Canelo Alvarez could move up to join Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in HEAVYWEIGHT division, claims Eddie Hearn

POUND-FOR-POUND superstar Canelo Alvarez could move up to HEAVYWEIGHT in the future, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has claimed. The 31-year-old Mexican recently stopped IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant to become the undisputed king at 168lbs.

Fury is widely recognised as the best heavyweight in the worldCredit: Getty
Canelo has also won titles at light-middleweight, middleweight and light-heavyweight.
And on Thursday the possibility of him jumping up to cruiserweight shocked the sport as the WBC ordered a fight between Alvarez and champion Ilunga Makabu.
The 34-year-old Congolese boxer has lost just twice in 30 fights, the most high-profile of which came when he was knocked out by Tony Bellew in 2016.
If that clash was to take place, it would see Canelo jump from 168lbs up to 200lbs.
But Hearn, who has promoted the Mexican’s fights in the past, believes he could even go one further by going all the way up to HEAVYWEIGHT.
Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “I think with Canelo and Eddie Reynoso, they want challenges. They want to dare to be great which is tremendous for the sport.

“The Makabu fight is a cruiserweight fight that would give him another world championship victory, would get a lot of people talking as it did last night, and I think it’s a good option for him.
“I think it’s a dangerous fight. I was speaking to Tony Bellew – who could be looking real good in a few months if this happens – and he said that Makabu is a huge puncher, huge puncher, and very strong.
“I think that when you look at Saul the Golovkin fight is a huge fight financially, a lot of people would want to see that fight. But does that motivate him?
“I think he could become undisputed at 175 and I like that plan. But there is also the cruiserweight division.
“Listen, he could move up and fight at heavyweight. I mean, Usyk’s not a massive heavyweight, Trevor Bryant’s a world champion as well. Can he compete against those guys?
“Cruiserweight first, maybe. But I like the fight against Makabu. I think it’s a dangerous fight, I think it’s an exciting fight and as I said, Saul and Eddie are interested in making history.
“They’re not interested in having normal, boring fights. Every fight has to mean something.”
    MANY OPTIONS
Hearn did not specifically mention Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua as potential opponents for Canelo, but they are two of the biggest names in the heavyweight division.
Fury currently holds the WBC belt, while Joshua rematches Oleksandr Usyk next year as he bids to reclaim the IBF, WBA and WBO straps.
American Bryant is also in the picture as the WBA regular title holder.
Canelo remains the biggest draw in boxing so many fighters are in the queue to face him as he is the most lucrative financial attraction the sport has to offer.
As well as Makabu at cruiserweight and moving up to heavyweight, Canelo could also opt to have a trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin.
The Kazakh fighter drew with Alvarez in September 2017 before Canelo edged a majority decision 12 months later.
There is also the possibility that Canelo, whose only defeat came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather eight years ago, could face feared light-heavyweight Artur Beterbiev. More

Floyd Mayweather owns NINE skyscrapers including ‘tallest commercial building in USA’ as star looks to make extra $1BN

FLOYD MAYWEATHER revealed he owns NINE skyscrapers including ‘the tallest commercial building in the US’ as he looks to build his wealth. The boxing legend, who officially retired 50-0 in 2017, has claimed to have made $1billion throughout his prizefighting career.

And in an interview with the WBC, when he attended their annual convention in Mexico, Mayweather admitted he does not miss competing.
And instead, he is focussing his efforts on adding to his property portfolio.
Mayweather, 44, said: “I’m OK. Floyd Mayweather made a lot of smart investments.
“One of the buildings I own is the tallest commercial building in America. So if you get a chance go to New York and check it out.
“This is my ninth sky scraper.”
The building Mayweather is referencing is the One Vanderbilt, a 93-story skyscraper in the Midtown Manhattan neighbourhood of New York City.

Mayweather has stakes in the building, which opened in 2020 after three years of construction.
After beating UFC star Conor McGregor, 33, the American icon hung up the gloves, but not for good.
He has since returned for two exhibition bouts, the first against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, 23, which he won in a round.
But this June, Mayweather faced YouTuber Logan Paul, 26, in an extraordinary spectacle bout, giving away TWO STONE in size.
Paul managed to take it the full eight round distance, technically avoiding defeat.
But Mayweather boasted before and after about walking away from the 24-minute ring cameo $100m (£74m) richer.
Despite having no desire to continue professional boxing, the unbeaten great will never lose the passion for making money.

His right hand man Leonord Ellerbe told Insider last year that Mayweather’s ‘goal’ was to match the $1bn (£743m) he made in the ring, outside the ring.
As revealed by SunSport, the retired boxer’s businesses include a strip club, fashion line, real estate and music label.
He also has homes in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, including a £19m mansion in Beverly Hills.
Mayweather’s lifestyle also includes car collections of over £20m, a private plane and several watches, with one costing £16m alone.

Amir Khan and Kell Brook are ‘yesterday’s men’ – no-one wants to see the fight that should have happened six years ago

IF THERE’S ever a vaccine to protect us suffering from delusions of grandeur, Kell Brook and Amir Khan should be first in the queue to receive a double dose. The prospect of these two beaten-up ex-world champions fighting each other has once again reared its ugly head.

Khan backed up his rival’s comments and said contracts are nearly finalisedCredit: Action Images
Last week Brook and Khan were suggesting boxing fans were clamouring to see them settle their bitter long-standing verbal rivalry in the ring.
Brook said: “I need a big massive fight to get my teeth into and the fight we all want to see is with the guy from Bolton.”
Then he had the audacity to add: “Everybody knows this fight needs to happen — it’s the biggest fight in British boxing.”
I don’t know where Kell’s been hiding but he doesn’t seem to have heard of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua or Dillian Whyte.
Khan, backing him up, intimated an announcement is imminent when he told talkSPORT: “Contracts are still going back and forth so hopefully something gets finalised this week.”
Six years ago, when they were both extremely popular attractions there’s no doubt if they had exchanged punches then — instead of words — they would have filled a football ground with excited punters.

Since then, unfortunately, their careers have turned sour having suffered major defeats that have tarnished their reputations and box-office appeal.
Khan hasn’t fought for more than two years and has been more concerned flaunting his considerable wealth in an abysmal BBC TV series and living it up in Dubai.
It was nine years ago when he lost his WBA world light-welterweight title after Danny Garcia knocked him out.
And his last attempt to become a world champion ended disastrously when Terence Crawford easily held on to his WBO welterweight title in 2019 with Khan accused of ‘quitting’ in the sixth round.
Brook had his last fight a year ago. That was also against Crawford — but the American took just ten minutes to leave him a stumbling wreck.
If Kell and Amir weren’t multi-millionaires it would be understandable why they are trying to drum up interest to sell a grudge fight with a load of “Blah…Blah… Blah” to coin a phrase.
They probably believe they represent the British version of the Floyd Mayweather Jr-Manny Pacquiao confrontation.
Unfortunately they don’t seem to realise they are yesterday’s men.
There is nothing worse than watching former superstars going through the motions, fighting from memory.
Sadly we have seen it so many times before — Ricky Hatton and Barry McGuigan are two classic examples.
I certainly don’t want to see Brook and Khan going through the motions trying to relive past glories, apart from the morbidly curious it’s doubtful if many do.
They do say it’s better late than never. But never late is better.
There are many occasions when fighters should be saved from themselves and this is one where it definitely should be put into practice.
Perhaps if it’s made clear to Brook and Khan they haven’t anywhere near the financial muscle they used to have in their salad days they will go away and forget all about it, as Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank did when recently pressing to have a third battle.

Jake Paul vows to ’embarrass’ Tommy Fury’s entire family including Tyson as he shows off gruelling neck exercise

JAKE PAUL hopes to be a pain in the neck to Tommy Fury’s family as he vowed to ’embarrass’ them while showing off his gruelling training. The fighting rivals will settle the score in Florida on December 18 with bragging rights and reputation on the line.

Fury is in training camp alongside brother Tyson, with the WBC heavyweight champion coaching and cornering the 2019 Love Island star.
Meanwhile, Paul has set up shop in Puerto Rico for the second fight in a row and posted a neck strengthening video.
And he captioned the post: “1 month to go until December 18th and a complete embarrassment of the Fury family.
“Mark your calendars now to witness history in Tampa.”
Boxing greats of the past and present including Floyd Mayweather, 44, Anthony Joshua, 32, and Tommy’s brother Tyson, 33, all used similar methods.
The technique is used to increase punch resistance and decreases the whiplash effect of sustaining a punch.

Fury, 22, recently hit out at Paul himself, after the YouTuber’s girlfriend uploaded a picture of them playing a dance pad game.
He posted: “Whilst Jake enjoys afternoons in the arcade playing dance mat with his side ting….. I thought I’d take 5 minutes out from the best camp of my life to say NOTHING can save you now.
“DECEMBER 18th, you’ll see that you can’t come in my world and not get hurt.”
In Paul’s first three fights, Paul beat YouTuber ‘AnEsonGib’, ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, 37, and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, also 37.
But in August, he improved to 4-0 with a win over eight rounds against ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley, 39.
On the undercard, Fury beat Paul’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor, 32, to move to 7-0 and set up the mega-fight.

But now it has been confirmed she will no longer be fighting on the bill and will instead appear on a future show.
Dubois qualified for the Olympic Games in the summer but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee.
She subsequently made the decision to turn over but will now have to wait for her first pro bout.
World title challenger Natasha Jonas will replace Dubois on the card, which is headlined by Richard Riakporhe’s cruiserweight fight against Olanrewaju Durodola.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Jonas said: “I want to be challenging for world titles next year and next weekend’s fight is the first step on that journey.
“I’m really happy to be signed to BOXXER and Sky Sports and make my first appearance so quickly.

US star Jaron Ennis wants to make history and become FOUR-TIME undisputed champ from welterweight to super-middleweight

RISING American talent Jaron Ennis wants to make boxing history and become a FOUR-TIME undisputed champion. The welterweight contender has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the sport, unbeaten in 29 fights with 26 knockouts.

Already he has won praise from the likes of Floyd Mayweather, 44, and drew comparisons to Roy Jones Jr, 55.
But Ennis has his eye on surpassing even their iconic legacies and reigning from welterweight to super-middleweight, with all the belts to his name.
He told SunSport: “I want to go down in history as one of the all-time greats.
“I want to be the first in history to win undisputed belts at 47, 54, 60 and 68, four-time undisputed world champion.
“Its never been done before and I want to be the first person to do that.
“I want everybody to love my style, the fans and people to continue watching me.”

Boxing has only ever had six men reign as a four-belt undisputed champion, with lightweight Teofimo Lopez, 24, ruled out after winning the WBC ‘Franchise’ belt.
But none achieved the feat in more than one division, let alone four, although women’s boxer Claressa Shields, 26, was undisputed at middleweight and light-middle.
Ennis, yet to fight for a world title, has a dazzling, switch-hitting style and carries power in each hand from both stances.
And he is even forced to spar light-heavyweights, who naturally fight TWO STONE more than him.
Ennis revealed: “I spar a lot bigger guys, like 68 or 75. It’s names I can’t say, but I spar with a lot of guys.
“When I’m in camp, I spar bigger guys because I’m too strong for the guys in my weight, so I bring in guys that are 54, 60, 68, some are 75.
“I need that extra weight. But I do great, it’s better for me to spar bigger guys. Sometimes I add in a smaller guy, just for speed.
“But I don’t throw much power or nothing like that.”
I want to be the first in history to win undisputed belts at 47, 54, 60 and 68, four-time undisputed world champion. Jaron Ennis
Ennis, who most recently knocked out Thomas Dulorme, 31, in round one, is ranked in the top six with each governing body and as high as three with the IBF.
He is is in the fortunate position of having not one but two elite fighters in his weight division who are considered to be in the top ten in the world.
But he is waiting for Terence Crawford, 34 and Errol Spence Jr, 31, to finally settle who is the welterweight No1, before swooping in.
Ennis said: “It’s a great thing to have two pound-for-pound guys in the same weight as me.
“Hopefully they fight each other, then I can come in there and fight one of those guys, or both.”
Challenging WBO champion Crawford, who fights Shawn Porter, 34, on November 20 in Las Vegas , or WBC and IBF holder Spence is well within Ennis’ sights.
And if he had it his way, it would be sooner than most predict.
Ennis admitted: “Honestly, I feel like it could happen next. But, realistically probably one more fight, one or two more fights.”

‘We can make it happen’ – Canelo Alvarez’s coach wants Gennady Golovkin trilogy fight in Mexico to ‘close that chapter’

CANELO ALVAREZ’S coach wants the Mexican star to face Gennady Golovkin and settle their trilogy in a homecoming. Alvarez was fortunate to walk away with a draw in their initial 2017 fight and won the rematch a year later, again in contentious fashion.

Canelo has since moved up in weight, becoming a four-division champion with belts from light-middleweight all the way up to light-heavyweight.
Meanwhile, Golovkin has remained at 160lb and unifies his IBF title against Ryota Murata’s WBA version on December 29.
Canelo has previously warned his great rival they can only do battle once more if it is at super-middleweight, where he reigns as undisputed king.
And trainer Reynoso wants the bitter trilogy fight back home in Mexico, where they have not fought since 2011.
He said, via Fight News: “We would like to face Golovkin for a third time to close that chapter. I think we can make it happen.
“I would like for Golovkin to come to Mexico. We can make that fight happen in Guadalajara or Mexico City.

“We hope to make it happen. He hasn’t mentioned Canelo’s name, he has a fight in December against Murata in Japan.
“We’ll see what happens in that fight and perhaps we can make Canelo vs GGG 3 happen.”
Golovkin, 39, has never fought outside of middleweight, the division Canelo, 31, left in 2019.
After Alvarez moved up in weight, he even won the WBO light-heavyweight title in 2019 against Sergey Kovalev, 39.
But Canelo has since settled back down at super-middleweight and won all four belts within 11 months.
He knocked out Caleb Plant, 29, in November following wins over Callum Smith, 31, Avni Yildirim, 30 and Billy Joe Saunders, 31.
I would like for Golovkin to come to Mexico. We can make that fight happen in Guadalajara or Mexico City.Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso
Amazingly, Canelo is now braced to step up to CRUISERWEIGHT after the WBC accepted his request to challenge champ Ilunga Makabu, 34.
Moving as high as cruiserweight means fighting at 14st 4lb , which is over TWO STONE more than Canelo’s usual weight.
Reynoso told ESPN Deportes: “What he has done with the heavyweights he spars with, and that is why we asked for the fight.
“We know that [Makabu] is strong, but Canelo can beat him.
“Many may say that it is crazy, but they also said that it was crazy when Canelo was junior middleweight champion and we were looking for middleweights, super middleweight, light heavyweights.
“I have a lot of confidence in Canelo. He is very strong and has many qualities, and I know that he is going to win that fight.”
