David Haye snubs Mike Tyson in top five heavyweights of all time over mental strength claim and details sad decline

DAVID HAYE doesn’t rank Mike Tyson in his top five heavyweights of all time because of questions over his mental strength.Former two-division champion Haye was discussing the night Tyson beat Michael Spinks in 1988 by a 91-second knockout.
David Haye says Mike Tyson cannot be considered in the top five heavyweights of all time
Michael Spinks was beaten by Tyson in 1988
But the 40-year-old believes Iron Mike’s inability to overcome adversity during fights he was losing is a reason why he does not consider him among the five greatest heavyweights ever.
Haye said on the BBC’s Costello and Bunce podcast: “How many fights did he have where he was behind on points? Where he got put down, hurt and came back, that’s the question.
“The moment he started to lose or it started to get tough, it seemed to go the other way.
“Many fighters – Holyfield, Lennox Lewis – they’ve all had tough fights where they are on the brink of losing and found a way to win, I’ve never seen that with Tyson.
“I find it hard to say someone’s in the top five of all time if they’ve never had a fight which they were losing and they came back to win.”
Tyson, 55, still reigns as the youngest heavyweight champion of all time after he thrashed Trevor Berbick in 1986 but did so after the death of his mentor Cus D’Amato, who left Kevin Rooney to corner him.
But four years later, having succumbed to distractions outside the ring, the American was upset by James ‘Buster’ Douglas in Tokyo, losing for the first time.

Tyson would then spend three years in prison after being convicted of rape in 1992 before making his boxing comeback in 1995.
He won the world titles back again in 1996 but in the same year lost to Evander Holyfield and infamously bit his ear in their rematch a year later.
The knockout artist retired in 2005 after losing to Kevin McBride and left the sport with a record of 50–6 but shocked fans after this month announcing plans to make a comeback to compete in exhibition bouts for charity.
However, he returned to the ring when he faced off against Roy Jones Jr last year.
But Haye argues if the hotheaded puncher was guided correctly throughout his career, he could have been the greatest heavyweight of all time.
He explained: “If he would have had the same team around him which got him into that shape and continued to have the fights that he had, he would’ve grown and become a better version than that.

“If he’s 21 there, he’s a baby in boxing terms. He was only going to get better and better. But what happened was, he peaked at 21 and didn’t get better, he got worse every fight.
“He did less training, less sparring, had less discipline, more money, different women. He got worse and worse until he lost.
“If he didn’t fall off, and had Rooney in his corner and the same team and had people looking after him, investing his money correctly, looking out for him, he could’ve been No1, without a doubt.”

Oscar Valdez defends world title with controversial win over Robson Conceicao but punch stats show he was outboxed

OSCAR VALDEZ defended his 130-pound super-featherweight world title with a controversial unanimous decision victory over Robson Conceicao. The Mexican moved to 30-0 in Arizona after the three judges scored the bout 117-110, 115-112, 115-112 in his favour.

But the judges did not tell the whole story as the punch stats from the fight pointed in the challenger’s favour.
According to ESPN, Conceicao outlanded WBC champion Valdez by 141 shots to 83.
The Brazilian, who came into the clash with a record of 16-0, also threw 186 more punches across the 12 rounds.
But Valdez, whose fight went ahead despite him testing positive for the banned substance phentermine last month, still accused his opponent of ‘running’ in his post-fight interview.
He said: “I’ve been through enough this week, man. It makes the fight complicated when someone is trying to run the whole fight.
“If he wants to run? You can’t win a fight running like that.

“We all want the winner of Shakur Stevenson and Jamel Herring. Let’s do it.”
Valdez has come under intense scrutiny after his positive drugs test.
But in a recent interview with ESPN, he denied any wrongdoing and even suggested the findings may have been the result of drinking herbal tea.
He explained: “We’ve literally never done anything different as far as taking other supplements.
“You know, very simple supplements — vitamin C, vitamin B12 and all those normal vitamins that everybody should take.
“The only difference is that I’ve taken herbal tea. That’s the reason why I would think that could possibly be, but I’m still not 100 per cent how that got into my body.
“I gave up coffee a while back and I started taking more herbal teas.
“And just trying different types of teas was the only difference that I’ve done in this training camp, and that’s one of the reasons why I think that’s possibly it.”

The 30-year-old Mexican also suggested that some of his vitamins could have been ‘contaminated’.
Valdez described the situation as ’embarrassing and humiliating’ and says he has been left ‘hurt’.
He also insists he is ‘telling the truth’ and has always ‘been proud to be a clean fighter’.

David Haye’s fight against Joe Fournier will be a professional bout NOT exhibition and will count on record

DAVID HAYE will make his comeback against Joe Fournier in a professional fight that WILL count on his pro record. The British boxing legend, 28-4, retired in 2018 after consecutive defeats against Tony Bellew.

And having been plagued by injuries throughout his career, Haye appeared happy on the sidelines as a manager and promoter.
But according to ESPN, the former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion is back.
And he will return over eight-rounds against businessman Fournier on September 11 in a pro sanctioned bout, NOT an exhibition, the report adds.
Interestingly, the pair are good friends, and Fournier fought on cards promoted by Haye having signed with Hayemaker Promotions in 2016.
They were even on holiday together in July on the Greek island of Mykonos.
Entrepreneur Fournier, 38, who is officially unbeaten in ten fights, returned to the ring after five years out in April under Triller’s ‘Fight Club’ banner.

He knocked out musician Reykon, 34, on Jake Paul’s undercard and afterwards called out the YouTuber.
Haye even tried to organise a fight for the nightclub tycoon against Paul, having had a prior relationship with trainer BJ Flores.
So it comes out of left field that the former two-weight champion has decided to face Fournier.
Headlining the night is Evander Holyfield, 58, who makes his comeback 10 years after last fighting.
Holyfield faces former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, 44, in Florida after the fight was forced to be moved from Los Angeles.
The heavyweight legend replaced Oscar De La Hoya, 48, who pulled out with coronavirus.
But the California State Athletic Commission refused to licence Holyfield, but amazingly Florida had no such problems.
The bout is also a prof one, contested over eight, two-minute rounds, opposed to the usual three.
UFC legends Anderson Silva, 46, and Tito Ortiz, 44 – both ex-UFC champions – will also meet on the card.
Triller burst onto the boxing scene last November, when Mike Tyson, 55, come out of retirement in an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr, 52.
Paul has also twice featured on the social media app’s promotion, beating ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, 37, on Tyson’s undercard and then knocking out retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, 37, last April. More

    Andy Vences vs Jono Carroll
    David Haye vs Joe Fournier

David Haye hung up his gloves in 2018 after a glittering career
    What they said
Holyfield has previously spoken of his dream to return to boxing, and now he’ll get his chance against Belfort.
“Where an opportunity is available, I like to make the best out of what I have. I believe if I fought Mike [Tyson] the fight will generate $200million,” he told SunSport back in May.
“It will be the biggest fight there is. That’s the honest truth. I think Mike has my message already. If he is going to do it he is, if not then he’s not.
“It’s a decision he has to make now and we both have to be in an agreement.”
Before the De La Hoya fight was cancelled, Belfort had been planning for a clash with Holyfield in December, but will get that opportunity three months early.
“After September, December is me vs Holyfield. Get ready for the crossover!” He said.
We are taking over, Triller is bringing the fights. A huge dream.” More

The online personality’s last bout was the much-anticipated Miami exhibition with Mayweather, 44, as he survived all eight rounds to take it the distance.
Paul, 26, faced, and technically avoided defeat, against the one of the best and most lucrative boxers of all time – although it was just an exhibition bout.
But speaking at his brother Jake’s win against Tyron Woodley, Paul sought to embellish his achievement somewhat.
Asked if he plans to return to the ring, Paul said: “I retired Floyd Mayweather. The dude’s on my highlight reel. I busted his ear drum.
“So yeah, I’m going to be back in a big f***ing way.
“I’m just on some s*** right now, I’m doing something else but I’ll be back.”

Speaking just before the bold statement, Paul said he couldn’t step away from the fight game describing fighters as ‘modern day gladiators’.
He has only had one pro fight in the past.
His rematch against British YouTuber KSI saw him lose after the first non-professional bout between the pair was called a draw.
But Paul went on to confirm he will fight professonally again.
He said: “Come on, baby. Yeah, of course, I have to. This is the coolest thing on the planet.
“You think about the Roman Colosseum, when you watch the gladiators fight to the death. Look around.
“My brother filled this arena up in Cleveland, Ohio, his home city. It’s the coolest thing anyone could ever ask for.

“I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Fighters, bro, modern day gladiators. There is no more dangerous athlete.
“When the fighter walks in the room, everyone feels it. He’s got a presence. And it’s cool, I love it.
“I love the sport, I love entertaining. And honestly, I’m f***ing good.”

Usyk is ‘best boxer Anthony Joshua will EVER face in his career’, says Bellew.. despite Tyson Fury waiting in wings

OLEKSANDR USYK is the ‘best boxer Anthony Joshua will ever face’, according to the Ukrainian’s former opponent Tony Bellew. The ex-undisputed cruiserweight champion will challenge unified heavyweight king AJ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 25.
Usyk will bid to hand Joshua his second pro defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Joshua is looking to retain his three world heavyweight titlesCredit: Instagram @anthonyjoshua
And Bellew, who was stopped by Usyk in the eighth round of their fight back in November 2018, has warned Joshua about the incredible skills the 18-0 man possesses.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “This will be the best boxer Anthony Joshua will ever face in his career.
“When it comes to natural, pure boxing, Oleksandr Usyk is the most natural boxer Anthony Joshua will ever face. He is unbelievable at what he does.”
After beating Bellew three years ago, Usyk moved up to heavyweight but has fought on just two occasions since then.
After a routine win against American Chazz Witherspoon, he then had his first real test in the blue-riband division against the all-action Derek Chisora.
And while he had to overcome some tough moments, Usyk secured a unanimous decision victory.

Along with the win, he retained his WBO mandatory slot for Joshua’s belt and is now receiving his opportunity.
But Bellew believes the AJ fight could well be a step too far for Usyk.
“He [Usyk] is not a true heavyweight,” Bellew added. “Everyone keeps going on, yes he is a cruiserweight, but he is the greatest cruiserweight who has ever put on gloves.
“So he does come with an amazing skill set, but I just think weight divisions exist in boxing for a reason.
“Come rounds seven, eight and nine, he is going to find out why he is not a true heavyweight.
“I think Anthony Joshua’s speed, power and perseverance will be what catches up with Oleksandr Usyk.

“I wish he would stop fighting my friends because I want to support him! I’m a huge admirer of him and I have so much respect for the boy, but he just keeps fighting my friends so I can’t support him.”
If AJ gets the job done, he will look to set up an undisputed clash against fellow Brit Tyson Fury, who holds the WBC strap.
That is providing Fury can get past Deontay Wilder in their trilogy clash on October 9.

Jake Paul’s coach gives green light for Tommy Fury fight and admits he ‘didn’t expect too much’ from Anthony Taylor bout

JAKE PAUL has been given the green light to fight Tommy Fury next by his coach BJ Flores. And former cruiserweight contender Flores admitted he ‘didn’t expect too much’ from Fury’s recent win over Paul’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor.

The 2019 Love Island star beat Taylor over four rounds in late August, the night Paul claimed victory over ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley.
It set Fury, 22, and the YouTuber, 24, up for a potential fight next and Flores revealed he has already given his approval.
He told The Mirror: “I didn’t expect much out of Tommy to be honest.
“Anthony can make people look bad, and look he didn’t do enough to win rounds but he made it competitive and I didn’t really expect much from Tommy anyway.
“Everybody’s on Tommy’s nuts but I didn’t expect too much from him, he didn’t have the amateur career and it’s tough to go out there and perform.
“It’s not easy and people don’t realise how tough it is. He could still be a potential opponent, he’s somebody we could definitely fight, we’ll see.

“We’ll see what happens, I’ll let Nakisa [Bidarian, Paul’s manager] work on that, I let him handle that side of things.
“We talk about it, but he comes up with better ideas than I do.”
Fury moved to 7-0 with his win over Taylor while Paul went to 4-0 with the biggest victory of his career.
It added to KO wins over online rival ‘AnEsonGib’, ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 37, and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, also 37, previously.
Talks between Fury and Paul are believed to be underway and Flores revealed training could start as early as next week.
He said: “He’s already ready to come back. This guy is a serious kid, trust me, he’s very, very serious.
“He won’t take that much time off. The guy is obsessed, he loves boxing.
“He won’t take much time off at all, he’ll want to be back sooner than [next year], and we really need to.

“We’ve got a lot of momentum right now, a lot of things we can improve on and work on, we just need to get back to the drawing board.
“It’s obviously a work in progress, so we need to keep working and stay focused, that’s kind of our mentality in our camp.
“We’re always getting better, we’re always improving, and we don’t feel like we can afford to take months off and sit around.”
