Anthony Joshua reveals he found out reason for shock Andy Ruiz Jr loss two weeks after fight

ANTHONY JOSHUA has revealed that he found out why he lost to Andy Ruiz Jr two weeks after their June 2019 bout. The Mexican-American, who was a late replacement for Jarrell Miller, shocked the world at Madison Square Garden as he knocked Joshua out.

AJ was initially at a loss to describe what happened.
But in a new interview with iFL TV, the Brit admitted that he now knows where he went wrong.
He also added that he refused to make excuses at the time – making digs at Deontay Wilder and David Haye in the process.
Joshua, 32, said: “I was looking for a replacement. Realistically, at top level we need another 10 weeks to prepare for this style of fight, but whatever bring him on.
“It was interesting because I found out certain pieces of information two weeks after the fight as to why certain things were going the way they were going.
“It gave me reason, so what people call excuses… I could have been like my baby toe was hurting. Ruiz had machine-gun bullets in his glove.

“Whatever excuse I could have thought of at the time, I could have come up with. I felt like I had reason, I handled it myself. Every day I woke up, I looked at myself in the mirror.”
His comments look to be clear digs at Wilder and Haye.
Wilder, 36, accused Tyson Fury of cheating by tampering with his gloves during their second fight.
While Haye blamed a broken toe for his 2011 loss to Wladimir Klitschko.
Despite making a dig at Wilder, Joshua is more than willing to fight the Bronze Bomber next year after his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
He added: “If the fans can’t see I would take these fights with the fighters like Wilder in a heartbeat,.
“And I want people to know that I would fight anyone in their prime or anytime.
“Give me a mandatory and I will fight anyone, I love the game and will fight anyone.
But would I fight Wilder? Yes I would.Anthony Joshua
“I will take on any challenge providing politics aren’t an issue and the finances are there with these guys, people know what I am about.
“I think Wilder fought (Tyson) Fury thinking it was going to be easier than his previous fights and got caught in a trilogy web.
“But would I fight Wilder? Yes I would.
Joshua has recently been training in America, working with the likes of Ronnie Shields across the pond.
But he insisted that he has not ditched long-term coach Rob McCracken – and that he merely wanted to get out of his ‘comfort zone’.

Ricky Hatton tells Tyson Fury to RETIRE and ‘forget’ the Anthony Joshua fight as he’s got ‘nothing left to prove’

RICKY HATTON wants Tyson Fury to retire and forget about fighting Anthony Joshua.’Hitman’ Hatton reckons the Gypsy King has nothing to prove to anyone and has ‘done his job’.

Fury’s hopes of meeting AJ were dashed when Joshua lost to Oleksandr Usyk
Fury knocked out Deontay Wilder in the 11th round of their recent trilogy match.
But he had his hopes of a mammoth Battle of Britain clash with Anthony Joshua dashed when AJ lost to Oleksandr Usyk.
But Hatton reckons Fury, 33, needs to forget about that now and start thinking about calling it a day.
He told the Mail: “Tyson’s proved himself. He’s had that trilogy with Wilder, he beat [Wladamir] Klitschko.
“Tyson’s not like AJ; he’s suffered from depression, drinks and drugs and all he now wants is the defining fights and to get out the game.
“Let’s have it right, if Tyson wants to retire he’s got nothing more to prove.

“The only thing that Tyson wants to know in his own mind, just like AJ does, is who the best out of he and AJ is.
“But Tyson can’t wait another two years while he fights him and he fights him, he’ll want to be in and out now.
“He deserves it as well. I’m sure his wife Paris doesn’t want to see him stood there getting knocked on his a*** every five minutes.
“Tyson’s done his job now as far as I’m concerned.
“It’s a shame if the AJ fight doesn’t happen, and if it does it has to happen quickly, because Tyson’s ready for hanging up his gloves now.
“As his friend, I want him to hang them up – he’s got nothing left to prove.”
Usyk’s unanimous points decision put the mouthwatering prospect of Fury vs AJ on hold AGAIN.
    ‘FORGET THE AJ FIGHT’
The Gypsy King’s promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum have told Joshua to stand aside to allow Fury to fight Usyk to become undisputed.
But Eddie Hearn quickly laughed that off and said AJ and Usyk will meet again early next year.
And Hatton thinks Fury should banish thoughts of the AJ fight from his mind.
He added: “He’s got to forget the AJ fight, it might not happen.
“He’s got to get the undisputed, get all the belts and retire very proud of where he’s come from.
“He was at the bottom of the ladder a few years ago, and to be an undefeated undisputed champion, he can hold his head up high for me.”
Fury has battled with personal demons in his time and his comeback from the depths of despair to become world champion makes the Gypsy King one of the top five heavyweights of all time, according to Hatton.
He added: “Everyone has a different view [on their top heavyweights throughout history].
“Muhammad Ali will forever be the greatest – in everyone’s mind – for reasons other than boxing.
“Some would mention Lennox Lewis, while others would say Tyson might have been a bit too tricky.
“Would it be unfair of me to say he’s got to be around the top five? I would definitely say that.”

John Fury did not speak to son Tyson for weeks before first Wilder fight as dad felt he was making ‘catastrophic error’

JOHN FURY refused to speak to his son Tyson after he took the first fight with then WBC and Ring magazine champion Deontay Wilder.Fury turned in two lacklustre comeback fights against Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta before fighting Wilder in 2018.

And dad John was worried for his son as he was nowhere near his best, heading into a fight with one of the most ferocious punchers in heavyweight history.
Tyson was leading on points before he was dropped twice late on in a brilliant fight, coming away with a draw.
Wife Paris detailed the father-son tension in her new book ‘Love and Fury: The Magic and Mayhem of Life with Tyson’.
She wrote: “John made his feelings quite clear.
“He thought his son and his entourage were making a catastrophic mistake in fighting Wilder so soon.
“In fact, he was so angry and upset he refused to speak to Tyson for weeks, only breaking his silence to wish him good luck in a phone call from Manchester.

“While this sad situation had come as a blow to Tyson – he worshipped his dad, and had always valued his advice – it didn’t dent his confidence.”
Paris shared some of her father-in-law’s concerns.
On her own feelings on the fight, she said: “As the fight night loomed closer my anxiety levels skyrocketed.
“More so than any other fight that had gone before it.
“While I had every faith in my husband’s confidence and ability – I only needed to cast my mind back to what he’d achieved in the [Wladimir] Klitschko fight – I couldn’t rid myself of a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
“I was so worried this head-to-head was too much, too soon and that, by stepping into the ring to fight Wilder, Tyson was putting his health at serious risk.
“Just one mega-punch could easily knock him unconscious, cause him brain damage or, God help us, endanger his life.”
Fury’s next opponent looks likely to be Whyte
Before the rematch, Tyson got two more fights under his belt against Tom Schwarz and Otto Wallin.
And in the 2020 rematch, Tyson convincingly beat Wilder to pick up the WBC and ring magazine titles.
The Gypsy King also won the trilogy fight in early October, knocking Wilder out in the 11th round to put the rivalry with the American to bed.
Over the three fights, Fury was knocked down four times but remains unbeaten in his professional career.
His next opponent looks to be Dillian Whyte in an all-English clash.
A unification bout against Oleksandr Usyk could take place, if Tyson beats Whyte and the Ukrainian sees off Anthony Joshua in the rematch scheduled for some time next year.

Anthony Joshua takes veiled swipe at David Haye and says he would NEVER make excuses like injured baby toe

After the fight, the Brit stood on the press conference table to show off his injured toe, which he claimed affected his performance.
But many laughed it off as a poor excuses for fluffing his lines in his big chance in Hamburg, Germany.
Now, speaking to iFL TV about the time he sensationally lost to huge outsider Andy Ruiz Jr to suffer his first pro defeat, Joshua explained how he refused to look for excuses.
Ruiz Jr stepped in for Jarrell Miller, who failed a drugs test, and went on to shock the world by KO’ing AJ in the seventh round.
He said: “I was looking for a replacement.

As well as Haye blaming his little toe, Deontay Wilder accused Tyson Fury of having ‘loaded gloves’ after the American was battered around the ring in their second bout.
AJ went on to win back his WBA, WBO and IBF titles by easily outpointing Ruiz Jr in their rematch.
Is AJ going to beat Fury in a boxing match? I don’t believe soDavid HayeFormer two-weight world champ
But in September he lost them all over again to Oleksandr Usyk.
He has promised their rematch will be ‘a war’ and has been asking Mike Tyson’s old coach Ronnie Shields to turn him into DOG for the shot at redemption.
Meanwhile former two-weight world champ Haye has predicted that Fury would be too powerful and resilient for Joshua if they ever fought.
He told BT Sport: “I think from the strength of that performance, it would be very tough for AJ.
“Having watched AJ’s last performance against Usyk, the shots that Fury took down the pipe from Wilder, he was able to get back up and rough him up.
“The fact that AJ stood at range with Usyk having a boxing match… is AJ going to beat Fury in a boxing match? I don’t believe so.”

Brit Fury, 33, retained his WBC and Ring magazine titles after knocking bitter rival Wilder out in the 11th round.
The Gypsy King’s win potentially sets up a unification fight with Usyk should the Ukrainian see off Anthony Joshua’s rematch challenge for his four world titles.
And although a fight with Fury seems ‘interesting’, Usyk was left unimpressed with the pair as they ‘wanted to kill each other.’
Usyk told the Daily Mail: “I did watch the fight but I didn’t think much (of) it. They just wanted to kill each other.”
Legendary boxer Mike Tyson agrees with Uysk’s assessment on the fight not being great from a skill point of view.
But Tyson insists the fight will go down as ‘one of the greatest’ in boxing history.

After the fight, Tyson tweeted: “Fury vs Wilder fight will go down as one of greatest.
“Not for skill, but for action and excitement.
“That fight was all guts, heart & determination.
    “Everybody won Saturday night.
“The fight was bigger than the hype. Both of them reached all time great status…”
Usyk sees the potential fight with Fury as a ‘huge one’, and will do his job in the gym to prove the doubters who think he can’t beat the Brit wrong.
He told SunSport: “Yes, of course, I do regard this fight a huge one. I see him as a very good fighter, good athlete, he talks a lot, he has a tongue.
“He claims he’s the king of the kings, but it’s only he who thinks that. That’s what I can say about him.”
He continued: “Before my Joshua fight everyone was saying that I haven’t got a single chance to win and beat Joshua.

“I used to hear those types of things throughout my life, but I am capable of beating Fury because I’m not boasting that I can just punish and beat every boxer in the world, but I just go to the gym and do my job.
“I train hard, I work hard, I put all my effort in. I’m not trying to present myself as the king of the Universe.
“I do what I have to do. I concentrate and I’m focused and I get the result according to my effort.”

Best pound-for-pound boxers revealed with Tyson Fury jumping up the list as Usyk leapfrogs Joshua

CANELO ALVAREZ will aim to become undisputed super-middleweight world champ when he fights Caleb Plant on November 6.And if he manages to beat the American, you won’t find many arguing against him being the pound-for-pound best.
Canelo Alvarez is a four-weight world champCredit: Reuters
The Mexican is already four-weight world champ – you wouldn’t be surprised if he fancies a crack at cruiser or even heavy in the future.
However, a host of other stars claim to be the king of the ring, especially after the dramatic events in the heavyweight division over the past month.
Here SunSport gives its pound-for-pound top ten boxers – and it was NOT an easy task.
    10 Artur Beterbiev
Russian powerhouse Beterbiev cemented his place as the man at 175lbs after stopping Oleksandr Gvozdyk to add the WBC title to his IBF belt and then defending those against Adam Deines.
The now unified light-heavyweight puncher stayed resilient in the Eastern European affair and kept his 100 per cent KO rate intact.
A unification clash against WBA ruler Dmitry Bivol has now been mentioned in what would be another clash of two heavy hitters.
But a potential meeting with Kovalev or even Canelo would do more to enhance Beterbiev’s already scary profile.
However, it is Marcus Browne up next for him in the ring next month.

    9 Anthony Joshua
Joshua makes it into this list for his boxing skillset learned from his amateur days and also his bouncebackability.
The sport was stunned when Joshua was flattened by the unfancied late stand-in Andy Ruiz Jr – but went back to the drawing board, came back, and scored an easy rematch victory.
However, he is now on the comeback trail again after he lost his belts and was completely outclassed by Usyk last month.
Critics will argue that AJ could well be the complete heavyweight, but not pound-for-pound for his transferrable skills.
But he has never shirked a challenge and the list of his conquests is very impressive – and will get even greater if he is successful in his rematch with Usyk.
    8 Vasiliy Lomachenko
Leaving the amateur game with a record of 396-1 – with the one loss to Albert Selimov later avenged – the simple question was could the boxing maestro transcend his skill-set to 12 rounds.
An early loss to Orlando Salido – for the WBO featherweight title in Lomachenko’s second pro fight – was a clear reminder that the unpaid ranks are a completely different game.
But after being roughed up and out-muscled by a veteran and overweight Salido, Loma became the quickest three-weight world champion in history.
A contentious points defeat by Lopez saw the proud Ukrainian take a hit and he is desperate for the rematch.
But he bounced back brilliant, completely outclassing Masayoshi Nakatani before KO’ing the Japanese fighter in the ninth.
Will be in action again next month when he battles Richard Commey at Madison Square Garden.

    7 Teofimo Lopez
Lopez became lightweight world champ in only his 15th bout – three fights before Mayweather – as he knocked out Richard Commey for the IBF belt in December 2019.
The 24 year old was still rightfully an outsider against masterful southpaw Lomachenko in October 2020, where all the titles were at stake.
But Lopez silenced the doubters and became an overnight sensation, knocking the P4P No1 off his perch.
It also made him only the fifth man – behind Bernard Hopkins, Jermain Taylor, Terence Crawford and Oleksandr Usyk – to hold all four undisputed titles.
Teofimo Lopez stunned Vasiliy Lomachenko to be crowned unified lightweight champCredit: Getty
    6 Naoya Inoue
The Americans now know all about Inoue.
He has secured two KO victories in his last two fights in Las Vegas – demonstrating his phenomenal power at bantamweight.
Having began his career at 108 lbs the Japanese banger went on to claim titles at super-flyweight, junior-bantamweight champion and bantamweight.
The heavy-handed 28-year-old has flown under the radar having campaigned at the lighter weights.
But beating fighting legend Nonito Donaire in the World Boxing Super Series final had everyone sitting up and taking notice.
Naoya Inoue has ferocious power and often leaves his opponents crumpled in painCredit: Getty
    5 Tyson Fury
The Gypsy King completed the most memorable of journeys back to the top when he battered Deontay Wilder to be crowned WBC heavyweight champ.
And he backed that up a fortnight ago as he emerged triumphant after a thrilling trilogy fight with the Bronze Bomber.
Even at his heaviest back in the boxing ring, Fury moves like the wind and is several steps ahead of his opponent before a punch is even thrown.
Fury is still undefeated as a pro – 31 wins and one draw, with 22 KOs.
Tyson Fury emerged triumphant in his brilliant trilogy fight with Deontay WilderCredit: Getty
    4 Oleksandr Usyk
Usyk reigned as undisputed cruiserweight king having won the WBSS – which involved all the divisions belts – and has now well-and-truly stamped his authority at heavyweight.
His nimble footwork, consistent punching rate and heavy hands made him no match for anyone at 200lbs – with his previous most high-profile win coming against Tony Bellew in Manchester.
The Ukrainian maestro hasn’t had it all his own way at heavyweight – notably Derek Chisora caused him all sorts of problems.
But he overcame the odds to completely outclass Anthony Joshua at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month to snatch the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles.
And that was enough to propel him way above his Brit rival and Tyson Fury in our P4P rankings.

    3 Terence Crawford
Crawford is as classy in the ring as he is outside it.
Possibly the best switch-hitter in the game right now, he has the ability to overwhelm any foe with his combination punching.
The American has great balance allowing him to work as a counter-puncher – as Julius Indongo knows – though he is equally as deadly as an aggressive box-puncher, which often comes out in the later rounds.
Crawford has won world titles at lightweight, super-lightweight and currently reigns as WBO welterweight king – having held undisputed gold at 140lbs.
Fans are now anxiously awaiting his showdown with Shawn Porter.

    2 Josh Taylor
Incredibly, Taylor still doesn’t seem to get the respect he deserves.
Along his path to becoming UNDISPUTED super-lightweight champion, the 30-year-old Scott has battered some real warriors.
Taylor is now the face of Sky Sports’ new boxing era without Eddie Hearn – and it’s about time.
He is next in action on December 18 when he defends titles against Jack Catterall.

SunSport’s latest P4P rankingsCredit: The Sun
    1 Canelo Alvarez
Mexican hero Alvarez has quickly taken over as boxing’s biggest star since former foe Floyd Mayweather walked away from the sport.
With only a sole loss – to Mayweather in 2013 aged 23 – Canelo has gone on to rule the super-welterweight and middleweight divisions as well as winning a world title at super-middleweight.
Last time out he crushed Billy Joe Saunders’ dreams, as well as his eye socket, with a stoppage win.
Next up is the unification blockbuster against Caleb Plant – but the Mexican looks unbeatable right now.

Tyson’s demolition of the Polish pounder, however, was overturned to a no-contest when he tested positive for marijuana.
But the former undisputed heavyweight champion has no regrets, telling Yahoo: “I broke his cheekbone, his eye socket, his rib — I should have been doing this from the beginning.
“And I said, ‘Wow.’ I got fined for that, of course, but it was worth every bit of it.
“I think of it as an enhancer. It makes me better, even in the ring.
“The punches don’t hurt as much, it has a lot to do with my comeback, the psychedelics.”

“I was fighting with everybody. If someone asked me for an autograph, I’d punch them in the face.
“I was just a mess, and then after I retired, I started smoking.
“What a mistake that was — I should have smoked my whole career. I should have smoked when I was fighting because it put me in this different state of mind.
“I’m very relaxed and the more relaxed you are, the better fighter you are at least in my case.”
Fan favourite Tyson made a sensational return to the ring last November for an exhibition bout with fellow great Roy Jones Jr.
