDY RUIZ JR has undergone surgery on his right knee after being left ‘unable to run’ with his next fight now delayed. Ruiz returned to the ring in May – for the first time since losing his rematch with Anthony Joshua – and did so by beating Chris Arreola.

It was his first under new coach Eddy Reynoso, who also trains Canelo Alvarez, and a second comeback fight against Charles Martin was lined up for October.
But now it faces being delayed after Ruiz, 31, decided to go under the knife to fix a long-standing injury.
His dad, Andy Ruiz Sr, told ESPN: “He underwent surgery on his right knee, he had been struggling with that knee for about three years.
“He could not run very much, he could not do certain movements, he used gel to mitigate the pain, but it was not enough and he made the decision to get the procedure done, which was an arthroscopy.
“It was done by the same doctor who operated on Canelo, Pedro Lomeli Jaime.”
Ruiz, who won the unified titles against AJ in June 2019 but lost them six months later, was in talks with ex-champion Martin, 35.

There is still hope the Mexican-American can be fighting fit to return by the end of the year.
Ruiz Sr said: “They gave us hope that he would come back in December.
“The physical trainer and the doctor told us that if everything goes well as it is now, then there is that possibility, but we will see when the time comes.
“For now we are happy that the surgery went well.”

Canelo tweeted out the good news, writing: “This November 6 we’ll put Mexican boxing on top. Going for the missing belt.”
The agreement will also finally bring an end to lengthy talks between both camps.
Canelo and Plant looked set to face each other on September 18.
But talks broke down earlier this month after Canelo wanted assurances over a £28million payday – even if Plant was to withdraw.
And at the end of July, observers claimed the clash was ‘100 per cent dead’.
Mexican ace Canelo, who boasts a 56-1-2 record, is on a mission to take Plant’s IBF title and become the undisputed super-middleweight world champion.

He could then decide to move up a weight again – this time to light heavyweight.
Reports claim Canelo was initially looking to fight WBA light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol.
And he could return for the Russian should he triumph over Plant.
It won’t be easy though, with the American boasting an impressive 21-0 record.
But Eddie Hearn believes Canelo already has Bivol in his sights once he defeats Plant.

The Matchroom promoter said: “They (Canelo and his team) do want to fight Caleb Plant. That is what they want at the end of the day.
“Dmitry Bivol is there, he accepted the fight, he’s ready to fight, but the ultimate goal for Canelo is to be undisputed at 168 lbs. So they’ll [Canelo] reignite that.
“He [Canelo] likes to take challenges, and he loves to take great fights. Dmitry Bivol and all these guys at 175 are all tough.”

But he will return to the ring on September 11 as part of the Triller undercard for Oscar De La Hoya’s clash with Vitor Belfort.
It has been announced that Haye’s battle against Fournier WILL count on his pro record, which stands at an impressive 28-4.
However, the eight-round duel will set fans back £9.99 if they want to watch it on PPV through FITE TV in the UK, SunSport can confirm.
On the undercard, Anderson Silva, 46, will fight fellow former UFC champion Tito Ortiz, also 46, in a boxing bout.

Haye’s opponent and friend Fournier – who fought on Triller in April – helped set up the fight.

He told iFL TV: “It’s more than the pay [for the Bellew fight. More than the pay. It’s crazy.
“It’s more than what I got [paid] for Bellew one. I know, that’s what I’m saying. It’s crazy dough.

Fury, 33, has vowed to make lighter work of the Bronze Bomber third time around, but former heavyweight champ David Haye reckons the Brit isn’t guaranteed to have his hand raised.
The Hayemaker told iFL TV: “You’ve got to give Deontay Wilder a chance against anybody.
“Just watch their first fight. Anyone that punches [as hard as Wilder].
“He hasn’t lost his punch power, and Tyson Fury’s chin hasn’t gotten any better.

Haye is currently leaning towards a second successive victory for Fury but admits there are several unknowns going into the contest.
When pressed further on the third instalment of Fury vs Wilder, the 40-year-old said: “It’s unknown.
“On paper, you’d have to say off the strength of the last fight, I was ringside watching that fight, and Tyson Fury put forth one of the best performances from a British heavyweight challenging for a world title, which is what he was doing in challenging for the WBC title.
“He won it in the exact fashion he said he was going to. He’s going to walk across the ring, he’s going to put it on him, and he’s going to bash him up.
“Can he [Fury] do it again with the same tactics?

    “Maybe, we’ll find out. I don’t know.
“Is Tyson Fury better now than he was back then?
“Has he got the added confidence after beating him, or is he overconfident over time.
“Has Wilder learned from that first loss, and has he improved? It’s completely unknown. They haven’t boxed for a long time. It’s a long time since Vegas.”
Fury, 33, has finally begun training camp for his third clash with Wilder following the birth of his daughter, Athena, who was recently released from the ICU.

On Wednesday night, the former lineal heavyweight champion tweeted “Right, guys, I’m going offline until October 10, som1 [sic] else will be keeping you updated.

Hearn ‘moving away’ from ‘cringe’ YouTube fights to focus on serious boxing but has no issue with Logan or Jake Paul

EDDIE HEARN doesn’t want to be involved with ‘cringe’ YouTube boxing anymoreHearn, Matchroom boxing promoter, dabbled in the YouTube boxing scene back in 2019 when he staged a professional bout between UK YouTube megastar KSI and American social media sensation Logan Paul.

    Jake Paul entered elite company
Since 2019’s fight between the two YouTubers, older brother Logan has gone on to face the legendary Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition fight.
And younger brother Jake – whose professional debut was staged by Hearn – has gone down the professional boxing route and made light work of AnEsonGib, Nate Robinson and Ben Askren.
His next opponent is former UFC welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley on August 29.
But Hearn – who promotes some of boxing’s biggest stars like Anthony Joshua – is now trying to move away from YouTube boxing because he feels “boxing needs to stand up and be counted”.
He told talkSPORT: “I’ve been on that side when I did KSI vs Logan Paul.
“It’s a mad world and, since I did that fight, it seems like there’s a YouTube fight every week.

“I’ve tried to move a little bit away from that because I think boxing needs to stand up and be counted.
“And the only way we can do that is to make great fights.
“Because if we don’t make great fights, what we’re seeing in terms of David Haye vs Joe Fournier, Jake Paul, Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul, will become much more regular, because they do rate.”
Hearn shut down the idea that YouTubers can make great fights.
But pointed out Jake in particular who is “putting the work in” to make something of his professional boxing career.
He continued: “No, not really (don’t make good fights).
How Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley compare ahead of their boxing match
“I don’t mind it, look, Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley, I don’t have an issue with it.
“Jake Paul’s putting the work in, he’s now had three fights, he’s fighting a guy that can fight in some capacity and he’s a UFC champion.
“Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul was just a joke and so’s David Haye vs Joe Fournier, but it’s just a bit of fun…
“Some people want to almost respect their legacy in the sport and some just wanna make as much money as possible.
“We just need to focus on boxing.
“The Josh Warrington card with Katie Taylor and Conor Benn. The AJ vs Usyk fight, this is what we need to focus on.
    Jake Paul’s boxing ‘hit-list’
“We need to deliver numbers for DAZN and our broadcasters because otherwise broadcasters will be asking for YouTube fights and that’s not a sport I wanna be in.
“I’ve done that before, we had a bit of fun, it was a bit cringe to be honest, it was tough at times, but I do understand the demand.
“But we’ve gotta make sure we focus on the sport, rather than just the other side, because otherwise you’ll see that more and more.”

Anthony Joshua to ‘KO Oleksandr Usyk with a jab’ as Ukrainan’s firepower for Tottenham tussle is ruled out

AJ will have significant size and reach advantages over the former undisputed cruiserweight king, who David Haye reckons won’t be able to take his fellow Olympian’s power on the chin.
The former WBA heavyweight champion told Sky Sports: “I think his style might be very effective if AJ was 6’2” and 14st.
“But AJ isn’t. AJ is 6’6” and he’s an absolute specimen, and he’s one of the best athletes ever in the heavyweight division.
“That just spells knockout defeat for Usyk.
“If Usyk was the future of the heavyweight division and he’s going to be good enough to beat AJ, he should have at least stopped Derek Chisora or won by a landslide.
“But he didn’t. He wasn’t able to keep the heavier man off him. He didn’t have the firepower.

“I just don’t see AJ having any problems.
“I’ll tell you exactly what punch it’s going to be – a jab, right hand and then a straight jab again.
“The jab will knock out Usyk. He will knock Usyk out with a jab.”
Haye, who is stepping back into the ring himself in a moneyspinning exhibition bout with billionaire entrepreneur Joe Fournier, reckons Usyk doesn’t have the stopping power at heavyweight to trouble Joshua.
The 40-year-old added: “He just doesn’t have the firepower.
“I can’t see any version of reality that AJ loses this fight. He looks devastating, really quick, really fast.
“He makes the same type of statement as Tyson Fury made against Deontay Wilder, where he just looks devastating.
He will knock Usyk out with a jabDavid Haye’s prediction for Anthony Joshua’s clash with Oleksandr Usyk
“Once he wins that, it will set up that undisputed fight, but obviously Fury has got to then get his business taken care of with Wilder.
“The winner of that, obviously there’s only one fight for them to take.”
Usyk is 2-0 since making his heavyweight debut in October 2019 and is ‘confident’ of causing a huge upset in his Tottenham tussle with AJ.
His promoter and countryman, Alexander Krassyuk, told MyBettingSites: “The rematch is something that is not obligatory in the mandatory fight.
“But we accepted the very fair conditions to agree to it.
“Oleksandr is very confident in his victory over AJ and how he will beat him.
“So, therefore, he easily agreed for the second bout because his mindset will be even more favourable after he wins the first.
“There were no other options for Oleksandr after he became the undisputed champion and defended against Tony Bellew.

“There was nothing else to prove at cruiserweight and staying there would for sure be a stagnation or even a step back.
“Now Alex has a huge motivation to get up at 5am every day and work as hard as he can for he has an objective in front of him.
“After just two bouts at heavyweight, Usyk signed the contract for a multiple belt showdown with the king of the heavyweights.”

Watch pop legend Usher train on pads with Floyd Mayweather as pair work out in gym session together

POP legend Usher has been hitting pads instead of high notes as he was put through his paces by Floyd Mayweather. The R&B sensation was filmed doing gym work in the ring with Money Mayweather having recently taken up a Las Vegas residency.

Ringside Views uploaded a video of the pair last Friday.
Usher, 42, can be seen dressed in a black vest and shorts and bright red boxing boots.
He ducks and dives as Mayweather, 44, swipes at him.
And he then moves into striking the pads as Money raises his hands and offers up targets.

The star, whose hits include Yeah! and I Don’t Mind, has recently taken up a residency at Ceasers Palace.
And that could see him spending more and more time with the American boxing legend at his Vegas gym.
He was also seen skating with Mayweather earlier this month.
Ringside captioned the boxing post: “Usher lights up the mitts with Floyd Mayweather.
“@usher recently trained with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. inside the squared circle.
“He recently took up a Las Vegas residency. In other words, Usher is likely to spend a considerable amount of time in Vegas.”
Several fans in the comments called for an exhibition fight between the pair.
And another joked: “Usher warning Kevin Hart.”
Earlier this week it emerged Manny Pacquiao wants a rematch with Mayweather but is not interested in fighting YouTubers Jake or Logan Paul.
The Filipino legend returns to the ring this weekend to face Yordenis Ugas for the WBA welterweight title after Errol Spence Jr was forced to pull out for eye surgery.

The 42-year-old boxing superstar still has his eyes on some huge fights and is in no mood to call time on his career in the ring.
His Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach told Sky Sports: “We would like to fight Mayweather one more time.
“But exhibitions? No. Manny is not into that.”
