Tyson Fury was first knocked down by unknown Neven Pajkic, who claims world champ has an ‘ugly face’

TYSON FURY’S undefeated record almost ended when he was just 22 after he was knocked down by an unknown Canadian. The Gypsy King, who faces a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder, has been handed numerous tough tests along the way.
Tyson Fury was floored to the canvas for the first time by Neven PajkicCredit: Rex Features
One of the most notable came in 2011 when Fury took on Canadian rival Neven Pajkic for the Commonwealth heavyweight title.
Fury had brushed aside 16 opponents as a professional before his bout with Pajkic but was given a real wake-up call in Manchester in front of his own fans.
The now 44-year-old is known as the first man to knock Fury down to the canvas when he caught him with a right hook in the second round.
After the build-up in which Pajkic described Fury as “having an ugly face”, he reminisced to Sky Sports: “I only cracked him with 30 per cent.
“I didn’t expect him to go down. I practised the right hand, left hook. To my surprise, he fell after the first punch.
“I hoped he would be groggy with the right hand then I would finish him off with the left hook.
“The right hand was supposed to be a set-up. I wish he hadn’t gone down because the left hook was coming and would have put him out.
I only cracked him with 30 percent.Neven Pajkic
“Fury fought a guy I had beaten, Nicolai Firtha. A tough guy.
“That fight told me everything I needed to know. Guys who study their opponents? I get it. But it’s a dog-fight, that’s it. I did what I always did – head down, move forwards, swing.
“With the same punch that I dropped him with. I knew that. And I practised that punch.”
Fury would get back on his feet before getting his revenge in the third round when he knocked out his opponent.
Pajkic then realised at that moment he was fighting a future champion.
He added: “He overcame adversity on that night and showed his championship mentality.”
Fury’s most famous comeback came against Deontay Wilder when he somehow managed to climb up from the canvas after brutally being floored in their first fight to salvage a controversial draw.
He would have to wait 14 months to land his rematch with the American before being crowned WBC Champ.
And Pajkic says his will to get back up and fight separates him from the rest of the division.

He added: “There is no man that can’t go down. If 250lbs cracks you on the chin, you are going down.
“Fury keeps his hands down often and drops the left shoulder when he jabs, so he leaves himself exposed more than he should.
“But going down? He has a will to come back up. That’s what makes him different.”

Anthony Joshua says Tyson Fury ‘exposed’ and ‘annihilated’ Deontay Wilder as American ‘only has one weapon’

TYSON FURY “annihilated” Deontay Wilder because the American is too one dimensional. That’s the opinion of Fury’s fellow Brit and heavyweight world champ Anthony Joshua who was not surprised by what happened in their rematch.

Back in 2020, Fury battered Wilder all around the ring before the Bronze Bomber’s team pulled him out.
Despite Wilder’s protestations to his corner, it was clear to everyone watching that he was being totally outclassed.
Now Joshua, who is continuing to face calls to thrash out a unification fight with Fury, believes Wilder’s weaknesses were exploited in brutal style.
When you go to war, you can’t have one weapon in your arsenal, which was his right handAnthony Joshua on Wilder
Speaking to Sky Sports, the WBA, WBO and IBF champ said: “I believed Tyson Fury could potentially do what he done.
“I just felt like, Deontay Wilder is a formidable ex-champion and has a chance to come back, but I just knew that when he gets to the top level, it will be difficult, because it’s one thing getting there and it’s another thing staying there.
“We’ve seen in some of his fights, it’s been difficult for him and then he lands his punch and he’s been victorious.
“But I always believe that when you go to war, you can’t have one weapon in your arsenal, which was his right hand.
“Once that was taken away from him, which Fury did, I’m not going to go into tactics, but he was able to annihilate Wilder and expose him for some of his weaknesses.
“Fury did a great job tactically and I’m looking forward to their rematch.”
SunSport reported that AJ would jump into an undisputed decider with Fury if the Gypsy King’s camp can kill off their respective upcoming bouts.
Joshua will next fight Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.

UFC chief Dana White shuts down Jake Paul vs Jorge Masvidal and tells YouTuber to fight someone ‘your own size’

UFC president Dana White has told Jake Paul to forget about facing Jorge Masvidal and to ‘fight somebody your own size’.The Problem Child has been angling for a fight with the UFC’s BMF after learning he’d tipped Tyron Woodley to win their boxing match.

But UFC chief Dana White has no intention of allowing Gamebred to fight the former Disney starCredit: Getty
But UFC bigwig White has no intention of allowing the under-contract Gamebred to enter the boxing world to take on the younger Paul brother.
He told the Australian Daily Telegraph: “Come on, Masvidal is 170 pounds. He likes 170 pounders. Go fight somebody your own size.”
White would like to see the former Disney star lock horns with ex-UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who is 2-0 as a boxer since being released by the promotion last November.
He continued: “Anderson Silva is not in contract, he’s 46 years old, that’s the age group you love to fight, and he’s your size, and he’s actually winning fights.
“If you look at Jake Paul’s history, Jake Paul either fights basketball players who have never fought, or he wants to fight washed-up older guys who haven’t fought in years.
“Anderson Silva has actually been boxing, he’s won some fights, he’s 46 years old, and he’s in your weight class. There you go, that’s a no brainer, fight Anderson Silva.”

Despite there being cash to be made with a Paul vs Masvidal PPV, White is refusing to change his stance on the fight.
He said: “You’re not gonna fight 170-pound Jorge Masvidal who’s ranked top 10 in the world.
“No. He fights here, he’s under contract with us. Go f*****g fight somebody your own size.
“He just fought Tyron Woodley. Tyron Woodley is 40 years old, hasn’t won a fight in three years, hasn’t knocked somebody out in his weight class in five years.
“That’s who Jake Paul wants to fight, and he barely got out of that fight.
You’re not gonna fight 170-pound Jorge Masvidal who’s ranked top 10 in the worldDana White’s thoughts on Jake Paul fighting Jorge Masvidal
“He barely won that one. Now you want to fight a guy who’s ranked in the top 10, that weighs 170 pounds, is still relevant in the fighting world when you have Anderson who’s not under contract with anybody and has just won two boxing matches.
“There you go. You’re welcome. I just made your next boxing match for you, but I bet you don’t see that one happening. Wanna bet?”
Paul, 24, registered a split decision victory over former UFC welterweight king Woodley in his last outing in August.
The social media star agreed to a rematch with The Chosen One on the condition he honoured their pre-fight bet and got ‘I love Jake Paul’ tattooed on his skin.
    Jake Paul’s boxing ‘hit-list’
But he’s since moved on the fight, telling ESPN: “I’m over it.
“I’m leaving Tyron in the past.
“He didn’t live up to the bet — he didn’t get the tattoo. So, the rematch just doesn’t make sense anymore.”

    TALE OF THE TAPE
Just a reminder of how Eddie Hall and Hafthor Bjornsson stack up ahead of their grudge match.

    JAW TAKER
Eddie Hall is champing at the bit to share the ring with Hafthor Bjornsson, so much so has vowed to shatter the Icelandic giant’s jaw.
He told Men’s Health UK: “In the beginning, I think everyone had Thor as the favourite because he’s got the reach and height advantage.
    “I’m 6ft 2.5in and he’s 6ft 9in, but I think people are now gauging how seriously I’m taking this.
“I’m putting my heart and soul into this fight and I don’t do anything 99%. It’s 100% or nothing.
“I think it’s safe to say the public is starting to get that feeling that I’m taking this very seriously indeed and that Thor is going to get a broken jaw.”

WHY THE HATRED BETWEEN THOR AND EDDIE?
The rivalry between the pair stems from Eddie Hall’s World’s Strongest Man triumph in 2017 – after which Hafthor Bjornsson claimed the Brit cheated in the Viking press portion of the competition.
Hall said of Thor’s comments: ”
This is a quote from Hafthor Bjornsson: ‘I was robbed.’
“For the last three years, instead of answering questions about how I defeated some of the greatest strongmen to ever live, Hafthor included, instead I had people questioning whether I really won it or not.
“Hafthor Bjornsson and his entourage have been smearing my title and the referee Colin Bryce’s reputation for the last three years.
“Because he was the Mountain from Game of Thrones, a huge TV star, people listened and people believed him.
“I’ve had enough of the doubters saying he was robbed and how hard done by he was.
“So today, I came across a video that ends all the smack talk and silences the doubters.
“This video stopped me in my tracks for how desperate a man can be when things don’t go his way.
“It’s time for the truth to be told, for the picture to do the talking.
“Hafthor Bjornsson, you and your yes men should be ashamed of yourselves.”
    ‘RESPECT FOR THIS SPORT’
Game of Throne star Hafthor Bjornsson was quick to reiterate his love and respect for the sweet science after having his hand raised.
He said: “I love competing and I have such a respect for this sport.
“I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and this sport is without a doubt the hardest sport I’ve tried.
    “But I absolutely love it.”

    DEVON LARRATT TALKS
“Thanks to everybody who supported me and believed in me in this process.
“I know that there is an arm-wrestler out there who is a far superior boxer to me.
“Please, take vengeance on Thor for me. Somebody from the arm-wrestling world who actually has some hands.”

    MORE FROM THOR
Hafthor Bjornsson was full of praise for Devon Larratt after their bout, hailing him for taking the fight on a mere five weeks’ notice.
He said: “My thoughts is just wow.
Devon is such a warrior, he has the biggest heart i know. That guy is something else.
“To only take a fight on only five weeks’ notice is brave.”

    THOR CALLS OUT HALL
Hafthor Bjornsson has just sent a message to former friend turned rival Eddie Hall.
In his post-fight interview, he said: “You guys know what I want to fight [next].
“You guys know. Come on, who is it? I know Eddie’s at home chilling on the sofa with his popcorn and cola.
“Enjoy your life, buddy. I’m gonna knock you out soon.”

    IT’S OVER!
Hafthor Bjornsson has defeated short-notice opponent Devon Larratt via first-round TKO.
A scrappy and unpleasing affair on the eye, but The Mountain finally has his first victory.

THOR VS LARRATT – ROUND ONE
Thor comes out aggressive and immediately tries to take the centre of the ring with a series of jabs.
They clinch and briefly fall into the ropes before the ref steps in.
Larratt has landed two good counter hooks early.
The ref is giving a count to Larratt, not sure why, though.
Thor lands a big straight left before Larratt looks to close the distance and avoid the onslaught.
Bjornsson is continuing to find a home for his straight left and Larratt is struggling.
A big left hook lands for Thor and staggers Larratt. And the ref has waved it off!
    HERE COMES THE MOUNTAIN
Hafthor Bjornsson is making his way to the ring.

    LARRATT IS HERE
Devon Larratt is in the ring.

    ALMOST MAIN EVENT TIME
It’s almost time for Hafthor Bjornsson and Devon Larratt to go to war.
Will the former Game of Thrones star finally pick up his first victory?
    We’re about to find out.

    HEPPNER WINS
Jacob Heppner defeats Josh Bridges via unanimous decision.
No complaints with that decision. Now, let’s move on to the main event.

BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND SIX
Both men are giving their all here in the sixth and final stanza.
Despite huffing and puffing earlier, Heppner is the fresher fighter.
Bridges seems resigned to throwing and hoping and has missed wildly with several shots.
    The final bell goes.
BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND FIVE
Just as I praise both men for showing some degree of skill, it drops.
More than likely down to fatigue, but the pace and quality has well and truly dropped.
Heppner, to his credit, is continuing to try and push the pace.
BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND FOUR
Okay, this has actually turned out to be better than I expected.
For six months of training between them, both men are showcasing okayish skills.
Although I won’t be paying to watch these two go at it again anytime soon.
Heppner lands his best shot of the night in the final minute, with a big right hand landing flush on Bridge’s chin.

BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND THREE
Heppner appears to have found a second wind in the third, although he’s still breathing heavy.
Bridges is, however, continuing to have success when he closes the distance.
The former Navy Seal is also repeatedly finding a home for his overhand right.

BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND TWO
Both men come out swinging, albeit recklessly, at the start of the second.
Bridges is by far the cleaner puncher and is landing good shots when he closes the distance.
Heppner is far too tight and rigid and gassing himself out with his stiff and telegraphed punches.
A good overhand right lands for Bridges just before the final minute mark.
    The bell goes.

BRIDGES VS HEPPNER – ROUND ONE
You can clearly tell these guys have never fought competitively, but they’re giving it a real go.
Heppner is trying his best to dictate the pace of the fight and take the centre of the ring.
But Bridges comes forward and lands two nice combinations. Heppner is breathing at the end of the first.
    CROSSFITTERS UP NEXT
Up next is a battle of former CrossFit Games competitors. Yup, you read that correctly, CrossFitters
Former Navy Seal Josh Bridges is about to throw down with Jacob Heppner.
I have no idea how this is going to go or if it’ll even represent a boxing match.
    Only time will tell.

    LIGHT WORK FOR BAKOLE
Take a look at heavyweight prospect Martin Bakole’s destruction of Haruna Osumanu.

    RESULT
Anthony de Bruijn has defeated Georgian journeyman Giorgi Gachechiladze via unanimous decision.
You didn’t need a scorecard to tell the victor of that contest.
In truth, I’m glad it’s over.
    SHOTS FIRED FROM HALL
Hafthor Bjornsson has had his brief boxing career mocked by his old pal Eddie Hall, whom he was meant to fight this evening.
Hall told Men’s Health UK: “I’ve watched both the fights and it was very laughable.
“It’s put a lot more confidence in me watching his fights, because I know what I’m capable of. I know what I can do.
“I’ve put absolutely zero content out there, and I know for a fact that’s going to be getting in his head as well that he doesn’t know what’s coming.
“You know he’s going to have some sleepless nights, whereas I’m going to sleep like a baby, because I know what’s coming and I’m not scared of it.”

    CONFIDENT IN HIS SNOUT
Devon Larratt is adamant Hafthor Bjornsson won’t be able to make good on his vow to break his nose, so much so he’s bet him £364.
He said: “You know Thor, if you break my nose I’ll personally take $500 of my prize money and give it to you. I just don’t think it’s possible.
“And I think a broken nose would suit me well, it would up my popularity in the world.
“I think I’ll look better, more people will love me – you break it Thor, go break my nose, let’s see how it goes.
“But if I break your nose I expect you to give me $5,000 because you wear nicer clothes than me, I can get a suit like that next time we do this.”

    NOSE BREAKER
Hafthor Bjornsson plans to draw blood tonight, vowing to break Devon Larratt’s nose.
Earlier this week, the 32-year-old said: “What can I say to this guy?
“I like him, but I’m going to beat his a***.
“I’m in a rough situation here, what can I do? I’ll probably break his nose, I’m sorry Devon it’s just my job.”

But he soon found himself trying to stay upright after the pair clinched and almost fell through the ropes.
The 47-year-old Larratt wasn’t deterred by the behemoth in front of him and looked to land counter shots, two of which found their home.
But the ref soon gave him a count for what initially looked like a stumble.
That proved to be the signal for Bjornsson to up the ante and fire his left hand, which began to find its home at will.
Larratt, to his credit, tried to close the distance and protect himself but couldn’t keep his 147kg opponent off him.
Enjoy your life, buddy. I’m gonna knock you out soonHafthjor Bjornsson’s message to Eddie Hall
After hearing Larratt wail in pain following a big left hand, the referee wisely decided to stop the contest.
Bjornsson was full of praise for his opponent after the final bell, saying: “My thoughts is just wow.
“Devon is such a warrior, he has the biggest heart I know. That guy is something else.
“To only take a fight on only five weeks’ notice is brave.”
Larratt was quick to thank his supporters and jokingly called for one of his fellow arm-wrestlers to avenge his loss.

He said: “Thanks to everybody who supported me and believed in me in this process.

AJ warns Usyk that intimidation tactics won’t work after Ukrainian searched Wembley crowd to call out heavyweight champ

ANTHONY JOSHUA warned Oleksandr Usyk that his intimidation tactics will mean nothing as he towers over him on Saturday. After the Ukraine southpaw, 34, outpointed Derek Chisora in October, he searched for AJ in the Wembley arena crowd and warned him he is next.
Anthony Joshua is determined to show he is more than just a powerful big man
Oleksandr Usyk has watched AJ in action before and has put on a lot of weight to prepare for the Brit
And he was at Joshua’s 2018 Wembley Stadium win over Alexander Povetkin, staring deeply into the celebrating Brit hero’s eyes like a comic villain.
But the WBA, IBF and WBO king — who at 6ft 6in — is two inches taller and usually around three stone heavier than the former undisputed cruiserweight champ — says all those mind games will count for nothing when they step in the ring.
When asked how that awkward Halloween meeting felt, AJ said: “It was an interesting moment.
“I saw him in the flesh and I saw things, I was telling Del to throw things but it is so different when you are in there in front of your opponent.
“He has been to a lot of my fights and seen certain things but when I am in front of him he will know it is a different ball game.”
Usyk has tried to put on two stones of muscle since his move up to the heavyweight division and it appears to have cost him some of his trademark speed and footwork.

The Watford Adonis looks especially sleek and defined for this fight but is still likely to be a 17st powerhouse, with almost all of the physical attributes in his favour.
But he is tired of hearing about how the contest is just a battle between Usyk’s brilliant brain and his incredible brawn.
Joshua added: “If it was just about that, I wouldn’t be motivated to get out of bed, to train, to put the yards in, to fatigue myself physically, mentally, to recover in the space of six or seven hours and go back and do it again in the morning.
“The positive affirmations, deep practice, practicing on the edge, being vulnerable. All of these kinds of things make a good fighter, it’s not just about being the big man.
“You can see I’ve thrown myself into improving at a deeper level, because if it was just about being big then I’d go in that ring and knock him out in 20 seconds.
“The first punch and every opponent should drop. But, what I realised over the years is that it’s not about that, it’s about angles, timing, setting punches up, concentration, understanding what’s coming back and outclassing an opponent in all those departments.
“If you follow your As, Bs and Cs it leads to your KOs.”
AJ and his team wasted seven months planning and training for the challenge of a 6ft 9in Tyson Fury fight, only for the Gypsy King to be legally forced into a third Deontay Wilder bout.
And refocusing on a 6ft 4in leftie has taken plenty of long hours, hard work and uncomfortable training sessions. But he sounds confident enough to take on the challenge with one hand tied behind his back.
Joshua looks trim and in very good shape for his bout with Usyk
He explained: “It’s not just about training to get fit, it’s about training to get better and finding out who you are.
“I have done sparring where I am only allowed to use my left hand and my southpaw opponent is allowed to do whatever he wants.
“It was really challenging. It was deep practice but I could not use my size or power. Putting yourself in vulnerable situations brings the best out of you.”

Amir Khan removed from flight by cops over complaint about Covid face mask as boxer protests his innocence

BOXER Amir Khan has complained that he was kicked off a flight after a row over a Covid face mask. The former world champion, 34, was travelling from New York to Colorado Springs to start his training camp ahead of his next fight.

He claims that the actions of the airline staff were ‘disgusting’Credit: PA
Khan posted a video to Twitter explaining that he was told that his pal’s face covering was not pulled up high enough before they were both removed from the aircraft by cops.
He said: “I was taken off the plane today when I was going to training camp in Colorado Springs by police.
“A complaint was made by American Airlines staff, they said my colleague’s mask was not high enough and not up, that they had to stop the plane and take me and my friend off when I did nothing wrong.
“They kicked us both off. I was sat at 1A and he was sat in 1B. I find it disgusting and disrespectful.
“I was supposed to go to Colorado Springs for a training camp and now I’m back in New York for another day and I have to reschedule another plane to travel back to training camp.
“It’s really upsetting; there was no reason and I’m so disgusted that American Airlines would do this and ban me from travelling.

“There must be cameras that they can see to see if I or my colleague were bad in any way or caused. a scene in any way.
“I’ve never seen this happen before and I’m heartbroken.”
Khan, who is expected to face British rival Kell Brook in what could be his final fight, has not fought for over two years after beating Billy Dib in Saudi Arabia.
The boxer had considered retiring but looks set to finally settle his rivalry with fellow welterweight Brook who is also nearing the end of his career.
Brook, 35, has fought just twice in the last three years and lost his last bout to undefeated champion Terence Crawford.
Following Brook’s bitter split with promoter Eddie Hearn last year, Khan met with the Matchroom boss on Tuesday in an effort to do business.
An American Airlines spokesman said: “Prior to takeoff, American Airlines Flight 700, with service from Newark Liberty International Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth, returned to the gate to deplane two customers who reportedly refused to comply with repeated crew member requests to stow luggage, place cell phones in airplane mode and adhere to federal face covering requirements.
