Jake Paul’s sparring partners reveal how good he is in the ring as YouTuber prepares to fight ex-UFC star Tyron Woodley

JAKE PAUL has divided opinions since he burst on to the boxing scene in polarising fashion. But behind the scenes, from the YouTuber’s first white collar fight in 2018 heading into his fourth professional bout, he has put his efforts into becoming a fully fledged prizefighter.
Jake Paul pictured with his sparring in Puerto Rico
He has beaten online rival ‘AnEsonGib’, ex-NBA star Nate Robinson and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, all by knockout.
But now, Paul faces his biggest step up to date on August 29, facing ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley.
Here, SunSport spoke to those with an insight on Paul’s abilities, having shared the ring with him.
    Jake Bostwick, 18-10 MMA fighter
Bostwick, 31, was earlier in the year invited into Paul’s Miami training base to give a feel of how an experienced MMA fighter moved in the ring.
And Brit – also a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship star – was left shocked by Paul’s dedication to the sweet science.
He said: “I genuinely rate his boxing, I rate his work ethic and I rate how comfortable he is in there with someone of my calibre or anyone else he’s working with.
“I hit him with some clean shots, he didn’t care, threw some shots back, slipping, moving, his jab is good.
“He’s not just this stupid person people think he is who runs his mouth, he is super polite, the dude was like, ‘please, thank you’, he shook my hand.
“He’s very respectful. He runs his mouth and a lot of people don’t like that but he’s got nothing to lose, he doesn’t give a s***.
“He’s got money behind him, he’s got his friends behind him and if you understand who he is, he’s pretty cool.”
Jake Paul pictured with sparring partner Jake Bostwick

    Robin Safar, 11-0 light-heavyweight
Safar was asked by his trainer – and friend of Paul’s head coach BJ Flores – to help out with sparring last year.
The heavy-handed puncher sparred Paul before he beat Robinson last November, on the returning Mike Tyson’s undercard.
Safar, 28, said: “He’s got good speed and good reactions. He’s naturally born with speed, explosiveness and reactions, that’s what you’re born with.
“I feel like when I sparred him, he was developing his ring IQ, he was trying to think in the ring.
“He’s a good kid and he’s got ambition for what he’s doing, he’s determined and I believe anybody can do anything in life, no matter who you are or what your background is.

“Jake is still green, but for being green he’s good. I think he’s really good.”
Paul is yet to go past round two, due to the level of opposition, but Safar revealed he is developing knowhow between the ropes.
He explained: “He’s really good for a YouTuber, he’s a smart kid because he wouldn’t be in the position he is today if he wasn’t.
“In boxing, you’ve got to have a brain and I know Jake’s got it.
“If he can use his IQ the way he does outside of boxing, in the ring, and add the determination and ambition, he can be really good.”
    Ahmed Elbiali, 20-1 light-heavyweight
Elbiali was also on hand to help Paul in his preparation for Robinson and the pair sparred once.
He admits to holding back on the novice, but noticed some potential in the millionaire vlogger under the guidance of ex-cruiserweight contender Flores.
Elbiali, 30, said: “Jake’s athletic and powerful, but you can’t compare him to seasoned professionals, there is no comparison.
“He seems relaxed and composed which is really good. He has a great right hand, great right hand, very strong, to the body or head.
“He used his jab well and he listens to BJ well.
“BJ is a good fighter, a good coach, he knows the sport very well and he’s passing on a lot of knowledge to Jake too.
“Jake truly, truly, truly, does listen to BJ and he truly does love the sport of boxing and he really believes what he’s saying, he’s not bulls***ing.
“And that’s where I respect it, a man with passion is unstoppable.”
Ahmed Elbiali pictured with Floyd Mayweather
    Jean Pascal, 20-1 light-heavyweight, 35–6–1 (1)
After Paul and his brother Logan moved to Puerto Rico, they were regularly training with Pascal, a former world champion.
And the light-heavyweight compared to two brothers and their differing styles.
Pascal, 38, said: “Logan is more natural, he’s a gifted athlete, a naturally-gifted athlete.
“Jake Paul is more technical, he relies more on his technique, he has good technique. It’s two different styles but both brothers are good.
“I was like a lot of people at the beginning, thinking these guys are just YouTubers, Jake and Logan.
“But to be in camp with them, to see them training hard everyday, training like world-class boxers, I was surprised and very, very shocked.
“They earned my respect because of that, I’ve seen them in the gym like every single day and they have love for our sport.
“I think it’s good for boxing that these guys bring some eyeballs into the sport as more people are going to watch the fight because of them.”

Fury controversially drew with Wilder in December 2018, climbing off the canvas in the final round of a dramatic fight which many felt he won.
After two more wins each, the pair then faced off once more in February 2020, with Fury dominating his heavyweight rival before stopping him in the seventh round.
They were scheduled to face each other again later in the year but coronavirus-related issues led to Fury abandoning those plans and instead lining up an undisputed fight with Anthony Joshua.
Wilder had other ideas though as he took the matter to court in a bid to legally force Fury into a trilogy fight.

And it worked, with an arbitrator ruling that the Brit had to face his American adversary yet again.
Originally scheduled for July 24, the bout was then postponed again following a Covid outbreak in Fury’s camp.
But now it appears all system are go for the two to meet in the ring one final time, 20 months after their last clash.

Tommy Fury vs Anthony Taylor: How Love Island star and MMA fighter compare ahead of PPV fight

TOMMY FURY could be just one fight away from facing Jake Paul – but first has to beat the YouTuber’s sparring partner. Fury features on his online rival’s undercard on August 29, which will help build towards a pay-per-view clash between the celebrity pair.

But standing in the Love Island star’s way is MMA fighter Taylor, a sparring partner of Paul’s.
It will mark Fury’s US debut and gives him the perfect chance to send out a message to Paul, who headlines the night against Tyron Woodley.
Here, SunSport runs down how he compares to Taylor.
    Tommy Fury
Fury was born into boxing having grown up watching brother Tyson and cousin Hughie, while being trained by his dad John and uncle Peter.
He quietly learnt his trade in the gym but had a limited amateur career of only ten bouts.
After being a relatively unknown but ever-present part of Tyson’s team, in 2018 Fury turned professional with much fanfare.
But that sky rocketed in the summer of 2019, when he entered ITV’s hit reality TV show Love Island, while 2-0.
After coming runner-up with now-girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague, Fury became a star of his own, well out of Tyson’s shadow.
In the period since, he has improved to 6-0 with signs of promise, but still remains untested having faced only journeymen opponents.
Fury, 22, was taken the distance in his return to the ring in June, but showed glimpses of a smart jab and eye-catching right uppercut.
He will take in not only an experience advantage over Taylor, he is also naturally a STONE heavier, and has a bigger reach.

    Anthony Taylor
Taylor, 32, turned pro in MMA six years ago but got off to a rocky start, losing four of his first seven.
That included a submission defeat to Conor McGregor’s protege James Gallagher in 2016.
But recently, Taylor has won his last four on the spin, not losing in three years, and recently beat Nate Diaz’s training partner Chris Avila.
The part-time actor, who even had a career as a STRIPPER before fighting, has boxed just once before, losing by split-decision to Donte Stubbs.
But he made a name for himself earlier in the year after calling out Paul to a sparring session, which was later set up.
And despite bad blood between the two initially, they formed a friendship and continue to train together now.
Taylor has been helping Paul in preparation for his fourth fight, against ex-UFC champion Woodley, 39.
He usually fights at 155lb, but will have to step up all the way to 180lb for his boxing match with Fury.

Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley: How YouTuber and out-of-form UFC star compare ahead of this week’s massive fight

JAKE PAUL and Tyron Woodley are set to go toe-to-toe in the boxing ring this week.YouTuber Paul, 24, holds a 3-0 professional record early in his career, while 39-year-old UFC star Woodley has lost his last four fights in the octagon.
How Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley compare ahead of their boxing match
Woodley called out Paul in April – but insisted he wanted any fight to be under MMA regulations.
But the pair will now instead face off in the boxing ring.
But how do Paul and Woodley compare ahead of their proposed fight?
Paul holds the edge in boxing, having fought – and won – three times in the ring.
Woodley has never boxed, but is streets ahead of his American rival in terms of fighting experience.
The veteran MMA star has been fighting in UFC since February 2009 and has a career record of 19-7-1 following a recent slump in form.

Jake Paul is cutting no corners with his diet

Woodley most-recently lost to Vicente Luque, following losses at the hands of Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman.
Meanwhile, Paul will go into the fight fresh from his quick-fire mauling of ex-MMA star Ben Askren, having already beaten former NBA star Nate Robinson and YouTuber AnEsonGib since turning pro.
Paul, standing at 6ft 2in, holds the height advantage over 5ft 9in Woodley, while boasting an extra stone in weight and additional two inches on his reach.
Despite that, Woodley should provide the sternest test of Paul’s fledgling career.
The Chosen One claimed the UFC welterweight belt at UFC 201 then defended it four times.

And he recently revealed his desire to ‘f***ing hit Paul’s face’ – although Woodley had initially hoped to fight in the octagon.
Woodley roared: “You had a lot to say in the locker room, let’s fight.
“I wanna hear what [Jake Paul] gotta say about it. You wanna fight me? He could fight me.
“I’ll fight in MMA, because I wanna elbow his ass. I don’t want no little boxing, the p**fy gloves.
“I wanna elbow, I wanna f***ing hit his face. I wanna almost break his arm and just let him out.
“So if his boy wants to fight me, he’s gonna have to come and see me in the cage.”

The blue touch paper for their fight was lit moments before Paul’s demolition of Woodley’s good friend Ben Askren in April.
The pair were involved in a heated back-and-forth in the dressing room that left Woodley fuming.
And their subsequent slanging match on social media has teed up the interesting grudge match, which, on paper, is the toughest fight of Paul’s young boxing career.

JAKE PAUL aimed insults at Floyd Mayweather as he called out the boxer for a ‘real’ professional fight. The Youtuber, 24, is preparing to take on UFC star Tyron Woodley on August 30 – his fourth professional boxing bout.
Jake Paul wants a professional fight against Floyd Mayweather
Mayweather fought Logan Paul in an exhibition bout in June
And Paul is keen to have a go at Mayweather next, but only if certain conditions are met.
Per USATODAY, he said: “If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen.
“But right now, my focus is doing real, professional fights. I’m not trying to do any exhibitions.
“So if he wants to do a real pro fight at a real weight, I’m down. But I don’t want to do money fights with an old guy.

The former world champion reportedly took home a purse of around £72million on that occasion, but was also left fuming at Jake Paul after the younger sibling stole his hat.
Paul has proven his knock-out power in his three fights so far, against fellow Youtuber AnEsonGib, ex-NBA star Nate Robinson and MMA grappler Ben Askren.
But he has never stepped into the ring against a proper pro boxer, let alone one as accomplished as former pound-for-pound king Mayweather.
