Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury – how feuding boxers’ records compare with both fighting on same card this weekend

JAKE PAUL and Tommy Fury will share the same ring this weekend – but in separate bouts for now. Love Island star Fury, the younger brother to heavyweight champion Tyson, faces Paul’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor in Cleveland.

Later in the night, his online rival and YouTube sensation headlines against ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley.
Fury has penned a two-fight deal with US powerhouse Showtime, who also promote Paul, meaning the two share the same card to build towards an expected fight of their own.
And here, SunSport runs down how their unbeaten records and boxing careers compare.
    Tommy Fury, 6-0
Fury, 22, debuted in December 2018 with much fanfare due to the popularity of his brother Tyson.
He beat Jevgenijs Andrejevs on his debut by points and then stopped Callum Ide four months later.
His career then took off completely after entering ITV’s hit reality TV show Love Island in the summer of 2019 as a 2-0 light-heavyweight.
Fury came out with now-girlfriend Molly-Mae as a star in his own right and returned to the ring with a knockout against Przemyslaw Binienda.
Juggling life as a celebrity and fighter proved hard to maintain as he then had just one bout in 2020, a win over Lithuanian Genadij Krajevskij.
But this year the Brit has twice fought, knocking out Scott Williams and then facing a test in Jordan Grant of four rounds.
Grant was beaten on points, but acted as Fury’s first opponent with a winning record and provided the step up which was needed.
Facing journeyman opposition is a regularity in most boxers’ early careers, but at 6-0 now is the time for Fury to be tested at a much higher level with MMA fighter Taylor, 32, promising to do so.

    Jake Paul, 3-0
Paul, 24, first started boxing in 2018 when he travelled to Manchester with his older brother Logan, 26, for a pair of exhibition bouts.
Logan drew with British YouTuber KSI, whose brother ‘Deji’ was beaten by Paul in five rounds.
It sparked Logan to have a rematch with KSI, 28, which he lost on points, but they controversially turned professional.
Paul followed suit and in January 2020 stopped KSI’s friend and fellow content creator ‘AnEsonGib’ in one round of his pro debut.
He then followed it up in November by brutally knocking out ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 37, in two rounds.
Yet to face an experienced fighter, Paul took his first step up in April against retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, 37, a renowned grappler.
It proved his biggest win to date as Askren was stopped in the first two minutes after a massive right hand.
Paul is now moving up the ladder further, by facing Woodley, 39, an accomplished wrestler later recognised for his KO power and overhand right.

Anthony Joshua could be ordered into fighting Daniel Dubois for WBA world title after Brit rival is stripped of belt

ANTHONY JOSHUA could soon be ordered to fight Daniel Dubois after the WBA banished their ‘interim’ titles. The governing body recently announced they would scrap the widely unpopular and largely meaningless secondary belts.

Among those effected were Dubois, 23, and Chris Eubank Jr, 31, who were both interim title holders.
The WBA are now instead set to elevate the stripped champions to mandatory challengers.
It means Dubois, or ‘Regular’ champion Trevor Bryan, 32, could find themselves ordered to fight for Joshua’s belt.
But both heavyweight contenders face a wait to be called to challenge AJ, with the WBA second in line.
Joshua’s last fight was against IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev, 40, in December which he won in nine rounds.
Right after, he was immediately ordered to face WBO No1 Oleksandr Usyk, 34, in a mandated defence, set for September 25 at Tottenham’s stadium.

The WBA is the next title then after for Joshua to defend, with Dubois or Bryan waiting in the wings.
AJ’s last WBA mandatory was against the recently-retired Alexander Povetkin, 40, in 2018.
All four governing bodies agreed to let Joshua, 31, and Tyson Fury, 32, swerve their mandatories in order to unify the belts.
And terms were all agreed for a first-ever, four-belt undisputed title decider on August 14 in Saudi Arabia.
But Fury failed in his attempt to walk away from a contacted trilogy bout with Deontay Wilder, 35, who won his right to an immediate rematch in arbitration.

It means Wilder, who drew to his rival in 2018 but was beaten in 2020, gets another crack at the Gypsy King on October 9.
And with Joshua fighting a month beforehand, he will eye the winner, and hope the governing bodies again agree to prioritise unifications over mandatories.
Joe Joyce, 35, who beat Dubois in November, is already AJ’s WBO mandatory, but with Usyk next in line, he will be made to wait even longer.

Watch Tommy Fury and Jake Paul row at heated press conference as YouTuber says they will only fight on six conditions

YOUTUBER Jake Paul and Love Island star Tommy Fury got in heated row during a press conference ahead of this month’s fight night.Paul, 24, has also outlined six conditions Fury, 22, must meet if the Brit wants a huge pay-per-view clash with the American in the future.

Paul dropped a huge hint at a press conference ahead of his fight with UFC star Tyron Woodley in Cleveland on August 29.
Fury, who is on the undercard for the boxing event, was also at the presser and exchanged some unfriendly words with his American adversary.
Paul told the press: “I’m already thinking about the next opponents. Why do you think this guy [Fury] is sitting behind me now?”
Fury was quick to respond, replying: “Your time is coming, pal. Don’t mention my name out of that garbage mouth of yours.”
But Paul had the last word, telling the Brit: “When you know what’s going to happen, it’s easy. This is an easy sport.”
Fury’s opponent on Saturday is unknown American Anthony Taylor and he, like Paul, is yet to fight anyone of note in his professional career.

But the YouTuber remains the bigger celeb and can command huge pay-per-view events, with Fury, the younger brother of WBC champ Tyson, needing to boost his profile before the two can meet.
Paul told Showtime: “When you are fighting with Jake Paul it has to make sense from a range of different points of view such as height and weight, experience, pay-per-view buys, notoriety, ability to sell a fight and timing for me.
“Yeah look it makes sense, it’s a huge fight with Tommy and it seems to be in the palm of both of our hands.

“We do have to go out and perform, and I want to see how the US crowd receives him and see if he has that star power the whole week.
“He doesn’t have the big pay-per-view numbers that the likes of Tyron Woodley has, no one has actually seen a Tommy Fury fight.
“I guess some people may have seen like the highlights and stuff, but it isn’t converting into pay-per-view buys.”

    What has been said?
Paul: “Tyron’s a good striker. He’s known for knocking people out. But I think when I beat Tyron, people have to put respect on my name.
“But that’s not what I’m here for, to be honest. I already know how good I am. I know that this is going to be another easy fight.
“That’s why Showtime is in business with me. You’re looking at the future of boxing.”
Woodley: “Easiest fight of my career and biggest purse of my career all in one night.
“Basically, they brought me in to take out the trash. Can’t wait to shut this b***h up.
“This is getting done for the culture, the whole MMA/boxing community, to rid this guy of combat sports.”

WBC world champ Jermall Charlo arrested after allegedly stealing from waitress as boxer hands himself in to cops

WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo has handed himself in to police after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The 31-year-old, who is 32-0 as a professional, allegedly assaulted a waiter in San Antonio on July 16 and took off with her tips after a card he tried to use to pay for a tab was declined numerous times.

The warrant then states that Charlo took two waiter books, removed his ID from one and cash from the other, before allegedly forcing his way out of the building and taking off in a limousine bus.
The waitress is said to have suffered a lower leg injury as a result of one of Charlo’s group stepping on her as they left.
Charlo’s attorney Kent A. Schaffer sent an email to KSAT News which read: “I represent Jermall Charlo and I just saw your story regarding his case.
“I want to make clear that Jermall stole no money from anyone at the club and made no threats toward anyone. When they ran his card it was declined and he then received a fraud alert from Chase Bank asking if he had made the charge.
“He responded yes and they told him to have the charge submitted again. The waitress went to run it again and came back saying she could not find the card. Jermall was upset that his card was missing since it was a debit card tied to an account with a substantial amount of money.
“The waitress had his license sticking out of a portfolio and he took his license back saying that he didn’t want her to lose that too. By this time, many club employees were gathering in the hallway so Jermall’s handlers wanted to get him out of the club before trouble started and a club employee walked Jermall out to his car.

“Hours later Jermall’s assistant made contact with the club to give them another credit card number but the club refused to accept it.
“Over the last few weeks we have talked to the police, prosecutors and the club owner and although the club owner expressed his desire to drop the charges the officer insisted on filing charges to try to embarrass Jermall.
“At no time did he rob anyone or take any property other than his own.”
Charlo was in San Antonio to watch his brother Jermell’s world title fight against Brian Castano, which ended in a split decision draw.
Jermall’s last fight came back in June when he defeated Juan Macias Montiel by unanimous decision.

Charles Martin launches verbal KO blow on Dillian Whyte and accused Brit of ‘running back home’ instead of settling feud

CHARLES MARTIN has mocked Dillian Whyte after the Brixton boxer ended his interest in fighting the American.Whyte, 33, had been tipped to fight Martin in America by his own promoter Eddie Hearn.
Charles Martin mocked Dillian Whyte and is confident he would have knocked him out
Eddie Hearn had initially planned for Whyte to fight Martin in the USA
In July Hearn said: “We’re also talking to Luis DeCuba about… a Charles Martin fight for Dillian Whyte, which could come after his August/September fight.”
But according to Sky Sports, the Whyte’s fights will take place in the UK.
That has sparked the verbal attack from Martin, 35, who did not hold back in ridiculing the Brit.
He said: “Dillian Whyte is running back home to the UK before he even steps foot in America.
“Once Dillian found out that I was going to welcome him to America with a nice KO loss, he turned the plane around and flew home. That’s the truth. Ain’t nothing here in America for Dillian but concussions.
“I don’t blame him, running home to safety. It makes sense for him. He knew what was coming for him.

“Dillian did the right thing, because he’s been looking kinda shaky in his last couple of fights. I don’t think his chin is there anymore. He knows it too, so it’s a good thing he bought a round trip ticket.
“Eddie knows best. He thought why get my second-best heavyweight knocked out by Charles in America. I understand, Eddie probably don’t believe in him either.
“Next time you’re coming to conquer America, at least get off the plane!”
It is not the first time Matin has bashed Whyte, previously labelling the Brit an “easy fight”.
He plans to knockout Whyte to secure another title shot against Anthony Joshua, who he was knocked out by in 2016.

Both of those bouts against Steven Ward and Simon Vallily have ended in draws
The 32-year-old 6ft 9in man mountain was scheduled to face Briton Eddie Hall in a grudge match in September.
And in preparation for the bout Bjornsson has cut an incredible 110lbs since retiring from his strongman career a year ago.
