Josh Warrington fight with Mauricio Lara ends in a DRAW after headbutt causes nasty cut over Mexican’s left eye

JOSH WARRINGTON’S shot at redemption turned into a bloody disaster after he headed-butted his way to a technical draw with Maurico Lara. The 30-year-old father-of-two took a tune-up fight with the unknown Mexican last February and suffered the first brutal defeat of his career.
Josh Warrington’s rematch with Mauricio Lara ended in a draw
Warrington felt he was in a strong position to win the fight
But he jumped back into the fire and got burned when referee Steve Gray cancelled the contest after just six minutes when a clash of heads left Lara with a horrible gash.
Warrington said: “All these people wanted to see me get redemption tonight.
“I thought I opened him up with a punch in the first round but a clash of styles, my head hit him.
    “I’m absolutely gutted.”
In a stark and silent Wembley arena, in the midst of the miserable lockdown, the 9st ace was dropped heavily in the fourth before somehow surviving until a round nine KO.
For weeks the former IBF 9st king could not leave the house and was too embarrassed to go shopping with his wife.

Lara suffered a nasty gash above his left eye
A pep-talk video call with Anthony Joshua – who suffered a similar shock against Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 – got Warrington back into the gym.
And the Elland Road regular’s Yorkshire pride convinced him to take an instant rematch with the 23-year-old banger, when he could have plotted his back toward a world title along a far easier path.
Instead, Lara peeled off his poncho and howled into the Headingley crowd, happy to be the most unpopular man in the white-hot atmosphere.
Warrington has always played up to his feather-fisted reputation – having only 7 KOs in 30 wins – but his round-one right hands looked mean and capable.
But the local legend got carried away in the second and smashed his forehead into Lara’s eyebrow, with a gash quickly peeling open and oozing.
The visitor’s corner tried to smother it in Vaseline to stem the flow but the referee had no choice but to call it off and tarnish both records with a draw as fewer than four rounds had been contested to score.
“I wanted to put on a performance and that was always going to come at some point, I felt I was really getting into it,” added Warrington.
“I know my promoter Eddie Hearn might want to look in other directions but I need to get this slate cleared, I need to get the W over this man.
“Especially after the second round I sat down and said ‘this is mine for the taking’, I could see it being an early night but not in this kind of scenario.
“Weeks and weeks of promotion, all of these people came out and I can only say sorry, we will have our redemption.”

Katie Taylor impressively defends lightweight crown against Jennifer Han in her favourite football city of Leeds

KATIE TAYLOR finally became a Leeds hero by defending her undisputed lightweight crown in her favourite footballing city. The 34-year-old Irish legend and ex-international footballer was a Leeds United superfan growing up, getting new shirts every Christmas and admiring hardnuts like Lee Bowyer and Alan Smith.
Katie Taylor dominated Jennifer Han throughout to secure a points win
And she now has a Yorkshire win under her belt after outpointing tough American supermum Jennifer Han at Headingley.
On Josh Warrington’s undercard, Taylor dropped Han in round eight before the judges gave the London 2012 golden girl a unanimous decision to take her to 19-0.
The precision punching and perfect footwork that made Taylor an amateur boxing icon were back on show for the first two rounds as Han, who only had her second son six months ago, tried and failed to land.
Taylor said: “Every fight is a tough fight at this level, I knew that Jennifer was going to be a big challenge.
“I was hoping for a stoppage tonight but she was very good at surviving for the whole fight.
“She was very crafty, very slippery in there, but 100-89 shutout, it can’t get much better than that.”

Now Taylor is eyeing the big fights after swatting aside Han
Han, in only her second fight since February 2018, brushed off the cobwebs and got going in the third by throwing a few uppercuts that at least kept the Bray icon at bay.
With the two-minute rounds racing by with little action, the biggest noise of the night erupted when Warrington’s headline opponent Mauricio Lara appeared on the giant screens and was booed.
With the row-loving Yorkshire crowd growing restless and turning on each other in a few small pockets, Taylor did land a left hook that drew the attention back to the ring in the sixth.
Taylor looked on course for her sixth consecutive points win when Han was suddenly dropped in round eight by a sweet shot, but she beat the count and heard the bell.
The latest win of her glittering career should secure Taylor a female super-fight, with seven-weight champ Amanda Serrano or undisputed welter queen Jessica McCaskill next.
Taylor promises to finish her career as an unbeaten, undisputed champion at multiple weights.
“I’m willing to fight anyone at any weight category, I want the big fights,” Taylor added.
“I want mega-fights, I want to be involved in the biggest possible fights in women’s boxing.
“I’m fairly certain I will end my career undefeated, as a multiple-weight undisputed champion.”

Conor Benn beats Adrian Granados in unanimous decision but endures frustrating night against stubborn opponent

CONOR BENN notched up 10 frustrating but important rounds to his fledgling career with a points win over Adrian Granados. The rapidly rising 24-year-old put on a jabbing masterclass to outpoint Sebastian Formella in November and blitzed Samuel Vargas in one April round.

And he was caught between the two performances on Josh Warrington’s Leeds undercard as he chased and scythed at the respected 32-year-old American before winning a unanimous decision.
Granados had lost eight times before his visit to Headingley, but only stopped once by the brilliant Danny Garcia, and Benn’s persistence earned him fair scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93.
Benn, the now 19-0 son of ring legend Nigel admitted: “It was frustrating because I wanted to put on a great fight for the fans.”
The pair looked set to start the fight well before the first bell when they met in a neutral corner during their introductions and locked eyes.
Benn continued his warm-up by leaping into the Leeds air and, when he landed, Granados was right there for when he landed.
The referee sussed the simmering stare-down and separated them early before he got things officially going.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET £60 IN FREE BETS ON ANY WORLD CUP QUALIFIER WITH BETFAIR
Granados hurried around the edge of the ring for most of the opener and when he had his chin grazed by one right hand, he laughed it off into the crowd.
Benn was too eager to please the buzzing Yorkshire crowd and wasted a few wild shots up into the night air.
The tattooed Essex ace got his jab going better in the second but Granados’ fleeting trip to the deck was rightly ruled a slip.
Benn started the third poorly, missing so wildly with a shot that he did a full 360 degree spin in the air like a ballerina.
But he finished far better, cutting the ring down with more purpose and clipping Granados against the ropes.

Grandaos appeared more game from the halfway point, throwing more shots and fighting in the pocket, perhaps in the hope Benn was fading after throwing so many early bombs.
Benn was the victim of showboating in the seventh when a couple of his clumsy right hands were smiled off into the crowd by Granados.
And the raucous Leeds crowd, that had filled the town centre with Warrington songs from opening time, were silenced by Grandados’ excellent defence by round eight.
Round ten looked like being the worst of the night but then Granados suddenly mimed like a matador and Benn rushed him like a raging bull.
The pair swapped a few shots and the Brit begged him to stand still and settle the score, in the centre of the ring, but the bell went to end the latest step in his education.

Eddie Hearn rubbishes claims ‘absolute unit’ Anthony Joshua is looking ‘small’ after trimming down for Usyk fight

EDDIE HEARN has rubbished suggestions Anthony Joshua is looking ‘small’ ahead of his clash with Oleksandr Usyk. The Watford warrior is sporting a much trimmer physique for his unified heavyweight title defence against the Ukrainian at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 25.

But promoter Eddie Hearn insists the unified heavyweight champion is still ‘massive’ as everCredit: INSTAGRAM@EDDIEHEARN
But Matchroom boxing chief Hearn has dismissed suggestions AJ has lost too much size, telling Pep Talk UK: “He doesn’t look small to me.
“He looks massive. He looks like an absolute unit, to be honest with you.
“His legs look huge, and powerful, and fast. With them, it’s never a case of, ‘I’m going to drop weight. What am I weighing today?’”
Hearn says Joshua’s smaller frame is down to him moving away from heavy lifting and focusing more on the fundamentals of the sweet science.
He continued: “The difference in the training over the years [for Joshua] is that he’s gone from a guy that was lifting weights and doing a lot of power stuff to a guy that is boxing.
“More sparring, more time on your feet, more time in the ring, more time on the pads, more rounds on the bag.

“That’s what’s going to get you fitness over time.
“Before, he was extremely explosive, but after the tank was empty, how do you go through those championship rounds?
“When he boxed Dillian [Whyte], when he boxed [Charles] Martin, and when he boxed [Wladimir] Klitschko, he didn’t really know what he was doing.
“He was just big, strong, and tough with attributes and good fundamentals.
“Now he’s well-rounded and knows and understands the game.
“That makes you so much more difficult to beat.”
Joshua has shed some of his trademark muscles in order to be ready to go 12 hard rounds with the smaller and fleet-footed Usyk.
He doesn’t look small to me. He looks massive.Eddie Hearn on Anthony Joshua’s trimmer physique
He told Sky Sports: “I do look at my weight but I’m not trying to make weight because I’m a heavyweight.
“I tailor my training. I am getting a lot of experience, I’ve been fighting good fighters for a long time, I’ve studied them and learned about their training camps.
“I’ve learned how to condition my body for specific fights. I’m looking trim for this fight.
“I’m fighting a guy who is a 12-round fighter. So it would be silly of me to go in there bulky with my muscles screaming for oxygen.
“I’ve been training like a 15-round fighter in this camp. I will be well-conditioned to fight. That is key.
“What happens when I train that way? My body adapts and takes its natural form. This is the form it has taken.”
AJ is relishing his Tottenham tussle with his fellow London 2012 Olympian, saying: “The date is set and we are fully locked in.

“September 25, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, I put it all on the line again and it’s time to defend my crown.
“We are two Olympic gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges.
“The stadium is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe-inspiring venue.”

Joshua regularly shares photos from inside the gym, with his weight-lifting and core exercises pretty impressive.
But he uploaded a video and snaps of him out on a run to Instagram, showing cardio remains an important part of the routine.
Joshua revealed his intention to reduce the size of his frame last month, telling Sky Sports: “I do look at my weight but I’m not trying to make weight because I’m a heavyweight.
“I tailor my training. I am getting a lot of experience, I’ve been fighting good fighters for a long time, I’ve studied them and learned about their training camps.

Joshua has been tipped to knock out former undisputed cruiserweight king Usyk, who many believe is an undersized heavyweight.

But AJ currently doesn’t have a fight-ending sequence in mind, saying: “I was watching [Evander] Holyfield and [James] Quick Tillis today and he was saying how he was gonna come and bring war.
“And if he wins, he’s gonna fight Tyson and rematch him. And he lost, I think it was in the fifth round.

Evander Holyfield, 58, to make ring return after 10 years out as he replaces Covid-hit Oscar De La Hoya against Belfort

EVANDER HOLYFIELD is set to make a stunning return to the ring next weekend against former UFC light-heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.Boxing hall-of-famer Oscar De La Hoya was due to face Belfort in the main event of Triller’s latest Fight Club card before he contracted Covid.

And in a bid to save the card, the promotion has turned to former undisputed cruiserweight king Holyfield.
Holyfield, 58, wasn’t cleared to compete by the California State Athletic Commission.
And the CSAC’s refusal to license The Real Deal has led to the entire event being moved to Florida.
It’s understood Holyfield was not denied a license due to his age but because of the commission’s lack of time to appropriately assess the former heavyweight champion.
Holyfield’s clash with Belfort will be his first outing in over ten years, the last of which saw him register a tenth-round TKO victory over former IBO heavyweight champ Brian Nielsen.
The 1984 Olympian has, however, been training to return to the ring for the last 16 months.

Holyfield was due to face Kevin McBride on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez’s eagerly-anticipated clash with George Kambosos Jr.
But the card was scrapped after unified lightweight champion Lopez tested positive for Covid.
A gutted De La Hoya announced his withdrawal from his clash with Belfort on Twitter on Friday, writing: “Wanted you to hear directly from me that despite being fully vaccinated, I have contracted Covid and am not going to be able to fight next weekend.
“Preparing for this comeback has been everything to me over the last months.
“And I want to thank everyone for their tremendous support.
“I am currently in the hospital getting treatment and am confident I will be back in the ring before the year is up.
De La Hoya spoke from his hospital bed

“God bless everyone and stay safe.”
